Shmee chuckled a little. Well, that reply was... optimistic. Being alive was being better than dead, right? Honestly, though, if Shmee were in that girl's position, she'd probably be whining, so she had to applaud the girl for being such a trooper. Nodding at her words, she pulled up a chair, and promptly sat in it, settling Shei onto her lap. The girl, not the least perturbed by the sudden change of scenery, snuggled up to Shmee as she sucked on her sweetball. Arlo, his work done, stopped his humming, but let Shei continue to hold onto his tail. He knew that it was a bad idea to try taking his tail away while she was in such an unpredictable mood. Knowing Shei, she would probably start crying again if he dared challenge her. Fortunately, he was content to remain as he was. He quickly gave Shmee a loving nuzzle, but Shmee said nothing as she looked curiously over at Pasine. Shard it, she couldn't remember the girl's name!
Fortunately, the girl's question thoroughly distracted Shmee. She frowned. So quickly after the Hatching? It had been a whole threeday since the Hatching had taken place... Pasine must've not have woken up until recently. She raised her eyebrows. "It's been three days since the Hatching took place," she said quietly. She hoped the girl wouldn't be too disappointed when she realized she had been left Standing-- or lying on the Sands, as it were. Injury had been added to the insult of not Impressing, but she knew there would be hope. How many times had this girl stood? Well, she didn't know, honestly-- maybe she had even stood for Hatchings her whole life!-- but she had the rest of her life ahead of her. And there were Hatchings about every two turns, so there was always hope. "Was this the first time you woke up?" she asked, trying to distract the girl from those thoughts, if they had crossed her mind at all. "How are you feeling from it?" She hoped it wasn't too bad. Losing consciousness for days didn't sound like fun at all.
Alarmed, Shmee chanced a glance back at the boy. She grimaced. So, that was where the smell came from. "I don't think they'll kick you out due to smell," she told him drolly, bouncing Shei absently. "Infirmaries are full of stench and sickness all the time. If they kicked out someone who smell bad, this place would be one empty infirmary." And Shmee knew that, from experience. She had worked in the infirmary for over a sevenday, caring for S'rei when he had collapsed. She was aware of the many... exotic smells that came from this place.
"What's your name again?" she asked Pasine lightly, figuring she had nothing to be ashamed of. The Weyr was a big place, and she couldn't possibly remember everyone, after all.

Looks good! The only thing I'd ask is, did he have any opinions of dragons before and after the Selenitas Line changed? The Weyr wasn't exactly a nice place before then, and now it's becoming better. Does Lanthos have anything to think on that subject?

"Thank you," Shmee told the healer kindly, bouncing Shei on her hip. The little babe just had a quick check-up, and Shei clearly didn't like it at all, for she was wailing up a storm. "Shei, lovey, can you smile for Mommy?" Shmee cooed to the babe desperately. She wanted to stop by the mauled candidate on her way out, to see how she was faring, but if Shei was bawling like this, she doubted she would be able to. Arlo, wanting to help his bonded, also nuzzled the babe. Still, this didn't satisfy the young red-head, who simply continued with her crying. "Shhh," she murmured, bouncing the girl. "Hey, do you have a sweetball or something I can give Shei?" she asked the healer quickly. The healer nodded, and quickly fished out a large sweetball from a stash kept in the drawers for weyrbrats like Shei. Holding it out to Shei like an olive branch, the toddler quickly took it, sucking it greedily. At least it stopped the crying.
Mumbling a quick thanks to the healer, Shmee left her part of the infirmary to head back toward the area where Pasine was. She hoped she was all right after the Hatching... She had done whatever was needed of her that the healers needed. Even though she didn't know the girl that well, she felt responsible for her, since it had been at Aslath's Hatching that it happened. Walking toward the cot where the girl lay, she looked briefly from her to the boy, who had a towel on his head. She blinked, taken aback for a moment. This was the boy who wouldn't back off down on the Hatching Sands. She resisted the urge to smile. It looked like this girl had a boy chasing after her. That was an amusing thought.
"Hello," the woman said quietly, coming to stand at the end of the cot. "How are you feeling?" she asked, a concerned expression crossing over her face. Unable to help herself, her eyes flickered to where Pasine's stomach was, as if she could see through the furs that blocked her view. Shells, she felt terrible for that... "You mind if I join you?" she asked, remembering that it was considered rude to just barge in on someone in the infirmary.
Shei tilted her head curiously, the tear stains on her plump cheeks drying now as she sucked at the sweetball. New people weren't her favorite things, but maybe she would get more things to suck on if she were good. Nervously, Shei reached for Arlo's tail, grabbing a hold of it for comfort. Tenderly, he nuzzled her and let out a quiet hum. It was rare for him to make noise, so even Shmee was taken aback. However, it comforted the babe, who rested her fiery head on her mother's shoulder.

Shmee watched in alarm as the idiot boy that was being so possessive of Pasine got attacked by the bronze. She winced, and instinctively clutched Shei close to her. She didn't like her babe on these Sands with all these violent babies, but being over-protective, she couldn't see any better solution of where to put her. Shei stared at the bronze with an awed expression in her blue eyes, oblivious to the danger. When the boy seemed to have recovered from his momentary... struggle? with the bronze, she shook her head firmly. "No," she said harshly. "You're already bound to these dragons, and you're not free to leave your commitments until you know that you're not the one that want. Hypothetically, if there is a dragon that wants you, it will destroy anything in its path to get to you. So stand in the sharding circle, candidate. If you don't Impress, do whatever you want," she spat, glaring at him. However, she automatically reached a hand back down to gently brush the side of Pasine's face.
As soon as Dorava's words turned to her, however, Shmee looked up with a look of fury crossing her delicate features. "Greenrider, calm yourself down," she hissed. "I more than anyone else understand danger. There's nowhere else for Shei to go. Do not tell me what to do," she told her, anger lacing her tone. Honestly, the woman clearly sounded panicked. How on Pern was Pasine to be calm if the people who were healing her going mental from it? Sure, Shmee was upset for the girl, but she wasn't trying to control everyone out of worry! "And a board from where? The nearest ones we have are by the river. And what good will it do? Those are for back and neck injuries! I might not be sure, but this blood seems to look like it's coming from her stomach," she added drolly. My my, what had possessed her, to make such jokes at such a time?
Still just as sarcastically, Shmee continued, "A stretcher now, we have one of those tucked away in the supply closet in the Hatching Ground-- you never know when a bad accident will happen. But I can't carry it with Shei."
Fortunately, Meira's arrival seemed to cool the woman's temper. She nodded firmly, quickly noticing the flitter at the girl's neck. Oh, dear. Aslath would realize it now that Shmee had registered it mentally... Sure enough, the golden queen screeched in anger, making a few people jump where they were seated, or, if they were candidates, where they were standing. GET AWAY FROM MY CHILDREN, BEAST, Aslath snarled commandingly to Zesa. Shmee flinched, casting an apologetic glance to Meira. Still... Meira knew that flitters on the Hatching Grounds were forbidden, right? Arlo sunk lower onto Shmee's shoulder, trying to pretend he wasn't there so people wouldn't complain about unfair treatment. Good thing his bonded had the queen, or else he would be on the opposite side of the Weyr!
"I'll go get him," Shmee told Meira with a quick nod. Smoothing back Pasine's hair one last time, she murmured, "You'll be all right, love." And what was this? Shmee smiled weakly. Pasine wasn't exactly being nice, but she couldn't blame her. Being ripped to shreds was bound to make someone grumpy. No matter, she would keep checking in on her. Clutching Shei to her hip, she darted off toward the man.
"Jermayan!" she called. "There's a bad mauling over there, with a girl, and they're going to need more help!"
--
The Christmas Lights Blue looked around timidly, first at the boys. His should be a boy. Confidently, he waddled over the sands to the boys. How exciting! Any minute, he could get his hungry stomach stuffed full to the brim with joy and... joyness! He cooed pleasantly, sniffing each boy in turn. As he busied himself with this task, the final egg, the Stars at Night Egg made a crunching noise as a green head burst through. She crooned flirtatiously to the crowd, and as she climbed out, she flicked her tail seductively. She was definitely pretty, wasn't she?
The blue snorted. Yes, but not as pretty as His would be! He immediately got lost in a daydream about the type of person His would be. Strong? Yes, of course. Kind? Naturally! Creative? Whyever not? Handsome? He paused his daydreams for a minute, looking at the boys with an odd look over his animated expression. ...Handsome? He snorted. No! How silly could he be? Of course his wasn't handsome! He turned to the girls. No, his was beautiful! He made a purring sound as the Stars at Night Green chose a girl from the crowd. Ironically, it was the boy T'rea's twin sister, Morea. She grinned, her smile carrying an odd look of beauty. Oh, Morea, my name is Heith, the green cooed.
Ignoring her, the blue approached an odd bundle of girls. One girl who looked like she was sleeping, and another girl, who had red paint on her. Now, why did she have red paint? He chirruped curiously, and butted Saeo gently. This was her! His beautiful, beautiful Mine! Saeo, Saeo, beautiful beautiful Saeo! Why does my Saeo have funny red paint on her? Did you dress yourself up like a queen just for you Cherilith? Oh yes, you must have known your Cherilith was coming today! You didn't have to paint yourself though. Cherilith loves you anyway!
With that last Impression, that Hatching ended-- but not the excitement, for many candidates desperately needed to be tidied up...

Shmee stared helplessly as a girl-- one that she had met-- was getting mauled viciously. Little scrapes from dragonets were normal, but this was far too much. She hesitated, looking at T'rid. She would go down to the Sands and help the girl, too, and help restore order. She couldn't leave Shei with T'rid, though... Well, she'd have to take the babe with her. It wasn't like Shei knew what blood was, right? The mother was torn, but she knew better than to leave her babe with an idiot. Without a single word spoken to T'rid, she bolted down to the Sands. Aslath regarded her with whirling orange eyes. She was not pleased with this turn of events. Though she didn't like any of her candidates, they shouldn't be mauled this viciously. She'd have to speak to her son later about rudeness. Still, he was only a baby, so they couldn't blame him too much... right? And then her gold egg had hatched a bronze... This was definitely an odd Hatching. Well, she always knew something was wrong about the queen egg! It turned out to be a gender-confused egg!
Still balancing red-headed Shei on her hip and Arlo on her shoulder, she ran lightly across the sands, a hard feat, considering sand is hard to run through. She suppressed a groan at seeing the sand near the girl was crimson with stains. Kneeling beside the girl, she gently began to smooth her mussed hair from her face. Looking around, she glared at the candidates around her. "Candidates, return to your places now," she commanded. Shards, she wished someone was here who could hold Shei. But she was not giving her to a candidate, especially as there were many maulings. And weyrlings had baby dragons on their hands. No, Shmee would keep a hold of her babe. Turning back to Pasine, she took up the role of comforter as the healers got busy. "You'll be all right, love," Shmee said tenderly. Mothering instincts took over completely for the candidate-girl. Healers were the type to forget about consoling the injured-- they always concentrated too much on their jobs, which wasn't necessarily a bad trait. But Shmee could help take care of the girl in the kind way.
--
The Five Golden Rings Bronze was far from happy. Why was everyone looking at the bleeding girl now instead of him? Wasn't he shinier than her? Irritated, he marched right up to one of the boys that wasn't looking at him-- Danar-- and smacked him down into the sands with his claws, scratching up his arm. Satisfied, the grumpy bronze then stalked off to look at the rest of the boys. All eyes would be on him now, yes? He took this moment to preen, flaunting off his lovely dark bronze hide. He had tricked them into thinking he was a queen. Well, he should be a queen, but no matter. Being a bronze was almost as good. He let out a loud croon, looking around at his choices. So many good boys to choose from! Of course, he was going to take his sweet time in choosing the very best. The Winter Wonderland Green, clearly irritated with this show, decided to cut to the chase.
The fine young creature marched right up to Zaqx, with no fanfare at all, saying, He's taking too long, and I wanted to pick my beloved Za'x before he even smelled you. I am Irylth.
Of course, this irritated the bronze quite a bit. Grumpily, he strode up to his boys and confidently cozied himself around Keirin. Well, Ke'rin-mine, we are now partners. From this point on, you are a very important rider. Now, feed me, for Jaymith is one hungry bronze.
At this point, a mini-explosion happened. The quiet Hot Cocoa Egg shattered, sending its shards flying in every direction. Any candidate that dared stand too close would find themselves being rained upon by the brown and white eggshell. When the dust cleared, a teal-blue dragon was sitting sulkily where the the egg once was. Mine-C'vin~ he whined. Your Mallowth hurt himself on the shards! Can you please come help me, my nice C'vin?
Even as this occurred, the Christmas Lights Egg gained longer and wider cracks until a powder blue hide was visible through them. The Stars at Night Egg continued to wiggle, as well, and long cracks began to weaken the shell. The Hatching was almost over, depending now on these final two eggs...

The Jingle Bells Green didn't seem to care that she left a young candidate in immense pain. No, she had other, more pressing agenda at hand! With a stately warble, she slowly approached a flirtatious young man named Torea. She flicked her tail sweetly to him. Oh, mine, T'rea, that idiot girl was not for me. No girl could ever be. But /you/... Yes, your Rioth likes you quite a bit! The boy grinned, and smirked at Saeo before stalking off the sands with the harsh green. The Rudolph Brown peeked through his shell over to them, clearly disconcerted. He didn't like her attitude. She'd probably make fun of him... Nervously, he shook himself free of the rest of his shell with his head and wings. Immediately, one could see that, on his poor little snout was an enormous red-brown splotch. Fortunately, he didn't seem to realize yet that he had it, or else the poor thing would probably be a quivering wreck.
As he was getting his bearings, the Icicle Egg hatched in a shower of sharp shards. The blue that emerged was obviously much more confident than his brown brother. Giving him a little hiss of disdain, he strolled confidently-- to the boys. He seemed to be similar to Rioth in the way of examining candidates; he, too, chose to look at the girls first. And, like Rioth, he plucked a girl from the crowd-- Pasine. In what onlookers will feel is a horrid bout of deja-vu, the blue sniffed her. Immediately dissatisfied, the blue shrieked in fury. Only now, his way of letting loose in anger wasn't simply stomping on her. He threw Pasine into the sands and literally attacked her, diving at her stomach and chest with his claws, trying to rip through fabric, to see if she were hiding a new candidate under her robes. It was only when he was able to see that there was blood that he gave up-- and decided to look in her hair instead. Pinning her shoulder down, he seized her hair by his teeth, pulling her impatiently.
Dangerously, Aslath growled from her position on the sands. Innocently, the Icicle Blue looked up, promptly letting go of Pasine's hair as if he hadn't been holding it at all. Without a trace of apology, he clambered off of the unfortunate soul, and walked along to the boys without any second thoughts, straight for Neikolai. He prodded the boy gently, without any trace of violence. Oops, N'lai, but oh well. Kyssith would like food now. Sound good? he asked conversationally, completely ignoring the fact that there was blood staining his claws...
The Rudolph Brown was staring dumbly at the scene before him. Nonono, he didn't like it. Blood?! He let out a sad croon before walking toward the boys, with his tail between his legs. Anxiously, he prodded Alifyr with his snout. Oh no, A'fyr-bonded, is the girly going to be okay? She isn't as good as you, but your Rudolth doesn't want her to be hurt...!
Two eggs then hatched simultaneously. The lesser-noticed one, the Winter Wonderland Egg, gave birth to a tone little green, who looked around at her crowd happily. The other, the Five Golden Rings Egg shattered loudly and commandingly. Even Aslath looked on curiously as the beautiful golden shell splintered to reveal a...
...handsome young bronze! He bellowed triumphantly. Oh, how lovely, to have everyone staring at him at his hatching!

What else was there to do but glare? Shmee did so as T'rid came sulkily to their box. "Weyrleader, you are expected to be on time at these functions," she told him coldly. She was still bitter about their last encounter at the Touching. This idiot boy had to grow up. She wished fervently that S'rei would be well enough at Aslath's next Flight-- or, at least, someone more competent than this brat. She ground her teeth and bounced Shei firmly. Fortunately, the babe was too distracted to see her mother's irritation. Shei was still fixated on the Hatching. The little girl seemed absolutely fascinated by the first Impression of the little green, and even of the little mauling that happened. Shmee wasn't too concerned about the boy. It was building of character. Maulings were perfectly normal. She surveyed the eggs briefly. She hoped they would have many stronger dragonets. That first green looked far too small to be too good...
Peppeth is strong, Aslath said positively. She may be small, but I have utmost faith in her. Shmee smiled weakly. She hoped Aslath's mother's intuition proved right. It is, Aslath replied confidently. Arlo crooned, and nuzzled Shmee's shoulder tenderly. He could sense His' discomfort. But she shouldn't be uncomfortable! It was a Hatching! A day of joy!
Aslath wouldn't ignore her mate, of course. Good morning, Corinth, she said regally. Our children so far are strong, do you not agree?
--
The Eggnog Green grumbled irritably as she watched the quicker Peppeth stalk off with what could have been her girl. Well, no matter. What was done was done, and there was bound to be another choice. The green brightened considerably. Yes, she could feel that Hers was in this messy throng somewhere. Making a noise similar to a coo, she stumbled forward, with pudgy green legs (with, it was odd to note, had red accents on her joints), and looked at each girl in turn. Was it... Pasine? She sniffed. No. Not Pasine. What about... Saeo? Another sniff, and another huff. No, it wasn't this odd girl either. Well, who did she want? Then, another epiphany! She crowed happily, bounding along to... Raylin! Ah, yes, her beautiful, beautiful Raylin! She made more sounds, only sounding like purrs. She butted the girl gently. Beautiful, beautiful Raylin! Please feed your little Ebolath, yes, that food looks /awfully/ good!
The Presents and Bows Blue looked over at the greenpairs sulkily. He was hungry, too! Well, he might as well continue on with his search. The sooner he chose, the sooner he would eat, right? Again, he cheered almost instantaneously. Yes! His would feed him until his blue belly was stretched full! He uttered a joyful croon, and as he stood, he was about to make his was toward the boys when a very, very loud crack interrupted him. Even the blue looked back at the Snowman Egg who had burst open at this moment. A pleased-looking brown sat among the shards, flicking them away casually. The blue snorted. Silly interrupting brother! Happily, the blue bounded forward back to the boys, making a bee-line dash for Toumke. Oh, MINE-T'KE! I LOVE YOU! GARAETH HAPPENS TO LOVE YOU VERY VERY MUCH! FOOD NOW, YES? the blue squealed happily, jumping right on top of the boy. He was so excited! He had his bonded, his food... What else could one dragon need?
The Snowman Brown snorted, clearly amused by the antics of his lower-siblings. But as he was busy watching them, the Jingle Bells Egg took a moment to split cleanly in two. From the shards stepped a dainty-looking green, with a fire in her eyes and a giant hunger in her stomach. Boldly stepping forward, she decided to... examine the girls first. Grabbing a hold of Saeo's tunic, she pulled the girl close to her, sniffing her. But seeing the girl wasn't for her, she hissed, and violently threw the girl to the ground. Displeased, she took her sweet time in stomping across the poor girl with her baby-claws over to the boys. If the other girls were like this one, she did not want to even bother looking. Idiot girl could never Impress a dragon!
As that drama occurred, the Rudolph Egg made a sickening crack. Falling onto its side, it wriggled determinedly before a brown claw, then head, managed to stick up through the shell. He chirruped inquisitively, unsure. Was he doing this right? Was he supposed to do it differently...?
Amused, the Snowman Brown warbled encouragement to his brother before stepping back toward the boys. Well, time's a-wasting. He had to choose. Gently, with much more care than the violent Jingle Bells Green, he nuzzled Cloar. C'oar, I am not like the mean ones over there, but I am hungry. My name is Frosstyth, by the way, he added with a delicate croon.
Simultaneously, other eggs began to move and crack, but they were unnoticed for the most part-- save for the Five Golden Rings Egg. A large crack began to divide up the middle...

Fortunately for Jermayan, Aslath wasn't concentrating looking at the stands. Rather, she was staring down each candidate in turn, looking for any signs of weakness. She growled. She didn't like any of them, quite honestly, but Shmee knew she only felt that way because she was being broody. She'd be back to her old self in a few days. I suppose it /is/ good that they chose to show up at all Aslath admitted slowly. Shmee smiled. Well, if Aslath could find good in a bad situation, then it was all going to be just fine. She bounced Shei on her lap adoringly. Where on Pern was that idiot T'rid? Well, at least she wouldn't have to listen to his groanings about the Hatching if he didn't show up. Still, she would rather not be alone for the Hatching. She cast a casual look around the Stands. Robika was on the other side of the Hatching Ground, so it looked like she would be alone today. She grimaced. She really needed to make more friends.
Looking back down to the candidates, she, like Aslath, scrutinized them. There were some of the ones that she'd met. Would Selenitas Hold prove again that they had strong rider stock? Most of the girls were from there, it seemed like...
But her musings ended as the Candycane Egg split open first. It was a surprise that this was the one that chose to hatch first-- it was so small that people might've thought weeks ago that it would be a dud. Still, it proved them wrong as a tiny green pushed her way through the glimmering red and white shards. Further inspection proved that this little green was striped; her bright green hide was striped evenly with dark green on every inch of her body. Brightly, she looked up at the candidates. Lifting her wings a little to fan them of the egg fluid, she looked at her onlookers curiously. So many precious candidates, ohmymymy...!
As she was getting her bearings, the Presents and Bows Egg also broke shell. With a triumphant warble, a dark blue dragonet shook itself free of his shell. It wasted no time in trotting over to the boys. However, this was all he seemed to know. He paused, unsure of who to pick next. But goodness, he sure was a hungry dragon! Overcome by hunger, he sat down, tiredly trying to choose without a single drop of food in his shrivelling stomach! No matter-- he'd be fed soon! He knew he would be! He crooned. He just needed to concentrate on picking his beloved!
Quietly, the Eggnog Egg also split completely open, revealing a lime-green dragonet. Eagerly, the dragon split into a run, aiming for the boys. However, in doing so, she tripped over her tail. With a screech, she fell on top of poor Corvin. Apologetically, she tried removing herself, but her claw got stuck on his shoulder. It was then that she realized: She didn't want a boy. She wanted a girl! Impatiently, she pulled herself off of him-- but split Corvin's shoulder open in the process.
The Candycane Green screeched defiantly. What was this now? Nooo, this other green couldn't steal her bonded! Running as quickly as she could to the girls, she butted Farryl lovingly. Oh, mine-Farryl, I got you! You are mine! I am your Peppeth!
As the first Impression was made, the Snowman Egg began to crack, with the button-pattern on his shell being connected by long, heavy cracks. The Jingle Bells Egg, too, chose this moment to gain many thin, spidery cracks on its golden side. Beginning to wiggle was the Rudolph Egg and the Five Golden Rings Egg, but no cracks were visible-- yet.

Thank Faranth that she was already awake. Shmee had awoken a couple hours earlier because that was when Shei woke up, and already, she could hear and feel the hum vibrating throughout the Weyr. Well, she could hardly feel it in her feet where she was in her Weyr, but she could certainly hear it as a noise embedded in the walls, closer than the roar of the Falls. Even Shei felt it, and she looked inquisitively up at her mother where she sat on the floor, playing with wooden blocks. “Ma, good?” Shei asked, throwing her blocks down. Shmee nodded lovingly. Even her little daughter was able to understand that the humming was a good sound. Shmee yawned, and sat up from where she lay on the couch. S’rei was still sleeping, so she wouldn’t wake him up. She had to make sure he got as much sleep as he needed! Arlo quickly soared over to Shmee, landing on her shoulder daintily. She smiled. His little blue throat was vibrating with the hatching hum.
Scooping up Shei, she darted up the stairs, starting the long and eager journey to the Hatching Ground. Meanwhile, Aslath was pacing the grounds, look anxiously to her eggs. They were already showing intense signs of life. Four of them were wiggling, and some even showed cracks. Where were her candidates? Doubting their ability to show up before her children hatched, she anxiously broadcasted a message to them. Candidates, my eggs hatch. Come quickly if you wish to meet them. Hints of nervousness filled her tone. Would they make it in time to greet the children? The last thing she wanted was for them to lose hope and vanish before the horrible urchins arrived. Oh, Aslath hated Hatchings. There was the constant worry of whether or not her children would live, and she almost always thought that the candidates were a disgusting slimy lot...
Shmee slid into her seat in the Weyrleaders' Box, looking down anxiously. Ah, there was the Candycane Egg and the Eggnog Egg, both with long cracks running up their shells. Any more, and they'd certainly be out. Other wiggling eggs included the Presents and Bows Egg and the Snowman Egg. Shmee frowned, but Arlo pressed against her ear, humming his song reassuringly. Shei, too, was mesmerized, staring down at the eggs with a look of quiet amazement.
Corinth, hurry, they hatch, Aslath said to Corinth. Hopefully, that idiot of a bronze would hurry up and get here, or else he'd miss the birthing of his own children! Faranth only knows that would be a terrible thing!
