Name: Arga Age: 41 Birthday: May 2981 Gender: Female Sexual Orientation: Heterosexual Rank: Sr. Weyrwoman of Inverness
Appearance:
Arga is a tall, willowy thing, only standing and inch shorter than 5’ 10”. However, if you are looking for solid, Arga is not. The woman never had much staying power and could best be described as a bit frail looking. She no doubt would have been considered beautiful in her younger days. Pale, platinum blonde hair, straight as a board in posture. Large, light blue eyes. Aquiline nose. Long, slender neck. Alabaster skin. Ah, but her body is now shows the strain from her years under C’leon’s rule, and though her treatment and life has vastly improved their remains a certain frailness to her features that belies a deep inner strength. She is not any ravishing beauty but she portrays herself with a certain softness and new light that is hard to ignore.
In her manner of dress Arga prefers any color that does not make her look washed out and that highlights the unique lightness of her eyes. She tries to stay out of the sun as much as possible so that her pale skin does not burn and when she is out and about it is not unusual for her to be wearing a wide brimmed hat to keep the sun’s rays at bay.
Personality:
At one time Arga was, quite simply, a broken and listless woman. There was nothing whatsoever in the world that excited her and she gazed upon her surroundings with dead eyes. However since her rescue from C’leon some life has come back into the woman. She will never be what she was once upon a time but she has made vast improvements since J’lorin took Benden and freed her and Baith. Unlike some who hide their emotions, the Weyrwoman is re-learning hers. While under C’leon’s rule she become truly emotionless, setting up a barrier between herself and reality. With the bronzer gone and J’lorin and Baith’s encouragement the woman has begun to dismantle that barrier and let herself feel again. Though she may never be able to fully grasp what she has lost Arga has improved in leaps and bounds.
While all men used to command her and she served them as they would see fit those days have long passed. Though she is by no means a dominate person Arga now chooses when she will stand up for something. And usually is able to stand her ground with both Baith and J’lorin’s support to buoy her. The woman‘s former spirit has returned to some extent and she performs her duties as the Sr. Weyrwoman with surprising efficiency. Arga may be a bit frail but she is one woman who absolutely knows her place and does her job to the best of her ability. The weyr’s domestic side runs smoothly under her and Inverness certainly benefits from it.
Arga still however is quite firm and unyielding when dealing with the women beneath her just as she was at Benden once. All business she is and expects those under her, especially the Jr. Queens, to perform the duties they were impressed into. Management of the weyr and the continuation of the dragon’s lines should be their sole concern. One soft spot Arga allows herself to have still however is her twenty turn old greenrider daughter Areon, who’s true father remains shrouded in suspicion though is supposedly C’leon.
History:
Arga was the firstborn of Yeman, the head of the minor hold of Greystones. From a very early age, Yeman sought to find a suitable husband for Arga, preferably the eldest son of one of the larger holds. Benden was unlikely, but there was always Nerat, or perhaps Bitra. Thus the young girl was trained to become a lady. She suffered extensive lessons in Pern’s history, etiquette, elocution, and other such niceties that only served a woman well were she to walk amongst the nobility. It was never asked what she desired. After a time, she wasn’t certain she had any desires at all, though she had wanted to join her brothers at the Stonemason Hall. Yeman would not hear of such foolishness, of course.
The turns passed, the girl coming to an age where a man’s suit might be seriously considered. Though many came, her father refused to give his daughter to just anyone, and, though she was the picture of perfection in manner and appearance, Arga treated her suitors with a coldness comparable to a glacier’s chill. She was fully eighteen turns before Nerat’s lordling showed any interest. Ironically enough, it was at this time that Arga was searched by one of Benden’s searchriders, leaving her father with a bitter taste in his mouth. She could have refused, after all. But with a gold egg on the sands for the first time in many turns, and a chance to escape the fate her father had laid for her, it really was no contest. Arga was quietly disowned from Yeman’s line when she accepted Benden’s invitation.
It was easy to see who the other queen candidates were, just at a glance. So many of them seemed to be relatives of some of the dragonriders, or simply arrogant beyond belief. Only one would Impress that gold egg. And most of those she saw here could never hope to attract even a green. Arga had been raised to walk amongst nobility, and was a contained woman, besides. She knew her chances of Impression were slim. Nevertheless, on the sands, golden Baith quickly chose this minor hold’s daughter.
Arga and Baith learned quickly from the Weyrwoman, entering into their weyrlinghood at the start of the war between Benden and Fort. They soon became deeply involved with the running of the weyr. The senior goldpair was aged and fading, and could not perform their duties as they once had. Just over a turn after Arga Impressed Baith, the two passed on, leaving these weyrlings as the Senior Weyrwoman by default.
Four months later, Baith rose, a week or so after Benden’s Weyrleader fell in battle. Morsrath caught her. Arga, a woman of substantial inner strength, found herself pitted against the sort of creature she’d never encountered before. C’leon was a chauvinist through and through. Further, he was a physical man, resorting to violence to get what he wanted – and Arga had never before endured the heavy hand of a man. Her spirit was strong, at first. She fought him with everything she had, desperately trying to cling to the power that was hers by rights. Whenever she could, Arga attempted entice other Benden bronzeriders, trying to create a rapport between Baith and their bronzes. It was during this time that Arga got pregnant and bore a daughter who she immediately named Areon in an attempt to pass the little girl off as C’leon’s when in truth the baby had been sired by Ja’kin of bronze Demotaeth. The little girl was quickly given to a wetnurse and then fostered out to save her from any designs C’leon might have regarding her.
Another flight. Again, Morsrath captured Baith. The woman began to despair. Up until this point, many had held back, remaining neutral in the event that C’leon and Morsrath would soon be replaced. It now seemed that C’leon may well remain Weyrleader for a time. It was wisest to conform to his ideas. More and more, Arga found herself closed off, many dreading the idea of consorting with her in the event that it might displease the Weyrleader. At about this time, the queen weyrling from Baith and Morsrath’s first clutch rose. Despite having two clutching queens, however, Benden was suffering from a shortage of dragons due to the war. Arga found out that C’leon had commanded research and experimentation to be conducted on the weyrlings, to attempt to increase the clutch sizes.
The Weyrwoman, who had lost courage for a time, found reason to stand against C’leon. He seemed to welcome the challenge. Systematically, he began breaking the woman down, shaming her at every possible turn, public humiliation becoming a common thing. And, within the privacy of their weyr – C’leon had insisted they share it, despite his frequent liaisons with any female that moved – he continued to dominate Arga in every sense. After a time she could no longer bring herself to care about the weyrlings. She was reduced to a mere shell of her former self.
Baith, during this time, had been actively trying to keep the weyr from spiraling down this hole. Arga’s submission to C’leon made things still harder. And again, Morsrath caught her. By that time there were three clutching queens, two of which had been administered the drug battery with varying success – and many of those larger clutches contained horribly deformed hatchlings. A new bronzepair arrived at Benden shortly thereafter. Arga and Baith pursued them for a time, hoping to bring them to a point where they might be able to challenge C’leon and Morsrath, but it was not meant to be. Perhaps wisely, Salenth and S’rei refused to have anything to do with the Weyrwoman and her Queen.
With all the bronzeriders who might have opposed the Weyrleader dead or transferred, Arga fell deeper into despair. She began to let herself go, her mind eroding along with her pride, until the woman became a mere shell of herself. C’leon and Morsrath had solidified their power over the weyr to the point that they closed off Baith’s flights to all but Morsrath. With that last action, all was lost. Arga believed she would never escape. Despair turned into a sort of death, and the Weyrwoman became little more than a walking corpse in the weyr that was supposed to be hers to lead.
At least until a Benden spy came to her with news of a certain man in Fort. One J’lorin of Illumiath and though Arga wasn’t quite sure at the time what to do with this information, Baith was. The gold subtlety and carefully directed her bonded like a puppet and, with the help of Ja’kin of bronze Demotaeth during the Siege of Selenitas, Baith was able to finally free herself and Arga from C’leon once and for all by arranging his death and bringing in J’lorin from Fort to lead Benden.
Perhaps what Baith didn’t completely account for however was Illumiath. From the time of her first flight with him the Sr. Gold became enamored with the bronze and his rider. In the end this didn't turn out to be a bad thing. J’lorin was nothing if not polite and sensitive to her bonded and under the bronzepair Arga and Baith began the long slow process of healing what C’leon had broken. While J’lorin struggled to secure and control his facet of Benden’s leadership, Baith began the process of moping up the domestic side as her bonded Arga grew stronger mentally and physically month by month. Eventually Arga started helping her gold and by the time Selenitas allied with Benden for a final strike at Fort the woman was mainly in control of her own destiny again. Arga also finally reunited with her fifteen year old daughter who had impressed a green dragon from Lyartenth’s last clutch of 3015.
With her mind and body relatively sound Arga , along with Jr. Weyrwoman Pariah, supported their weyr from home in the final battle with Fort’s forces and the mop up of the remaining Fort rebels afterward. When the summit was called Arga stood proudly by J’lorin’s side through them, maintaining a strong presence and making sure her voice was heard. Though she was still not her former self it was evident that the older woman had made vast improvements. As Inverness was built under her direction she continued to improve, proud of what she was accomplishing.
Now Arga and Baith rule their facet of duties in Inverness, as the Sr. Weyrwoman pair, with substantial strength and integrity. And Arga it seems has finally come back into her own.
~~~~~
Dragon Name: Baith Age: 25 turns (Born Jan 2998) Color: Gold
Appearance:
Baith is a beauty. Though not nearly as large as the largest of all golds in history, Ramoth, she is certainly Pern’s largest senior queen at this time. She is a soft, goldenrod hue, with darker markings along her underbelly. Most of her size comes from her length, as Baith has a slender form similar to her rider’s. She is swift and more maneuverable than the average queen, with an abnormally large wingspan.
Personality:
There is a certain determination in Baith, an inner strength that has allowed her to endure the turns that nearly crushed her rider. However, she was young enough when she first fell under Morsrath’s influence that, despite her dislike for him, Baith tended to listen to and believe the bronze’s lies. Her training was incomplete under Gilanath such that she was, for awhile, unaware of her true power. Though in recent turns the gold has certainly come into her own. She remains perhaps a bit malleable by bronzes she favors but lucky for her Illumiath acts more as partner then master.
Baith has an immense amount of dignity and lives with never-ending hope and faith when things get rough. She is a quiet, patient creature, and in fact this allowed her to bide her time until liberation came for her and her rider. The gold is, effectively, strong and stable knowing exactly how to instill calm and obedience under those she rules. Her affections for her children run strong and she loves her bonded more then anything, though she has become more of a mother then partner to Arga now. Her loyalty in matters of mating remains solely bound to bronze Illumiath and it seems that nothing short of his death could ever inspire her to choose another.
Name: Liosa Age: 28 Birthday: August 2994 Gender: Female Sexual Orientation: Heterosexual Rank: Jr. Weyrwoman
Physical Appearance:
Young as she is, Liosa looks even younger then her true age, always appearing to look at least ten turns younger then she actually is. The girl has a very childlike face, heartshaped and undeniably pretty in the girlish way most young women have about them. Her complexion is excellent, if somewhat pale. Everything about her suggests a certain delicacy, from the small, slender frame to her wide blue eyes.
Blonde, her hair is straight and long, well-maintained. She pierced her nose in a random act of rebellion after receiving a lecture from R'anatar on how Weyrwomen were supposed to behave, but that's perhaps the only thing about her that doesn't scream youth and innocence. She still is prone to wearing baggy comfortable clothes that seem too big for her and only dresses up for special occasions. Even then her choices of dress hardly show off much and are quite reserved.
Personality:
Liosa is, without a doubt, much like a the flower. Quiet, demure, pretty...and friendly spirited enough to draw a smile from even the most hardened warriors. She's a little indulged, it's true, but not so much to be completely spoiled and unruly. The girl is smart enough to have a decent conversation with, not so self-absorbed or vacuous as to be generally irritating, but definitely not of a high enough intelligence to actually threaten any of the men around her.
In short, she's pretty much ideal as a jewel or doll to her weyr and not much else. The young woman doesn't particularly approve of bloodshed, but she finds the warriors gallant. (Likely because she's never actually seen them fight firsthand.) Her attraction and, yes, even love for R'anatar was true and deep enough. Even though at times she surely realized that he was using her. In fact Liosa couldn’t help but want to please him most of the time. Even though at times he was heavy handed he also apologized so nicely. The woman has yet in fact to get over R’anatar’s death and now treats most of the men around her politely but with a certain type of detached indifference. Even her flight partners are shed as soon as she can get them to leave her quarters.
R’anatar’s death has certainly had an effect on the young woman and though she is dealing better then before Liosa can’t help but feel quite a bit of hatred towards those who cause his death. Which makes flights won by Higginth ever the more bothersome for she can’t stand the bronze’s rider. If not for Doryith Liosa would probably have chosen to follow R’anatar in death. As it is the woman bears her grief silently and can only be forced into action when Arga and Baith will not let her be.
Prone to occasional hissy fits when things don’t go her way the fits are nothing to write home about. They usually disappear quickly and she's easily cajoled. All Liosa wants is a little attention and caring from those around her, and she responds well to anyone willing to give it to her. Unless they had something to do with the death of her former lover. The easiest way to rein in her strong will is simply to be kind to her. Of course, if Liosa ever did decide to work against someone, her charm could be used to good effect. The woman may not be the smartest goldrider around, but she's definitely crafty enough to give people a headache if she turns her hand against them.
History:
Fortbred, Liosa was born to a drudge who volunteered to moth for one of the many greenflights. It was her father, V'san, who raised her, however, along with his lover, U'me. The two men adored the little girl, and were perhaps a little over-indulgent, but Liosa's naturally sweet personality kept her from becoming too spoiled. As she grew older, she wanted to join the ranks of dragonriders, to Impress a green and fight. Romanticizing the concept of battle and glory, the girl looked forward to Standing and Impressing.
It was likely fortunate that she didn't Impress a green at that first hatching. The child was far too sensitive to weather war well, even if it was Fort and not their brutal enemy that she'd be fighting for. It didn't take her long to start working in the infirmary, and many of the riders who ended up there loved to have the girl around, wide-eyed and listening raptly to all their war stories, fawning over them. She was only thirteen when she first met R'anatar, his ear nearly fully separated from his head. The man intrigued her, and he was the Weyrsecond! The second best warrior in all of Fort!
When mention of him in passing to her two fathers brought only praise from the mens' lips, her hero-worship of R'anatar was more or less ensured. Doryith cracked shell, Impressing to the fourteen-turn-old at the beginning of the next turn. Even though she wanted to fight, she adored her gold hatchling, lavishing the dragon with all her love as the two basked in the attentions of those around them.
Before they left weyrlinghood, however, a most unfortunate tragedy took place, the evil C'leon coming and killing D'loro and Kamerai! Liosa could only be thankful that Elaira was weyrwoman...until she disappeared, too. The girl had absolutely no idea how to lead a Weyr - and she only a weyrling! Naturally, she turned to R'anatar, who seemed only too willing to help. He was never cross or impatient with her, and his advice proved to be quite sound. When he asked if she'd like him to remove some of the burden of her duties, she was only too willing to allow him to do it. He was so wise and surely she needed the help.
Liosa's growing crush on R'anatar only became stronger with the passing turns. When she asked him if he would...initiate...her and he turned her down politely, she could only take it as respect. (Not that he could do much wrong in her eyes, anyway.) It shouldn't have been surprising that Doryith chose Wereth in her flight. The young gold was almost as blinded by Wereth's success as Liosa was R'anatar's. Notably, however, the man still kept himself apart from Liosa after that first Flight, and the girl was beginning to grow annoyed. He liked her, didn't he? He certainly acted like he did! So why didn't he want to be with her?
After a rather unfortunate incident when the girl got it into her head to travel outside the Weyr and nearly got herself abducted by a couple of Benden riders, she knew R'anatar's anger for the first time. He chastised her harshly...to which she responded to his lecture on how Weyrwomen should behave by going out and getting her nose pierced. Flaunting this bit of rebellion in front of him, he laughed openly at her, in front of everyone, and the girl simply reacted. She slapped the man in a fit of picque.
His reaction was instantaneous...though at least he whisked her into a private setting first. The spat between the two somehow translated into a rather violent session of lovemaking. After which he finally moved in with her. Liosa remained convinced that he loved her, even if he never said it. Even if he did beat her hard enough that day that she had to stay in their weyr for a sevenday to avoid rumors circulating when J'lorin went missing with his entire wing. He apologized quite nicely for it, after all. In truth he never touched her again. But then he hardly needed to. Liosa loved R’anatar to distraction and there was little she would not do for him, following all his instructions to the letter.
She was pretty much completely oblivious to the goings on in her own weyr. R’anatar and the headwoman took care of everything leaving the goldrider to worry only about Doryith and playing house. It wasn’t until that last final battle that Liosa saw and understood the bloody side of war for the first time. Even then she did not personally see R’anatar’s death, as a group of black ops warriors subdued her and led her away. She heard about it afterwards and felt Doryith’s sorrow as Wereth passed between. She may have fought back then had it been possible for her but Liosa had never fought for a day in her life, let alone hurt anyone. In the end, quite shocked by it, all she was assigned a guard for every hour of the day due to concerns that she might suicide. In truth she may have if not for Doryith, for though the gold was sorrowed as well by Wereth’s loss, she had eggs on the sands and the dragons of her weyr needed her now more then ever.
Liosa was forced to continue and though she still missed R’anatar, the pain grew duller with the passing of the turns. She was of no help in the Summit, barely speaking up at all, though once she was assigned to Inverness she had no choice but to perform her duties under Arga and Baith.
Though Liosa can’t say she holds any love for Arga, even she has to admit that the woman is a good teacher, and under her the young woman has finally begun to learn what it truly means to be a Weyrwoman. She just wishes it wouldn’t require so much work….
Dragon
Name: Doryith Color: Gold Age: 15 turns (Born 3008)
Physical Appearance:
Doryith is easily the smallest gold that Fort has seen since Grenostith was hatched. Some of Fort's bronzes are larger. This is undoubtedly a result of being sired by bronze Jrenth, who some might have been mistaken for a brown because of his size.
The rest of her appearance, however, is very definitely indicative of Fort. Her coloring is pale enough to be almost a pure white, the glimmer of the celestial bodies shining on the fine gold threads of color that curl and twine all over her hide making her glimmer with that familiar seductive, metallic sheen all golds posses. Yes, she's most definitely a gold, even if the how can be hard for others to really describe. Further, her body is long and lightly-muscled, as opposed to her more athletic brethren. Her delicacy compliments her rider's perfectly in fact. Doryith’s flights will never be as long as some of the other queen’s as a result.
Personality:
Doryith is very much self-possessed and spoiled. She's not openly cruel or anything - she views the dragons of her weyr as hers and she would never want anything bad to happen to them - but they're all still clearly inferior. A dragon's worth is measured by the worth she gives them. Namely, the more she favors them, the more important they are. This should go without saying.
It annoys her when she's not being paid her due attention, but to acknowledge that annoyance would be beneath her. She treats the creatures that do not pay her the attention they should with a distant politeness, while openly fawning over the ones who are acting as they should toward their queen. The bronze that caters to her the most, of course, receives special attention from her, though she's quick to drape herself over other bronzes if he fails to admire her as much as she feels he should.
She loves her bonded of course and would go to great lengths to protect the girl should she need it. In fact Doryith is openly scolding to those who displease her rider in any way shape or form. In matters of leading she is prone to pick the decisions that support her followers best, as they in turn make things easier for her. Yes all Doryith’s decisions have one defining factor in common. They all must all benefit her in some way.
Kymans, aka 'WTF is that?!' Written by Ruby nightmare creatures for the intrepid explorerbiologyA Kyman looks like nothing quite as much as it looks like a streamlined deer, or maybe an antelope; something along those lines. Sure, their back legs tend more towards the feline's strength, and all four feet have hooves that are dangerously sharp, but there is something distinctly innocent and forest-like about the animal. Even vicious incisors, extending past the slim lower jaw and coming to violent points that hint at a mouth full of razor sharp teeth, cannot detract from the fact that this animal really doesn't look like it wants to kill you. In fact, it's weird - but kinda cute. It is easy to overlook the extra arms, tucked in tight to the creature's chest, but they are there. They're very thin, and look fragile at first glance, but they have the kind of claws on the end that can rip through flesh and even hardened leather (and, more practically, dirt) with little effort. These arms have an extraordinary range of movement, for slicing and dicing in every direction. Males and females look pretty much alike, approximately the same size and shape, but males have horns that curl back, down, and around, like a ram's. Most are shades of gray or brown, camouflaging well with the caves and tunnels that make up their homes, but many have unique green markings that get brighter as they age. As a result, the oldest Kymans are the easiest to spot... although they are rarely the easiest to kill. abilities & behaviorTheir big, liquid eyes are mostly blind in daylight, and see shades of gray overlayed with heat signatures in the dark. It is their noses that provide them with most of their information about the world, and they can literally smell emotions. In fact, the best way to get one to back down without killing it is to make yourself scarier than it is (much like chasing away a bear, except instead of being bigger than it is, you need to be less afraid, more dangerous and vicious in your own head than they are in theirs. This is a fairly impressive feat). They communicate in a kind of terrifying mammal-scream, much like rabbits. They also wave their extra arms together, and click their claws, in a kind of modified sign language. They're omnivorous, but especially like to eat draconids, and tunnelsnakes are easiest for them to catch (hence the underground living). They'd rather have wher or dragon, but it takes at least two of them to take down a wher, and more to get a dragon. Mostly they are interested in feeding themselves and taking care of their mates, but they have been known to torment smaller, weaker creatures on occasion. Beyond this predatory behavior, little about their day-to-day lifestyle is known. mating & relationshipsMated pairs are the closest bonds, but there are also loose family or mating groups which return to the same general area every year to pair off and produce offspring, although maybe 10%-20% of a group may strike out in search of another group at any given time, especailly if one group had a particularly high number of one sex born that year. For example, if 75% of the new babies are female, some of them might get the idea that not all of them are going to make it through mating, and try their luck with a different group. There are maybe four or five of these 'family groups' total, but the one best known to Selenitas mates in the closed-off innermost ring of the Weyr. There are maybe 40-50 pairs in this loose group. They scatter during all but six months of the two year cycle, congregating only to mate, give birth, and raise their children long enough to send them out on their own. Mated pairs and lone adolescents have been spotted in the tunnels at other times of the year, but their numbers are never as large as during mating season. Kymans mate once every two years in a month-long 'season', so each generation is approximately the same age. When the newest generation reaches sexual maturity (gestation is about 4 months so at about 20 months of age), all the creatures go back into season again. During this time, males and females pair off, often fighting to the death to keep their chosen mate. They mate for life... unless their old mate is killed by their new mate. Once all the creatures are paired up, the mating begins. After mating season, there is always an even number of males and females, as the spares are killed. They're quite touchy about their mates, and any threat to one will send the other into a kind of bloodlust-rage. Bad plan. They also only have one baby at a time, and about 50% of the time birthing the child kills the mother. It is fairly common for a 'husband' that loses his 'wife' to take the child as his mate the next year, if it is female and survives. There are no homogenous mated pairs - those that do not wish to produce offspring do not survive.
The Conclusion to the Dragon Wars~ A.K.A Selenitas Weyr Time Skip History. End of turn 3018 to beginning of turn 3023 Written by: Rei Turn 3018 - 3019 Old Enemies, New AlliesAt the end of turn 3018, with its secretive location still very much intact, the leading council of Selenitas weyr had to come to a decision. It was only a matter of time before the northern weyrs discovered the location of the subterranean weyr. Selenitas would have to finally emerge from hiding and take a stand in the northern battles that had been raging on since 2996. After careful consideration, it was decided that they would ally with Benden as the lesser of two evils. The council sent two former Benden riders on loan, Elysia of Onyth and Iskierka of Ioth, back to Benden to attempt to open negotiations with Benden Weyrleader J’lorin of bronze Illumiath. The attempt proved successful. Shortly thereafter Selenitas riders were sent in small groups to join with Benden wings in isolated border skirmishes where, wearing Benden colors and working with their allies, they accustomed themselves to Fort tactics and gained invaluable experience. Turn 3019 The Great WarThe first months of 3019 passed, and finally the time had come to put an end to the war once and for all. J’lorin and his Benden forces arrived in Fort territory en masse and, drawing a massive retaliation from the other Northern weyr. The Selenitas forces suddenly revealed themselves in a flanking maneuver shortly after the battle was joined. Meanwhile a separate force, led by Fort runaway M’gnum of Bronze Higginth and comprised almost entirely of members of Selenitas special ops Legatus Wing and Benden veterans, infiltrated Fort itself on foot. The small strike force overwhelmed the few remaining defenders, killing Fortian Weyrleader R’anatar of bronze Wereth. Defeated, leaderless, and confused the remaining Fort forces were thrown into disarray. A general rout ensued, the power that had once been Fort dividing into many smaller renegade bands. The majority of the rest of turn 3019 was spent hunting down and expelling these forces. Nine months after the decisive battle the all remaining Fort resistance was snuffed out by the combined might of Selenitas and Benden. Thus ended the decades-long war that would come to be known as the Dragon War. Turn 3020 End of an Era, Start of a new BeginningA Pern-wide summit must now be called to settle on what to do with the war-ravaged North. The summit consisted of all the ruling bodies on Pern: Weyrleaders Arga of Baith and J’lorin of Illumiath, the Selenitas ruling council and Kaegan of Milleth, every Lordholder and every Craftmaster. It was decided that there would be two weyrs: Selenitas in the south and a new centralized weyr in the north. All existing dragonriders were to be divided equally between those two weyrs. Each weyr would have at its head a single Weyrleader who would be elected to that position by a series of trials to be administered by a similar Pern wide counsel every four turns. Until such trials could be held in 3024, Ce'thian of bronze Sparath and S’rei of bronze Salenth would serve as interim Weyrleaders to Inverness and Selenitas Weyr respectively. But these were not to be the only changes. The holders would not rest until measures had been taken to further limit the power of the weyrs. Crafters would no longer be allowed to Impress, and current crafters at the Weyrs would be reassigned to the Holds where those who were also dragonriders would fill the role of Watchdragons. Each weyr would be permitted one dragonhealer, a healer, and two beastcrafters to maintain their feeding pens. Any other exception must be brought before the Summit for approval. Furthermore, there would be no more Searches. A pre-determined number of candidate-age youth would be sent from each hold to their perspective weyr, after which all who didn’t Impress or didn’t pass the initial screening upon arrival at the weyrs would be sent back to the Holds, along with any children found to be trained in a craft. With no side completely satisfied, the Summit retired and the dragonriders were left to return to their weyrs and begin the extensive process of rebuilding. 3020-3023 Dealing with the AftermathIn the next few turns the northern weyr Inverness was set up in a mountainous region in the center of the continent. The reorganization was not without its tensions. Longstanding enemies were now forced to interact with each other on a daily basis. There were also many riders who openly displayed their discontent with the bans placed on them by the Summit. Nevertheless, the turns passed with few no more than minor disturbances. There are still mutterings of discontent, and with the Weyrleader Trials drawing ever closer, the question remains on almost every mind: How long can things remain tranquil?
New Selenitas Weyr Formerly known as Burimyu Weyr Written by Ember Founding of Burimyu Weyr: 3015Burimyu was discovered - or perhaps rediscovered would be more apt - by Iskierka of Blue Ioth. A hidden, long abandoned Weyr in the mountains south-east of Blossom was perfect for the needs of a group of exiles from the recently captured Selenitas Weyr. A ragtag group of Selenitas' elites, senior weyrlings, and a few weyrfolk, their only hope of ever reclaiming their home rested with Meira and her gold, Jingth, to repopulate the new weyr. Under the united leadership of the Burimyu Council - Meira of Gold Jingth, Ka'rys of Bronze Ciceroth, and E'rro of Brown Ismaroth - Burimyu Weyr kept its secrecy. Struggling for Survival and Hope Lost: 3016Burimyu Weyr's struggle to ensure enough supplies for the weyr's demand culminated in the Council deciding to raid a tithe train meant for Selenitas Weyr. They executed a succesful, undetected raid on a train from Lighttower Hold. Finally they had the supplies they so desperately needed. There was, however, a heavy cost to those tithes. The Wasteland-ruled Selenitas Weyr increased patrols and made it increasingly difficult to Search Candidates for Jingth's future clutch. Burimyu Weyr felt the effects of Selenitas Weyr's increased watchfulness at the Hyphen Gather later that turn. The Hyphen Gather was meant to be a joyous occasion even for the Burimians - a chance to reconnect with those they had left behind at Selenitas Weyr and gather even more supplies. Things took a disastrous turn for Burimyu Weyr when one of its Councilmen, Ka'rys of Ciceroth, was killed in a surprise attack during the Gather. Some were lost while others managed to escape Wasteland once again. Despite still being in mourning over their fallen leader they elected S'rei of Bronze Salenth to the Council. Low morale did not last long after the Gather. Jingth, Burimyu's only queen, rose to mate. Just as hope was beginning to be reignited it was permanently snatched away from the exiles when the previously untouched records room at Burimyu Weyr was opened. Under the supervision of Councilwoman Meira a small group examined the trashed room. A hidden entrance to another part of the weyr was revealed when unknown creatures snatched Burimyu's only goldrider and fatally wounded her. The records room was sealed and put under guard while the weyr reeled from the knowledge that their only queen would between once her clutch hatched. Darya of Blue Azrath was elected following the death of their second founding Council member. Jingth's clutch hatched a small but strong clutch of nine and the gold did indeed follow after Meira. The hatchlings helped soften the blow of the goldpair's death but did little to restore Burimyu Weyr's hope of ever reclaiming Selenitas Weyr. Burimyu Reborn as New Selenitas: 3017They further despaired when a supplies once again dwindled and were forced to raid a Southern tithe train for this time they were discovered by Selenitesian patrols. One rider pair was killed in the struggle and several others were injured. Things looked all too grim for Burimyu until the great earthquake that destroyed Selenitas Weyr. Burimyu saw Selenitas' vulnerability and lack of Hatching Sands for the egg-heavy Millieth as an opportunity. When Burimyu offered aid the two weyrs merged together. The Council was expanded to include K'ian of Bronze Romeoth and Eikane of Gold Eikask and the weyr became New Selenitas. Everything is Better Together...Right?: 3018Tension was rife throughout the weyr towards the end of the previous turn but between Millieth's clutch hatching safely and the passage of time 3018 was ushered in rather peacefully. Until, of course, the monsters that killed Meira made a reappearance in the jungle around New Selenitas. They killed a wher pair before a couple were taken down. The animals were autopsied to discover more about what lived just out of sight in their own home. At the same time wherhandlers kept the weyr safe from monsters, the Council chose to join Benden's side in the war before their secret location became revealed. They sent Iskierka and Elysia to propose the idea to J'lorin with him agreeing to host Selenitas riders under Benden's colours in order to train against Fort tactics. The Great War: 3019Having joined Benden for a few months, the allied weyrs were ready to make their assault on Fort Weyr. While Benden launched the initial attack, Selenitas flanked their mutual enemy. A small force made up of Legatus and Benden elites led by M'gnum of bronze Higginth invaded the defensively weak Fort Weyr on foot and killed the Fort Weyrleader R'anatar of bronze Wereth. Leaderless and overwhelmed, the Fort riders either surrendered or formed smaller renegade groups that took most of the rest of the turn to hunt down. Nine months after Fort's initial defeat the renegades were taken care of and the end of the Dragon War was official. Formation of the Global Summit: 3020Following the war, Selentias Weyr sent their Council members to the Summit to decide the future of Pern. The decisions they made to centralize power in a single Weyrleader again and limit the powers of the dragonriders meant three things to Selenitas Weyr. The first was that S'rei of bronze Salenth was once again their Weyrleader. The second was that their population was reshuffled with the result that many left Selentias Weyr and many others joined it. Lastly, candidates would henceforth be tithed to the weyr rather than Searched and should they fail to Impress they would return to their Holds. The Summit's decision was not fully satisfying for anyone but Selenitas Weyr abided by it. Peace At Last: 3020-3023 Selenitas Weyr had its fair share of dissent among its occupants but the long desired peace was not broken. They may not have thrived, exactly, but in the turns since the Summit's decision people have settled down some. The undercurrents of tension that still existed and the fact that the Weyrleader Trials were upcoming meant that Selenitas Weyr was holding its breath to see what would happen after the relative lull after the end of the war.
Inverness Weyr History Written by Rei 3020 The Beginning of InvernessAfter the Dragon Wars ended and the summit rolled around the world of the dragonriders was turned a bit upside down. New restrictions aside, Fort and Benden were also to be left abandoned and a brand new weyr constructed. Though it seemed the best decision at the time the work needed to complete a brand new weyr was a daunting prospect. The positive side to this was it would give every able bodied dragonrider something to work on to keep their minds off the war. Scouts were sent out to look for a new location for the brand new weyr, ideally in a centralized location in the North. What the scouts found, in a mountain range a bit close to Telgar Hold, was a long dead volcano. The structure was massive and thick. Perfect for their purposes. Construction began as soon as the mountain was cleared as being safe and riders poured in from all over Pern to help in it’s construction. It was hard and busy work. Perfect for tempering any lingering negative feelings after the war. There were of course some altercations and tensions, but for the most part the work continued without much pause and within months Inverness was on it’s feet and operational at the very least. With the completion of Inverness came the parceling out of the riders that built it. Crafting riders, weyrfolk, and handlers were given their assignments first. Once they had all been assigned the remaining riders were all given their assignments and divided between Inverness and Selenitas. From that point on it was time to reap what the Summit had sown. 3021-3022 Tensions Run High, An Uneasy PeaceAdjusting to life in Inverness after the war was about as hard as adjusting to life in Selenitas after the war. With so many different weyrs mixed together for awhile tensions ran very high. Sworn enemy had become neighbor and a lot of riders who had been born and molded into the war as warriors were struggling to adjust to the new peace. Though there were of course some minor altercations that could not be avoided it seemed to be nothing that the Weyrleader Ce’thain of Sparath could not handle. The bronzer ruled his weyr firmly but fairly, proving that the summit had been correct in it’s decision to appoint him as interim Weyrleader. As the turns passed things seemed to calm to a slow simmer and though tensions were still high at times for the most part the weyr seemed to operate under relative peace. Thread was met and flamed and life began to fall back into patterns. The only point of contention being some of the Northern holds being more difficult to deal with. Bitra being a major one. CurrentInverness now runs as smoothly as can be expected as the date for the next Weyrleader trails looms ever closer. They big question on everyone’s mind? Will the peace last? And what will the trails bring to the table?
Inverness Weyr ClimateInverness weyr is built inside the cater of a large dead volcano in the very same massive mountain range in which Telgar weyr also was built. Being far North the climate in the area around the weyr is predominately very cold. However unlike the south the north seems to have four distinct seasons instead of just two. As can be expected the winters there are bitter cold and though it often snows in the surrounding areas, the weyr itself doesn’t get as much snow as one might expect. Probably because of the closeness of the surrounding mountains and how the weather patterns are arranged around them. Make no mistake, the weyr still gets it’s fair share of snow and ice but the majority of the really bad storms rage at much lower altitudes in the valleys surrounding the weyr. With spring comes the thaw and it is at this time where the surrounding areas are arguably the most dangerous. Mostly due to the massive snow melt the area has each year. The rivers, streams, and weyrbowl lake all swell to large sizes and rock and mud slides due to the softening ground are a little more common in the surrounding mountains. The temperature rises slowly but steadily and, though one might still need a jacket, spring is pleasant enough. After the majority of the thaw has passed it might even be described as beautiful given the amount of emerging plant and animal life in the area. Summers here rarely, if ever get too hot, and though they seem rather short it is arguably the most comfortable time of the year. The temperature rarely creeps over 85 (30) degrees and with the lakes, streams, and rivers having shrunken down from the snow melt it is the season where it is most comfortable to be outdoors and exploring. Most of the wild flowers in the mountains and valleys bloom at this time as well leaving the area fragrant and full of life. Most gathers in the north happen around this time due to the pleasant and stable temperatures. Autumn is arguably the most beautiful seasons in the north. Though the temperatures are starting to drop back down in preparation for the winter they are not so cold as to be uncomfortable. It is not the temperature but the change in the foliage around the area that is remarkable however. Most of the trees in the area, save the pines, are aflame with leaves of bright red, orange, and gold. The scenery at this time is well worth traveling to see and in fact many people do. Towards the end of the fall however one is advised not to travel too far out lest they become trapped in a sudden winter storm. The temperature in the weyrbowl tends to stay fairly constant depending on the weather outside. When the sun is shining the rocky areas of the weyr, especially the dragon ledges which are made of obsidian and absorb the sun’s rays, warm up very quickly. This allows dragons to bask even in the dead of winter as long as the sun is shining. All weyrs have two fireplaces for the cold weather, one in the main bedroom and the other in the large living area. The entrance from ledge to dragon area can be covered by a thick curtain of leather or hide to keep the elements out. The weyrs warm up quickly and it is fairly easy to regulate the temperatures as long as one keeps a fire lit. In the summer and spring the shadowed stone hallways remain a cool and pleasant temperature, although furs may still need to be used on the more chilly nights. LayoutAlthough it is not as large as New Selenitas/Burimyu, Inverness is nevertheless a large Weyr. The weyr exists inside the crater of a large dead volcano. The form of the weyr's living spaces is similar to that of any other weyr built in the north. In fact beside its newness there is little that distinguishes it from the rest of them. The rider weyrs are spaced evenly along the interior of the volcano, with the larger weyrs located on the east side near the hatching sands and the smaller weyrs on the west side near the weyrling barracks. Each weyr has a dragon ledge made of obsidian jutting out from each one. The largest of the weyrs could easily house a pair of dragons and their human family, but the weyr contains mostly the single units made for one dragon and rider pair. Accessible by weyrledge or staircase, stone couches, running water and private bathing rooms can be found in each weyr, along with any other furnishings its occupant may choose. Hallways and staircases connect the weyrs to each other and to the weyrbowl below. The Hatching Cavern is located atop a high, broad ledge accessible from the ground only via a long, winding staircase that steams from the craters bottom, the hatching sands mark the easternmost point of Inverness Weyr. The weyrling barracks are located low on the eastern side of the canyon next to the Hatching Cavern to make the trip from Cavern to barracks easy for the newly hatched and impressed. When a prospective dragon rider is brought to the Weyr, they take up residence in the Candidate barracks on the lower south side of the crater. Also on the south side of the weyr are the Kitchens, Great Hall, and Store rooms. On the western side of the crater lies the weyrfolk apartments, the crèche and the library. The ground entrance and exit to the weyr is one single tunnel wide enough for two bronzes to walk side by side though and it lies on the south side of the crater. A worn and winding road leads from the base of the mountain and up into the tunnel and the weyr. It is common for tithe caravans to be greeted by a blue or green rider at the base of the mountain and chaperoned up the road to the weyr, simply for safety reasons. On the rim of the volcanic weyr, one at each compass point, stands large stone obelisks where the watch dragons sit. Two watch dragons are on duty at all hours of the day and night. The dragons either perch on the north and south and east and west stones. The inside of the weyr is quite open and spacious, even if the walls are rather rough. The main parts of the weyr are all tastefully decorated and well-finished. And unlike the southern weyr the layout of this weyr is easy to memorize and even easier to navigate. The rider weyrs overlook the large weyrbowl with it’s sizeable lake, training grounds, feeding pens, and stables. The sunsets and sunrises over the edge of the crater are marvelous. The large lake nearly in the center of the bowl is fed by the rain and melted snow that runs from the mountains and down the crater’s side into the deep water filled depression. The water is rich in minerals from the surrounding rocks and is mildly salty making the water very buoyant. The temperature of the water is always pleasantly warm like bathwater because of the still lava flowing deep beneath the rock at the lake’s bottom. Steam can often be seen rising from the when the weather turns chilly. Lighting for the weyr comes in the form of glowbaskets which are hung throughout the weyr and changed frequently to keep their brightness. (Candidates and weyrlings are often given this chore) Also by fires which can be found in the many hearths about the weyr. Fires also blaze often in the weyrbowl itself, in the form of fire pits that are used for both recreational purposes and food preparation.
Inverness Wings The Inverness Wings are subdivided for greater flexibility; while full wings fly together, as a single unit that answers primarily to the Wingleader, during Threadfall, the wings are often divided into two parts, one operating under the Wingleader and the other beneath the Wingsecond, in all other circumstances, so that sweeprider and watch shifts are organized by half-wings.
Wingriders that serve under a Wingsecond’s half-wing are encouraged to bring any concerns or questions to the Wingsecond.
Wingseconds are required to run, from start to finish, one drill a week.
