((Takes place about a threeday after the Hatching. I has permission for Danar reference. <3))
The world was slow to return to Pasine, after having been away for so long. The first signs that she was coming to were the vague feeling of gravity. It was so… heavy. It sealed her eyelids shut and she couldn’t seem to muster enough strength to open them. That was the second sense: she began to feel her body. But it too was weighed down by gravity, and so Pasine was forced to wait as her mind pieced itself back together. The process was painstakingly slow, most likely hampered by pain-killing drugs of some sort, and by the time her eyelids finally flickered open she was still struggling to put together complete sentences.
Though Pasine’s lifeless grey eyes wandered the room extensively, she couldn’t make out more than a few details. It was white, she noted, and quiet. A few people-shaped beings moved around the room sluggishly as if time were in slow motion. She was eating… no, there was only a strong metallic taste in her mouth. After a while of floating in that timeless veracity, the Candidate gathered enough of herself to attempt leaving her stiff cot.
Pasine attempted to heave herself to her feet, but two things stopped her. First, her midsection felt uncomfortably stiff and wet. Second, the sudden movement had made her head swim disturbingly. The room swung out of focus, and she felt increasingly nauseous. The Candidate lay back on the pillow for a few minutes as she was forced to regain all her senses all over again.
Shards. What on Pern had happened? The last thing Pasine remembered was going to the Hatching. It had been about halfway through, and a few greens and browns had already impressed. And there was one blue… it stuck out in her memory… why? For some reason, thinking about the pale blue dragonet made her incredibly uneasy. Had she impressed only to lose the dragon? No, no… there was something else… the color red.
Pasine suddenly twisted to the side and emptied what little contents of her stomach she had onto Danar rather violently.
Jays. Had he been there the entire time? He looked like he had been sleeping, slumped over onto the side of her bed and drooling slightly, but she doubted he’d stay that way for long. Pasine rose a limp hand to her mouth, which still had hints of a metallic taste, and wiped away the excess puke as she struggled to get her mind moving again.
But what was he doing sleeping in the infirmary anyway? He hadn’t gotten mauled too, had he? No, no, then he would need his own bed. But what about Impression? Had he become D’nar, or D’ar, or D’an or whatever? Pasine tried vainly to ignore dulled shoots of pain that originated from her midsection, putting off trying to asses the damage. She dared not to look under the sheets quite yet.

Danar was dreaming peacefully when he was awoken by a horrid smell. He raised his head and blinked a few times before realizing that his hair was wet. He reached up a hand and touched the liquid bringing it before his face. Was that vomit? Shards it was. The candidate turned to Pasine and his eyes widened. “You’re awake! Are you ok can I get you anything? Water, I bet you want water.” He hastily stood and made his way over to the water pitcher pausing only long enough to grab a towel for his head.
His hands shook as he poured her a glass. He handed it to her helping her cup it before moving over to a basin of clean water. The boy wet the towel and began mopping sick out of his hair. “Shells I guess I should be glad you didn’t have much left to vomit.” Danar risked a haphazard smile in her direction. He was sure this was all very confusing to her right now.

"Thank you," Shmee told the healer kindly, bouncing Shei on her hip. The little babe just had a quick check-up, and Shei clearly didn't like it at all, for she was wailing up a storm. "Shei, lovey, can you smile for Mommy?" Shmee cooed to the babe desperately. She wanted to stop by the mauled candidate on her way out, to see how she was faring, but if Shei was bawling like this, she doubted she would be able to. Arlo, wanting to help his bonded, also nuzzled the babe. Still, this didn't satisfy the young red-head, who simply continued with her crying. "Shhh," she murmured, bouncing the girl. "Hey, do you have a sweetball or something I can give Shei?" she asked the healer quickly. The healer nodded, and quickly fished out a large sweetball from a stash kept in the drawers for weyrbrats like Shei. Holding it out to Shei like an olive branch, the toddler quickly took it, sucking it greedily. At least it stopped the crying.
Mumbling a quick thanks to the healer, Shmee left her part of the infirmary to head back toward the area where Pasine was. She hoped she was all right after the Hatching... She had done whatever was needed of her that the healers needed. Even though she didn't know the girl that well, she felt responsible for her, since it had been at Aslath's Hatching that it happened. Walking toward the cot where the girl lay, she looked briefly from her to the boy, who had a towel on his head. She blinked, taken aback for a moment. This was the boy who wouldn't back off down on the Hatching Sands. She resisted the urge to smile. It looked like this girl had a boy chasing after her. That was an amusing thought.
"Hello," the woman said quietly, coming to stand at the end of the cot. "How are you feeling?" she asked, a concerned expression crossing over her face. Unable to help herself, her eyes flickered to where Pasine's stomach was, as if she could see through the furs that blocked her view. Shells, she felt terrible for that... "You mind if I join you?" she asked, remembering that it was considered rude to just barge in on someone in the infirmary.
Shei tilted her head curiously, the tear stains on her plump cheeks drying now as she sucked at the sweetball. New people weren't her favorite things, but maybe she would get more things to suck on if she were good. Nervously, Shei reached for Arlo's tail, grabbing a hold of it for comfort. Tenderly, he nuzzled her and let out a quiet hum. It was rare for him to make noise, so even Shmee was taken aback. However, it comforted the babe, who rested her fiery head on her mother's shoulder.

Pasine nodded in reply to Danar’s question, but was already to the pitcher on the other side of the room. Hopefully the water would get this horrid iron taste out of her mouth. Plus, she was parched. She accepted the glass slowly, not sure if her hands could grasp the weight of the full cup quite yet. But they did, despite how lethargic she felt overall, and the Candidate found herself staring down at the liquid. The last time she had looked at a glass like this had been right before the Hatching, hadn’t it…? Hopefully she didn’t spill this time.
“Danar…” Pasine began. Began. Where was she supposed to begin? So many questions buzzed around in her head and her memories were fuzzy at best. The last thing she remembered after the horrible, horrible mauling was Danar returning from what she had assumed been Impressing. After that, things were just unintelligible blurs of red and green.
She watched the Candidate towel his head off, glad that he didn’t seem to mind being her bucket as much as she might have if the roles were reversed. “You missed a spot,” Pasine murmured, pointing out a small glob just above his ear. The perfectionist in her strained to go clean it off for him, but her bondage kept her bedridden for now.
After he had made himself tolerable, Pasine began slowly with the questions in the order that she had thought them. “So… why are you here?” She hadn’t meant to say it in a mean way, but perhaps her current state had made it seem so. But she was truly curious as to why the assumed-Weyrling was hanging out in the Infirmary instead of feeding his newly bonded. Either she was curious, or she was in denial.
Then Shmee and Shei showed up! Pasine almost half expected the other healer woman she remembered to pop up out of the blue as well. But the Weyrwoman spoke without interruption, asking a few general queries that the patient answered blandly enough to fit her mood. “I am… alive,” she stated, shifting uncomfortably under her furs as she felt a stray glance graze her stomach, “No, not at all.” Honestly, the Weyrwoman asking for permission. Besides, it wasn’t like Pasine was going to jump out of bed and push her out of the little area around her cot. Danar might though, after having seen how he had persistently stuck up to the Weyrleader on the Sands, so she threw him a glance to make sure he remained civilized this time ‘round.
“I’m surprised you were able to get here so quickly after the Hatching,” Pasine stated generally, pushed for making some sort of small-talk. After all, she had not blacked out for more than a couple minutes, right? And Shmee still had Shei from the Hatching (crazy Weyrwoman). The only thing that had changed was the slimy wrappings around her wounds that she now attributed to the earlier wet and still feeling.

Danar turned his head at Pasine’s voice , then she fell silent and he waited for her to continue not wishing to push her. After all she had just woken up from a terrible mauling. He absentmindedly followed Pasine’s directions as to the location of more vomit and gave her a tentative smile. “Thanks your quite a good shot by the way. I am going to need to take a bath later anyway or they may well kick me out of here.” The lad strode back over to the bed and sat just as the weyrwoman entered.
The candidate turned around and gave her a slight smile before turning back to his injured friend just in time to catch her question. “I am here because I have no wish to be anywhere else.” he stated with a shrug. As Shmee began speaking he feel silent raising his eye brows as Pasine shot him a warning look. What was that for? He had no reason to be rude unless she asked him to leave and frankly he doubted she would.

Shmee chuckled a little. Well, that reply was... optimistic. Being alive was being better than dead, right? Honestly, though, if Shmee were in that girl's position, she'd probably be whining, so she had to applaud the girl for being such a trooper. Nodding at her words, she pulled up a chair, and promptly sat in it, settling Shei onto her lap. The girl, not the least perturbed by the sudden change of scenery, snuggled up to Shmee as she sucked on her sweetball. Arlo, his work done, stopped his humming, but let Shei continue to hold onto his tail. He knew that it was a bad idea to try taking his tail away while she was in such an unpredictable mood. Knowing Shei, she would probably start crying again if he dared challenge her. Fortunately, he was content to remain as he was. He quickly gave Shmee a loving nuzzle, but Shmee said nothing as she looked curiously over at Pasine. Shard it, she couldn't remember the girl's name!
Fortunately, the girl's question thoroughly distracted Shmee. She frowned. So quickly after the Hatching? It had been a whole threeday since the Hatching had taken place... Pasine must've not have woken up until recently. She raised her eyebrows. "It's been three days since the Hatching took place," she said quietly. She hoped the girl wouldn't be too disappointed when she realized she had been left Standing-- or lying on the Sands, as it were. Injury had been added to the insult of not Impressing, but she knew there would be hope. How many times had this girl stood? Well, she didn't know, honestly-- maybe she had even stood for Hatchings her whole life!-- but she had the rest of her life ahead of her. And there were Hatchings about every two turns, so there was always hope. "Was this the first time you woke up?" she asked, trying to distract the girl from those thoughts, if they had crossed her mind at all. "How are you feeling from it?" She hoped it wasn't too bad. Losing consciousness for days didn't sound like fun at all.
Alarmed, Shmee chanced a glance back at the boy. She grimaced. So, that was where the smell came from. "I don't think they'll kick you out due to smell," she told him drolly, bouncing Shei absently. "Infirmaries are full of stench and sickness all the time. If they kicked out someone who smell bad, this place would be one empty infirmary." And Shmee knew that, from experience. She had worked in the infirmary for over a sevenday, caring for S'rei when he had collapsed. She was aware of the many... exotic smells that came from this place.
"What's your name again?" she asked Pasine lightly, figuring she had nothing to be ashamed of. The Weyr was a big place, and she couldn't possibly remember everyone, after all.

“Three days!?” Pasine squeaked, covering her mouth in surprise at the noise that she had produced. She hadn’t though she had been hurt that badly! The loss of time pestered her for a silent minute as she let her brain digest the new information. “I had no idea…” she trailed off, completely forgetting to give her name. (If the Weyrleader had been stalking her, shouldn’t she know it by now? Besides, her chart was around here somewhere. If Shmee actually wanted to know then she could sneak a peek at that.) Again, had Danar been there the entire time?
Pasine did catch Danar’s eyebrows raise and she couldn’t help but get an overall feeling that that was probably what she looked like most of the time. If it didn't hurt, she might've laughed. Instead she threw him an apologetic glance. She was so out of it, she didn’t know what to expect anymore. Letting a little sigh escape, the patient finally lifted the glass to her lips and took a long, deep sip. The water was extremely refreshing and she downed almost the entirety of it. The sigh she heaved now was a relieved one and she the glass back onto her lap w—waitaminute. Where was her other breast?
Pasine stated down at her uneven chest, shocked and a little scared that it had taken her this long to notice. A quick peep under the covers soothed her somewhat, but she was still panicing. Though her boob hadn’t been entirely chopped off by the dragonet, it had been slashed in the attack. It was hard to tell with it being bound to a size smaller than it already had been reduced to, but Pasine was pretty sure there would be a very noticeable difference between the two once it healed. Faranth, the scars might even be lumpy.
That was the straw that broke the camel’s back. Pain, hormonal boys, not Impressing, stalking Weyrleaders: she could just barely handle these with by telling herself they would all eventually go away. But these scars were something that she’d have to deal with for the rest of her life, no matter what came and went in it, and she was only realizing this just now.
It was at this time the waterworks came. Silent tears began streaming down her face, wiped away with the back of a hand only to have her nose spout in the meantime. Her sobs were suppressed even as she was letting it all out lest she irritate her wounds again, but she compensated for it by reaching out for the nearest hold and clinging to it. In this instance, the nearest hold just happened to be Danar’s slightly puke-stained tunic.

Danar’s features twisted into a concerned frown as Pasine reacted to the information that she had been basically comatose for three days. It had to be distressing for her. He carefully slid past the Weyrwoman to again stand at Pasine’s side hoping that perhaps his presence would lend some comfort. He had caught her apologetic glance and gave a slight smile in return, no harm done.
The candidate caught her panicked look and a momentary expression of confusion registered on his face. What was she upset about? The question was answered quickly however when he caught her glancing beneath her coverings. Ah she must not have been aware of the extent of her injuries. The boy opened his mouth to try to comfort her and immediately shut it in surprise as she reached out and clutched at his shirt tears rolling down her face.
“Pasine. It’s ok. Your going to be ok.” The candidate spoke in a soothing tone, picking up a handkerchief from the bedside table and beginning to gently wipe the tears from her face. He was at a loss as to what to say so he went for what he hoped was a comforting gesture instead. Besides actions spoke louder than words right? That was what his mother had said.
Danar desperately wished he could have taken her place. Why hadn’t the evil blue come at him instead? Pasine did not deserve this. He fought to retain his composer. The vile creature should never have been allowed to impress. He was probably a danger to everyone in the weyr.

Shmee nodded slowly. The girl hadn't provided her name, but she wouldn't bring it up again until the shock had worn off. "Yes, three days," she replied uneasily. Poor lass. To be mauled by a dragon, rejected by the rest of the clutch, and then three days in the infirmary without even realizing it... Shards, she felt terrible for the girl. She looked down for a moment, a hint of the pity she felt. When she looked back up, the girl was staring down at her chest. Shmee frowned. The injuries the girl has sustained had stricken that area, yes, but why that look? Chancing a glance down, she tried not to have her face look surprised as she saw one was a little smaller than the other. However, probably a little surprise had shown through, but Shmee instantaneously told herself that it was just the bandages, compressing the girl's chest tightly. That calmed her. The poor girl had been through enough without losing a part of her femininity!
...And now the girl was crying? Shmee's lips thinned. Her mothering instincts threatened to spill over again. She ground her teeth. Watching helplessly as the girl latched onto the boy, her gaze softened. Did she like this boy? She found it sweet how he reacted, giving her a handkerchief and acting cutely awkward. Shei, meanwhile, had finished her sweetball, and looked up at Pasine in alarm. She didn't like the girl to cry! Anxiously, the babe began to wriggle. "Ma, no!" Shei said insistently. "No no no." Shmee raised an eyebrow, then slowly set Shei on the ground. Immediately, Shei pulled herself away and darted over to the crying girl.
"No, no, no!" Shei whimpered, her own little blue eyes beginning to fill with tears. The babe grabbed onto the furs firmly. "No, no."
Shmee raised one of her eyebrows, and slowly stood. "Shei, sweetheart, don't do that," she said gently, putting one of her hands in Shei's short red curls to try halting any sudden movements. Hesitantly, Shmee put her other hand on the top of Pasine's head, stroking her hair very lightly. "What's wrong, love?" she asked as soothingly as she could. Arlo, to try and keep Shei at bay while Shmee took the girl, picked himself off of his bonded's shoulder and fluttered down to cling to Shei's shirt. He nuzzled her plump tear-stained face lovingly. Still whimpering, Shei picked up Arlo not very gracefully, and wrapped her arms around him. Fortunately, being used to such acts, Arlo went with the flow. This was a relief; she had to remember to give the blue a treat later for helping her out with this one.

Was this a dream? Everything still had a surreal quality, but Pasine chalked that up to the pain-killers. What was what really made her question reality was her deflated breast. How could this happen? She had never head of this before. Limbs had been lost to Threadfighting, sure, but boobs were not limbs and Hatchlings were not Thread! It felt like apart of her femininity had been torn at, but at the same time was being exaggerated all at once. Pasine was overwhelmed by incomprehension at the feat and could not control
Thankfully Danar allowed her to cling to him, but instead of being the oversized teddy bear that she was expecting him to become, he began mothering her and wiping away her tears. Pasine found the gesture to be both comforting and annoying at the same time. It was shockingly sweet that he cared, especially since she’d never had a male concern for her like this before, but at the same time the motherly gesture felt wrong coming from a man. Was he trying to be her mother? Ugh, too many emotions at once! The Candidate was force to calm down and try to get some sort of expressive bearings before she drove herself off of the deep end.
Of course, her well-wishes in the room helped Pasine get a grip as well. Danar’s words helped her more than his actions (in an ironic bit of reverse logic that perhaps only applied to Pasine and a few others), even though the damage control on the tears was appreciated. And as Shei ran over and tugged at her furs, Pasine was obliged to slow the flow for the sake of the child—and herself. A wailing Weyrbrat was not what she needed right now, as tender as it was to see the tot touched. Then Shmee herself came over and began stroking her knotted hair.
On a side note, Pasine would later wonder why no one had brushed it since the mauling. She supposed that it wasn’t apart of the Healer’s duties… but she honestly did not know. Well, hopefully they had at least washed the dragon spit out, for Shmee’s sake.
Getting back to the present, Pasine was struggling to find the right words to express the whirlwind of emotions inside. Better start simple, then. “It got me,” she began with a quivering voice, then stopped at how stupidly obvious she was being. No, she wasn’t dejected because she had been mauled. She was dejected because it had taken apart of something from her, part of her femininity, and it would take much time and effort to get it back. Again she tried, this time with a steadier tone. “It got…” She glanced at Shmee cautiously, but found no suggestion that she’d be angry with her foul language. “It got my breast! I’m lopsided, now.”
There was another pause as Pasine contemplated displaying her chest. She looked around, but most of her view was blocked by Danar, Shmee or Shei. Good, that meant they couldn’t see her. Quickly she let go of the covers that the babe had been tugging on only moments before, then snatched them and covered back up before she downright embarrassed herself to death. Now blushing she continued, “The bandage feels tight, but it shouldn’t be that small…”

Danar continued to wipe at Pasine’s tears until they subsided and his attention was drawn from the girl to the small child desperately trying to get Pasine to stop crying. The candidate bent down to be more at level with the girl. “Aren’t you a little sweetheart." He said in a light friendly tone. “My name is Danar little miss. Nice to meet you. The girl you are trying to cheer up is my best friend Pasine.” He paused and gave the girl a slight smile as the flitter flew down to cling to her shirt. “Thanks for your help. That’s a nice flitter you have there.” He refrained from reaching out to touch her not sure how the babe or the Weyrwoman would react and instead straightened back up catching Shmee’s question to Pasine.
He listened as Pasine began to speak and his eyes widened in shock as the girl made the problem known. She was missing a breast? Blasted, stupid, sharding hatchling! If it didn’t deserve a repercussion before it did now. Danar was at a loss as to what he could say but he thought something needed to be said lest she think he would abandon her for such a trivial thing. “Pasine,” He began and stopped to kneel down by her bedside so he was at eye level. “No matter what happens you are still the one I want to spend my time with. I like you for you. Your still…well…” He ran his hand through his messy slightly sticky hair “beautiful to me.” Shards he hoped she didn’t hit him or worse tell him she never wanted to see him again. He suddenly felt more than a little self conscious for Faranth’s sake did he really just say that in front of the Weyrwoman?

Shmee continued to run her fingers through Pasine's hair, not seeming to care how messy or dirty it might be. She did, however, try to straighten some of the knots out with her fingers. This was her zone; she loved taking care of people. She was very well used to it after taking care of S'rei, so this was nothing new. Gently loosening the girl's knots, she frowned. Was there a comb or something nearby? Well, she could always grab one from the closet, but she wouldn't leave her yet. When Pasine began to speak, Shmee slowly sat down on the cot beside her, careful not to touch her body. She didn't know how much of the girl was injured, but she wanted to look less intimidating by sitting down. "It got you?" she repeated quietly, trying to encourage her to confront whatever it was that was upsetting her. She kept her gaze on the girl extremely soft, and continued to rhythmically move her hands through her hair. Was it the attack that was upsetting her? Well, that could understandably upset anyone...
Shmee raised a warning eyebrow as the boy spoke to Shei, but fortunately, he seemed safe. She relaxed visibly as he called her "sweetheart." It also relieved her that he introduced to Shei their names. She took a mental note. The girl was Pasine, and the boy was Danar. Shei nodded seriously, her eyes still flowing with tears. She didn't understand everything the boy said, but she was sure things would be all right.
It was only when the girl-- Pasine-- finished her sentence that Shmee truly understood what had caused the pain. So. Pasine did lose a breast in that mauling. Shmee only caught a brief glimpse as she dropped her furs, getting full view of her breasts, one of them bandaged. She flushed a little, but she couldn't stop herself from comparing the sizes of the both breasts. She couldn't deny that the bandaged one was certainly smaller than the other. She frowned as Pasine lifted the furs to cover herself again. Poor girl. So Shmee's thoughts had turned out to be true on this one.
Shmee blinked as she watched Danar briefly-- albeit awkwardly-- pour out his soul to Pasine, and she couldn't help but smile. Young lovers, they had to be. It was very sweet. Tenderly, she planted a soft kiss in the girl's hair. "He's right, you know. People will like you for you, not your looks. There are so many people with disfigurements, but they're still loved. My weyrmate is covered in so many scars and he's very thin, but I think he's still the most handsome man I've ever seen. You may not look perfect, but everyone who matters will still consider you beautiful. Listen to Danar, he knows what he's talking about," she added, smiling a little. This boy was a sweetheart, it seemed-- Pasine had better tak note of that.
She paused her stroking of Pasine's hair for a moment. "Let me brush your hair out," she said suddenly, yet firmly. "Once again, healers never helped out the people part of their patients. You'll look absolutely beautiful again if I brush your hair out a bit," she said, smiling kindly. Curiously, Shei toddled closer to the cot, looking up at Danar with her eyes clearing. She loosened her grip on Arlo a little, and Shmee could hear a sigh from where the poor flitter could breathe again. "Yuh, nice," she said pleasantly to the boy. Looking back to Pasine, she smiled shyly. Her cheeks were already drying of their tears. "Yuh?"

Shei and Danar seemed to be making fast friends, and Pasine was extremely grateful. She really didn’t have the energy to keep up with a little one right now, but Danar had stepped up to the plate and apparently had good skills with a child. That was surprising. She had always assumed that men were near hopeless with children. Apparently she was learning something everyday, despite the circumstances.
Pasine was, for perhaps the first time in her life, speechless. No, she definitely wouldn’t hit him, nor would she shoo him away. Instead she stared openly at Danar, again failing to comprehend. Her mouth hung agape for a moment and her still watery eyes were widered then ever before. Shmee then broke the magical spell that suspended her, but Pasine was too busy suffocating Danar with love to fully grasp what she was saying.
Yes, her torso had sprung out of bed as bed as she could and she procceded to wrap her skinny little arms around his head, since that was what was at her level. She didn’t really care how sticky his head was, she just whispered into his ear with reckless abandon, “And I will always want to spend my time with you, with or without your bronze.”
Then, just as fast as the hug had happened, Pasine was back to her former position with an odd, good-humored grimace on her face. Her actions had predictably aggravated her wounds again and it was a strain not to grasp the wrappings, but it had been worth it. “Thank you,” she breathed three times, one to Danar, one to Shmee, and one conjoined for both Shei and Arlo.
The pain was subdued once more as Shmee stroked her hair and the painkillers took effect. “Oh, that feels very nice. If you want and they have any of my things nearby, there should be a black brush somewhere…” Pasine relaxed again, and turned to Shei’s nervous face. “He’s very nice,” she smiled not at the babe, one eyebrow perked, “What is his name?”

Danar was only vaguely aware that Shmee was talking. Whatever she had said or was saying was lost in the wave of warm loving feelings that washed through him at Pasine’s hug. Her whispered words made his eyes widen in surprised shock and when she again leaned back into the bed the shock had been replaced by a wide smile. She felt the same. Thank Faranth that was a huge weight from his shoulders. Now he just had to be careful to keep it that way. He had flirted with plenty of females but not one had held even a quarter of the attraction he felt for this girl.
He ran his hand through his hair as Shmee began to search for a brush and Pasine spoke to the Weyrwoman’s little girl. He smiled as the girl spoke to them both. She was a little sweetheart that was for sure. Shmee had done a good job with her. He vaguely wondered when the next gather would be. If he could make some marks by then he fully intended to get Pasine a gift. Or perhaps he could spend some time on the coast searching for a firelizard clutch he was sure she would love one of the charming creatures. Thoughts of gifts brought back the memory of the ring T’rid had taken and his failure to get it back.
Danar suddenly turned toward Shmee. ‘Um Weyrwoman may I speak to you in private for a moment? That is if you don’t mind Pasine. You see there is something I want to ask you about.” The large lad trailed off and waited for the woman’s answer. He was not sure if she had any power over T’rid but she should seeing how she was the most powerful person in the weyr.

Shmee hid a smile behind her hand. Pasine and Danar, she quickly decided, were a match made by Faranth. The way she hugged Danar was simply too sweet. Though she couldn't hear what Pasine whispered to him, Shmee was certain that whatever she was saying had to be a confession of love of sorts. Besides, what would have made her hug the boy so hard after words like that? No, Shmee was certain it was love, and it was sweet. But when Pasine got back down, her expression made it dawn on Shmee that the hug she just gave in must have been painful. Well, that was certainly dedication right there. She lowered her hand, pleased nonetheless. She waved a hand in dismissal as the girl murmured her thanks. For what? She hadn't done anything except come to check in on her. Besides, it was because of a dragon that hatched out of Aslath's clutch that she felt responsible for this.
Don't even try to pin the blame all me. That idiot blue got it all from his father,[/color] Aslath commented wryly. Shmee resisted the urge to laugh.
Nodding cheerfully, Shmee got up and wandered over to the bags. With a brief glance back at Shei, she began digging through them to find the black brush that Pasine had spoken of. As she did this, Shei's smile slowly made its way back to her little face. "Yeah," she said, growing more confident as Pasine was talking more, and about her mother's flitter. "Awwo," she explained, unable to pronounce the R and the L correctly. Shmee chuckled, but didn't correct her. She was proud that her daughter was able to get that much out. She wasn't able to say much yet, but she could say "Ma", "Da", "Sa", and "Awwo", the names of the people she knew (Except Aslath-- she couldn't figure out a name for the queen yet). Arlo flicked his tail in acknowledgement of his poorly butchered name. Shmee found the brush among Pasine's belongings, so she came back to the bed.
Humming a little, she sat back down on the cot, delving right into gently taming the knots in the girl's hair. The hair wasn't as clean as Shmee generally was a fan of, but it wasn't the girl's fault. She couldn't wash her hair while unconscious. "You have very nice hair," she said cheerfully. "Yeah!" Shei piped up enthusiastically, climbing up onto the cot and settling near Pasine's legs. Arlo took the opportunity to scramble off of Shei's back, and climbed up to curl up next to Pasine's thigh, making purring sounds as he nuzzled the girl. Shmee raised an eyebrow. "I can ask Shei to get down if you want," she told the girl hastily. She thought Shei would be fine, but she wanted to make sure the girl was comfortable first.
As she was brushing, the boy was suddenly speaking to her. Raising an eyebrow, she looked up, never pausing in her even strokes. Private? Was it about Pasine? Did this boy need love advice? She smiled brightly. "Absolutely!" she replied cheerfully. Stopping the brushing, she said, "Can you watch Shei for a moment? I'll leave Arlo here. But I don't think we'll be gone long?" she said, raising her voice for a question to make sure it wouldn't be too long. Arlo crooned softly, a rare sound for the blue to make, continuing to nuzzle the girl encouragingly.
