Why'd she get stuck with the worst chore? Boats, boat duty, while others got to sit around writing out scrolls and sweeping floors, avoiding people all together. Beka actually had to talk to them. Ugh, it was someone's cruel idea of punishment. If she ignored newcomers needing help, she would get scolded, if she was impolite, she'd get scolded, so really there was no way out of it.
Grumbling darkly to both green and brown flitter sitting on either of her shoulders, Beka bent to examine the boats. What'd she know about them any way? She couldn't tell a good boat from a bad one, other than really bad boats had leaks, and sunk. That was the extent of her knowledge, so it was probably a good idea that she'd just chosen to give the boats a clean. Check for any dirt and wash it off, an easy job really, tiring, but easy. "Anai, not so tight." Laughing softly as she loosened the green's tail while she ran the cloth along the boat, she rolled her eyes when Pita's tail merely tightened.
Over all, if anything, doing her chores with her flitts would make it interesting. Anai had developed a dislike to Pita, and the brown likewise, perhaps it was just their different personalities, once Anai had grown out of her baby stage, she'd been alot easier to handle, she did as she was told most of the time adn yet, Pita was the exact opposite. Sighing softly, she gently rubbed Anai's side before returnign to ehr work, ignoring the insulted nip on her ear from Pita.

((Mind if I join you?))
Leaving Raiyth asleep after a decent meal, Fiona made her way toward the river, not sure whether to be delighted or sad about her chore assignment. Being in the kitchens sounded like fun; there was always food to be had! And helping out in the weyr meant meeting more people. The archives sounded boring, with plenty of dust and dusty old books. Ho hum... no colors to be had there. With the boats she got to be outside, and she wondered if she couldn't perhaps find a wildflower or two to admire. Unlikely, but the thought made her smile. She did so love flowers.
Then again, she did not know a great deal about boats. She remembered that if they had holes, they leaked, which resulted in sinking and being forced to swim. Weren't they filled with pitch when they had holes? She couldn't remember. Hopefully, someone else would know to help her out, or else she would just have to feel stupid.
As she got close, she spied someone else present, a girl--with firelizards!--scrubbing away at the boats. Fiona tilted her curly-haired head to one side, smiling and trying to remember who it was. She came up with a mental blank and shrugged it off, jogging over to join the other weyrling. "Hi!" she said brightly, trying not to sound too cheerful about chores. "Do you mind if I help you? Your flitters are really pretty, by the way." She was unable to resist tacking on the last bit, simply because she loved the colorful little creatures.

Beka was very nearly frightened out of her skin by the voice, turning her head to face the green weyrling with a dark scowl that was echoed by Pita's furious hisses. How dare this thing scare his Minething. It was plain and simple rude it was Pita's job to be a pain, not hers. Beka glared at him next, before shrugging her shoulders at the girl's question.
"If you want." Why anyone would want to be stuck with such a horrible job she didn't know, but Beka wasn't going to turn away the chance to get it done quicker. Blinking in surprise at the comment on her flitts, Beka glanced at each in turn before smiling slightly, she thought so too. "Thanks. Anai is the green, Pita is brown.." Are you going to introduce yourself now? Thoth chuckled mentally, mental tone teasing as Beka sighed, she'd been trying to avoid that.
"I'm Beka by the way, of blue Thoth." Yes, just tack that on the end there, she had flitters and a dragon, how lucky was she, and now she was getting help with teh chores. Even better.

Oh dear... that had perhaps not been one of Fiona's most brilliant moves. She assumed a suitably apologetic face as the other weyrling turned to look at her, cringing and flushing a bit. She had even upset the poor flits; now she felt even worse! "I'm sorry... I didn't mean to startle you." She flicked the other girl a smile at the acceptance and moved to the next of the boats, snatching up a cloth to begin wiping down the dirt in the boat and inspect it for leaks. "I'm assigned to boat duty too, and I've really got no clue what I'm doing. I figure if I just single out which ones have leaks, then that's something," she confessed, tucking her short curly hair behind her ears and away from her face where it stayed for about half a second before springing right back into her face.
At the introduction, Fiona breathed a quiet sigh of relief. She hadn't completely stepped on toes, then. "I'm Fiona of green Raiyth. It's nice to meet you, Beka. You and your... friends," she said, nodding her head at the flits on the girl's shoulders. They were just so beautiful. She was a bit envious of the girl, though refused to let her hopes be dashed by previous failures. She would manage to get a little pretty thing to have as a friend to her and Raiyth. Perhaps it should be something male, though, to offset the female-laden imbalance already existing in their pitifully small family of two. Yes, a male would be good.
"Thoth? Then... you're one of the senior weyrlings?" Fiona guessed, scrubbing mercilessly at a stubborn dirt spot. Stupid... sharding... mud! At least, I hope it's mud. "I don't recognize you from lessons."

"You didn't startle me." There was no way she was going to admit she'd been frightened, she'd never admit that. No way, and- now Pita wouldn't shut up, ighing as she reached up to clamp a hand around his muzzle to warn him to be quiet, she shrugged, "It's fine," A pause, before she raised her eye brows, had the weyrling master managed to assume all the people who knew nothing of boats on the boat duty? Maybe he just assumed they'd know something about it, "I don't either. I'll just wipe them down. If it sinks while someone's in it then they'll have to swim."
She was a weyrling then? Juniour most likely since Beka didn't know her, and she at least knew the names of most of her fellow weyrlings. "Hm, nice to meet you." The words were muttered, with a cautious note as though Beka wasn't entirely sure it was nice to meet her, it would be better if someone else was with them, then Fiona wouldn't be as interested in her, and would bother them.
"Huh? Yeah, we're seniors. We did our first flights not long ago." A note of pride entered her voice here, along with the tenderness most got when speaking about their dragons, "You'd be a junior then? From the latest clutch?" Well obvviously she'd have Impressed at the latest clutch if she was a junior, but Beka wasn't good at conversations, talking was not her strong point.

The other girl did not seem to like her much at all, so Fiona took great care to tone down the cheerfulness she had previously been feeling. It would not do to frighten off the other weyrling within a few moments of meeting her. Making enemies was not on the young greenweyrling's agenda. She let the comments about the boats slide, eyeing the boat she was scrubbing for any signs of leaks. She didn't see any glaringly obvious holes, which was heartening.
At the mention of the first flights, she let out an envious moan. "You're so lucky. Raiyth and I--Raiyth, especially--can't wait to fly, and it seems like that's ages off." The thought of Raiyth made her smile, knowing that the mere mention of flying would be enough to send the little green into an excited jabbering fit for minutes on end. Fiona could hardly blame her.
"Mmhmmm... from the last clutch. Kind of a surprise. I wasn't really expecting to Impress at all. Hoping, though," she admitted, trying to brush her stubborn curls out of her face. She frowned a bit, looking at Pita. "Is he all right, or does he not like people...? I can go further away," she added, her voice a bit quieter now.

Had Beka known the other girl's thoughts, she certainly wouldn't have reassured her. She was right, Beka didn't like her all that much, but Beka didn't like anyone] all that much. Whether that person was nice or horrible- You like Calistoth's... And you like- Lura and Liralla, yes I know. Beka interrupted her dragon, scowling at the boat as though that alone would make it get clean faster.
Smiling slightly at the sound, she shrugged her shoulders, to a juniour it was a long way away, it had felt that way for Beka too. "You'll get there." What was this, a nice comment from Beka, in a tone that could be passed for encouragement? Had Pern stood on end? "It's good fun though. After the first moment where you're scared because there's nothing underneath you but your dragon. It's wonderful."
Another slightly smile, Beka's scowl softening as she remembered her shock and joy at Thoth's soft voice, "I know the feeling. Thoth was a shock, a good one, but I didn't expect him." He'd asked her if having green blood made him a girl.. Looking at Pita with a snort, the girl reached up, poking the brown with a finger so that he wobbled on her shoulder. "His name is Pain in the Arse for a reason. You don't have to move, he's just living up to his name."

Fiona may not have been among the most brilliant of Pern's minds, but the scowl that Beka was aiming at the boat surely was not limited to the dirty inanimate object. She had a feeling that she was not making a new friend at the moment, but she could hope, at least. "Thanks. I know it'll come, and I'm sort of nervous about it. I'm so excited, though. It sounds incredible, to be free of the ground and just soaring." The memories of watcing dragons soar overhead on patrol flashed through her mind, and she smiled lazily at the thought, remembering the flashes of color streaking by overhead. That would be them soon, her and Raiyth.
"Raiyth was the best surprise I could've asked for. She was so sweet and happy. My parents were furious, though." That was the understatement of the Turn, and it was one of the few dampening moments about coming to the weyr. Why were they not happy for her? It was not as if she was cut out to be a runnerhandler anyway.
Fiona stopped scrubbing, brows furrowing in an expression of mild confusion. Hadn't the other weyrling said that his name was 'Pita'? 'Pain in the...'... oh, she understood now, and she laughed softly, biting her lip to keep from laughing too hard and offending both weyrling and flits. "Oh. It makes sense, a little, now. Is he like that to everybody?"

R'lor whistled as he ambled over to the boats. He was a little late, but that didn't matter. Shifts overlapped a bit so at any one time there could be three or four people ready to ferry others across the river. This wasn't his favorite chore, but most people in Selenitas knew how to boat so usually there wasn't much to do. Sit there and talk with whomever was on shift. It worked for him. But some of the weyrlings were just plain dull.
You could be nice, Yiminth suggested from his perch. He had found a favorite cliff that he and His had begun to think of as their ledge. I'm always nice, R'lor retorted, even though that wasn't completely true. He was sarcastic every now and again, but he was usually just a joker. He wasn't malicious...though he could pull a mean practical joke every once in a while. You could be really really nice,[/i] the brown tried again. He loved His and he didn't want him to be bored or dislike any of his clutch siblings'. It just didn't seem like much fun.
"Hey girls," R'lor greeted as he drew closer, not replying to his dragon. He loved the big teddy bear. His little suggestions were the only things that R'lor would ever deem 'adorable.'[/size]

"It is. It's like you can leave your problems on the ground and leave them behind for a little while." She was actually starting to feel guilty, it wasn't Fiona's fault she wasn't social, there wasn't anything wrong with idle chatter, and the girl was being friendly enough. Glancing up at the mention of her parents, Beka actually look interested in the conversation, "Your parents were upset?" She asked, looking up from the boat and leaning against it. She'd never met anyone who's parents hadn't been completely supportive of the dragonriding life.
Glancing at Pita, she nodded, rolling her eyes. He was quite plainly living up to his name, even Anai didn't like him, she tolerated him. "Yeah, pretty much. He doesn't seem to like me all that much even." Glaring at the flitt, she was rewarded with the brown puffing up and glaring straight back. He was a nice little protector though, he was sweet on the rare occasion, "So no, you're not getting special treatment from him, I'm jsut surprised he hasn't tried to bite yet."
Glancing up at teh greeting, Beka managed a small smile, mentally asking Thoth for his name. Yiminth's. Was the only response, well wasn't that helpful? Not. "Hey, you know anything about boats? Cause I only know how to clean them."

Fiona's eyes fairly glowed at the thought, her head tilting to one side as she thought about it. A few dark curls fell across her vision, and she sighed, giving a mild smile of amusement as she pawed the incorrigible ringlets from her face. Beka's sudden interest in the chatter caught her attention, and the young woman shrugged slightly, looking a bit uncomfortable at the thought of her parents back at the hold. "My mother wanted all of her children to be good runnerhandlers like she and my father were. I was good with runners, but... I was a little too free-spirited for a daily schedule... which is interesting, since now I'm working on Raiyth's schedule." The mere thought made her laugh. It was irony, at its best. Raiyth, however, was intelligent. Runners were not.
She gave the brown flit an apologetic look. "Sorry for disturbing you, Pita." The thought of the flit not even liking his bonded was surprising. "I thought all firelizards liked their people, though I wouldn't know. Maybe he's just grumpy," she chuckled softly, remembering a cranky old man from her childhood. The similarity was entertaining.
The greeting startled her, and she turned to smile at the newcomer. His skin was dark, darker than she had seen before. She guessed he was a weyrling. Were any candidates assigned to boat duty? She doubted it. "Hello. As she said, we're both a little clueless here. It'd be helpful if they'd /show/ us what to do," she said, wrinkling her nose as she spied a rather dangerous-looking spot on the boat she was cleaning. Was that mold? Disgusting!
