Lesson 10: Classroom: Terrain Recognition Test and Special Training Training Field: Emergency Fall Procedures Drills; Begin Formation Flying; Chain & Toss in the Air
Lauranna swung off the desk, landing lightly on her feet and bouncing a couple of times, just for good measure. She grinned brightly at the scribbling students. "All right! Pens down! The test is over. I'm sure you all did wonderfully, but anyone with less than full marks will get a special session with me before we go Betweening so we all come out the other side, so it's a win-win! That's only about two months away. Time flies, no?" Bustling about, she collected papers, tossing them onto the desk and clapping her hands. "So, now we get to move on. It's been ten months, so you're all free to enjoy a little intimacy again. I'm not going to bore you with the same old thing. We all know why still having your virginity is bad, so, especially if you ride green, get to it! Dragons should begin rising within the next two months. Exciting, isn't it? If you have any questions on that, you may see me privately - or F'rah, if you're male and would prefer a male. Okay? Okay!"
The greenrider stalked before her desk, hands behind her back, studiously contemplating the tests on the terrain around Selenitas Weyr as if she were grading them right then and there...when Reysalth issued the bombshell. Threadfall drill! Dragons, alert your riders! Anyone not in full straps, with the appropriate firestone attached to the harness, before LaurieMine has me ready will be drilling it over and over until they can get it up to speed after lessons! Lauranna flashed a grin around the classroom, straightening, waiting to see who would get the message first. All the jackets and helmets and goggles had been stacked at the back of the room when they came in, the straps left in neat piles near where the dragons milled outside, with a massive heap of firestone and empty bags - just to make things interesting and be sure people still knew what size firestones they needed to be looking for.
The woman didn't bother to hurry, walking sedately toward the door and shrugging on her jacket as she did so. Just as calmly, she wound her braid around her head, tugged on her helmet, made sure her goggles were in place, and began pulling on her gloves. A glance back at any stragglers, and she smiled wryly. "You're already behind..." With that, she broke into a light trot, making for Reysalth who had stationed herself farthest from the barracks door. Not hurrying, but certainly not dallying, she caught up the carefully oiled straps as she jogged, throwing them over a shoulder, then paused. Lauranna surveyed the hurrying weyrlings with a tiny smile, then set about preparing Reysalth with a steady surety.
The greenrider carefully timed her movements so as to give everyone the time they needed, as she'd been doing this for over ten turns and there was no doubt that in a flat-out race, with such a small green, none of the weyrlings would stand a chance. Lauranna tugged on a strap snuggly, making sure the cinch held. You should be about finished with the riding straps. LaurieMine is now moving toward the firestone. Indeed she was. A couple bags later, the Weyrlingmaster nodded to Reysalth, having secured the last bag to the green's harness. Time!

Did well at the test? T'nmor glanced down unsurely, nonetheless putting aside the pen, as well as his worries, at least for the moment. While he personally had nothing against Lauranna, the mere idea of having extra lessons was motivation enough to try his hardest. It was over, though, which meant that the much more appealing portion of the lesson was about to begin. Weyrlingmaster Lauranna's speach took a much different turn, though and T'nmor looked away pointedly, fighting down a brilliant flush at the mere thought of dragons Rising and Chasing, especially what that entailed. He would make it a point of not talking to anyone, for it would no doubt be one of the most uncomfortable experiences in his life and he would rather not discuss it at all.
You should at least ask some questions, Jedirth said innocently into the back of his rider's mind, somehow taking perverse pleasure in T'nmor's discomfort. It is as the Weyrlingmistress stated: having your virginity is bad. I do intend to Chase, you know, and I would feel much better about it if you were to be at least a bit experienced, so you aren't traumatized. While it sounded nice enough and Jedirth was using a kind tone, T'nmor couldn't help but feel that he was being strung along, somehow, and silently vowed to not heed his bronze's direction. Well, at least for the moment. There was obviously sense in what he said, but T'nmor didn't exactly feel inclined to request tips on losing one's virginity and how to go about such an ordeal.
The bronze twitched slightly at the sudden call from Reysalth, twisting into full consciousness. T'nmorMine, there is a call for riders and dragons to strap up. An emergency Threadfall drill, they say. And make sure there is firestone attached to the harness as well, he added, pausing to make sure that was everything. I am waiting outside, he finished, slowly clambering to his feet from where he lay. T'nmor was already scrambling to his feet as well, though with a good deal less grace, nearly knocking over the desk in the process. He forced himself to pause, gathering his wits and calming his frayed nerves, before moving towards the back of the classroom, where their riding gear lay in carefully sorted piles. He plucked up his apparel, pulling it on as smoothly as possible, snapping his goggles into place with a note of finality. He was glad to notice that he wasn't the last one to do so, and began to move towards the door, feeling Jedirth's excitement already buzzing through his nerves.
There was a fair bit of firestone stacked outside, though T'nmor chose to equip Jedirth with the proper straps first. The bronze was a good deal better at moving his body to comply with his rider's wishes, twisting here and there so that T'nmor could secure the straps and put them into place. It didn't take long, though the pair knew that they were hardly the swiftest, though hopeful that, with age, they would grow quicker. T'nmor dropped spryly from one of the straps, knees bending to absorb his fall as he jogged back towards the waiting firestone and sacks. A variety of sizes were piled together and T'nmor took a few more moments to pick out the appropriate ones, shoving them hastily into bags before scampering back towards Jedirth, reaching his side just as Reysalth announced "Time!"
Jedirth rustled his wings softly, head tilting to stare down at His. See, Mine? We are getting better. We finished in time, though we could have done it a little faster. Still, we did well, the bronze stated smoothly, prancing in place slightly, his tail flicking back and forth. Now that they were ready he was eager to begin, his slowly whirling blue-green eyes fixed intently on Reysalth and Lauranna. Hurry, T'nmorMine, he added as T'nmor hauled himself into the proper seat after checking the bags once more. Grinning, he also turned to watch their teachers, brushing his fingers along the side of Jedirth's neck as he did.

At the announcement of 'pens down!', Fiona was torn between relief and a little bit of nervousness. She had not done poorly, and most of the necessary information had popped right into her head. She had been studying, if only out of a desperate wish to not be left behind. Being left behind meant lots more lessons and lot less... well... fun things. Granted, flying Threadfall was not fun, but doing tests all her life was not high on Fiona's list. She could be serious... when she had to be, about the things she needed to be. But, really, the curly-haired greenweyrling preferred to just... be her normal, enthusiastic, affectionate self. And speaking of affection....
A delighted little blush worked its way up the teen's neck at the mention of intimacy. It took all of her will to keep from bouncing right out of her seat, but doing well in lessons took precedence over momentary enthusiasm. The enthusiasm... it passed fairly quickly, if only because there was no prospect of quick cuddles in the future. Fiona loved to touch and cuddle; she was just that breed of creature. Granted, she would never force it on anyone who was wholly unwilling, beyond a touch to the shoulder or arm, but she still wanted to cuddle. Her gaze slid sideways to the bronzeweyrling in the next seat. T'nmor. She knew him... sort of. By face, anyway, and she was bemused by the fact that he looked away. A virgin, hmm? She offered him a brilliant smile... a silent offer. He was cute. She would help him with that... problem.
Oooh, it was a good thing he wasn't a greenrider!
After making a mental note to find some nice male to get intimate with in practice for Raiyth's maiden flight, the young woman jumped as Raiyth cheerfully passed along the message that they were to get ready for Threadfall drills. Drills? DRILLS! The teacher was already on the move, and Fiona practically leaped out of her seat to follow. She made sure to not jostle anyone in the rush to grab up the gear, and even as she squeezed out the door and toward the riding straps, she stayed well clear of the others. Raiyth was emphasizing speed, but Fiona pulled her gear on with careful gestures, not wanting to tangle herself up in her haste. She did do that on occasion.
Once she had the straps, though, her fleeting thoughts of intimacy, sexing, and nude cuddlings were all thrown out the window as she adjusted the straps on her green's neck. Raiyth had been wriggling with impatience, but a semi-stern look from Hers had the green settling and just waiting, tolerating the adjustment of gear and tack. The dragon so wanted to fly! Oh, but now was the occasion for seriousness, she noted, as FiHers seemed very intent on everything being well taken care of. Threadfall drills? Serious, yes. That meant fire and burny silver things... and no playtime. Nope, playtime and fun flying time would have to wait. If it was possible, Raiyth stilled even further, in an effort to aid the efforts of preparation.
The snug fitting of the straps was soon enough to Fiona's liking, and she cast a glance at the weyrlingmaster. Oh, good! The woman was not done yet, so her time management skills were not so off as to put her abominably behind. She loped at an easy pace toward the firestone just as Reysalth commented that the teacher was heading for it as well. Shardit. Well, Raiyth did not need as much firestone, not being fully grown, but Lauranna knew much better what she was doing. Fiona snagged a few of the smaller sized bags, worrying her lower lip as she quickly filled them with manageable pieces. Not too big... so as to choke her dear Raiyth. Not too small so as to be... well, useless. Yes, those would do!
Her dark eyes brightened as she got back to Raiyth in a reasonable amount of time and hooked up the bags. There! It still needed some work, this whole process, but it was better than it had been. At least she could contain her giddiness enough to be serious and to hook up the straps properly without tying herself into knots. That had been an interesting one to work with. She happily rubbed her green's neck, dropping a kiss to the tip of the green snout that turned to nuzzle at her. We're magnificent, dear. We need work, but we're getting there! It's getting better! We are, we are! But our time is up now, so we must sit and wait and listen. Raiyth responded in kind, her backside wriggling in a small gesture of her excitement.
The bronzepair near them was all ready to go, the boy even up on his dragon's neck and everything. Were they supposed to be up? Fi was unsure, though Raiyth helpfully stuck out her leg in case the girl did need to get up. Fiona was too busy watching their teachers, though, her doe-brown eyes wide and curious, watching. Up, up, and away, she hoped?

Janisi bit her lip and eyed her test nervously but set her pen down with relief anyway. She didn’t think she’d done badly, at any rate she’d answered all the questions and certainly hoped she’d done well. She did want to fly between and she definitely wanted to come out again and where she was supposed to go, so she had been studying for this test. Even so she gave it another worried glance before returning her attention to the lesson.
Janisi looked down to hide the blush she knew was forming at the mention of…intimacy, or rather intimacy as it pertained to her personally. Other people being intimate was no real problem. Janisi bit her lip again and frowned, she supposed, since Storith was undeniably green, that she should, ah, do as everyone recommended and discard her virginity, though the thought of approaching anyone on that matter made her cheeks flame. For a brief mad moment she wondered if the weyrlingmaster might have any advice on that matter. Probably not, Lauranna didn’t look like she’d ever had trouble approaching anyone.
Threadfall drill! Storith blasted through her rider’s thoughts. We must be ready when Reysalth and hers are or we have to stay and practice until be can be. The green added. Janisi had already leapt up like her behind was on fire, stuffing her helmet on and tucking bits of loose hair in and making sure her goggles were on before dashing out the door while wrestling with her jacket and snatching up her straps with the first hand she managed to get free.
Storith was prancing impatiently from foot to foot but settled as soon as she saw Janisi, anxious not to be staying after the lesson. The green obligingly moved to assist her chosen as Janisi got the straps on and fastened, checking the fit almost absentmindedly. Janisi nodded to herself as she tugged various straps, then dashed off for firestone.
This was a test too, she noted as she grabbed up pieces of firestone for her sacks, someone wanted to see if they knew what size firestone pieces they would need. Janisi worked as fast as she could, digging through her part of the heap for bits that weren’t too big for Storith to chew easily while still being big enough to make a decent flame from. She trotted back to Storith with a sack in each hand and hooked them up with a bit of determination. She had no time to check they were secure as she would have liked though as Reysalth called time.
Janisi stood beside her dragon awaiting her next insrustion and attempting to get her breath back.

Lesson 10: Classroom: Terrain Recognition Test and Special Training Training Field: Emergency Fall Procedures Drills; Begin Formation Flying; Chain & Toss in the Air
Reysalth stretched her neck and wings, preening a little as she regarded all the weyrlings. Most everyone had made it on time! Rumbling her pleasure, the female settled herself once again. Laurie nodded to her, since they had an ear-deaf dragon in their midst. Good job! Much, much better than when we started. Soon you will all be nearly as fast as the wingriders. Reysalth pranced a little in place. She was now addressing riders and dragons, as it was easiest that way, since their second little test had been passed successfully. Prepare to take to the air if you haven't already. Mini-wings again, just like last time. If you've forgotten already, Jedirth's wing has Raiyth and Linoth. Russeth's has Fortith and Storith. Sitieth's... She finished naming them off, waiting for each of the wings to get situated.
Today we're going to try a little formation flying! Sound like fun? Of course. Two wings at a time. LaurieMine and I will go up with you and help direct. Remember currents and air streams? The goal is to time your flight to match the others in your wing. Laurie had gained Reysalth's back by this time, strapping herself in firmly. The green rose into the air vertically with a strong sweep of her wings, gliding nimbly upwards. Jedirth's wing first. Then Russeth's. Lead them up here, just twenty feet below where I'm hovering. Try to keep your formations as you come up. No need to hurry.
The green maintained her altitude, waiting and directing the dragons as they rose. Not so fast, Russeth. You're leaving Fortith and Storith behind. Raiyth. Don't crowd Jedirth so much. You're practically on his tail! Soon both wings were below her, waiting on her instructions. Let's fly toward the ocean a little ways. If you're not sure of the direction, it's the way the river's headed. Reysalth began the migration, starting slow and then picking up speed as she grew satisfied that everyone seemed to have gotten the hang of their spacing.
Now we're going to try a turn, the green stated after a minute. Fortith! Wait on Russeth! This is a wing turn, not an 'everyone turn when you please' turn. Everyone, remember how we practiced on the ground? All turn left, in place. Right. Good. Now, the ends of the wings still hover, and the points will go between them and start leading again. If Raiyth and Linoth are too close together, Jedirth, don't try to squeeze past them like that. See how Linoth is having trouble staying in one place? Go a little higher if you have to, or tell them to widen their spacing a little more. Reysalth waited until all was well, then began leading them back toward the weyrling barracks and the weyrlings still on the ground.
We're going to fly past them and turn again when we're further upriver, to make sure everyone understands, then you can land and watch the other wings.

T'nmor allowed his gaze to slide around, watching the others out of the corner of his eye. He had caught the glances cast at him by Fiona earlier, despite his best attempts not to. He couldn't deny that she was an attractive woman, of course, but he wasn't exactly interested in such matters - much. While having relations was allowed now that the dragons were mature enough to Chase, T'nmor was more than a bit...hesitant on that front. Why should he immerse himself in a relationship when there was still plenty to do? He doubted that Jedirth would Chase anytime in the immediate future, despite the bronze's vehement suggestions that he would, but he supposed that it would be good to get some...practice. He wasn't about to ask anyone for help, of course, and refused to even tell Jedirth that he was willing to even attempt any such manuevers.
Forcing his thoughts back to the matter at hand, T'nmor cast a quick glance around to see how the others were faring. Fiona had yet to mount Raiyth, no doubt waiting for permission, and T'nmor felt a twinge of guilt for going ahead and doing it himself. Maybe he should have waited as well, though he chose to blame this excitement instead. Janisi didn't mount Storith either, and T'nmor almost began to slide out of the saddle, intent on placing himself down at the level of the others, though Reysalth had already begun to speak. He quickly secured himself into position once again, Jedirth straightening intently as he listened to the directions, head tilting towards those who were named as their wingmates.
So they didn't have Fortith and L'ron. That was a great relief, though T'nmor couldn't help but feel a twinge of uneasiness mixed in with the relief. They would quite definitely have an easier time, not having to deal with any insubordination from the bluepair, though those two would also be out of range. Of course, there was a senior weyrmember present, boith o fwhom would hopefully deal with Fortith if the vicious blue attempted anything out of the ordinary. Still, anything that happened badly would be on their heads, T'nmor decided, casting a final uneasy glance in their direction before facing Reysalth and Laurie, putting on the eager face that he seemed to be using more and more often.
Is everyone ready? Jedirth announced to His and his mini-wing, allowing his mindspeech to bleed into the heads of both dragons and riders alike. He turned his head slowly skyward with a final glance back, muscles rippling beneath his coppery hide in preparation of the leap. Upon receiving confirmation, he leapt upward sharply, wings flaring and beating slowly, half-twisting to glance over his shoulder to make sure that everyone was following. Careful to keep pace with them, Jedirth began to lead them tentatively towards the air below Reysalth, listening to her instructions all the while, T'nmor occasionally twisting in his seat to glance behind him at the others, relaying any extra information directly to Jedirth.
After what seemed an eternity, they were all positioned below Reysalth, wings beating slowly, hovering in place. Upon hearing further directions, both turned their gaze towards the designated area, Jedirth's tail flicking in confirmation as he noted the visual. With a few quicker beats of his wings, Jedirth swept after Reysalth, careful to keep pace with her and attempting to pay as much attention to his wing as possible. Their slow pace began to gradually speed up, at least until their Weyrlingmistresses requested a turn. Forcing himself to slow, Jedirth began to obey, wings dipping to carry his flight to the left. His chest puffed with pride as his mini-wing followed in synch, keeping their places wonderfully. But now for something different. As Raiyth and Linoth hovered, Jedirth flipped back, intent on going between them. He pulled his wings in a bit before Reysalth sought to adjust his mistake. Raiyth, pull slightly to the right, Linoth, to the left. I'll pull up slightly higher, he stated crisply, an extra wingbeat carrying him slightly higher until he was in perfect position to fly through unhindered.
And then they were flying back. Jedirth followed willingly, feeling a bit exulted for how well his mini-wing had flown, and eager to attempt something a bit more complex in the future. It would be much more interesting with a complete wing, of course, and much more difficult as well. Practice made perfect, after all, and that was just what the bronzepair intended to do - practice until they fell out of the skies from sheer exhaustion. Jedirth cast a quick glance back at the two following him, lips twitching in a draconic smile. Good job, all of you. Are you prepared for another attempt? he said, unable to hide the eagerness in his voice.

Well, they were supposed to mount up, Fiona supposed. She used Raiyth's foreleg and practically leaped up onto the green's neck, taking care to properly strap herself in and get herself situated. Falling was not deadly, but hitting the ground was. And hitting the ground would make everything go from fun to bad very, very quickly, so she took an extra few seconds just to make sure. This greenrider would not be falling off and hitting the ground, no sir! T'nmor looked like he was about to hop down, and then Reysalth started giving instructions. She took a moment to wink at the bronzeweyrling. So cute. He was not responding yet, but she would get there. They had plenty of time after the lesson to... talk. Yes, talking was good.
Both green and rider were delighted to hear that they were in the nearer of the bronzepair's little mini-wing... and away from the scary blue, no less! Raiyth lowered her forelegs to the ground and executed a few short hop-steps to get to her position behind and to the left of Jedirth, crooning quietly to both of the other pairs. The arch of her neck and bright blue whirling of her eyes hinted at how eager the green was to get airborne. She loved the air and loved to fly, though she was obviously waiting for orders. Reysalth was in charge, and Jedirth was in charge. Thus, the green had to wait. If her tail wriggled once in her enthusiasm... it was understandable.
At Jedirth's query, Raiyth responded with an enthusiastic affirmative and crouched, prepared to leap. Fiona similarly made the hand gesture for affirmative. Did she need to? Probably not, but it was good to get practice right? And considering how things tended to float right through her brain on occasion... practice was very good! Upon getting permission, Raiyth's body uncoiled and leapt for the sky, her overlong wings beating enthusiastically as she aimed for the sky. Unfortunately, her enthusiasm had her crowding too close to Jedirth, and she snorted at that realization. Reysalth's remonstration had her radiating an apology, and Fiona helped her rein back her enthusiasm and slow her ascent until she kept pace with Linoth, behind their marvelous wingleader.
Fiona was so delighted to be airborne and kept a good hold on the straps, making sure to look around and assist Raiyth when she was lagging or--as it happened more often--crowding too close. They managed to get up to the proper height and hover properly without further serious incident, and the curly-haired young woman looked over and up toward Reysalth, awaiting instructions. The ocean? She urged Raiyth on, and they followed Reysalth--or Jedirth, more specifically--along at the initially slow pace. As they sped up, Raiyth responded enthusiastically to match their pace. Between Fiona's frequent looking-around and Raiyth's continual watch on the bronze tail ahead of her, they managed to keep going. No collisions... no incidents. Success!
Oh, a turn. This would be interesting. Remember, turn around in unison with the others... and then we hover to let Jedirth get past us, okay? Fiona reminded her dragon, to which Raiyth offered a quiet snort as she began slowed her forward momentum and angled her wings, to turn to the left. Fiona kept her eyes open as well, and they managed to stay in place, to both females' great delight. Then Raiyth opened her wings to their full extent and beat them slowly in an attempt to hover, making sure to keep an appropriate distance from her green wingmate. At Jedirth's request--command, really, which made Raiyth wonder where she had erred--she slipped a bit to the left and then waited, waited for him to get through.
They were flying back along the river now, and then they would turn again, Reysalth had said. Landing so soon?! Raiyth was disappointed, but she could scarcely complain about this flying time. Hers was disappointed too, but Fiona was in serious-flying-mode now. Raiyth had to sober up as well, and the green made her mood match, carefully making sure to keep her place behind Jedirth. She saw the bronze look back, and she crooned softly, eyes whirling a tad faster at his query. Myself and Mine are very prepared to try again, though I think I will need more practice with not going straight up so fast. We should practice outside of lessons sometime, shouldn't we? What do you think, Linoth? the green replied happily, tilting her head lightly to include Linoth in the conversation as well. Oh, but this was so exciting!
