Impressing Wymeth had been the most amazing thing ever to happen to her... but learning that she was excused from chores to do her duties as the WeyrDrummer was a near second. A happy smile flitted across Vashti's face as she finished polishing the brass face of the great drum used to boom important messages for all. The secondary drums had all been tended to, those which sent specialized messages only in the direction of specific Holds. I can help, yes? Wymeth asked sleepily, finally waking up from her nap.
Vashti laughed, a rare occasion which was becoming more common. The sound was surprisingly light and airy, rather than forced as such an unlikely sound should be. Wymeth fluted and poked her lovely green nose in, bouncing the short distance across the drum tower to where Hers was polishing. Here, Wymeth, Vashti said, pinning the cloth up on two corners with her fingers. You rub this across the metal to make it shine brightly, the young woman explained. Wymeth pressed her nose against the proffered cloth and pressed, rubbing with great vigor, though not great skill.
Like this? the dragon asked, before sneezing, sending the cloth flying across the room. Vashti snatched it from the air and wiped off the last bit of mess. It smells funny, Telti-love, Wymeth complained. Vashti snorted.
"I figured as much," she snorted. "But you wanted to try..." Wymeth snarled at Vashti.
Do not dare to trick me again, Vashti! the dragon cried, sparked into anger at Vashti's nonchalance. The drummer stared at her dragon in consternation, surprised at the fury coming off of her sweet Wymeth. That is mean and you are not supposed to be mean to me! A drum message started to boom across the river valley, but Vashti ignored it for the moment.
"I'm sorry, Wymeth," she said in consternation. "I didn't mean to harm you, I just wanted to let you try." The green dragon snorted, then shook her head, clearing the red from her eyes.
Don't do it again, Telti, she sighed.
I promise, Vashti replied mentally, running over to the pad of paper and sketching in the drumbeats rumbling on their second repetition. A message, from Selenitas Hold to Blossom Hold. She quickly finished her beat markings, then drummed out the received message to Selenitas. The drumbeats stilled as she assured Wymeth she was still paying attention to her, then began beating out the message to Blossom. Boring work, perhaps, but better than Candidate chores.
