Tropicals - FINAL LESSON

((Allrighty. Just as a reminder – and I know there are so few of us here, so it’s hard – but right now Museh wants three posts from y’all a lesson. ‘Y’all’ will probably just be Kysseh and Kisha right now, so there’s no need to wait on anyone else. Okies? Okies. Sorry it’s such a small group.))

Lesson 14:
Classroom: Easy day, no class!
Training Field: Run Obstacle Course

When the weyrlings began filing into the classroom for the very last time Lauranna was beaming broadly. Yes, she had a weyrmate and a brother in the infirmary. Yes, she was taking care of a toddler and an infant – both of which had been left at the crèche as they had to be every day when she was directing lessons. But today was the last day for the Tropical weyrlings as a weyrling class, and she was ecstatic. Every last one of them had done fabulously! Her first weyrling class would soon be graduating. Okay, so she hadn’t started with them, but they were still hers!

The greenrider had even dispensed with her more practical clothing for something colorful and – well, yes, flirty. But she was happy! “Hello lovelies! Today is our very, very last day for class. You’ll still be weyrlings for a little under a month while the wingleaders decide where to put you, but you’re practically riders now! So today I’m not going to give any lectures, and it’s mostly going to be a fun day. How does that sound?”

Glancing around, she quickly ticked off attendance for the last time, then vaulted off her desk and hurried up the center aisle so she was standing in the midst of all her pupils. “I’ve got a couple people still finishing setting up the little obstacle course cooked up for you guys, sort of as an end game, so now’s the time to ask any questions that have been on your mind before they finish up. Does anyone have any? Any at all? Or we can just talk about something that interests you.”

Lauranna glanced around eagerly.

If her teacher was beaming, then Fi was practically aglow with energy and enthusiasm. The cheerful young woman was not walking, not strolling, not meandering. No, she was practically prancing down the aisle, mindful to not trod on anyone's feet as she filed into the classroom with her fellow weyrlings. The seat was not a desirable place to plant her little rump, but... well, she supposed she could force herself to sit long enough to focus, but she did not want to. Oh, she knew she was on to danger and exercises and drills and such, but she was allowed a little exuberance every now and then, wasn't she? There was no need for restraint!

Yet.

Did she have questions? She didn't know, but the young woman did bounce quite a bit in her seat. The assistant weyrlingmaster's enthusiasm was infectious, and Fi was nearly running a fever from it. She was in serious danger of falling from her seat with the amount of bouncing, but it slowed as the weyrlingmaster approached. Dignity had to be maintained, to a point, so fidgeting had to be minimal when the woman in charge was near. But, ohhhh, how Fi wanted to go fly with her Raiyth! Wait... obstacle course? No lectures?! There was an almost irresistible urge to throw her hands into the air and scream with delight and cheer, but no... no. Calm was good. Calm was very, very good.

"Ooh... err... I have a question." Fi was full of questions, and it never failed to amuse her how few queries her classmates tended to put forth. There were always more answers to be had, and she wanted them all! Going between for good by accident was not a tempting proposition. It was always good to know where one was going, indeed. "How... err... do they pick us for wings? Do they just kind of pick at random, or.... well, I just don't know. Is it like... a test?" If it was a test, she was dead, dead, dead, she thought mournfully. The greenweyrling and her bonded were... competent, but they had to work hard to get things right. If they were tested, she was rather afraid that none of the wingleaders would want them. They weren't behind, no, but they were not the class stars. The thought of this had her visibly deflated, her bouncing halting to near nothing. Oh... shards. So much for fun.
