(NOTE: I will give everyone two days to respond to this before I post again.)
Today was a big day for the weyrlings. He’d told them about it this morning in the classroom, but until they were all gathered out on the training field and he was able to further brief them on the dangers of /betweening/. Oh sure, they had probably heard from the other riders, but the knowledge wouldn’t truly sink in until they were preparing for their first jump, hoping that their coordinates were good enough, hoping that they wouldn’t find themselves lost /between/ forever, suffering a cold and painful death. He shook his head to banish the thoughts from his mind. This class was bright on the whole. They would figure it out well enough. Hopefully well enough that no one would be lost /between/.
“Listen up everyone. This is a big day, but don’t allow nervousness to overtake you. You’ll need to be calm and collected if you ever expect to /between/ properly. Earlier in your lessons you should have practiced sending images to your dragon and vice versa. We’ll start with that.” He pointed toward the starstone, indicating it was to be their first target. “Picture the stone clearly in your mind. Every detail must be precise. Once you’ve done that, send the image to your dragon, who will then send it to Morendoth. We’ll verify that the image is good and then we’ll move onto the next step.”
Clearing his throat, the weyrlingmaster stepped back, allowing the weyrlings to complete the first task. He’d started with something simple, hoping to ease them into this. He’d rather not push them too fast and have one of them slip up and make a fatal mistake. This was the hardest lesson he’d taught so far. I’fael wondered if this lesson would ever be easy to teach. He didn’t think so.
