His eyes scanned the sea of faces before him, his mind recognizing none of the weyrlings that were there for their own graduation. The room was loud as everyone mingled together, offering congratulations to those graduating. It seemed as though everyone from Selenitas had shown up to watch, filling the room from wall to wall. He was nervous, though he had long since learned to hide any indication of it. Being old had its perks. I’fael sighed, his fingers combing through his hair restlessly as he waited a few minutes longer for everyone to enter the room. He scanned the crowd again, looking to see if he could spot F’rah. He had sent an invitation to the man, though the healers had told him that it would depend on the condition of F’rah’s health on that day. Lauranna should be somewhere nearby as well. She had, after all, been the one to lead the majority of the lessons for this group. Doubtless she would arrive at any moment.
The crowd was growing restless, alerting I’fael to the fact that it was almost time for the ceremony to begin. Clearing his throat, he stepped up to the podium, glancing out across the room one last time before speaking. “Attention everyone. The Passing Ceremony will begin shortly. I’d like everyone to take their appropriate seats now please. Thank you.” With that, he stepped back, taking a deep breath. Not too much longer and then the senior weyrlings would officially become riders for Selenitas.
Mentally the weyrlingmaster ran through what he was to say in his mind. A short beginning speech by him and then Laurie and then they would begin calling names and handing out the scrolls. All in all, it wouldn’t take too long. This graduating class was rather small. Waiting for this ceremony to start looked as though it might be the hardest part. I’fael never was one for large crowds. He watched the weyrlings avidly, waiting for both Senior and Junior weyrlings to take their seats, which would mark the beginning of the graduation.
