Kalina walked into the kitchen and grimaced. What could possibly make that smell? After a few hours of turning baskets and doing a little sweeping she had been hoping to catch a snack. Something had to be amiss though for food to smell so....burnt.
Some one was frantically trying to save something that had been cooking too long. The mess of meat was overcooked and with things in the Weyr being as they are...well...wasted food is never good. She walked over to the cook and asked, "Want another hand?" He looked at her and for a moment didn't recognize her.
"Oh...you're the one who was frying tuber slices aren't you? Have any ideas for this?" He gestured at the mess before him. Kalina looked at it. Most of it look salvageable. "Maybe... do we have another pot to put it in?" He nodded and had a helper bring to him.
"How about we let these simmer in a beef broth for a while? It looks like its already falling apart. Simmer it till the broth thickens and put it in a roll with some cheese...." He thought about it for a moment.
"I guess a big pot of baked beans would go good with that. You have crazier ideas than an expectant mother... sound good though."
So Kalina didn't get her snack till after she got everything in the new pot and set it over the cook fire. As she was watching it simmer a brown flitter popped in over her head. Landing gently, he curled his neck in what was supposed to be a handsome pose...
"Mikhail...what are you doing here? You know the kitchen staff aren't happy with you." The brown swirled his eyes in mild impatience. I can not help the judgment of simpler minds. He crooned thoughtfully as he eyed her snack.
If she had known that flitters could be so high minded she probably would have been more cautious about getting one. It had only been a month ago when he decided to hatch. The little brown always thought he had an intelligent mind. From the beginning Kalina drilled him words to keep him occupied. Now days she wondered if something else would have been better. So...share food yes? Should share...after all...you picked me. Kalina couldn't help but smile anyways...she didlike him...even if he tried to learn fancy words and phrases and use them. So she handed him a piece of meat roll.
He snapped it up and eyed her hand like it food would magically appear for him. Chuckling, she handed him another bite. Patience is a bitter plant that produces sweet fruit.
"You don't eve like fruit." She eyed him suspiciously.
Not my fault. You taught me.
Suddenly Kalina noticed that the cook was staring. "Get out of here before those simpler minds of yours put a knife through your neck!" She hissed quietly at him. The brown flitter didn't wait for a second invitation and flew out. A clean house is a sign of a broken computer! Kalina stared at the door he flew out of as the cook walked up to her.
"What, by the First Egg, is a computer?"
Kalina looked at him. "I have no idea."
