Danar hummed as he added this and that to the stew pot. The smell coming for the pot was probably enough to turn anyone’s stomach but Danar ignored it. Or rather, probably didn’t notice. The candidate was to busy thinking about the upcoming clutch. The touching would be any day now and after that came the hatching. The day the little dragons inside the shell picked their soul mates and partners in life.
Hero fluttered here and there about the hall. Mainly begging for little tidbits, but if anyone looked like they needed assistance he was happy to lend a hand. The flit had already gained the drudges approval by ridding the storeroom of rodents and tunnel snakes alike. They had sung his praises and lavished attention on him and the bronze, although not the vain sort, had quite enjoyed it.
Danar had a sneaking suspicion that he was kept around solely for his useful fire lizard. Winging about the room Hero buzzed by Mer and gave a trill before winging around to circle his bonded. What was his doing? That smelled horrible. The flit gave a sneeze as he hovered and Danar blinked before turning toward his pet. “What’s up Hero? You finally full you little glutton? At least you’ll never get fat. You move to much for that you big pig.”
The bronze chirped in annoyance before winging off on some other great adventure. Silly creature.

Merridan waved amiably at Hero with her good hand, her left was in a sling. She was in good spirits, despite everything. M'ta and Kale were on the mend and even little Jabari was getting back to his old self. R'wign might be getting better too, though it was hard to tell when he worked himself to death. Even more heartening was the fact that Millieth's clutch was now hardening on the sands. The day of the hatching was drawing ever closer.
Mer leaned over Danar's shoulder and sniffed at his pot of stew. She wrinkled her nose in disgust. "Is that supposed to be food or fertilizer?" she asked jokingly. In truth, Danar was probably doing better than she could have anyway. Meroh was probably the best cook of her family, having learned from their mother before she passed. Ever since he had married and moved to a place of his own, the food at Mer's house resembled Danar's attempt more often than not. At least his food might be edible, even if it tasted bad. Mer turned and busied herself stacking bowls to serve the stew when it was ready.

Danar frowned at Merridan’s words. “What do you mean fertilizer?” Taking a sniff himself Danar wrinkled his nose in disgust. “Yeah never mind I get it now. Well look on the bright side, most of the weyr is so drugged up they probably won’t taste it anyway.” The candidate gave Mer a slight smile. “I don’t remember seeing you around before. You new?”
It was a poor attempt on conversation but shard it Danar was bored. With nothing going on in life but chores, chores, and more chores. Anything to get his mind off of the state of the weyr was welcome. “I mean I assume you are a candidate. I just don’t remember seeing you around the barracks.”
Hero whirled around and landed close to Mer. Striding over he eyes the bowls and gave a hopeful chirp. Dinner was soon yes? Danar chucked and waved the flit off. The bronze gave a unhappy trill and leapt of the countertop, blinking between once he got into open air. “Really they should have left me to bathing dragons. I’m a horrible cook.” Really it was the truth Danar hadn’t cooked a day in his life. Well not until this very hour anyway. Some drudge had showed him to a stew pot and left various ingredients out. With no instructions given Danar had improvised. With disastrous results apparently.

Mer smiled at Hero as she replied to Danar. "Uh huh," she confirmed. "I arrived just in time for this mess." She waved vagued before grabbing another bowl. She was pretty sure she didn't have to elaborate. Shards, but her father would throw a fit once he heard. "I can't stand being cope up, so I don't spend much time in the barracks." She brought the bowls over to Danar and set them down on the table next to the hearth.
She sniffed again and chuckled. "Better you than me," she said seriously. "Unless you like charred wherry bones for breakfast." She held out a hand to the boy with a friendly smile. "I'm Mer. Sorry I didn't catch your name."
