Kalina looked out into the brewing winter storm with dreams of more pleasant days. The climate was not right for snow this far south...but it was cold. She pulled on another shirt...missing the warmth of summer. She was restless, being cooped up inside was not fun and never would be. The fact that she simply itched to go outside and roam was only compounded by Uminth's restlessness. Kalina looked at her bonded with a cautious eye. She knew it was inevitable but had not been able to bring herself to prepare...hoping that Uminth wouldn't have the desire to rise in dead of winter. Her green, her precious little...err...not so little green was positively glowing. Kalina had been oiling her often recently too with the unusual cold and dryness.
For the past few days Uminth had been literally sucking the marrow from herdbeasts bones. To Kalina it was a strange desire but Uminth was literally boiling with pent up energy from her light meals and daily marrow devouring. With the weather being so cold Kalina had let Uminth have a few thick femurs at her weyr...providing the bones disappeared. Uminth had happily complied.
Uminth was licking restlessly at the last bone today in restless determination. Her tail twitched back and forth as she lay there. Her glowing hide was brighter than ever, even in the weak light from the cloudy skies. It seemed Uminth had taken the place of the sun.
"I'm bored." Kalina said as she plopped down on her furs for the fifth time. Uminth looked up at her with eyes sparkling. A low stuttered growling sounded through the weyr that Kalina recognized as chuckling...sort of. Kalina glanced at Uminth. What? ....oh please do-
Oh but I will...you don't have anything better to do. Can't you feel it? My blood runs hot...too hot for any winter to cool. The urge to fly, to move, to be out above the clouds themselves. Uminth stood and stretched, growling in agitated need to move. You feel it too...you are restless. You need to move....to run, leap and FLY!
Kalina could feel the desire to do just that run through her. The desire to be chased, to out fly even the best...because she was the best. If she stayed still any longer she would burn. She had to move...to release all the energy thats been there for days. She needed release!
Coiled muscles sprang free as Uminth leaped into the strong winter wind. The wind would prove challenging to flier and Uminth reveled in it. She didn't work extra hard at flying to be a clumsy mule in the air....no....her practice had payed off as she flew up into the sky. calling challenge to the males that would pursue her.
~~~
Kalina was stock still for several seconds as the emotions rolled off her bonded into her through their link. Flight, lust, desire, strength, beauty...it was all hers. She struggled, she didn't feel ready...but her body said otherwise. Her mind reeled as she tried to hold the emotions in check...suddenly letting go she felt herself go into a deep link with Uminth...she was Uminth. Uminth the green. Uminth who did not fear what her body told her and accepted it eagerly. This is easierwas Kalina's last solo thought as her feet exploded her towards the flight rooms. Her heart pumping and adrenaline rushing....adding to her pleasure of the run.
Flight. Straight flying was not a common thing for T'san. He was much more used to the quick hop between to get anywhere. Going to Selenitas Weyr, however, required him to fly from the most southernly place he could think of. It was odd but also somehow very relaxing after a while. Dsoleth rumbled agreement as he flew, steady wingbeats marking their pace to their new weyr. Little did either of them know what was waiting for them. A challenging cry in the distance alerted Dsoleth. He knew that type of cry! T'san caught his dragon's thoughts and groaned slightly. Are you serious? We just get to a new weyr and you already find a green to chase? There was good natured amusement mixed with annoyance in the brownrider's mindspeech.
Hopefully when they got there Dsoleth would have the decency to drop him somewhere before Chasing the green. The striped brown did...but the manner left a lot to be desired. Desire. He felt the emotion flooding him, making his hands clumsy and slow. Off. Hurry! "I know, I know. Don't suppose you know where I should be going, huh?" The brown snorted with impatience as he waited for his rider to get off. The very moment he was free of his rider he lept into the air with an adoring croon. T'san watched the brown, still bearing his harness, rise into the air before the emotion swept him up into the air too.
Where was his green? His beautiful, glowing green? T'san growled impatience at the halls that led him anywhere but to his green. He would find her. He must! She must be somewhere. Would she try to hide from him? Another throaty growl as his feet led him down the stairs. Running. He heard running! Looking around he spotted a running figure of utmost beauty. She was absolutely gorgeous. Oh, surely this must be his green? He watched her elegant run a little longer before chasing her through the halls. He'd run after her forever if he had to!
Dsoleth crooned as he rose after the beautiful (and young) green. Weyrling? Hopefully she wouldn't be afraid of him. So much he could teach her! The winter winds buffeted him and he snorted. Like this puny weather would stop him. He realized with surprise that this gorgeous little beauty and him were alone in the skies still. Well Dsoleth could make up for that. Surely he was a fine brown! Large for his colour and strong. Though not fast he could and would outlast any pursuers for this lovely green. He basked in her presence as he would in the light of the sun. How beautiful and glorious she was! He'd fly all around Pern for her! Flight.
Kaaoloth twitched restlessly from his perch on the weyrledge. “I would prefer it if you stayed away from my weyrling’s Kaaoloth.” Uminth will rise. I will chase. Sel’n growled in agitation. “I already got one sharding green rider pregnant Kaaoloth. I do not want to impregnate one of my students. Chase Ebolath when she goes up. You should only have to wait a few more days. Raylin is already pregnant. Kalina isn’t” I do not want Ebolath. “Why Uminth?” However the brown was not listening for at that moment his glowing green had leapt from the ledge to the sky beyond. Giving a throaty warble Kaaoloth sprung after her his large wings effortlessly lifting him towards the emerald jewel that was Uminth.
The large brown gave an effortless barrel roll and trumpeted to her. The note was clear and loud. The other chaser was spared a half hearted glance. Not worth Uminth. Surely she deserved better. She deserved him. Leveling out above her, he battled the wind to stay in place. It would be a challenging flight. All for the better. It would make her flight so much sweeter.
Sel’n threw his wine glass across the weyr where it shattered against the wall. Of all the sharding... Vanity shrieked and scampered into his furs to peek out at her bonded. Mine cripple unhappy yes. Go. Go. Run? The brown rider threw her a murderous glance before Kaaoloth’s emotions overwhelmed him and he groaned. “Damn…it…Kaao.” Shaking his head vigorously the threw open the door and stumbled into the hallway. Flight rooms. He had to make it to the flight rooms.
It was the faintest restless niggle but since Darya wasn’t occupied with anything else she noticed it and looked around for her salamandyr. She’d thought the bronze was obeying Ellie’s injunction to stay out of Flights, though she suspected Imp’s spin on this was that he would naturally obtain Ellie’s affections for being such an obedient bronze. However Imp wasn’t to blame, the salamandyr was stretched out, sound asleep on Darya’s furs, with his tail curled around Bit.
With a sudden flash of suspicion she stepped out onto the weyrledge, and there was Azrath, lying sphinx style with just the slightest hint of purple colouring up his blue eyes. Azrath. I’m injured. She reminded the blue, tapping her splinted arm against his flank to prove her point. I’m sure R’wign meant for me to avoid all Flights, not just the ones Imp want to participate in. if she was close enough to a queenrider Darya would have pulled the same stunt on Azrath as Imp, Azrath wouldn’t be able to disobey a queen.
The blue snorted and thumped his tail against Darya’s shins. Uminth Rises soon. I will chase her. You can stay here if you chose.[/color] He pointed out reasonably, without looking around. Darya glared daggers. You know I can’t you overgrown wher. She snarled, but the argument was over. A green’s call shattered the air and Azrath sprang off his ledge with an answering bugle. He was here!
Darya groaned, muttered a series of oaths that could have stripped paint after her dragon. She hadn’t really expected him not to chase after recovering from the wing injuries he sustained during benden’s attack, she just wished he could have waited a bit longer to chase.
Uminth continued to fly higher, determined to reach a high altitude. She let the wind work for her, pushing beneath her wings to raise her faster than what she would have done herself. Before rising into the clouds she executed a tight cork screw, looking at her pursuers...only three? She snorted, fine then! The rest of the males weren't worth her anyways. As she entered the clouds she could feel the pull and push of conflicting winds. The clouds held snow...but the soft substance had been melting as it drops out of the clouds. Cold beads of moister clung to her hide as she sought to be above. It took several long seconds in the blinding cloud bank. As worry started to thread its way into her mind she broke free. There was the sun!
Free of the towering pillars of clouds the air was calmer and the sun shone brightly upon their darkened mounds. Sunlight fractured in the droplets of moister to create a sparkling aura against her glowing hide. Oh how wonderful she was! She felt more beautiful than a queen! She glided for a moment, reveling in the contrast of warm sun and cold air, until she saw another dragon shadow against the clouds below. She turned, seeing Kaaoloth above her. How did he do that?! That's not fair! Purple eyes swirled as she took note of his skill. For surely to rise through the buffeting winds and clouds so quickly was a sign of great skill. She warbled at him playfully. If he wanted to chase she wasn't about to make it easy!
She flew towards him, pumping her wings now for speed. Flying slightly beneath him she inverted, exposing her belly as she dropped. Her tail, almost casually, passed less than a foot from his face as she dove back into the clouds. She tucked her wings close and hurtled through them, feeling the wind move her off course. She let it, wanting her decent to be unpredictable as to where she would emerge.
Diving out of the clouds she continued to drop for a hundred feet before snapping her wings and turning. This time she was close to Azrath. She executed a barrel roll, leveling off to his right before veering away. Her flying brought her perilously to Dsoleth, to whom she warbled at in a challenge to follow as she sped to a lower altitude. Hehad been the quickest to answer her. She liked that. She also didn't recognize him which sparked her interest. The heavy flying and tightly executed maneuvers where wearing her out, but she wasn't ready to give up. No, she wanted to continue!
~~~
Inside the Weyr Kalina frantically looked for the flight room. She barely knew where it was. After running and running and starting to think she had run a loop she stopped some one, eyes bright in flight, demanding the direction of her destination. Barely a thanks made it from her lips as she once again continued running. Her heart pumped to the sound of her feet hitting the floor as she finally rounded a corner and found herself in the right place. She stopped, breathing heavily and pulling the extra shirt off of her heated body. It was tossed down forgotten, as a man followed her to the rooms.
Already? She quickly noticed two things. One was that they were the only two in the room. Two, that he was a stranger to her. Where Uminth was excited and intrigued at having a strange dragon Kalina was very much nervous. She stood still a few feet from the man. Uminth's confidence and pleasure over riding her nervousness to a degree. If Uminth could give him a chance, she could right?
She observed him, unwilling to move closer but not moving away, trying to let Uminth's feelings ease her into the new-strong emotions she felt so unfamiliar with. She yearned for some sense of familiarity, the chaos raging in her mind and body kept her from completely enjoying her bonded's flight. She knew others chased her/Uminth. Where were they?

Azrath let the winds catch his wings and toss him carelessly after Uminth, until she pulled up into the clouds. Then the blue truly put in some effort, driving his body up through the thick grey clouds, fighting the tricky winds that tried to keep him from his beloved. The blue never even felt or acknowledged the fat drops of water and snow that struck his hide.
Azrath burst out of the cloudbank with a triumphant warble, moving fast enough that he fancied cloud stuff trailed from his body in visible proof of his swiftness. But Uminth vanished into clouds again, what a tease! Azrath marked her direction from the vague glow of her eyes before it vanished, only to find that Uminth did not re-emerge from the clouds at all where he expected.
Instead the little tease had appeared right next to him and rolled away. Azrath whipped his tail in her direction, not aiming to catch, only to touch, to give the little tease back some of her own medicine.
Darya growled, a low predatory sound composed of equal parts rage at Azrath and lust for the green’s rider. The few drudges who roamed the corridors fell back quickly, thanks to Imp Darya had gained something of a reputation for running around half dressed and trying to jump random people.
Fortunately Darya was focused enough on getting to the flightrooms that she didn’t even notice those who stepped aside. Where was that tricky little green tease? Ah here. Darya stepped confidently through the door, and like Azrath she had eye’s only for her green.

Dsoleth watched the green beauty rise higher. Up and up...Such grace and speed! The large brown had no hope of matching that and he crooned sadly as she disappeared past the clouds, envious of the other brown's quick ascent as he too broke through the winter storm. Dsoleth laboured up, determined to keep up as best he could. He was doing admirably for a brown of his size and he only wished that glorious green would take note.
Suddenly, his target plumeted out of the cloud cover. She flew close to both him and the blue contender. At her challenging call his purple hued eyes spun faster and he crooned. He pulled his wings close for the added speed gravity would give him. He slowed himself gradually so he wouldn't pass her or fall to his death. Down he good do easily. Up was an interesting challenge but one he would brave many times for this green.
T'san's mosty unseeing eyes followed the green's rider. What little thought he kept was certain of that. He stopped short in what appeared to be the flightrooms. Or at the very least, what this woman chose to be the flightrooms. He felt the overwhelming urge to just rip off all his clothes, lay himself bare for this girl. And girl she was. Younger than he, if he was any judge. Which he really wasn't under the circumstances.
Nervous. Or novice? Both possible. Which meant he couldn't fully surrender to Dsoleth's concious, take part in the flight as dragon and rider should. For the sake of hopefully calming her down he gave a slight wink before apparently phasing out. He didn't want to think! He wanted to do. For the time being he basked in the presence of his green. He need not share her for a few moments longer. Then another appeared but it didn't bother him. The green was who mattered!

Kaaoloth returned Uminth’s warble with a playful croon of his own and a barrel roll. Such a sweet green she was. He normally didn’t go for the sweet ones but there was something about her that drew him. Beautiful she was. With such skill in the air. The large brown watched her with whirling purple eyes and tensed for her next move. Clever tease what would she throw at them next? There...the slight movement of flight muscles clued him in to Uminth’s next move. A veteran of flights the large brown loved it when females threw new things at him. It made the game more exciting.
When Uminth flew towards him he hovered for a moment not sure of her intentions. Surely she wasn’t ready to pick yet? They had only begun. But no…She was passing beneath him. The tail flick in front of his face excited him beyond words. Clever girl. Rumbling appreciatively the brown snapped his wings closed to plummet after her. The cold moisture beading along his hide did little to cool the raging fire burning within him for his lovely Uminth. As he dropped out of the cloud bank he snapped his wings open suddenly arresting his downward momentum. Veering to the left he followed beneath her this time as she flirted with her blue chaser. Kaaoloth gave a loud bugle and rolled slowly to display his scarred hide for her. The large brown kept her in his sights. Tricky this one was. He liked to be kept guessing.
Sel’n/Kaaoloth made it to the flight rooms shortly after his green. Crooning low in his throat he bowed to her and twirled in a slow circle as Kaaoloth did. Such a prize she was. Clever girl. The other chasers where spared not even a glance. His green captured the whole of his attention. As well she should. What would she do next?

"It's too bright out! You'll blind yourself!"
Pidesk crooned pitifully, trying to push his bonded out of the doorway with all his might. It was stormy enough, and Pidesk made that as clear as possible to Piden. It was practically dark out! He'd have to squint, but the Wher was convinced that his eyes would be fine.
"Desk... She's a DRAGON! You can't chase her- you can't even reach her!"
But Pidesk had never chased, and he did glide better than most other Whers. In fact, he hadn't been around anything that was rising since they had left Selenitas, when he was barely even mature. Piden knew his Bronze had a penchant for Greens- he'd stare at Red for hours if Piden let him, and Red was not exactly the pinnacle of salamandyr beauty. She'd never risen either, probably because they were hundreds of miles from where all her kin lived by the time she was mature, and generally stayed away from flits; Piden, however, was fairly sure that Pidesk wouldn't even give up the chance to chase her. The two were fast friends, despite their obvious species differences.
While Piden was lost in the train of thought, Pidesk shoved his way free, taking off for the front of the Wherhandler's Apartments. He knew where she was, his beautiful green, way up in the air where he couldn't get to her. Looking up at the sky made Pidesk squint, though- despite the comforting thoughts he sent his rider, his eyes HURT. And he couldn't even see Uminth, just the tail ends of some chasers dissapearing into the clouds. Still, Pidesk took off for the highest point in the Weyr, attempting to get as close to the stunning green as he could.
Piden groaned as Pidesk broke through, both from the strain of the Bronze's push and from the flightlust that crashed over him. This was new- he'd felt like this before, but only in the very middle of sex, not before he'd even seen the woman. At least, he assumed woman, but he wouldn't object to a man, either. He didn't know where the flightrooms were- they didn't matter to Handlers, really, as Whers had their own areas where Runs were conducted- but through Pidesk's connection, he knew where Uminth's was. He took off for her glowing presence, ignoring the green Salamandyr squeaking and frilling madly on his shoulder, just barely holding in the contents of her stomach as he ran. He found the room with little difficulty, rounding the corner as Uminth herself dropped out of the cloud cover and Pidesk launched himself dangerously out into space, gliding towards her falling form, still so far above him. Vague recognition registered in the back of Piden's brain- he and Kalina had been candidates together, after all, although he didn't remember her name- but it didn't matter. Only she mattered, and if Pidesk could not reach her, perhaps Piden could.
All in all, Piden was terrified.

As Uminth plummeted through the altitude she had tried so hard to gain earlier she trilled. Another suitor! The Wher was gliding through the air towards her. She angled close enough to him to warble greeting before flaring her wings and flying above the tree tops. She greatly enjoyed everyone that pursued her, especially the browns. Azrath was beautiful to her too, such a pretty blue!. Her late arrival was well thought of, even if he was late. She knew the Whers had trouble in daylight and the effort complimented her. Feeling her muscles tiring some she rose one last time. She turned back to weave among her suitors, trying to decide who was best.
She executed a fly by over Azrath, curling her neck and tail, playing with him as she passed. Seeing Kaaoloth nearby she dipped down in a curve around him...teasing with the elusive tail and risking a collision by her proximity before drifting away and turning towards Dsoleth. Who did she want? She wasn't sure which one. If she hadn't gotten so tired she would simply fly and fly. Passing him by she almost brushed him wing tip to wing tip.
~~~
Kalina/Uminth looked upon her suitors in the flight room. Uminth's happiness had overcome her own worries as she felt truly in flight in a way so much more exhilarating than simply flying a dragon back. As Uminth twisted and turned playfully among her males Kalina did so as well. She smiled at Sel'n/Kaaoloth who had treated her to such a wonderful display. Moving near Piden but not touching she grinned at him as she passed by. She looked at Darya/Azrath. How did he fly with an injured arm? She crooned at the blue rider and as Uminth passed over Azrath Kalina walked around Darya trailing her fingers along the rider's back. She liked the blue but didn't want him hurting. So moving away she found herself in front of Sel'n. She smiled coyly and rotated her hips as she turned like a belly dancer. She enjoyed teasing the experienced brown. He had chased her among the clouds and sun down to the feisty air below. Moving away with a tempting walk she was once again in front of T'san/Dsoleth. She shivered, Uminth was very much intrigued by this male, who she didn't know. Kalina's smile widened into a grin and she moved closer, brushing her fingers along his arm before drifting away to stand between the men uncertain who she wanted more.
Dsoleth smoothly switched from his downward chase to an ascent. He felt a tiredness creeping into his wingbeats and renewed his effort. He was a brown! He was tiring but he was more built to last longer than to fly with as much agility and grace as Uminth did. He would hardly give up before her choice was made. He rose almost to greet her as she swept through the ranks of males, testing and teasing. He watched her play with amusement and admiration. She was truly the ruler of the sky.
He felt excitement and then disappointment within the same wingbeat. Oh to have her so close just to have her fly by him. Dsoleth did a quick barrel roll before he could think better of it. Such a tease she was! Perhaps his energy was dropping but his spirits sure weren't. Gorgeous greens were worth every moment of the chase.
T'san watched the green walk away and barely managed to keep himself from following her, catching her. Damned if he did, damned if he didn't. He crooned sadly, a small sound as she walked off to view other males. His waiting and watching ended up paying off. She wandered over to him again. Oh she was wonderful! But, of course, she knew that. What other reason would he be here for if she was not the most wonderful, most glorious...Ooh! He reveled in her touch, her hands so vibrantly alive against his arm. Wonderful, glorious green!
Azrath made a curious little sound, momentarily paying attention to something other than the object of his desire. Had a wher joined the chase? Azrath looked over his shoulder at the new chaser, which was, yes, a bronze wher. The blue gave a kind of midair wing shrug, well if the wher wanted to chase Azrath wouldn’t give up his chance to stop the bronze.
After that moment’s thought Azrath returned his attention wholly to Uminth, she, after all, was the most important one in the air. It was only fitting that she should have all the attention. She was the most beautiful, bright, and agile creature in the air, Azrath was certain. He levelled his sharp descent out gently, not losing the speed he’d gained in his dive, to pursue his sweet green out over the trees that, Azrath thought, complimented her subtly shaded hide quite wonderfully.
Uminth led the way upward again, and Azrath gladly followed her to higher altitudes, putting everything he had into the pursuit of the maiden green, while at the same time using little tricks to save himself a little energy whenever he could. The blue was very proud of his ability to use the winds to his advantage and he knew that every small mesure of energy he saved now would be something he could use after he caught Uminth, if he caught Uminth.
The little tease flew proudly back over his head, her neck and tail curled gracefully, Azrath rolled over and drifted beneath her, ignoring the odd feeling of air filling the wrong side of his wings in favour of a chance at impressing Uminth. He crooned sadly as she moved on to taunt the browns and rolled the right way up again. Well at least they would be teased as thoroughly as he. Whatever her choice Uminth would keep them guessing until the end.
Darya leaned into the sensation of fingers running across her back, her blood fizzing with elation, Uminth was touching her! Darya spun neatly on one foot, an earthbound mirror to her dragon’s movements. But her green had already darted away to torment her other chasers.
Pidesk flapped as hard as he could, but he knew it was futile. He simply could not keep aloft, not like the dragons. He hated it, but every flap only dropped him closer to Pern's surface. Uminth's dip and warble lifted his spirits, but not his body. Growling a greeting, he spiraled down to the earth, landing awkwardly due to his squinted eyes (not to mention that he only had eyes for the shining green beauty above him). Despite the trip and stumble he needed to recover from his uncomfortable landing, he dashed back to the top of the Weyr, preparing to launch himself again.
As Uminth skimmed off over the trees, Pidesk launched himself once again- he was fast on the ground, even for a Wher, and quite nimble. His sandy bronze hide seemed to glow in what little light there was, his green-bronze racing stripes only making him look faster. There was no way, though. The dragons simply outstripped him in speed, and there was nothing to do about the fact that he couldn't really fly. He crooned in dissapointment as she rose above his level again, only increasing his desire for the unreachable. Whers, though, couldn't reach for Rukbat- only for the moons and the stars, not without going blind.
When Kalina/Uminth came close, Piden reached out for her, trying to reach her where his Wher never could. He wasn't fast enough, though- by the time his hands closed, she was gone. It felt like his heart was being ripped out, shivers wracked his body, he couldn't resist- but he knew he had to. He couldn't touch, couldn't force her. So he stepped back, forcing his back against the wall. He wouldn't win this flight, that he knew- he just didn't know what happened after. He didn't remember that being covered in Wherling lessons. If only it could be Kalina/Uminth....
Oh so soon? Uminth felt her energy dwindle. She banked into a gradual curve as she turned back towards her suitors. Who did she want? As her suitors came into to view she trilled in dismay. Was Kaaoloth tired already? To her it seemed like the handsome brown had worn out somehow... That wouldn't do. She passed over Azrath and Pidesk again...not trying to do anything fancy.
Instead she flew up to Dsoleth....the brown had sparked her curiosity from the beginning and she liked him. Angling off to fly besides him she trilled happily and moved close enough to touch. Lets us fall together in the chill wind and forget that winter surrounds us. She crooned again as she moved close enough to flick her tail against him playfully. All he had to do was reach out and take her.
~~~
Kalina/Uminth looked around at her men in confusion at first...walking thoughtfully by each one again as she tried to pick. Standing once again before T'san she trembled...had Uminth meant to pick him all along? She couldn't be sure but knew now that thisbrown was the one she wanted. He had reacted quickly to her and intrigued her. Stepping up to him she wrapped her arms around him crooning softly. He wanted her too right? He would not let them fall? Even with her mind thoroughly linked with Uminth she could tell the young man before her was a handsome man...and vaguely hoped he was as passionate as his hazel eyes suggested.

Dsoleth watched the green fly over to him and he could hardly believe it. Was she really picking him? The sound of her voice brushing made him croon lovingly. Winter was, indeed, promptly forgotten as her tail flicked him. Ohhh, true true! She had chosen him. He twined his neck and tail with hers. His! And he was hers. He let them fall, confident in his ability to stop their plunge at the right time.
T'san's eyes had locked with Kalina's when she came to stand before him again. He desired her in the same way Dsoleth had his green. Her arms around him made him growl in triumph. He could never, ever let her fall. He gently reached up with one hand to her face, the other going to her waist. Gentle. Yes, he could be both gentle and passionate. He placed his other hand around her waist too and kissed her.
