the Faerie Clutch

Cluttered into one corner, the clutch is nothing if not unorganized to most observers. Surely to the gold herself there is some sort of order, for she finds it simple to locate which egg she wishes to find in a moment of time, but for those who haven’t the luck to get a chance to commit the eggs to memory, it will nearly be impossible to tell where each egg is. And unfortunately, Jingth does not allow much a chance for anyone. She may look lazy sprawled on top of the queen’s ledge, but be warned: Any who venture near her clutch without her permission will find their noses shortened by a few inches.
01. the SELKIE egg
At first glance, the Selkie Egg resembles the Faun Egg greatly. Settled near the center of the clutch, its shell has the same neutral color scheme. This time, though, the tan, a smooth coloring, is at the very bottom, almost invisible when the sand is piled around it, and the majority of the egg is brown, a lighter, silver-tinged hue with dark gray lines to indicate fur. The same dark gray appears in large dapples and rings across the gray-brown section of the egg, none of them venturing near the tan.
The Selkie Egg gives off a quaint sense of cheerful excitement at being touched; the creature within seems to enjoy the attention, certainly. However, linger too long and one will find their mind bombarded with thoughts that seem far too complicated for a mere hatchling to possess – thoughts too fleeting to really grasp, but…they manage to be confusing nonetheless. Call it a talent.
02. the FAUN egg
Of all the eggs of the clutch, the Faun Egg is settled closest to the dragon couch and its clutchmother. Despite its place of honor, however, it isn’t exactly attractive in the typical sense. Instead, it’s a backwash of brown dark enough to resemble black near the bottom, miniscule lines of true black giving it a shaggy appearance. The odd coloration continues to about halfway up, whereupon it changes drastically to light tan shade, though down one side, it looks as if a translucent dark brown has been painted on over the tan, a few long stripes.
Despite the dark color, though, the Faun Egg clearly contains a friendly creature, for the touching will bring about a subtle feeling of warmth, acceptance, calmness – perhaps a welcome reprieve from the more explosive emotions the others offer.
03. the ELF egg
The Elf Egg is in a…rather compromising position. It seems to be actively trying to lean away from the other eggs, settled on one edge. Unfortunately, given that eggs lack the ability to move, it’s just canted awkwardly at an angle, a little seat of sand pushed around it to compensate and keep it from rolling over. Nevertheless, it’s…well, it’s bright, a medley of deep golds, reds, and greens, all dark enough not to be eye-popping despite the contrast. The colors swirl across and twine around each other, fading into the next; it’s impossible to tell where one ends and the next begins.
The creature within could not be further from the cheerfulness that this egg’s coloring inspires. A touch – the merest brush of fingertips against shell – of the Elf Egg brings a burst of what is undoubtedly complaining; why are people touching?! It just wants to be left alone; is that really too much to ask…?
04. the WILL O’ THE WISP egg
The darkest egg of all, the Will o’ the Wisp Egg is, from most sides, an inky black. It doesn’t glitter; it has no gleam; it does not shine when the light hits it. It’s a black hole, infinite, bottomless, frightening. However, when one walks all the way around, one will find that there is more to it than just blackness. A single brilliant pinpoint of pale, silvery-gold appears near the bottom of the egg, surrounded by a milky, transparent silver that fades rapidly back into the black.
At a touch, however, the Will o’ the Wisp Egg becomes a chaotic creation indeed, nothing of the dark calmness the egg appears to inspire. Flashes of near-incoherent emotion and an overall brilliance will appear in the minds of whomever attempts to touch it, all but crippling in its intensity – a storm that will cease only once the hand has been lifted again.
05. the NYMPH egg
Leafy is the best way to describe the Nymph Egg. Shades of green, dappled with yellow like sunlight, spread around the egg, rounded diamond-like shapes outlined in the thinnest of dark green lines, which also spread in erratic veins through the entire display. Beyond the green lies a relatively deep, warm brown with red undertones, with gray painted over it in transparent layers that give the brown shades an appearance of roughness, of not being quite perfectly smooth.
Touching it will prove that the egg is certainly smooth. The Nymph Egg is also a clingy creature. Once you touch this egg, why would you move on to another? For those that touch this egg first, the hatchling within is warm, welcoming, pleasant, if simple-minded – those that have chosen to approach another before find nothing but a sniffy distaste.
06. the BROWNIE egg
The Brownie Egg is…exactly that: Brown. Brown and furry, to be precise. Like the Faun Egg, lines and intricate shadings offer an illusion of hair, or fur, but the somehow, the Brownie Egg manages to look a good deal more attractive than its clutchsibling. Perhaps it’s the fact that the color is a good deal lighter; perhaps it’s because of the rich golden undertones that highlight the egg where the light hits it. However, for every golden highlight, there’s a lowlight that’s the deepest imaginable black – they’re just…hidden.
At first touch, the Brownie Egg might as well have been dead. A cold lack of emotion will certainly be unexpected to most – followed by an analyzing that goes intrusively, uncomfortably deep, before the creature within seems to just turn over (metaphorically) – completely indifferent.
07. the PIXIE egg
The Pixie Egg is a bright egg – very likely the brightest in the clutch. An explosion of yellows, golds, oranges, reds covers the shell like fireworks, with several starting points. The colors overlap brilliantly, sure to be eye-blinding, had it not been for the mellower background of green behind the fireworks. Across the entire egg is an odd translucent sheen, like dragonfly’s wings, glimmering under the light in iridescent rainbows. Definitely a stunning egg, it’s settled near the center of the clutch, as if it needed any more attention.
Despite the brilliance of its colors, the Pixie Egg offers different, usually mellow, sensations depending on who touches it. Overexcited? A liquid calming sensation, gentle amusement. Fascinated? A wave of amusement, and a curious sense of indulgence. Bored? That will earn a prick of irritation. Certainly an egg very much in tune with its surroundings.
08. the LEPRECHAUN egg
Settled close to the Elf Egg, the Leprechaun Egg stands proudly in a little throne of sand despite the fact that it’s closer to the edge of the clutch than the middle. Dressed in every color of green imaginable, the Leprechaun Egg’s shell is covered in patches of different greens. They don’t flow into one another – each color is definitely its own shade. Outlining each one, like pieces to a puzzle, is a ribbon of dark gold, weaving in and out and slightly raised from the rest of the shell.
In direct contrast to the surliness offered by its closest clutchsibling, the Leprechaun Egg offers a positive burst of emotion: Cheerful confidence; hello, hello! There’s an underlying thread of flirtatiousness for all, but the more empathetic of male Candidates might be able to feel a faint wariness.
