Aren’t you supposed to be patrolling? Kaiusk asked her handler as he took a plate and filled it with food. He didn’t look like he was paying attention to her, but he looked at her with a sideways glance. “Hm? We are patrolling.” Kaiusk gave him an incredulous look, rumbling lightly. No. You’re eating. She sounded amused, but Kai didn’t know what was so funny about his empty stomach. “Yes. Now I am eating, but very soon we’ll be patrolling.” She gave him a look, and he huffed. “Give me a break. I haven’t eaten in like…ages, and I’m a growing boy!”
Kaiusk gave a sigh, refraining from telling Kai once more that he wasn’t actually a growing boy at all, but a man. It was nice to see him out and actually eating for a change. It was a stark contrast from the months he’d spent holed up and depressed. Still. We should be looking out for predators. “Like what? Vicious canines?” He laughed and shoved a piece of meat into his mouth. “Calm yourself. There are others patrolling, not just us. I’ll be out there in a second. I’m starving.” Sighing, the wher went to curl up around Kai’s chair as he sat down to eat, keeping an eye out for dining hall troubles.
Predictably, there was none. And Kai showed up to patrol, a couple of rolls in hand, late. Kaiusk wasn’t pleased, her eyes flashing slightly greenish orange, as she grumbled at Kai’s side. I’m glad you’re out an about, but do you really have to be so lazy? The whermaster gave her a wounded look, then smiled and patted her neck with a free hand. “I’m not lazy, okay? How can I help protect the weyr if I’m fainting dead away from hunger?” He proceeded to prove this comment by shoving one of the rolls in his mouth as they searched for whoever they were supposed to be patrolling with.
They’re going to call you lazy. Kaiusk piped up from his side. “Would you just stop? They are no…” He caught sight of the they after too long and smiled widely. “Yoalla!” Well, he could have worse company. Kaiusk was just happy to see Yosk, forgetting about her irritation towards Kai and giving the green a pleased little croon.

Yoalla turned on her heel, and abruptly stopped, because all the pacing in the world wasn’t going to make the greenpair’s partners for this night’s patrol turn up any faster. The diminutive woman’s eye fell on her wher for a moment, she considered having Yosk call after the missing goldpair, then sighed softly and dismissed the notion. Presumably they were aware of the hour and had just decided not to show up on time. Yoalla’s expression fell into a frown as she considered that.
Yosk watched her handler grow more irritated and shifted unhappily; her head drooping lower than normal in a subconscious effort to shield herself against whatever conflict might be brewing. Yosk adored and respected her chosen handler, but she knew well that Yoalla’s temper toward both other humans and queens of any species was not the best. Besides that Yosk wanted to get to work now.
A flash of gold hide behind Yoalla, that quickly formed into a view of Kaiusk, had Yosk lifting her head up again in relief and welcome. The pale wher move to stand beside the larger female, looking up slightly at her. She was happy to see Kaiusk and hers at last! The green projected her thoughts earnestly. Yoalla was getting impatient, more than usual.
Yoalla turned sharply, locking a glare onto Kaius as if it was the targeting system for a new, latecomer blasting weapon of mass destruction. “Ah Kaius,” the greenhandler greeted him with a mirthless smile, “glad you could make it before the end of days.” Yoalla made a gesture that indicated she was looking pointedly at her watch, a gesture that was diminished somewhat by the fact that she wasn’t wearing a watch, and then looked expectantly at him.
