Cainith walked casually through the cold Northern air, his beard, thick body hair, and layer of fat causing him to only require a cotton jacket and thick cotton gloves in addition to his cotton pants and wherhide boots in order to resist the chilly weather. His right arm was wrapped around the shoulders of his weyrmate Ivy, and on his left shoulder sat his son Aithyn, the toddler's fingers curled in his father's thick hair for support as he was supported by one of the bluehandler's huge hands.
Suddenly, Cainith noticed something... a cordoned-off opening in the ice, with a sign reading, "Polar Dip". Turning towards Ivy, he said, "Hey, let's go check that out," and began moving his little family in the direction of the sign. As he walked, he was reminded how odd it felt not having his mindmates close... Cainsk had not shown a desire to visit the North for the Gather, and so had stayed behind at Blossom, while Ivy had asked Cainith to leave Rollhead behind as well... he believed due to the fact that Ivy desired some time with just the three of them, without Rollhead's constant running commentary and attempts to "teach the Goddess-child the proper way to worship".
Reaching the sign, he leaned forward a bit to read it... apparently it was a sort of contest to see who could stay in the freezing water the longest, and there were even small prizes. Cainith leaned forward a bit more to read some of the smaller text, when suddenly a loud snapping noise filled the air. Freezing in place, he glanced down, only to see that the ice was beginning to spiderweb beneath his feet... he had apparently moved too close to the thinner ice they had broken out, and his massive weight was too much for it.
Moving very, very carefully, he said, "Ivy, love, take Aithyn and move over there... slowly, now." Taking Aithyn off his shoulder and handing the 3-turn-old to his redheaded weyrmate, he waited until they were a good distance away from him before he attempted to step off the ice... and the shifting of his weight was the final straw, as the ice beneath his feet shattered, dropping the giant man into the freezing lake water. Desperately grabbing out, Cainith was able to snag one of the cordon ropes before he fell completely, and soon bobbed to the surface, sputtering water and breathing hard.
The event runners, panicking, attempted to grab the cordon rope Cainith was gripping to help pull the giant out, but then Cainith said, "By Faranth, this is cold! I think I became a woman for a moment, there," before letting loose a shivering chuckle. Stripping off his shirt and jacket carefully, then his boots one at a time, he threw the sodden clothing out onto the ice as he assured the event runners (and his wide-eyed weyrmate and son), "It's fine, it's fine... I was thinking of participating anyway!" Looking out at the staring crowd that had gathered from the commotion, he grinned and yelled out, "Come on, who else wants to join in? The water's f-f-f-fine!"
