R I A R E N
Age- 10
--Birthmonth/year- May 3013
Gender- Male
Sexual Orientation- n/a
Rank- Weyrbrat
Physical Appearance- He’s not the biggest kid on the block, so to speak, but Riaren’s certainly not all skin and bones scrawny, either; he’s got a childish sort of wiry strength because you just don’t live with the people he has and not figure out that some semblance of strength is necessary at the Weyr. There’s certainly the promise of height with long legs, and he’s not quite edged into that stage of gangly growth spurts yet, but his shoulders are thin and fragile with his hips narrow to match. Still, it’s honestly difficult to perceive Riaren as remotely imposing—his skin tends to be pale, although fortunately he tans instead of burning, however transient said tans may be.
Still, the stark paleness of his skin is offset by dramatically curling black hair that flops over his eyes and spills down the nape of his neck. Riaren’s always kept it on the longer side—even though it’s nearly unmanageable some days, he hates the idea of short hair. His eyelashes are long and equally dark, his eyes a startling deep green with flecks of brighter emerald around the iris. Lips are full and often either quirked in a small smile or in solemn lines; his face is an extraordinarily expressive one for emotions.
As clothing goes, Riaren’s taste is simple and expansive; he frankly doesn’t really care what he wears as long as it’s not totally girly and it’s functional for his purposes, which are fortunately limited. That said, he’s definitely got phases of weird taste—for the moment he’s got a private vendetta against shoes of any kind, which is, at least, better than the few weeks where he’d been totally convinced hats were a necessity for life.
Personality- Riaren’s as quiet a child as he was a toddler; the boy’s an extraordinarily unimposing presence even when he tries, tends to fade into the background, particularly in the light of his adopted sister’s exuberance. Fortunately, Riaren has very few complaints about the status quo. Not that he’s not fond of attention, mind, because he is, but it’s to a subtler and shyer degree, and certainly he’d much rather avoid as much negative attention as possible. That said, Riaren is, quite unknown even to himself, manipulative to an extent; if he lets Terilyn get her way (and very often he does, following his sister’s impetuous recklessness with quiet dignity and patient suffering), it’s rarely to his detriment, and he’s good at picking out loopholes in rules.
(Although that might very well be to his detriment—it’s not like “you never said I couldn’t” tends to be a fairly unappealing proposition coming from a ten-year-old who’s quite aware of what he’s not actually supposed to do.)
He takes a very obvious pride in the legacy of his parents; Riaren doesn’t remember either of them as more than a vague impression based more on what he’s heard than his own memory, but he’s defiantly and stubbornly determined to hold them in the highest regard. Predictably, then, Riaren tends to gravitate towards the Infirmary; even if he can’t actually officially learn Healing, well—there’s no reason he can’t help, and the Infirmary’s become something of an escape for him.
Even in Terilyn’s shadow, Riaren’s a blatantly friendly child nonetheless; he can get quite rambunctious with his friends, although he does try to tone it down in the presence of others, and while he’s still an observer rather than an instigator most of the time, he’s got a definite sense of mischief. It’s subtle, yes, and it’s not like he’s going out of his way to pull pranks, but his sense of humor comes out prominently to those closer to him—and perhaps even some who aren’t; he’s not necessarily shy in the true sense of the word. People don’t frighten him, and he’s certainly not afraid of meeting new people or anything—he just doesn’t really see the point, necessarily.
If anything, he’s got a sense of confidence that stems primarily from the fact that he knows people; his affection for Legatus has never died, and it’s never occurred to Riaren that he might not be welcome in the Infirmary with E’rro and Raebeli.
That said, his preferred companionship—Terilyn aside; her claim to siblinghood trumps all else—comes in the form of the draconic. Riaren’s unequivocally fond of firelizards; he’s heard his father had a whole flock of them—and he’s wanted to Impress a dragon for as long as he can remember—a brown, preferably, like his father’s dragon, and M’ta’s and E’rro’s; they’re so obviously the best.
History-
3013-3016: Selenitas Weyr
Riaren was conceived in Flightlust; his mother, Meira, of blue wher Meisk, was on friendly terms (at best) with his father, R’wign of brown Checkoth—only coworkers and acquaintances in the Infirmary at worst. Although the incident was written off as never again to be spoken of, Meira becoming pregnant threw things for a loop. She decided to keep the child, despite her reservations.
Later in the pregnancy, Meisk was killed in a Fort attack, and by the time Riaren was born one month premature, Meira had Impressed gold Jingth. Consequentially, she was extremely busy with Healing and Weyrlinghood, and Riaren’s life became a strange dual-home sort of affair, with part of his time being spent with his idolized father and his father’s weyrmate, M’ta, and the other part of it spent with his mother.
The equilibrium was shattered when Wasteland took over, and Riaren’s mother was forced to flee with a small group of Riders—leaving Riaren behind. He adapted well, though; he had no end of assurances that his mother was well and alive, and his father had always been the one he had idolized most, anyway.
R’wign’s death, then, was devastating to the child.
It was inevitable that M’ta hand him over to Meira at Gather, but even reunion with his mother was only a mild mitigation for the permanent loss of his father.
3016: Burimyu Weyr
The small community at Burimyu Weyr was not one that Riaren had much time to become accustomed to before his mother died, too, and left him completely alone and without even the ‘uncle’ with whom he had grown up.
Riaren ended up as the honorary Legatus mascot; even at his unhappiest he was never a loud or fretful child, and in time he ended up using E’rro as something of a pale replacement of R’wign—E’rro was a brownrider and a Healer and even though he wasn’t R’wign otherwise, he was kind and warm and something steady in the chaos.
3016-3017: Selenitas Weyr
The isolation of Burimyu did not last long; Riaren was sent back to Selenitas via Blossom Hold shortly after; he was unaware of the circumstances, but honestly just grateful to get back—even if he knew sneaking in during the night was not normal, ‘weird’ was already his status quo, so it was unimportant in the face of just getting back to half, at least, of his original family.
It didn’t last long before the earthquake struck, about half a year later; Riaren was unharmed in the disaster, but Selenitas was decimated—and so it was that when Burimyu offered aide to Selenitas, Riaren found himself moving back to Burimyu again, now called “New Selenitas”.
3017: New Selenitas Weyr
If Riaren still missed his parents, well, that was inevitable, and he was mostly over it—in day to day life, the boy was genuinely happy, even if, okay, Terilyn could be kind of annoying sometimes. In any case, Kai wasn’t annoying, and if Terilyn got too pushy, Riaren could always go visit Kai and his mother (and if he was jealous of Kai having a mother, well, he kept that to himself).
He wasn’t still quite able to comprehend the war even when 3018 and the end of it began to roll around; it didn’t really affect him except in the sense that part of Legatus wing—every member of whom Riaren was to some degree starry-eyed in idolization over—left the South.
The real shift came in moving away from M’ta and in with E’rro—which wasn’t really a change for Riaren, who was honestly still getting accustomed to living with M’ta again—but it was still the sort of instability that was bewildering and occasionally frustrating. Nevertheless, life went on, and E’rro was as close to an idol as Riaren got after R’wign—whose legacy had only been immortalized for Riaren in his death.
By 3019, he and Terilyn were living with M’ta again, presumably since E’rro had to go to War with the rest of his wing in the North. Riaren was distressed—he was surely and rapidly becoming familiar with the patterns associated with war—but every Legatus member came back alive and relatively unharmed, and as the War finally ended and the departures became scarce and merely for the purpose of cleaning up the spillover, Riaren gradually lost interest in the War—it had come, and it was gone now.
The boy spent gradually more time in the Infirmary—with the majority of Healers deported following the Summit’s decisions, the Infirmary was predictably empty and even if he couldn’t really train to be a Healer if he wanted to be a dragonrider, he could still help with the little things, and E’rro and Raebeli were less annoying company than Terilyn—even if he did spend just as much time with her and Kai.
