Let’s go swimming, Sarilove! The pale green dragon crooned softly, wagging her long tail with delight. Let’s go! Let’s go! Maybe we’ll even meet more people! Sari giggled softly. It was a nice day out. Sari should probably be doing chores, but they could wait. Dragon first, right? Sari wanted Upasanath to get everything she wanted. It was surprising that the Weyrling didn’t get spoiled. Mika trilled loudly, asking to be brought along. For some reason the greens got along exceptionally well. Mika liked the big, clumsy green, and Upasanath adored the tiny, pretty flit.
Dusk leapt off of the nearby bed, chirping sharply. They were not leaving without him. He reprimanded Sari with a light nip on her arm. Upasanath hissed, an unusual sound for the sweet green. I like you very much, Duskpinklittle, but if you dare harm my Sari ever again, I will make you sorry. Forever. The fire lizard shrunk back, surprised at the green’s outburst. Guilt rushed into Sari’s mind as it radiated from Upasanath. Sari stroked the large, wedge-shaped head as Upasanath crooned gently to Dusk. I am sorry for yelling.
Lazuli broke the serious moment with a loud yelp. Stop fighting and leave so he could sleep! Sari looked at the little blue with shock. What happened to the sweet little guy she’d Impressed? He crooned to her kindly. He was just tired. Dusk took this as a chance to woo his little Mika without the competition around. Of course, Lazuli was not interested in his clutch sibling, but Dusk was extremely possessive and jealous, even of what wasn’t his. Sari would much prefer Lazuli’s company to Dusk’s. Dusk was a bit of a buzz kill, to say the least.
So they headed to the closest water body: the river. Upasanath led the party, mostly out of eagerness. Sari came behind her, holding the too-long tail, as much for Upasanath’s health as her own. Although the flopping of the long tail had proved injurious to Upasanath, it was also capable of tripping, shoving, or otherwise knocking Sari to the ground. The tail was getting heavier by the day, but (for now) Sari could carry it. Dusk was making her job harder by flying around her head, tugging at her skirt and shirt. Sometimes Dusk was a pest simply to be a pest. Mika, perched on Upasanath’s shoulder, crooned to Dusk. Would he please stop harming Sari and be calm, maybe sit with her?
Of course, Mika was confused as to why Dusk chirped excitedly and sat beside her, but the little green was oblivious. No, not oblivious. She was downright stupid.
The river was lovely today. The sun reflected on the water, glistening lightly. Upasanath made a strange squeaking sound with glee. She flounced into the water somewhat comically. Mika crooned joyously, jumping off the green into the water. Dusk, however, hissed indignantly, struggling to free himself from the water. Even as he reached shore, he was still wet. How annoying! Upasanath crooned apologetically. I am sorry Dusk! Come swimming!

K’fuzzi grumbled and rolled over to face the wall, turning away from the muzzle that insistently poked him in the shoulder. In an odd numbered group of weyrlings, there was a good side to being the one who got his own room, he never had to worry about what anyone else thought about what he did, and he had twice as much space as everyone else but on the bad side, it meant that it was up to him alone to entertain Balath when she was in a playful mood. Or try to ignore her as the case might be.
Balath gave a dragon sized sigh and settled back on her rump for a moment. Clearly poking wasn’t going to work, she thought, an expression of concentration taking over her face. Maybe she should just grab him and drag him outside. Everyone liked to play outside, right? Many people spoke of getting out in the fresh air as if it would solve everything, so obviously it must be good. The only problem of course was going to be getting K’fuzzi to go out in it. Obviously dragging him out there wasn’t a serious option. Or was it?
For a moment it seemed as if Balath had given up and gone to sulk, except that he wasn’t getting a sulking feeling from her. In fact, she wasn’t broadcasting anything, strange… Then for no reason the covers on his bunk started moving, and pulling him with them. What the? There was a muffled thump as the weyrling fell off the bed. ‘And what was all that about?’ He asked the young dragon who stood beside him, trying her hardest to look innocent with the edges of all the bedding in her teeth. I want you to come and play outside with me. Please. Balath contrived to look adorable. We could go swimming. She suggested cheerfully.
From his horizontal position K’fuzzi looked up at Balath and sighed. ‘Fine. I surrender.’ K’fuzzi held up his hands. Balath squealed, dropped all the bedding and bounded for the door right away. K’fuzzi moved a little more slowly, disentangling himself from an errant sheet and scooping up the whole pile to fling it back onto the bed.
It was a good thing that Balath’s limbs were mostly coordinated, if she was one of the clumsier hatchlings the striped green would have been flat on her face more than once during the pair’s progress to the river since did insist on running ahead, then looping back to collect K’fuzzi again before running off ahead yet again.
OH FuzziMine look! Look! It is Upasanath! My sister is here! With a high pitched sound of utter delight Balath bounded out into the river to meet the other weyrling green. Hello Upasanath! Have you brought yours out to play too? FuzziMine didn’t want to come out but I got him to. Balath cheerfully greeted her sister.

Hello, Balath! Yes, I brought mine out to swim. Isn't it just so nice out? Upasanath stretched her wings, fanning them. Water splashed under her wings. Oops! Sorry, Balath. Is yours coming in the water? Upasanath looked at Sari. Is mine coming into the water? She prodded Sari with her mind, who said she would come in soon. Upasanath crooned to her sister, urging her to play. The green dove under the water. Her long tail came in handy underwater, similar to a fish's tail. She popped up moments later behind Balath, rumbling with laughter.
Sari smiled as she watched Upasanath play. She felt the now familiar wave of love. She still couldn't believe how lucky she was. She had actually Impressed! What's more, she had Impressed the lovely green Upasanath. The green filled her life with almost unpredictable joy and playfulness. She turned to the new Weyrling who had appeared. He was a fellow greenweyrling from Hepaticath's clutch. She recognized him from lessons and the Hatching.
"Hi, I'm Sari," she offered. She recognized him, but she didn't quite remember his name. Upasanath hinted that Balath had called him 'Fuzzymine.' Surely his name wasn't Fuzzy, right? Maybe it was F'uzzy? It was still a strange name though...she let him introduce himself, and stopped wondering about his name. Dusk crawled over to the young man. He informed Sari that he didn't like this Fuzzy person. No surprise there. Dusk didn't really like anyone. Dusk glared at him, his eyes whirling with red.
Calm down, Dusk, Sari instructed. With a snort, the pinkish brown turned, sticking his tail in the air like a stuck-up feline. The short, fat fire lizard glided into the shade. He curled up, letting out a stream of chirps, trills, and angry croons. Sari found it akin to swearing. She looked apologetically at the newcomer. "Sorry...Dusk doesn't like people very much." Honestly, Sari didn't understand why he had Impressed at all. Strange little creature indeed. Mika looked away from Dusk and hers and back to Balath and Upasanath. She crooned to the new green. Hello there!

Balath pranced gleefully in the water, pleased to find someone as enthusiastic about playing as she was. I don’t know. He didn’t say. the striped green turned her head back to look anxiously at K’fuzzi. Upasanath wants to know if you are going to swim with us. What should I tell her? Balath jumped forward in surprise as her sister bounced up behind her and nearly fell because she was looking behind her.
K’fuzzi smiled fondly at his startled dragon. tell her I haven’t made up my mind yet. he answered, both amused by Balath and profoundly grateful for her existing and being Balath. She might be a pain sometimes but she made his life whole again, and K’fuzzi sometimes had to work very hard not to outright spoil his dragon.
K’fuzzi nodded, he sort of remembered her name from weyrling lessons, though he hadn’t been sure he had it right until just then. ‘Hello Sari, I’m K’fuzzi, and that’s Balath.’ K’fuzzi indicated his dragon as if there was a chance Sari hadn’t noticed her there, and while he he was looking at Balath he quite failed to notice that he was being glared at by a pinkish firelizard.
Since he hadn’t really noticed Dusk before the firelizard started scolding him K’fuzzi looked mildly surprised by the noises coming from the red eyed little beast. Looked malevolent, he was glad to see it glide away. ‘Um, that’s alright, I’m sure I can bear his dislike.’ K’fuzzi replied rather than say the feeling was totally mutual. Balath squealed at something, and K’fuzzi spun to look at her, only to find his dragon perfectly safe, and gazing at a green firelizard in adoration.
Oh look at this FuzziMine! This is a little green! Isn’t just adooooreable?! Balath’s mental tone seemed to have an excited squeak screwed into it as she spoke. K’fuzzi winced, he just knew what Balath was going to be asking him to get next. At least it would be a break from the puppy argument.

"I think Upasanath liked Balath. Then again, Upasanath likes everyones." It was true. For some reason, her greens (and her blue) were quite friendly, while her little brown was quite a problem. Dusk resented that. He was not a bother. This stupid person was a problem. Upasanath was a problem. Sari was a problem. Lazuli was a problem. Mika, however, was not a problem.
"Yeah, well then why don't you go swimming with her?" Sari muttered to the brown. He puffed out his chest. He did not swim. Swimming was disgusting. He sent her an image of disgusting water he had seen somewhere. Mika will find someone who wants to swim then, Sari teased. With that, Dusk stuck his nose into the air and glided to the water. He ignored the green dragons, looking right at Mika. He crooned sweetly to her. He loved the water just like she did!
Typical Dusk.
"Now you don't have to worry about him. He's going to go woo his love." Sari smiled. Upasanath had given her confidence, and she had become much more open and friendly. "They are a bit of a hassle, but they are wonderful. Maybe it's just because I love animals."
Ours should come into the water. Upasanath greeted the new addition. Hello, Duskpinklittle. He chirped angrily. He would not answer to that. This is Duskpinklittle, and the green is Mika. She is pretty, isn't she? But don't call her pretty, lovely, gorgeous, or anything like that. Only me and Sari can call her that. Adorable, cute, and precious were fine, and taken as compliments, but for some reason the green did not like to be called pretty.
Balath thought she was wonderful, so the green let out a purr-like rumble. She did adore her fellow greens. Even if they were much smarter than her, she felt a kinship with them. Not only was she a less intelligent fire lizard, she was less intelligent than most fire lizards. Poor memory only made this worse. She trilled happily to Dusk. She was glad he had joined the green brigade.

K’fuzzi nodded with a bright smile. ‘Balath’s like that too.’ He agreed. ‘I hope she stays this way, too. There’re some very moody adult greens and I don’t want Bala turning into them.’
Then you must play with me! Play always, so I don’t get grumpy. Balath announced cheerfully, prancing up and down in the water excitedly as she spoke.
K’fuzzi laughed softly at Balath’s solution, which was pretty much her answer for everything, just play with her and everything will work out fine. ‘Balath said she won’t grow up to be grumpy if I play with her all the time.’ He hastily explained to his classmate so she wouldn’t think he’d gone slightly mad to burst out laughing at apparently nothing.
The pinkish brown firelizard was given some consideration, K’fuzzi was used to thinking of firelizards as sweet little pets but this one was, well, not very sweet at all. In fact he seemed distinctly bad tempered. Except towards that green firelizard, the weyrling mentally added as the brown gave a sweet croon. ‘I have enough trouble keeping an eye on one fairly large dragon.’ He admitted. ‘I don’t think firelizards are for me, or those salamandyrs I’ve seen here in the south. I’d need a bigger pet, much bigger.’ There was a disappointed whine for the river, which K’fuzzi ignored. Balath wanted a little green, oh and a little blue, and a brown, and a bronze, and a gold, and another green because greens were clearly best, just look at this little one!
Balath’s eyes picked up a few confused shades to match what she was thinking, why should she not say a pretty thing was pretty? Should she call the little green ugly then? But that would be terribly unkind! On the other hand she wouldn’t want to upset Upasanath either so maybe she’d better just avoid the subject. Okay…? The striped dragon’s tone made it abundantly clear that she hoped that was the appropriate answer.
Recalling something Upasanath had said before the second firelizard arrived Balath suddenly lost her uncertainty and practically sprited out of the water. Yes, yes our should come swimming too! Lets get them now! Come oooooon FuzziMine! Come swimming with us! The end of Balath speech was punctuated by the green grabbing hold of K’fuzzi’s shirt and trying to pull him into the river.
