Keliris shrugged slightly. "You should talk to someone who's dealt with green firelizards personally before. While Anai won't be like the rest, they might know some tips in how to... well, how to manage them?" His words sounded feeble even to him, but he was trying to avoid outright telling her that it was likely that someone with a green flit knew how to resist the surge of feelings the firelizards provided when they rose to mate or gave chase. He didn't have any advice for something he knew nothing about. Unlike some people, Lir preferred to actually know what he was babbling. As a result, he was redirecting Beka's concerns to people who might know what they were talking about, as opposed to dealing with them himself. Though, he honestly thought she was stressing more than she needed to. Once she dealt with it, the problems would lessen. That was how humans worked.
He gently scratched the little green as Beka questioned him. The firelizard seemed quite confident in herself; it was funny, she was nearly the polar opposite of Chipper, who usually liked everyone. Everyone but him. Roxie, Rawign's little green, seemed content to ignore him completely. Anai on the other hand... well, she seemed determined to be the center of attention at all costs. He wasn't sure how he felt about that, but since she wasn't annoying him, he decided to leave it alone. He gained more by not questioning her.
"Hurt...? No. Well, Chipper bit me on the nose once when she was angry with me, but she's the only one." He let his voice sound as puzzled as he felt, and actually gave Beka a confused look. "What makes you think I'd get hurt by flitters a lot?" Defensive streak kicking in, he added, "I don't go around deliberately hurting them or agitating them or - or whatever you think I might do. I don't try to make firelizards dislike me, you know, they just do. You make it sound like I'm some kind of monster and I'm not. Just because I don't like people doesn't mean I have any problem with these little winged beauties. They don't stab people in the back or --"
Drawing his words to a close, Keliris scowled and turned his eyes away, trying to distract himself with something - anything - but his surging temper. However, he did add, almost sarcastically, "Because waiting gains you so much... You know, it doesn't make any sense. If you don't want to go, why agree to be a candidate? Dragons at least can protect their riders from any threats. Avoiding trying to Impress seems ridiculous to me. I don't really want to go because nothing would want me. You're just being a coward. I hope that Anemith's makes you." Did he really just call Lura by her dragon's name? Yes. He always associated people with their dragons as opposed to as individuals. Strange as it might have been, stranger still was that Keliris knew exactly who she meant. "I doubt any rider would let you hide away, Beka. It's illogical at best, and dim at the worst. But don't take my word for it; ask anyone. I'm sure every rider you know will tell you how wonderful it is to Impress. You're odd. You're afraid of being mauled, but your green won't let that happen. And if you want, I'll keep it from happening, too. This one won't be like the last one. Aslath isn't Fath. Have you even seen the eggs? They're completely different - they're more beautiful by far. Illogical girl."

A simple shrug he got in reply to this, as though she didn't really care what happened. She did though, hadn't she said that enough? Green's rose, yes she got that, but that didn't mean she had to like it, if it came down to it, she would just barricade herself away, some where nice and safe. Definately, safe. Anai could Rise, she didn't have to be a part of it any more than anyone else did. If they could control their flitts emotions, why couldn't she?
A step away was instantly taken as his voice took on a defensive note, as though Beka were afraid he'd hit her for what she'd thought was a harmless question. "I-I didn't-" Words were having trouble getting out as she tried to explain herself, all the while trying to figure out what she'd said to make him think that. Well, it was her fault that he was angry again... Or... More... Defensive any way. "I didn't mean it like that Keliris! I didn't know! So I asked, you seemed so flippant about her hurting you that I just... I guessed. I didn't think you'd hurt her, or any other flitt for that matter, you're too gentle with her. I wouldn't think that about... Well okay, I would think that about someone, but not ... Oh shard it all, do you have to be so confusing. I didn't mean to offend you, really..."
Well, that should have been obvious, if a dragonrider claimed their dragon had sensed you while doing a sweep, would you not want to go with them? The thoughts weren't said aloud as Beka merely glanced at him, ignoring his scowl for a moment. "I didn't say I didn't want to go, I said I wasn't sure. I agreed because - Oh forget it, it doesn't matter anyway." She looked away from him, glaring instead at the ground "Lura wouldn't make me go if I didn't want to... I am not odd! I just... Just... Anai can protect me from physical harm, can she protect me from that crushing dissapointment when I realise that I'm just not good enough, that no dragon would want me? I dwell too much in my history 'Lir, dragons are still babies when they hatch, what baby wants to face up to my problems? I am illogical, but I can carry my burdens myself."
Anai twittered at the both of them, scolding Beka for taking her spotlight, and Keliris for ignoring her. Hers didn't mean to upset him, like he didn't mean to upset Hers. Now, could they just get over it? Some of the older people kissed when they said sorry, should they do that then? If so, would they hurry up, Anai was getting itchy again.

"Of course not, no one ever means for their real meaning to be noticed! Why does everyone just assume I'm some heartless creature who would hurt firelizards on top of it all? Just because I don't like humans, well - well - It's not my fault people aren't worth liking! Flitters at least are worth caring about! Just because none of them like me doesn't mean I'd ever hurt someone else's, just like I'd never try to hurt someone's dragon. I'm not heartless. I'm not..."
But was he trying to convince himself or Beka as his words trailed off to near silence? The truth was, some part of Keliris was ashamed of his behavior and the way he treated people. He had a good reason for being so standoffish, or so he felt. He didn't like the idea of being abandoned or left alone completely, nor did he welcome the idea of being hurt. He had no real foundation for those feelings, either, except a natural insecurity wrought by being so sick for so long. Keliris didn't trust people and, as a result, he kept to himself a lot and used a naturally hostile outward air to keep others from approaching him. He was, in part, compensating for being so short, so feminine in appearance, with such delicate features; no one would ever bully him. But he compensated a little too well, in his experience. People seemed to think he really was a bad person. Maybe he was.
The rest of her statement was responded to with a light huff, "I just recognize that firelizards aren't humans and expecting human behavior out of them isn't fair. The same goes for all creatures. Besides, humans hurt one another all the time. Firelizards, hatchlings, even felines, domestic and wild, they don't hurt people for no reason. It's either by accident, for food, to make a point or out of self-defense. They have us beaten in that respect," he explained with a shrug. "I don't mind being scratched up by something trying to make a point. It isn't like she'd mean it to be malicious." He shook his head. He didn't understand how that fact could be anything short of blatantly obvious.
Turning back to her, Keliris pointed right at her, firmly stating, "You're a wherrybrain." Without giving her a chance to reply, he took to sweeping around her. "You dwell in the past, that's exactly the point. Dragons don't, their memories don't span that far. They let the past go. You could do well learning from them. You can handle the disappointment if you fail to Impress once; you'll have plenty of other times and for nothing else, it's the best view in the entire Weyr. If Lura won't make you go, I will. You're right. Dragons are babies. So were the firelizards and you impressed Anai. It seems to me she's coming out just fine, if a bit demanding - but I think that's her nature, not anything you did. It will be good for you to have something in the present that is happy to focus on. I'm not letting you not go -- and yes, I'm sorry, shh." Lir looked at Anai and lightly went back to scratching her, though is glare was all for Beka. He was just daring her to argue with him.

"I wasn't trying to be mean! Why can't you understand that not all people are ike that, despite what you may think, I don't set out to delibrately hurt people's feelings! I don't think you are heartless... " A pause as she struglled for words, trying to explain herself where it wasn't working, she hated doing so anyway. Why was he being so sharding difficult, was it just out of annoyance or was he trying to pick an agrument? Her eyes narrowed in a glare at him, crossing her arms over her stomach in a defensive action.
How was she supposed to know that? Beka knew nothing about him, had never even met him until this day. "How would I know that? I know nothing about you, and I was only asking so I could find out more. In future I'll make sure to run the question by you, step - by - step with every meaning, shall I?" Her words practically dripped with sarcasm, the main show that she was getting defensive, adn that she was confused. What better way to deal with someone than to use sarcasm..? Well, there were probably many ways, but Beka had yet to figure them out, seeing how much she liked her own company.
"It's alot easier to say you're going to let go, than actually doing so." Beka snapped, a little stung by his name-calling, others might be able to shrug it off, she didn't like it, never had. "Anai Impressing to me was a fluke! And she'll probably regret it later! This arguments just making me not want to go more, you can't make me go!" The words were out before Beka thought about them, and they probably didn't make sense.
Anai let out a sigh of resignation as they continued to argue, gently nudging at Keliris' ear to tell him to stop it before settling under his scratch once more. Very nice, and she had attetnion again, good. The yelling was annoying though, it was funny, Hers could change colours, she went red, then white again... Briefly, the green wondered if Keliris could do that too...

Keliris gave Beka a dirty look, but otherwise did not reply. He slowly turned his head away to avoid having to look at her face-to-face, knowing that she would be able to see just how upset he was if he had to meet her gaze. The last thing he wanted was pity, especially when he didn't think that he'd done anything wrong. Some part of him (the part hidden away beneath the surface) believed that everyone viewed him as a monster due to how hostile he tried to appear on the outside, but the truth was that Keliris didn't really dislike people as much as he said. Most people who he met, he liked well enough. He just tried to chase them off every chance he got before they noticed that he liked them and could use it to their advantage. To him, that seemed like a perfectly logical course of actions. Less chance of people hurting him if the ones who didn't genuinely want to be his friend were chased away with hostility. Unfortunately, that resulted in many of them thinking he was horrible. He wasn't.
Arguing was pointless. She'd just keep debating with him and Keliris was sure he was right, so he let it go. No point in keeping up debating a point that he was sure he'd won on. Instead, he rolled his eyes at her, giving her a bored expression. "You're not very good at sarcasm. Regardless, I'm sorry that I happen to view the world in a logical manner as opposed to taking everything any little creature does personally." Ah, but he was lying: He'd taken it very personally when none of them wanted him. Not that he'd ever voice that.
Since the topic changed, though, Lir's expression and attitude did as well. Clearly he was amused, but it was not a very kind amusement, his laughter somewhere close to cold. "Oh, I know exactly how hard it is, but you make the first step," he replied dryly. "As for whether or not I can or can't make you go..."
Keliris took a step up to Beka, temporarily dropping his hand away from Anai to give the girl what was clearly a pointed look. "You think I can't force you to go? I'm surprisingly convincing when I think I'm doing what's right, you know. Let's look at this logically, shall we? You look like you probably weigh less than I do - not surprising, though." For a man, Keliris was flat out tiny, built more like a child than any male had a right to be, but that was a subtle deceit; he was actually quite muscular and stronger than he looked. But Beka looked delicate. "I'm fairly sure if I tried, I could throw you over one shoulder like a bag of tubers and carry you, if you force me. And I'm more than willing to haul you kicking and screaming onto the Sands and sit on you the entire time if it means you go to this Hatching. You can't run from the idea of disappointment. If you close yourself off to avoid letting in anything bad, you avoid letting in the good things, too." And she'd officially struck onto Keliris's stubborn side; he'd make her go, if she pushed him.

Oh this was very confusing, what had she said now? Confusion was the main expression on the young woman's face, her mind searching desperately for some kind of notice of what she'd said to upset him. Just when she thought she was beginning to understand him, he went and did something completely weird! He was as bad as Anai in that case!
A blink as he completely switched topics, Beka finidnig it difficult to follow it, why was he suddenly commenting on her sarcasm? When did she have the chance to practice? She'd never been around anyone her own age, and any sign of defiance from her, and her father beat her into semi-submission. So, no, not alot of practice there. "I don't - Oh never mind, I don't want to argue with you. Why are you so bent on pushing people away? I'm not trying to be nasty Keliris, I wish you'd just believe that."
She met his gaze squarely, glaring at him as she listened to him, he wouldn't, wouldn't. He wouldn't risk missing the Hatching. "You wouldn't dare." Of course, her concerns he would miss the Hatching himself were put into completely different words. Words that some how completely avoided her worries, now how had she done that? "You wouldn't! Anai, can I have support here?"
Anai chirped angrily at Keliris, where was her attention, why was he paying more attention to Hers than he was to HER!? Cheeping softly she quickly composed images of people kissing, or in her ideas, eating each others faces, along with demands. Before showing a smiling Beka and what she thought a smiling Keliris would look like. They would eat each other, and then it would all be good! Then she could have her attention back!
(Short and utterly disgusting but pfft.)

Hmph. Keliris could have told her exactly why he was so determined to push everyone away from him but he didn't want to. The truth was, that would require admitting how he really felt and the redhead didn't like doing that any more than he liked dealing with people under normal circumstances. Having to talk about his feelings was akin to a tooth ache as far as Keliris was concerned and he went to express lengths to avoid it if he could. It wasn't as though most people really cared about his feelings anyway. People, as a species, did not care much about anyone but themselves, and anyone who went so far as to pretend otherwise was doing exactly that: pretending.
"I wouldn't dare?" Keliris echoed, watching Beka as though she'd finally done something interesting. In a way, she had. After all, not many people told Keliris what they thought he would flat out refuse to do.. mostly because anyone who knew him would say that there wasn't much Lir wouldn't do when he was tested, and telling him something akin to what Beka had said was almost the fastest way to convince him to do exactly what they thought he wouldn't in the first place. Usually, it was just better to ignore him, or to agree with whatever point he was trying to make. Arguing with Keliris was like arguing with the walls in the Weyr: utterly ineffective, seeing as he didn't listen. "I wouldn't...?"
Chirp! Looking at Anai, Keliris raised an eyebrow, then lightly scratched her, as if to tell her that she had nothing to concern herself about. The images he received confused him and he shook his head, slowly, before eyeing the firelizard. She was a strange one, wasn't she?
His expression became quickly apologetic to Anai, no doubt giving the firelizard an idea to what he was going to do, or at least an attempt at a warning. Said look lasted only a moment before he stepped right up and grabbed Beka around the waist, literally throwing her over his shoulder like a bag of tubers, just as he'd threatened. Then he turned on his heel and started back in the direction of the forest's entrance, emphasizing how easily he could carry her about if he tried... not to mention his total willingness to do exactly that. If Beka wanted to be stubborn and ridiculous, he'd be happy to make sure she wished she listened to him by carrying her around. Even if she struggled and kicked, he'd still hold her, though from the angle she was at, she could probably hurt him rather badly. He'd put her in that position on purpose, though, so as to remind her that she wasn't powerless. For once, Lir actually considered his actions before taking them.
"I think I would dare. See, Anai? When yours is bad, you just have to use force to make a point. Let this be a lesson, all right? And here's hoping your pet doesn't disturb you by thrashing about. You'll help me get her to the Hatching and Touching, won't you?"

He wouldn't. Beka's mind was firmly latched onto the idea, refusing any sort of escape from it. He wouldn't dare pick her up, or at least... She hoped he wouldn't. Contenet as she was with silence, Beka found Keliris' lack of words un-nerving, like he was hiding something, or he was trying to push her away again. Well, Beka had definately had enough of being pushed away, if she was the one pushing, then well, who knew. The words were out before she thought about them, her gaze growing concerned. "Don't change the-"
The rest was cut off in a yelp as she suddenly found herself flung over his shoulders. Well, he was stronger than he looked, much stronger than she'd thought. Bolder too. Tensing for a moment, Beka shivered as fear creeped down her spine like ice, cooling every angry thought. Then she relaxed... Or more, began to squirm. Briefly she thought about pulling his hair, but that would mean relaxing the grip she had on him, and then he'd probably drop her. "Keliris! Put me down! Put me down, now!" She didn't like this, didn't like it, even though Anai assured her that nothing bad would happen.
The idea of kicking him never crossed her mind, it hadn't worked in the past, and so why would it now? Frustration over roder the shiver of fear and she squirmed again, feeling completely ridiculous with each step. She might not be willing to pull his hair, or kick him. However, if she wasn't on her feet in... Oh the amount of time it took to spell 'shards', then she'd bite him. Simple as that.
Anai had no clue as to what Hers was on about, funny thoughts, oh she found this very amusing, especially since Hers was no longer scared, but frustrated. Oh and embarrassed, couldn't forget embarrassed. Oh she didn't mind, if he was not going to hurt Hers, she didn't mind. Why was he warning her? A chirp of affirmative, Anai agreeing to get Beka to the Touching, and if she could, the Hatching. For, she was just so nice like that.
Right, that was it, enough was enough. Beka had definately had enough, her head was starting to ache, merely from thinking all curses that she could at him. Dealing with Anai's amusement, and the humiliation of being strung over his shoulder. So she did the only thing she could think of that would get him to let go. She bit him. Yep, right on the shoulder, squirming afterwards to get out of his grip. "Put me down! And you taste horrid, do you ever bathe?"

"Hmm? No. I don't think I will. You can watch behind us for anything I might not see," Keliris declared quite calmly as he continued walking, despite Beka squirming. She didn't weigh enough to bother him too much, although he did have to strain to properly hold her. She was smaller than him and he knew he could lift his own body weight, at least. He prided himself on that much due to how much effort he went to in order to remain fit, especially considering his poor health regime. Keliris ate once a day, maximum, and he did not eat right. He also didn't sleep right, which was evidenced by the perpetual black rings under his eyes. He had to work harder than the average person to match up to someone his size in strength and stamina, though speed came naturally to him. Being fast was a virtue of someone who was built small and compact. He was lucky in that respect, at least.
His grip on her remained firm as he went, not to prevent her from freeing herself but to flat out avoid dropping her. Beka did not strike him as the type of person to appreciate taking a face plant right into the dirt. Not that he knew very many people who would enjoy such rough treatment. Her squirming made it harder to hold her, though. She likely realized that, and that was why she was doing it. But if she thought he was going to just put her down because she was wiggling like a tunnelsnake, she had something else coming. Keliris was quite stubborn when he put his mind to it, and she'd unfortunately spurred said streak when she made the mistake of telling him that he wouldn't dare pick her up.
Anai's chirp earned a slight smile. He didn't know if she'd even remember her promise, but he was sure that she would remember that her person really did want to go but was too much of a wherry to do so herself. Hopefully that would be enough. However, all of his thoughts came to an abrupt and screeching halt as Beka actually bit down on his shoulder. Keliris froze and he glanced over at her before narrowing his eyes, but the expression was distinctly not a glare. In fact, he looked pleasantly amused.
"Do that again and I'll be convinced you're trying to seduce me, Beka. If you keep squirming, I might drop you on your face." Biting was probably not most people's idea of flirting, but what about Keliris was deemed normal for most people? Not very much. He prided himself on being different! That and he was betting that scolding her would have given her satisfaction; pretending (or perhaps not pretending) that he liked it was bound to make her do a double-take in confusion. "We're going back to the Weyr now. It's not exactly safe out in the jungle anyway..."

Seduce him?! Oh that was just ridiculous, even after just meeting him he should know that. For one, she didn't like him that much, for another point, Beka wouldn't know anything about seduction. Though his comment made her wonder how much he knew... And what? No, she hadn't just thought that, a trick of... Something. She hadn't just thought that, sighing with resignation, Beka attempted to push disturbing thoughts away and go for a teasing comment. "You wish."
She didn't know what to do, Anai was quite comfortable, telling hers that Keliris wouldn't hurt her, and if she stopped squirming, she wouldn't fall. However, it was humiliating to be carried in such a fashion, and Beka glared at him. "Please put me down. I'm capable of walking you know!" Beka snapped softly, letting out another sigh, this one of frustration.
Beka didn't like being carried, didn't like being hauled about like a sack of tubers, but there was nothing she could do about it. Why was it she was getting along with Keliris, the question was plaguing her. Many would say that it was simply because she was attracted to him - Which she wasn't! Beka didn't get along with anyone, she rarely let her guard drop unless it was Lura, or the time when she'd been slapped in the barracks, bringing memories back full-blast.
Anai found the situation very amusing, since she was safely nestled in Keliris' hair, chewing on some of teh strands thoughtfully, watching Hers glare at him, and notice the pink flush taht stained ehr cheeks. What did 'seduce' mean? How very odd that Hers would react so to a word that even teh very special Anai did not know.
"This is very annoying." Beka's comment was rather off-handed, her voice bored as she once mroe tried to push away from Keliris, grumbling when his grip proved to be better than she thought. And so, she grumbled, told him to put her down in the hopes that he would get annoyed and put her down. That plan failed when it served to annoy her first and she fell silent.

Keliris quirked an eyebrow, tempted to point out to her that she had no idea what he wished for. Truthfully, he greatly preferred the company of men to women when it came to lovers, not that it was much business of Beka's, or that he'd ever be as kind to tell her that. There were a few women - a handful, at best - that he would change that stance for, but she was not one of them. He didn't know her well enough to really care whether she found him attractive or not; the statement had, in fact, been pure sarcasm, based entirely around the fact that she could have done a great many things to free herself, though run the risk of hurting him. She chose not to, which fascinated Lir more than he was willing to admit, but her statement was what his mind chose to latch onto simply because he did not think she realized he was joking. Hmm, how interesting, though not out of the ordinary. Sadly, most people were unable to pick up on when Keliris was serious or joking. He just did not express himself very well. He probably should have worked to change that, but that would require far more effort than the sixteen-turn-old was willing to put forth.
Maybe it was the please, or the fact that it was hard to try and carry her through the under brush without hitting both of them with branches, tripping over roots and vines, or anything of that nature. Whatever it was, Keliris did stop and gently (with obvious consideration for her lack of balance caused by the position she was in) lower her to the ground to stand on her own. Once he was sure she could stand on her own, he dropped his hands away from her and brushed his hair smoothly out of his face, back behind his ears. He lifted the other to scratch Anai again, quite affectionately. He'd been careful not to mess with the hair she was nestled in, too.
"For future reference, I bathe quite often, but I was climbing in the trees. It's your own fault for biting where I happen to have a bunch of leaves and vines and whatever else I've gotten on me," he pointed out, calm as ever. "And I'll let you walk with me now, but don't tell me that I wouldn't carry you to the Hatching. You're going, if I have to haul you onto the Sands like that myself, and I assure you that going to the Sands will be more embarrassing since your backside will be plainly visible to everyone we pass. I, personally, have no intentions of missing it or anything else. You're coming, and that's that. I'll hear no more arguments. And it seems like Anai's on my side. Fancy that."
Scoffing, Keliris turned and started back through the foliage again, while gesturing for Beka to follow. They were close to the outskirts, which was relatively the safest part of the jungle, but that did not mean it was completely safe. "You might want to stay close. Once we get out of here, you can yell at me and stomp off in a huff, but try to keep quiet would you? I don't want to draw unwanted attention, and there have been whispers of felines coming close to the Weyr lately. We need to be on the look-out when we're in this part. That's what I meant by watching behind us." He'd been trying to keep an eye on their surroundings, too. He was paranoid, no doubt, but... paranoia kept a person alive.

Beka looked, to be honest, relieved when she was back on her own feet, shaking her head to clear it. Before glaring at Keliris, "That was not funny." The words were hissed out, Beka brushing at her clothing before glaring at Anai. The green was bonded to her, wasn't she? She was fond of Keliris, but that could just be because he was a grumpy as she usually was. Or because she was enjoying making life hard for Beka. Annoying little-
"I bit you because... Well it seemed reasonable. I didn't want to kick you, because I didn't actually want to hurt you." Beka's voice was reasonable, as though her actions were completely justified. The continuation of their previous conversation about whether she was, or wasn't, going to the Hatching, made her sigh. Would he not give up on that? She didn't think she would Impress, didn't deserve to, it was as simple as that. She didn't want to go, Stand, watch, hope, only to be mauled before being left for dead. In Beka's opinion, she had one too many a scar anyway, and dragon talons did not need to add to that.
"Why won't you let me make my own descision about the Hatching? You know, I'm completely capable of handling myself, and making decisions." Frustrated and annoyed at him, Beka didn't even bother calling for Anai and stalking off, instead following him. Perhaps that would annoy him more, she couldn't really figure out Keliris. He was confusing, hid his emotions well, but he was understandable in the same breath. Was everyone this confusing? Or was it just him? "Felines? Ouch, I won't storm off, I'm not that sort of person."
Anai merely cheeped at him, going back to chewing on his hair as though it were the most natural thing in the world. She wasn't really trying to annoy him, but it was amusing, Hers always laughed when she tugged on her hair.
Barely a glance was given to Anai in Keliris' hair, Beka knew Anai would return when she was ready, maybe she should start training her, the other flitts at the Weyr seemed well-behaved. or well enough, the most of them. So why should Anai prove that she was just as good? If a little grumpy./

"It wasn't?" Keliris inquired, the expression on his face rapidly melting into a very taunting smirk. He couldn't help it though. She seemed to be getting so very fired up and for what? Because he'd carried her about? He was under the impression there were quite a few women who wouldn't have complained about a man carrying them around. Beka would pick being one of the odd ones. (Never mind that the manner in which he was carrying her was likely more the source of her complaint than the fact that she as being carried -- Keliris could overlook that fact on grounds that she had left him no choice, and any other position would probably have earned her agitation just as quickly.) He clucked his tongue musically, then inquired, as if he honestly had no idea what she was referring to, "What wasn't funny? The fact that I can pick you up? That I dared to? Or that I picked up on your obvious ulterior motives for biting me?"
Her reasons were sound and he didn't pick them apart, not mentally anyway. His words were meant to rile her up, nothing more. There was no depth or assumption to them because he honestly believed her completely. Why would she tell him anything but the truth? While Keliris was an ultimate pessimist in regards to people's comments about him, he didn't generally assume that they were trying to deceive him unless something could be portrayed as an insult and even he wasn't illogical enough to assume that her biting him was some kind of disturbing way of saying she hoped he got eaten by a furious queen. He did have some level of sanity to him, despite how much he might have disagreed with the idea.
As for why he wouldn't let her make her own decision, that was very simple: if he forced her to go and she didn't Impress, she could blame it on him. That way if she was disappointed, it was on him, not her. That was his mindset. If she did Impress, then she could be grateful too, but at least if it wasn't on her full steam, she had no reason to blame herself. Plus, if she was there, Keliris had someone he could annoy. He didn't have very many friends and Kaliran would be too busy trying to get to the front to see everything like a wherrybrain. He wasn't going to sit and deal with that throughout the whole hatching by following his brother around. So, Beka was more appealing.
Not that he'd tell her that. "I tend to refuse to abide by people acting like wherryheads. I figure, if I encourage that, you'll keep doing it, whereas if I force you to do something you may not want to do, you'll at least learn to do the smart thing." Right, and he was resident morale official of the Weyr or something. He shook his head, swinging under a large low-hanging branch before continuing forward. "Somehow, I strongly suspect you are exactly the sort of person to storm off in a fury, Beka. Does my hair taste good?" The question was posed to Anai; he honestly did not mind her chewing on his hair one little bit. It reminded him a little of babies, actually, and he liked children much better than adults.

Beka merely stared at him, was he smirking? He was smirking, at her! She didn’t like people touching her, in any way shape or form, didn’t like even Lura hugging her. It made her flinch, made her want to pull away. And the fact that she hadn’t been able to get away from his grip had annoyed her. Made her even more cautious of him, for though he wasn’t too much taller than her, he was strong. Stronger than what she’d assumed. His question made her frown, as though he’d completely confused her, it was the opposite. “The fact you picked me up, wasn’t funny. The fact you didn’t put me down and there are no ulterior reasons!”
She let her gaze drift off, wondering all the time about him. Why was he being such a pain in the tail? It was annoying, not only that but it was frustrating. It was a great temptation to hit him, but that would jolt Anai from his hair and Beka had no desire to be scolded. Could he not accept that not all females wanted to seduce him, as he’d put it. He didn’t strike her as the arrogant ladies man type, but that didn’t mean he wasn’t. Or he could simply be riling her up, annoying her with… Well… Words. If she’d had any inkling of what he was thinking, she might have forgiven him, it was never nice to be alone. As she knew from the last Hatching, not that she’d been alone. She’d had Rielana chattering in her ear the whole time ‘look at that!’, and ‘Oh poor dragon’ things like that the whole session. It seemed that the girl never realised when she repeated herself, which was why she did it often..
“Wherry Heads? I am not! I don’t want to go for a reasonable reason.” She snapped quietly, rolling her eyes at him while trying to get Anai to leave his hair alone. Unfortunately, she’d only had the flitt a few days and was still trying to get the hang of piecing together the pictures and only succeeded in confusing the poor green. Oh well, she’d have to leave it and – What? “I won’t. Thanks, you have so much faith.” Sarcasm again.
Anai merely cheeped softly, tugging gently on the strands, she often chewed on things, she liked chewing on things and his stringy bits were better than anything else. Good, good. Fun, fun. Cheeping again, Anai got some images together, sending him images, yes she liked pulling on his hair. It didn’t taste as nice as meat, but it was fun. She wasn’t going to stop, not even if he told her to so, there. Wings flares slightly, before settling back down, taking another clump of hair in her teeth.

Uh-huh. Keliris just continued smirking. It was probably very rude of him to disregard her reaction the way he did, but then, would he have been himself if he suddenly developed a consideration streak? Really, Keliris wasn't designed to deal with people. That he'd actually put her down instead of nitpicking at Beka was evidence to the fact that he didn't completely hate her. He wouldn't have called her his friend, though; that was a term Keliris did not use often. 'Friend' to Lir meant someone he was willing to risk his life for, to defend with every ounce of his being, who he'd stand by for everything - but even his friends, he couldn't say he honestly trusted. He didn't open up and trust anyone. He did, however, grow to care about people over time just like everyone else... he was just a snarling, secretive beast on most fronts, but especially his feelings. Beka seemed like someone who aired her feelings for the world to see, but never realized that she did so. Keliris himself showed many emotions.. but his reasons for them were his own, never fully admitted aloud. People could see he was angry... they'd never know why, though.
"You don't want to go because you're afraid you really will Impress, and that will make people notice and have expectations of you - which you don't want. You strike me as the kind of person who likes to try and fade into the background. But hiding from your problems and your pain won't fix them. Ignoring a bleeding wound doesn't make it go away and over time it festers and becomes increasingly more detrimental. You tend to it now, you'll find it starts to heal."
Metaphors were pretty words, but the subtle implications in his words, Keliris hoped managed to sink through. He would not come right out and say that by hiding from people, Beka was making it harder on herself to heal, but he'd definitely imply it. She didn't seem to notice - or perhaps she simply refused to acknowledge? - that to overcome the trauma that came from being a victim, one had to make the first step. And the first step was to face one's fears. He'd never tell her to go confront her rapist, but Lir did think she should try talking to people more often, getting to know others at the Weyr. She was isolated because of fear and that wasn't good. He was isolated because of his choices. There was a difference.
Her sarcasm received a soft snort as the only response. He didn't have any faith in Beka, true enough, but it wasn't personal. He didn't have any faith in anyone. He was an eternal pessimist... who, surprisingly enough, was full of advice for others that could probably have changed his life if he listened to half of what he said. Just as he told Beka she should try and be more social, try and learn to trust again, he should have, too. Somewhere in the back of his mind, he knew that as well, but Keliris wasn't ready to make the steps it would take to care. He felt more alone than he could begin to describe, and the last thing he wanted was to be rejected. He'd never handled that well.
And Anai was chewing his hair quite contentedly, from the feel of things. Blinking back at her, Keliris snorted again, that time to avoid laughing outright. He really didn't mind it though. There were worse things. "She reminds me a little of the Weyrbrats. The smaller ones... the way they play with hair."
