Raylin sat on the hill overlooking the caravan, her arms wrapped about her knees. Ebolath was sprawled out behind her soaking up the afternoon sun. The green’s breaths where slow and rhythmic a testament to the fact that she was in fact currently asleep. The weyrling threw her braided hair back as she watched the people interact below her. It seemed as though a lot of her remaining classmates had family members here now. Family to help soothe their worries and forget about the horror that they had gone though. She had no one.
At first Raylin had allowed herself to hope that her father would have heard news of the attack and come to at least check on her. A quick examination of the caravan proved that to be untrue. It seemed her family was still bound to pretend she didn’t exist. Anger and sadness welled up in her but she stubbornly refused to cry anymore. Their was no point. She had Ebolath, why did she need anyone else? She didn’t need anyone else. The more she tried to convince herself of that fact the worse she began to feel.
Raylin had begun to distance herself from everyone. Saeo, T’rid, C’oar. She hadn’t seen any of them in weeks and planned to keep it that way. Her musings where pushed as far away from her dragon’s consciousness as possible. No sense waking her up. The poor thing worried enough without having to lose sleep over her to. Tucking her head into her arms she allowed the sensation of the wind blowing through the grass to give her some small comfort. Being alone wasn’t so bad. There were worse things in life.

Burena's mother and stepfather had come to help out the Weyr. She hadn't seen them since becoming a candidate and it was great to have a visit from her parents. She had long since gotten over any homesickness but she still missed them sometimes, and it was good to know they were safe. Burena also got to introduce them to Doc. Torton was delighted with the blue and claimed that he was going to teach Doc to harmonize with a gitar, but Burena doubted Doc would agree to it.
After a while, her parents seemed tired and Burena sent them to their quarters for some rest. As she was walking them across the weyrbowl she saw a familiar green dragon perched on the hill, and a small figure beside her. "You go ahead. I want to say hello to someone," she told Yvere and Torton, pointing them in the direction of the lower caverns. Then she started up the hill with Doc perched on her shoulder.
Burena waved as she approached, giving Raylin a sunny smile. "Hi, Ray," she said softly, speaking quietly so as not to disturb the green dragon. "How are you doing?"

Raylin didn’t even move as Burena approached instead she tucked herself tighter and mumbled. “Please…just go away. I’m fine.” Lifting her head slightly she rubbed her eyes to get rid of any hints of moisture. “Don’t you have someone else to bother?” The green weyrling frowned at the girl. In reality right now she had no intentions of playing nice and if the girl never forgave her great, that was just one more person she was responsible for hurting.
As Raylin caught sight of Doc she gave a gasp. “Get him away from me!” She yelled out loud before jumping to her feet and pointing at the fire lizard. “Send him away!” Ebolath awoke with a startled croon. Jumping to her feet she snaked her head around to bring Raylin close against her. The green regarded Burena with eyes a fixture of confusion and worry. Did this girl say something to upset hers? Please send away the little cousin. Mine does not want to see him. Vega has passed between and she has been very upset. Perhaps you came at a bad time.
In truth Ebolath only vaguely remembered the girl. She spoke because she didn’t trust hers to speak just yet. She curled her tail about her bonded’s legs and gave a soft croon. Do you want the girl to go away Raymine? I will chase her away if you do. The last comment was spoken privately to her bonded and Raylin shook her head weakly. No Ebo don’t….don’t chase her. It isn’t…her fault.

Burena's eyes widened at Raylin's blunt response. She knew Raylin was going through some hard times but she hadn't expected such standoffishness. When the weyrling lifted her head, it was obvious to Burena that she had been crying. In fact, Raylin looked absolutely miserable. Her shoulders stiffened at Raylin's next words. She never would have imagined such spiteful words to come from Raylin. She couldn't fight with the other girl when she was like this, but Burena was tempted to just walk away.
Then Raylin's eyes fell on Doc, and Burena jumped in surprise when she yelled. Doc squawked, startled and annoyed. He hadn't done anything wrong! Burena shook her shoulders, making Doc take off, and she began to back away, intending to just leave Raylin to have some time to herself. She changed her mind when Ebolath's voice entered her mind. She was startled again at having a dragon speak to her, but her expression softened when she realized why Raylin was so upset.
She sent Doc an image of leaving, with a promise of treats later, and the blue obligingly lifted off and blinked between. "He's gone," Burena said, taking a step forward again. "I'm sorry for being so tactless. Are you sure you don't want company?"

Ebolath crooned as Doc left and nudged hers ,washing a wave of reassurance over the girl as Burena spoke. Leaning her forehead against Ebolath’s soft hide Raylin spoke softly. “I’m…I don’t really want company. I won’t make you leave though. Do what you want.” The weyrling stroked Ebolath’s neck and sank down to the ground.
Ebolath crooned soothingly at Burena, but offered no further explanation, instead settling around her bonded in a semi circle and laying her head on the girls lap. The green’s eyes whirled in a worried shade of yellow and orange and she shifted her wings before drawing them closer to her body. Raylin closed her eyes against more tears and took a shuddering breath before stroking the large head in her lap. The world just didn’t know how to leave anyone alone. What was with people? Why did they insist on bothering people who didn’t want to be bothered? Anyone with eyes could see she didn’t want or need company.
“Don’t you.., didn’t your family come to see you? You should be spending time with them. They wouldn’t have come otherwise.” Raylin’s words where spoken in a bland emotionless tone and she curled her opposite hand into a fist. A part of her felt almost bad for being so blunt and unfeeling but another part of her was striving to push anyone and everything even remotely familiar away. As far away as the weyrling could.

Burena stood there, not decided yet about whether she could stay or go. On the one hand, it was clear that Raylin didn't want her here. On the other, she didn't want to just leave Raylin here to mope all day. What if she never got out of this funk? Burena wanted to help, and if she had to help by being annoying, so be it. She smiled at Ebolath's croon. At least the green wasn't angry with her, as far as she could tell.
"My family is resting for a little bit. I'll meet up with them again later," she explained. Burena wondered why Raylin wasn't with her family, but she knew it was better not to ask.
Making up her mind, she sat down and folded her legs under her. She sat a short distance away, so she could dodge the first she saw curled at Raylin's side if need be. "I'm not leaving. Look, if you keep acting like this, Benden wins in a way. At least that's what I think."

Raylin glared at Burena and curled her hand tighter so that her nails bit into her palm. Ebolath’s tail swished back and forth her eyes taking on a deeper yellow color. Before the green could warn the other girl however hers leapt to her feet. Eye’s blazing Raylin took a step towards the other girl, her whole body tensed. “Who gives a shard what you think! Where were you when everything was happening? Huh? You weren’t there! You have no right to sharding judge me! Your just like everyone else who spouts out advice. You have no clue! None at all!” The weyrling swung her hand out on front of her in a violent gesture but didn’t take another step towards Burena.
“Go away! Ok. Leave me alone!” Ebolath reacted instantly curling her tail around hers to keep her from attacking the girl, her eyes whirling in worried yellows as she crooned reassuringly to both girls. Mine, Oh Minelove. The girl is not trying to make you angry.
The green flicked a wing at Burena. Thank you for trying to speak with mine but I am afraid she has not been well. Cherilith’s says she has the depression and lately it has gotten much worse. Perhaps you should go. Just until she calms down. I am sorry. Ebolath crooned again to the girl as Raylin looked up at her green with a scowl on her face. I wouldn’t have hurt her Ebolath. I just wanted to scare her off.

Burena took a step back, startled by Raylin's anger and worried that the weyrling would actually strike her. In the process she tripped over something and stumbled, landing on her bottom. She looked up at Raylin, scared by the change that had come over her friend. She had a feeling that only Ebolath kept Raylin from hitting her.
"See? I don't know how to fight at all," Burena said shakily. Humor was her only defense in such situations. She felt a spike of alarm from Doc, but forcefully told him to stay where he was, that she would be fine. She sighed as Ebolath spoke to her again, repeating Raylin's desire to be alone.
"Fine, I'll leave you alone. But if you never need anything..." Burena let the offer hang, then shrugged and started to walk away, trying to act as if she wasn't frustrated by Raylin's refusal to open up at all.
