Though twilight had fallen the gather seemed to show no sign of slowing down, vendors still hawked their wares and haggled with customers, children still ran underfoot pursued by harried parents or older siblings, and more than a few dragons still lounged on the rocks where the warmth of the day still lingered in greater amounts than most humans appreciated. In fact to Yoalla, who had hardly been away from the Weyr since she’d left Bitra Hold, the noise was almost overwhelming. If she hadn’t had her usually timid green wher showing a bold face beside her she’d have hopped right back on Yosk and headed for home.
However because Yosk was feeling brave, or at least hiding her fear, or maybe even silly and excited like the children still running around, Yoalla forced down her own nerves and hid her fears behind the doxie’s mask she still had a tendency to hide behind. A seductive smile, a saucy sway to her hips, and, to discourage those who might take her stance and expression as an invitation she didn’t wish to make this evening, a hand resting gently on Yosk’s shoulder, all effective barriers to whatever Yoalla might be thinking.
The green and her handler found that the crowds tended to inexplicably thin out in the face of even a small wher like Yosk. The only trouble was knowing what to look at first, sure the food stalls smelled tempting, but Yoalla didn’t want to go and blow all her marks over there only to find something she couldn’t live without later on, so temptation was temporarily staved off.
Without any particular aim in mind the pair wandered around, with Yosk hanging far enough back from the stalls not to scare off their actual customers with what the wher perceived as her immense ugliness. However as it seemed they were about to pass by and miss a chance to look at a stall Yosk very much liked the green’s self control totally broke down. Making a series of high pitched chirps the wher bounded joyfully towards the toy stall, mimicking the behaviour of several children headed in that direction. For all of five bounds, then she paused and looked up, then back at her handler. The toys were up there? Oh but how was Yosk supposed to see them?
Oblivious to whatever havoc her wher’s behaviour had caused Yoalla came up alongside the green laughing. ‘I don’t think you’ll fit up there Yosk, you’ll have to wait down here, I’ll look for you.’ Yosk huffed sulkily, even though she agreed, the ways up had been inconsiderately made too narrow for a wher to conveniently ascend. How rude!
