Nephele was overwhelmed! So many bright colours at the stall she had stopped at. She had been informed that this odd weyr Gather was, in fact, a masquerade! The problem she was faced with was that she had no mask. She was wearing her old but still fairly pretty dress already. Nuoth had most emphatically told her she looked like a gold. Hah! Perhaps not that pretty but Nephele was rather pleased with the dress. It was a cheery green colour several shades brighter than Nuoth and strapless.
She was looking at some of the intricately designed half masks to match her dress. One had a very interesting design of green and white that she liked a lot. She sent the image to Nuoth to see what her green thought. Oh yes, it suited her well! It had a strap too, which would make it easier to walk around and dance later. Now to actually buy it.

The undignified sound of scuffling emerged from behind the counter as Nephele’s presence became known (courtesy of a small firelizard that twittered loudly at the greenweyrling’s arrival) and after a pause, a girl of about seventeen Turns of so in age, with bright chestnut hair done up elegantly and brown eyes peering out from behind a gold, cream, and black half-mask, popped up, fingers smoothing the front of a magnificently ruffled dress in shades of the same cream as on her mask; shoes clicked as she edged out from behind the counter, shouting in a husky voice, “Mum, we’ve a customer, I’m taking care of it!” Lips curved upwards into a perky smile and the girl touched her hair as she swept over to Nephele, touching the green-and-white mask being examined. “It’s pretty, isn’t it? I made it myself; Mum didn’t think I could but it came out lovely, I think, and it goes so well with your dress, too. Ooh, you’re pretty; I wish I was as pretty as you…” The girl tilted her head to the side, and then smiled again. “Anyway, did you want to buy it? It’s two marks, but you could haggle if you want. I got to price it ‘cause I made it, and I think it’s absolutely frightful to go higher than two marks – but those are.” She gestured towards one of the more intricately-designed masks. “Mum made that one, though.”
The small blue firelizard uttered a loud chatter and the girl turned to look at it, frowning. “I’m not talking too much Handsome. Am I? Mum says it’s my abiding fault…” She sighed, and then shrugged it off. “Just tell me if I’m annoying, okay? And let me know if you want help; there’re more masks in the back and out front, there’re some hanging up if you want to look at those.” She smiled brightly again, and then turned to pull herself up onto the counter, twitching at her dress to straighten it and touching her own mask. “This one’s my favorite, but that one’s a pretty close second, that green-and-white. It is pretty, isn’t it? I’d have worn it myself if my dress matched it…but I got the dress first and of course I can’t paint my dress.” A pity, that was; what she would have given to wear one of her own masks instead of the one she was wearing now, one that her Mum had made. Her younger sister was responsible for the plain ones, painted uninspiring, plain colors; she’d just graduated from doing those and how proud she was of her handiwork~

Nephele jumped slightly at the unexpected voice shouting from nearby. She turned to see a girl around her age wearing a magnificent dress and mask. Nephele herself preferred plainer clothes for herself but admired the dress on the other girl. The amused weyrling listened to the stall keeper talk about what was evidentally her handiwork. Nephele was decidedly impressed that the girl had made such a lovely mask. She knew she couldn't have made something even half as pretty. She giggled at the compliment from the seller. "I think you underestimate your own beauty." The girl did talk a lot though... The price came and went in the conversation so fast that Nephele just stood there with a slight grin as the other girl talked.
The weyrling was glad for the firelizard's interruption for it mostly stopped the girl from talking. She almost had a chance to jump in and buy the mask but the girl seemed to have one last thing to say before Nephele got to. "Yes, it is a very lovely mask. Two marks you said?" The girl's cheery attitude and obvious pride in the mask had secured her the full price. Nephele pulled out two marks from her pouch hidden in the sash of her dress and handed them to the girl. "Do keep up the amazing work on those masks. You have a real talent," Nephele said as she claimed the green and white mask and put it on.

Full price? The full two marks, she’d pay?!
The girl’s eyes widened in delight as she claimed the offered payment, and then she actually spun in an excess of delight before bowing to Nephele, resisting the urge to up and hug the greenweyrling. She was so – so nice! Calling her pretty and talented with it! Only the blue firelizard’s trill of warning from the counter made her stop, and the girl smoothed down the front of her dress solemnly, nodding, brown eyes sparkling from behind her mask as she tucked the two marks neatly in the little pouch they had solely for that purpose, adjusted one of the masks that had been knocked slightly askew on its perch by her twirling, and then smiled widely at Nephele. “Thanks so much! You look absolutely stunning, honestly; you’ll have boys falling over each other to dance with you – I do hope you’ll have a splendid time.” She nodded emphatically, and then swept one hand backwards to indicate Handsome. “Maybe Handsome will come dance with you, too,” she added. “Have a wonderful rest of Gather; I wish I could go dance~”
Too bad Mum needed her here, to sell things. She had a baby, Mum did, and he – Fayden – took up all of her time, and she was busy pampering him right now. So of course she had to stay and take care of the little Masquerade shop for her mum. Her little sister wasn’t reliable enough and what would the Selenitas folk do without a Masquerade stall? They barely had any masks drifting around! And her father – he was running his own stall, so he couldn’t do it either. But no matter; she was perfectly happy among the masks and dresses; she’d probably change in an hour or so just for the feel of a new dress. Oh, yes~

If Nephele's pouch felt any lighter she didn't care, for the girl's gratitude left her feeling very happy and she grinned as she watched the girl's reaction through the mask. It was a bit of a shame that the mask girl wouldn't be able to leave the stall but Nephele wished her the best of luck and a good time. She went back outside and rejoined Nuoth who assured Hers that she was the most beautiful two-legger there and surely the girl's comment about dancing - what was that, by the way? - was absolutely right.
The weyrling and her dragonet wandered around more, viewing the other stalls and wondering what she wanted to do now.

Piden strolled up after the girl with the green and white mask paid and went her own way. He had been lurking at the opposite stall, pretending to examine its wares while really waiting for a shot at the pretty mask-salesgirl. He wanted her unimpeded by other customers- he was most likely to succeed if he could get her whole attention, obviously. Dressed in dark pants and a simply cut but expensively made sandy-colored top which matched Pidesk, he pushed his dark red bangs out of his eyes and shaded them as he sauntered over, unused to being awake during the day.
"Well, hello there," he purred, leaving off 'beautiful' or 'gorgeous' in an attempt to not come on too strong. He also resisted giving her a once-over- he'd had plenty of time to do that while browsing the other merchandise, and he had generally found that talking to a girls chest instead of her face was much more likely to get him a slap than a kiss. Still, his intentions were quite clear to anyone with half a brain, although he only allowed his eyes to meet hers for a moment or two before he trailed one hand across a finely worked green and gold mask that somewhat resembled her own, appearing to peruse the merchandise.
Unfortunately, Red took this oppourtunity to make an appearance, frilling madly at the girl (Piden silently thanked his lucky stars that the girl wasn't a redhead). Unfazed, Piden allowed the green Salamandyr to climb from his shoulder onto his hand, where she curled around his wrist, hissing for all she was worth. "Oh, leave her alone," he whispered, before guiding Red under his cuff. "Sorry, she doesn't much like.... anything, really," he apologized to the salesgirl, flashing a winning smile none the less. "Anyway, I'm in need of a mask, as I'm sure you can see," he said, taking this opportunity to meet her eyes again, his deep green ones purely self-confident.

Piden was unlucky enough to enter the stall at about the same time T'san decided to actually get a costume. So he was not left alone with the pretty young stall keeper. And T'san had two things in his favour. First was the adorable little cub craddled in his arms, second was his sprained wrist. The latter might not be much use considering the brownrider had been attempting to hide it as much as possible.
Anyways. What had made T'san change his mind about a costume? It was of course the magnificent and slightly amusing costume that Ka'rys sported that had interested him in dressing up at all. However, the brownrider wasn't interested in anything quite so regal. As he entered the Masquerade Stall he spotted a young man very obviously trying to seduce the girl. The man smiled deviously. She was a pretty girl and competition only seemed to encourage T'san.
He made a show of gasping a little and trying to drag attention to himself. "These masks are very lovely," he gushed. "Did you make all of these?" T'san asked of the girl. The look he shot Piden was both challenging and somewhat amused. Shall they see who was more succesful with her?

Not a minute after Nephele had left, it seemed that another customer was interested in her wares. Eriena clasped both hands together excitedly, watching with wide eyes behind the half-face mask as Piden approached, and then entered; his greeting drew a surprisingly shy smile from Eriena. It could not be said that, excitable and hyper as she was, she wasn’t just as sensitive as any other girl. “Hi,” she started, “I’m Erie – oh!” Red’s appearance made her eyes widen, and Eriena couldn’t help leaning in slightly, curiosity prominent across her face. “It’s okay,” she added, taken aback slightly by the creature’s hissing and rocking on her feet. “Um – what is it?” The blue firelizard on the counter, Handsome, flipped both of his wings open, uttering a loud warning hiss in response. Eriena wasn’t His, but she was under his charge, was she not? Bad frilly thing. “Oh, masks,” and Eriena blinked, looking up to smile brightly at Piden, back in her element again as she bounced, thoughtfully, eyeing him critically for a moment before she gestured at the mask that he’d been…ahem, ‘examining’. “You like green? I think it’d look good on you; do you want to try it on, there’s a mirror in the b – ” For the second time, she cut herself off as T’san entered, too, and looked between the two before Handsome gave a loud chirrup.
“Um – ” T’san addressing her effectively distracted her and Eriena couldn’t help laughing slightly, shaking her head. “No, of course not – my Mum made some of ‘em, but she’s in the back feeding the baby so I’m in charge of the shop. She made the best ones. She made mine,” she explained, and indicated the mask she was wearing with one finger before she looked back at Piden, finishing her sentence, “There’s a mirror in the back, was what I was saying…over there. Um – was there anything in particular you – either of you, I mean – was looking for? Other than…a mask? A costume or anything?” Handsome rolled to his feet, giving a low trill in T’san’s direction; the blue flapped both of his wings and then settled again, eyeing both of them. He didn’t like the frilly-thing, he didn’t…and he also didn’t like that feline! At Handsome’s trill, though, Eriena caught sight of the feline (she hadn’t noticed it previously due to the fact that she’d been awfully confused) and her eyes widened as she gestured at the feline. “Oh, it’s cute,” she exclaimed. “What’s his – her? – name? Did you buy it from that little girl…?”
Easily distracted, who, Eriena? Nah.

"This is Red," Piden said, lifting his cuff slightly so that Eri-whatever could see the Salamandyr without the creature seeing her. "She's a Salamandyr, they're native to Selenitas, I think. I haven't seen them anywhere else, anyway," he explained, with a slightly worried glance at the blue Firelizard. He didn't appear to be about to pounce, however, so Piden just pulled his cuff down a little further and picked up the mask she was refering to. "I'm not sure gold's my color, but if you think it'll look good, I'll give it a try," he said, then offered his unoccupied hand to the shopgirl. "I'm Piden by the..."
He trailed off as a Brownrider entered the stall, immediately taking Eri-something's attention. Piden shot him an appraising glance- the man was about as tall as he was, with browner hair and a slightly larger build. He was attractive enough, and if not for the girl, might have been the object of Piden's affections. But he'd picked his target, and he'd see it through. Meeting T'san's challenge with a dangerous look of his own, he strolled to the back of the shop, tying the mask on behind his head. Appearing to scrutinize himself in the mirror, he was really looking back over his shoulder, watching the Brownrider's pathetic attempts with the feline.
Looking over his shoulder, he called, "What do you think? I'm not sure the green is quite right with the shirt..." before adjusting the mask, looking at the other masks nearby. "I'm really just looking for a mask to wear today, something... appropriately mysterious," he added. Obviously, Piden was very mysterious already. T'san he ignored completely, focusing all his attention on the girl.

T'san tilted his head slightly at her negative. Well he could still work with that little tidbit she had given him. He matched her laugh with a slightly cocky grin. "She left the shop in very good hands," he commented. His tone of voice made it seem like just an offhand comment. The brownrider caught Piden's return look and very nearly smirked. Yes, this could be entertaining. The girl directed the red headed man to a mirror in the back and he had a moment to...Oh maybe not. The wherhandler was very quick!
"I'm after a bit more than a mask," T'san announced. It was true directed at both people. To Piden it was a sly way of saying 'oh yeah, I'm after her too' and to the girl it meant better business. "I'm in need of a costume and a mask to match. I was thinking of something -" Cut off! He grinned about the reason. Said reason was the little cub in his arms. As if he realized he was being spoken about (or had just been surprised at the exclamation) Spice mewled.
T'san nodded at the first gender she had guessed. "Him. His name is Spice," he told her patiently. Getting a costume might take a while at this rate... "The little girl was very reluctant to give him up but eventually we came to an understanding." The next move would normally be to offer to let her hold Spice but...T'san genuinely didn't want to hand the cub over to someone before him and Spice were used to each other.

Salamandyr. She wanted one – how did she go about getting one? Eriena clasped both hands together thoughtfully, but she didn’t ask; it might be rude…were they like firelizards? Impressing? How did she get an egg, then; were they sold…? But what if they didn’t want her? Eriena wanted a firelizard too – a dragon would be even better – but she couldn’t get either; her household didn’t have enough to pay for a flitter egg (Handsome’s egg had been stumbled upon by accident, the rest of the clutch savaged by tunnelsnakes) and a dragon would mean leaving her family and she couldn’t do that: She had a duty to them. Eriena spun from one customer to the other as they went about their respective tasks; a brilliant, delighted smile for T’san’s compliment (wait till her mum heard that! She’d been so agitated, afraid the store would fail) and then, in response to Piden’s explanation of what he was looking for, Eriena scrunched her nose thoughtfully. “Something liiiiiike…” Her head turned to listen to T’san’s explanation of the feline kitten even as she rummaged through masks, until she plucked out up that she liked and shuffled back to Piden, offering it to him.
A silvery-gray, half-face mask, plain in the shape but not so in color. The gray shifted from dark to light unpredictably, swirls curving across its surface, and a music note in pitch black was drawn just beside the left eye – an intricately-designed creation, to be sure. “This?” she finished her sentence, head cocking curiously at him, before she half-turned to look at Spice and wiggle her fingers in a ‘hello’ gesture at the kitten. “Hiii, cutieeee~” Handsome flapped both wings again and gave a loud disapproving chirp before the blue huffed quietly and flipped his tail in agitation. Eriena should, he’d decided, be leashed. Just for his sanity. “But…costume ‘n mask, you said…? Hmm, mm…what were you looking for? Like, something regal? Or something funny, or just a pretty costume…?”

Piden almost stopped his jaw dropping at the mask the shopgirl pulled out, and then realized it might help his cause. Especially with the meddling brownrider there, distracting her with sales and trying to seduce her with the stupid pet. So he let his lips part in a little 'o', his eyes widening in not totally exaggerated awe. "Why...." he said, allowing his words to trail off a bit- he had to one-up the Brownrider's comment about the masks being lovely, after all- "This is beautiful! Is it one of yours?"
Piden's mind was pretty much made up. The silver mask really was beautiful, and appealed perfectly to his sense of simple elegance. He'd never been particularly into music, but that had more to do with the fact that he hadn't been able to get much training than anything else. His voice was passable, although Piden was convinced that he could have been a Harper if his family had ever managed to get him off the farm. This was not really the case, but what did this girl know about his past?
So, lowering his voice, he murmured, "You know, I could have been a harper... you really have an eye for matching people to masks, don't you?" Of course by this time, Eriena was no doubt distracted again as she was certainly picking out something for T'san, so Piden lifted the mask to his face, tying it on comfortably behind his head. "How much for this one?" he called over his shoulder, still admiring the mask (read: himself) in the mirror from all angles.

The battle for Eriena's attention was amusing the brownrider. The smile she flashed him nearly made him turn a gloating expression to the wherhandler. He settled for smiling back and stroking Spice gently. her body language suggested that she was listening to him despite looking for just the right mask for Piden. She let the wherhandler see the mask she had picked out before turning her attentions back on T'san and his feline cub. Spice couldn't resist the finger wiggle. He tried rather unsuccesfully to squirm out of T'san's arms so he could pounce the wiggling fingers.
T'san chuckled at the cub's reaction. "I think he likes you," he told her. While he considered her question he heard the wherhandler complimenting the mask. Wouldn't it be so disappointing for Piden if that turned out not to be Eriena's work? "Hmm, not regal," the man answered at last. He needn't upstage Ka'rys. "Maybe something more rogue-ish like...like that!" His exclamation was accompanied by his pointing. The costume he indicated looked simple but T'san could easily imagine himself wearing it. A button up, simple white shirt with long, cuffed sleeves was paired with a dark brown leather vest. The pants were a thick cotton dyed medium blue. Leather overpants the same colour as the vest covered the entire front and back of the legs but had a triangular slit on the outer side of the leg. They also did not cover the crotch area or butt, much to the brownrider's amusement. A pair of black boots with a curious metal, spinning star on the back heel and a dark brown cowboy hat were the obvious matching accesories to the outfit.
Yes, that would do very nicely indeed. Also likely to cost him quite a bit out of his pouch but...why not? "Is there a half mask that goes well with that costume - and how much is it?" T'san was determined to get that costume, even if he had to haggle a bit. Not regal like Ka'rys' costume but it had a charm all its own. After the Gather it was likely to become a chew toy for Spice. So much leather.

It was hard attending to two customers at once, Eriena noted (with some delight; wouldn’t her sister be jealous?); some part of her wished that she’d help. Handsome wasn’t any help at all; the blue firelizard didn’t seem to care a whit about the running of the stall – he just liked scolding her. And Iana was busy with Mum and Mum was busy with the baby. Hm. Regardless, Piden’s response to the mask made Eriena smile brightly. “I’m glad you like it, but it’s not mine, not really. I mean, I painted it, but it’s Mum’s design. She just couldn’t actually do it ‘cause the baby.” Hmph, baby…that was how Eriena thought of her baby brother: ‘the baby’. Not a brother and not a sister and not anything but a baby that squirmed and made noise and gave her the opportunity to run the shop all by herself for the most part. She wasn’t quite sure if she liked the baby or not, yet.
“Oh!” was her reply to T’san’s pointing out the costume, and Eriena rotated to stare at the costume in question. “Okay! Ummm, mask…let me see…” As she took the costume off the hanger and handed it to T’san, Eriena moved as rapidly as she could towards another rack of masks, glancing happily at Piden. “Were you ever trained as a Harper?” she inquired (more than out of politeness, too; she was curious!). “I mean – do you play gitar or anything?” Maybe playing gitar was a stereotype; Eriena didn’t notice. “Why didn’t you? Become a Harper, I mean; you said you ‘could have been’? And that one’sssss…one and a half marks~” One of the cheaper masks, it was.
“Is this mask okay?” she added without pausing for breath as she whisked back to T’san and presented him with a half-mask. It was the same blue shade as the pants in the costume, edged in a thin leather, and white marked the mask, accented by the brown of leather. “There’re others, but I think this one goes best – color-wise, anyway, but if you don’t need it to match absolutely, there are – yeah, others, just so you know…” Her head tilted to one side as she raised the mask up at face level for T’san. “This mask is one and a half marks too, and the costume’s three and a half. So…that’d make – what, five marks total?” She was no good at math, more’s the pity; girls didn’t need to know math too often and Eriena was too excitable, too energetic, to do well in any confined classroom.

Still admiring the slivery mask against his tan and dark red hair, Piden smiled over his shoulder. "Well, your mother's design or no, if it was your hand that painted it, you deserve the credit. And it truly is a work of art," he replied. Possibly he was over-flattering, but what girl didn't like to be told her work was beautiful? For that matter... "In my eyes, the only thing that rivals its beauty is you," he added, dropping to one knee in a humourously earnest parody of a Harper caught up in the midst of some love tale. He reached out to catch her hand and kiss it...
No luck. The Rider and his stupid feline had her attention again, but luckily she'd turned before she saw him stupidly stick out a hand. Hopefully T'san hadn't seen either, but just in case he had, Piden pretended he'd dropped a mark, scuffing around vaguely on the ground while the other two dealt with T'san's costume. The scowl for T'san changed to a smouldering grin as soon as he knew the older Rider had seen, and he straightened just as she turned her attention back to him. Lounging smoothly back against a mask rack, Piden fiddled idly with one of the ribbons as she spoke. The happy glance earned her an even more alluring smile, Piden glancing up from under his long lashes. "Oh no, never trained. My family were cotholders, and couldn't spare me from the farm. But the Hold's harper" and here started the lies: "Said I had the best soprano he'd heard from a boy my age. Unfortunately my voice changed before my parents could raise the money to sent me to the Hall," he finished, just as she found the mask she was looking for and rushed back to T'san. Speedy little thing, this Eri-girl was.
One and a half marks was more than reasonable, though. He didn't have too many marks left after two years of self-imposed exile, but certainly enough for that. Piden dug two out of his pocket, and once she was done (or at least mostly done) with the Rider, headed in her direction again. Pressing them both into her hand, he pulled her close enough to speak quietly, so T'san couldn't hear. "Keep the change, gorgeous. Get yourself something pretty, as if you need it. If you can get away at all today, I'll be hanging around the Dancing Square," his eyes inadvertantly flicked to the Rider, meeting T'san's eyes, before dropping back to Eri-something's, "And I'd love a dance." With a final triumphant glance over her shoulder at T'san, Piden released the girl, put on his mask, and left the shop.
However, instead of heading for the Dancing Square or the food or something, Piden ducked around the side of the stall across the way, waiting for the Rider to come out. He wasn't trying to be creepy, he just wanted to meet the man who'd given him such a run for his money.
