Not even noon time yet and the Southern sun was beating down relentlessly. The very faint breeze not even a tad bit refreshing. To people unused to the heat it could make them lazy and unwilling to work. Those who had been born or had been South long enough found it a minor annoyance, a fact of everyday life that had to be worked around or nothing wopuld ever happen. The young woman appearing from the path to the coast north of Pern's only southern weyr was somewhere between the two groups. While able to work it didn't mean she was entirely quick at it or even all mentally there. A break had seemed in order, jsut as long as she made sure to be back for the lunch meal.
So it was that the new candidate girl found herself staring out at the sea, the waters a sparkling blue expanse before her. A sweet trill sounded from behind her as a positively handsome young flitter fluttered then swooped past his bonded human, positively delighting at how the sun made him shimmer and shine. How could anyone not notice him? The prideful, vain thoughts reached the girl and she rolled her eyes. He was such a silly little fellow. She had Impressed him at what she was learning to call The Basket of Basket Cases Hatching. Still, she was glad for the companion.
Nephele, for that was her name, strode closer to the water. As she did her (literally) sweet-looking flitter landed on her shoulder and offered her the gift clenched in his little claws. He crooned at her. Wasn't his gift perfect, just as he himself was? Didn't it match her beauty well too? "You little rascal," she laughed, taking the shell and shooing him off. He made an arrogant little chirp, satisfied that his treasure hunting had worked well to his advantage, before jumping off her shoulder to fly about in the sky again.
The brunette had no real desire to bring the little shell back to the barracks with her but she held onto it for the moment, not wanting to annoy the brown. She was still learning about his little quirks and traits. Instead she took off her shoes, put her socks and the shell inside them, and rolled up her pants. She wasn't sure how far she'd walk so she picked up the shoes and started walking along the shore, salty water lapping at her feet.
Charming flew circles around her, starting around her head and slowly making his way downwards. She kicked out a bit as a silent warning and he squawked at her. He fluttered a little further out over the water and made a splendid little air dive. He burst out of the water all sparkling-like and his thoughts seemed mischievious. His cheeks apepared...chubby. Nephele realized his intentions and started running down to coastline, followed by her chocolate coloured flitter intent on getting her wet. What an odd sight.
