Humans:
Name: Raylanne
Age: 28
Gender: Female
Sexual Orientation: Heterosexual (open?)
Rank: Watchrider, Senior Journeyman Healer
Turnday: June 4, 2995
Physical Appearance:Raylanne has dark auburn hair, to the eye its mainly brown but the reddish tint to it is generally obvious in direct light. The longest layer of her hair falls just past her shoulders and has a slight wave to it, though its not rare for her hair to give up and be straight. She has bangs, they’re just long enough to tuck behind her ear and short enough that they don’t really bother her when they hang in her face. Even so, she tends to do push them back only if she has her hair up. Raylanne has light blue eyes, framed by thick eyelashes and thin eyebrows. Small dainty lips are a stark contrast to her square face and strong jaw. Yet somehow, she pulls off femininity with an unexpected grace. Most of the time, Raylanne looks stern or quizzical if she doesn’t have a smile on her face. Which leads to the, don’t judge a book by its cover cliche. A little taller than the everyday woman, she stands with bare feet at 5’7“. Which, she thinks is the perfect height. She has an average bust size and a small waist, which means nothing really va-va-va-voom in the curves department. Thanks to her height she has long legs and because she’s conscious of her over all health, is generally lean (yet healthy) in appearance. Rayanne is fair skinned and has a small smattering of light freckles around her body.
This Journeywoman dresses to impress… herself. Phaw, to those who always cater to the fashion ideals of other people! She rarely wears skirts or dresses unless it’s a special or social occasion, preferring the maneuverability of trousers since she’s almost always on the move. When she’s working, Rayanne wears things that she’s less likely to care about being stained, ripped, muddied, covered with decomp and all around messed up. Once a blood stain sets in, there is no way she’s ever getting it out. While on the other hand, she simply adores jewelry. She has more shiny things to wear than she has clothes, or shoes, or jackets. And most of the jewelry comes in matching sets, and almost all of them can be interchanged with at least one other set and still match. What she doesn’t tend to wear though, is rings. She always has to take them off to work and it becomes quite a nuisance, so she just doesn’t wear them. Why risk loosing one in a patient, eh?
Personality:Raylanne is mathematically and scientifically brilliant, which is why she excelled in the most intricate of the craft halls, though it may be in part due to her almost photographic memory. But there is a down side. Socially, she is incredibly awkward. Rayanne has trouble bringing other people’s emotionality into the social equation, thus often comes off as being harshly blunt. She doesn’t mean to offend, because obviously her statements come from logical conclusions, but never the less she does. Most of the time Rayanne will need someone to bring those hurt feelings to her attention, otherwise she won’t realize or understand the need for an apology. Despite this, don’t mistake her social unawareness as the lack of emotion, because she has plenty of those, and she expresses them when she feels like it. In fact, she’s completely open about her sexuality and uses sex as a social connection more often than a romantic one. Though they aren’t mutually exclusive. Raylanne occasionally gets frustrated when people can’t keep up with her thought process, forcing her to slow down and use common pernese rather than the technical jargon she‘s used to spouting.
She is a scientist first, profiler second and a woman third. Its easy for her to become detached and observational when it comes to death or other unpleasant things, if only because she has a sort of fascination with it. Its why she got into the bone business in the first place. Murder and injuries are like a puzzle that needs to be solved, and most of the time she can do it, fitting everything just by the clues given to her by the bones. Tough, because she has to be , Raylanne isn’t someone who can be pushed around by words or physically if she can help it. Insults are taken lightly then tossed to the winds, that is their opinion and she knows better than to take them to heart, and fights generally end up with the other in a pin with the risk of a dislocated joint. She doesn’t enjoy fighting, but when she does she aims for a generally peaceful surrender rather than a knock-out-cold one.
History:
2995 - 3003
In some kind of strange twist of fate, Raylanne was born a Turn before the war started. Her mother Lanenai and her father Zorray were supportive of Fort’s decision to take Benden’s eggs so that the Weyr would be able to survive. They weren’t so keen on the war, but what could you do? Some sacrifices had to be made. Not like they’d have much to do with the whole thing anyway, Zorray was an experienced Holdsguard and Lanenai worked as a weaver and occasionally as an assistant healer. Either way, they did what they could to help the campaign. When Raylanne was two, her sister Zoeyani was born and when she was four, along came her brother Lanzo. At the time she almost wished her brother hadn’t been born, now he’d be the heir and she’d be nothing but a pair of hands to help the family. The Turns rolled by but she was still to young to comprehend why everyone was so angry all the time, no one ever made sense when they tried to tell her why that was. She’d always had a question that would trip up the most simplified responses. When she turned eight, Raylanne had finally managed to get a grasp on what had everyone on edge. Fort stole Benden’s Dragon eggs because they wouldn‘t give them a Queen, and Benden got angry at Fort so now everyone is fighting. It was also in her eighth turn that her parents bundled her up and sent her to the Healing Hall for training. Despite being bright, the little girl was hard to handle and they just didn’t know how to deal with her uniqueness.
3004 - 3010
At the Hold, Raylanne hadn’t made any friends, but at the Hall she was able to make one who understood and could see through her social awkwardness… Angina also knew how to bounce back quickly from unnoticed slights the other girl might make by accident. They both had only been there for a year before Thread fell, causing eventual mass chaos in the Hall as riders from both sides were injured and sent there. Raylane could do little more than fetch things for the masters or prepare bandages, but she was more than happy to do so. The stress of the situation kept her motivated, which kept her moving about every which way as she offered her services to any Master or Journeyman that needed it. 3006 came and went, unloading a Senior Apprenticeship on the young girl, who immediately began to take an interest in the bones and muscles of the human body. She was fourteen when all the hullabaloo started down in the South, but she really could care less, true to her craft her allegiances were as neutral as a young teenager can manage. She was fifteen when she walked the tables, she picked her specialty (bones) and began basic training in mind healing. Unfortunately she also had to listen to her siblings and parents squawk about the murder of the Fort Weyrleaders, obviously she wasn’t as obsessed over Fort as her kin were. Sure the Weyrleaders had been doing a good job, but someone else could and would take over. You never know, they could be a lot better than the other set. She was more interested in the fact Elaira skipped out of town and went to establish High Reaches. All the Healers knew of High Reach Hold’s addiction to drugs, and she wondered if those Riders will be influenced by what their namesaked Hold would have to offer. When Benden attacked Selenitas Rayanne didn’t get to help treat the Benden Riders who got transferred to the Hall for healing, and continues to think the healer separation rule is silly. If anyone was unbiased it was definitely her!
3011 -3014
In 3011, the young Journeywoman started a research paper on the physical appearance of weapon marks on bones, with an emphasis on killing blows. She asks the Hall for a temporary transfer to Fort Weyr so she could exploit their research prospects. In 3012, she helps the Weyrhealers with their wounded, and is more amused than anything that J’lorin turned up at Benden as the new Weyrleader. Though when the regime changed into R‘anatar’s hands, Raylanne didn’t like how Fort seemed to be taking a tailspin. In 3013 she gets transferred back to Healer Hall, but doesn’t stick around very long and goes wondering from Hold to Hold to continue her research. Because Riders and Holdfolk often had vastly different accesses to weapons, and she wanted a holistic view rather than a specified one. Eventually, news of High Reaches gets around, for a while it made her glad she had transferred before her name could be put to any of that, even if it was by association. Her prediction of the drug use was validated too. Raylanne continued on with her field research for about another Turn, becoming quite adept at profiling along the way.
3016- 3018
In 3015, Rayanne goes back to Healer hall, vaguely annoyed with the news that Selentias had fallen to a Benden Exile attack, for she had been thinking of going to visit the Healers down there. She was 21 when she finally finished her research paper, presenting it to the Masters to look over and hopefully accept. When it was, she was asked to walk the tables again and become a Senior Journeyman. For the next Turn, she stayed at healer hall, furthering her understanding of diseases that could warp or disfigure bones. Though she occasionally is called out to Holds all around the Fort territory if they needed clarification on how or why someone died, though most of these were usually under mysterious circumstances. In her spare time Rayanne helped teach apprentices at the Healer Hall, but only those who were interested in bones and ligaments. In early 3017, she requested another transfer, this time to the Southern Continent. She felt like she needed more training in the generalized Healing field to supplement her specialized work. The Journeywoman rotated between Holds every few weeks, so she didn’t develop any specific attachments to certain people, she was doing field work after all. Rayanne was at Hyphen when the skirmish between the Exiles and the Sweep Riders broke out. And when the Earthquake hit she was in Southern Hold, though they didn’t feel much of the effects, a few waves from the aftershock perhaps but that’s all. Immediately she chose to head out to Selentias Hold, and when she got there, she helped the Hold’s healers with their patients. It was there she found out that Selenitas Weyr had been practically destroyed and that, not long after, the two Weyrs had reunited. Rayanne stayed with Selentias until they didn’t need her services any more. In fact she was on her way for a second visit to Blossom when a particularly large shadow passed over her head…
Life at the Weyr was... well... interesting to say the least. It was by far much different than the life she had been used to. It was also very... sedentary... and hidden. After having traveled for so long between the different Holds, staying in a place for longer than a month felt, to descibe it the best, weird. Also, lessons, they weren't something she enjoyed to the fullest of her abilities. They were unique, but she was far more facinated by humans than she was their dragonic partners.
In July of 3018, Nitrath's maiden clutch hatched. She watched as the very first, and very small blue made his ungentle journey through the candidates and he was about to pass by her when he spoke.
Wait. You. She watched as the little one flopped down at her feet. One does not simply come to a hatching expecting not to impress. That said, I can't help but admire your particular brand of brain. She was about to retort that she knew perfectly well that by coming she had a chance to Impress, but she didn't get a chance to speak. I am your Adanth, and you are Mine, Raylanne. I ask only for the strength and the chance to defend you from your enemies.
From that point on she was Raylanne of Blue Adanth. Most of the final battles happened while they were still in Weyrlinghood, much to Adanth's dismay. He was a fighting Dragon, not a sit down and wait it out because he was too young Dragon. Needless to say, Adanth didn't make very many friends during his first few turns. But, he did grow... a lot. Unlike his brothers and sisters, Adanth continued to shed skin and get larger.
3020-3023
Because she had a Craft and because she was now a Rider attached to a Dragon, she and Adanth were forced to move to a Hold. Which was quite a disappointment because she was working on a new thesis about wartime and the medical practices in Weyrs and staying at a Weyr to finalize the paper would have been ideal... she supposed in the end that it was possible to finish it at a Hold, though it would be much harder. At the very least she got to choose, and choose she did, with much input from Adanth. He wanted to go somewhere where he would be best put to use and where she could also be busy outside their Watchrider duties, and enforcing law in Bitra sounded like the perfect idea. And his could work with the Healers AND the Lawmen when it came to wounds and murders. Lets just say it gave Raylanne headaches... but it also gave her unlimited sources for research papers, many of which she sent in to the Healer hall for review.
Eventually they fell into a pattern, though it was a tough and troublesome road. At the very least, Bitra inhabitants treated her a slightly better than the Riders who stopped by from Inverness whom they disliked. Because as far as they were concerned, Raylanne and Adanth belonged to them, even if they interupted schemes and other shady things every once in a while.
Barbarian Blue
Bonded To: Raylanne
Name: Adanth
Age: 5 (July 3018)
Color: Blue (123456), Markings (548282)
Appearance: At hatching, Adanth will be quite small, the smallest of his clutch, actually. Were his hide pale rather than dark he would be a perfectly normal White Dragon, but he isn't white at all. Quite the opposite, actually; he's a kind of slightly greyish navy, the color of dark blue jeans. It's a matte color, not especially shiny but not greying either, marked with a grey-green tone that looks somewhat like old, dried ichor. This shade forms a tight circle halfway up his long neck, touches his snout and the tip of his tail, and forms nine rings around fingers and toes. So: certainly not a white.
That will become more apparent as he grows... and grows... and grows. At first, he will grow as fast as any dragon, building his puny 5-foot hatching size into a smallish-green-sized 20 feet over the course of his first two turns. But then, when his siblings have all leveled out and reached their adult size, Adanth will keep growing. It will taper off as he gets older, but the blue will never actually stop getting bigger; eventually he'll pass up all the blues and even some of the browns and bronzes in sheer length. If he lives long enough, he could even grow big enough to theoretically chase Queens. Unfortunately, it cannot last: eventually he will simply grow too large to get in and out of the Weyr, and his legs and wings will be unable to carry him. At that point he will suicide, dropping off his ledge to go between, with or without his rider. Life will become simply impossible. Luckily, this tragedy is very, very far in the future; Adanth will be within the normal range for a Blue for at least 10 turns.
Other than this genetic oddity, Adanth is a normal enough dragon. He's certainly not pretty; muscular, yes, but his muscles are thick and ropy and bulky, even when he's a baby. Every piece of him will appear compact, even when he reaches Queen sizes. His form is practical, not pleasing, and there will be a straightforwardness and economy to his movements that he will never lose. Why pull a barrel roll when a simple bank will accomplish the same thing? Why curl up into a circle when a flop works just as well? Why try to impress a female when you can simply take her out of the sky? This economy will translate to battle, too, where Adanth is brutally efficient. He is likely one of the strongest and most powerful of his siblings, with a kind of instinctive ability that lacks only pure bloodlust. He will kill if he must, and he will do it well, but he would rather not. Unless His is in danger.
Personality: At first, Adanth seems nearly impossible to like. He's brisk and coarse, arrogant even as a tiny hatchling, and fond of making lewd comments especially in the hearing of stuck-up females, Queens, and prudish males. He enjoys getting reactions, good or bad, and will provoke those who allow themselves to be needled to no end. Once people get to know him, though, those traits begin to melt away. Many dragons and people will appreciate his straightforward approach to everything - there is not a manipulative bone in his body - but just because they think they are his friend will not protect them from the sort of abuse Adanth doles out in spades, to friends and enemies alike, although he may abuse them with a touch more humor than his enemies. He likes having things, both material and immaterial; females, trinkets, company, attention (good or bad)... if you can have it, Adanth wants it. On the surface, it seems to be pure greed, for he rarely seems to actually do anything with what he has. He's a hoarder at heart, and his ledge will always be a mess, no matter how cleanly His might be. Try to clean up or throw away his horde and you will be met with an incredibly angry blue dragon who won't pull his punches, although he would never actually lay a finger on His. All in all, not a great collection of personality traits, although the dragon himself is far more often warm and gruff with friends and wingmates than particularly difficult to be around.
This desire to have applies to females, too. Used to taking what he wants, Adanth is a force-catcher, and only the most well-loved of females will be spared this treatment. It isn't unusual for him to be damaged and savaged in flights, by the rising female or by her other chasers. Adanth won't mind; to him, if he loses the girl and doesn't have at least a scrape, he's doing it wrong. Ichor doesn't bother him (actually, sometimes it seems to delight him, especially if it makes someone else uncomfortable), and he won't hesitate to shed it if circumstances call for it.
It's all for a reason, though. Adanth has a hard time committing to anything and giving his loyalty, but once he has, he will literally do anything for that person (or place, or thing). His is, of course, the first thing he will commit to, and everything he does is for His; this will be made abundantly clear, as Adanth treats his with a kind of delicate and loving (and borderline obsessive) respect that seems very at odds with his sometimes abrasive personality. If he's building a horde, it's because His might eventually want or need one of those things, and Adanth wants to prepare for that day. If he's out making enemies, it's because he wants to know ahead of time who he can trust - and who he can't. If he is trying to win a female, it is because His is obviously the best mate for Hers, and it is Adanth's duty to prove that. Of all of his siblings, he will have the most in common with those that seek to command, and will be very easily influenced by bronzes (sometimes in negative ways). He is loyal to a fault, and will discard any sense of morality and ethics if he must to acquire something for those he loves. He's also very literal in his interpretations; his rider had better watch what they idly dream of, because Adanth will immediately attempt to procure it. "I wish I could hold the moon in my hand" is a particularly bad thing to say to this Blue
