The boy's head was swimming. He wasn't sure if it was the pain, or the shock from impression, or maybe from the shock of seeing his friend hurt, but he wasn't able to process everything that was happening. Kaiusk was still pressed against him, crooning with anxiety into his ear. She could probably tell things were going from bad to worse for her new handler, and Sensk's anxiety wasn't helping things much. Sure, Kaius wouldn't be able to tell what the blue wher was thinking, but by the way he had glued himself to Sena and by the way he was practically in the girl's lap, it was probably adding to his own. Kaiusk probably would have gone over to the blue to comfort him if she hadn't been nursing her own handler. The best she could do was press a surge of hopefully soothing emotion into his mind. Your handler will be fine, it said, and she tried to flood his entire mind with the emotion. The menders here are very good at what they do. How could she know that? She was just a newly hatched wher, she didn't, but she was really trying to make him feel better. You might be hurting her more than you're helping by being so clingy. She is very injured. The gold crooned lightly, not trying to make him feel bad, but trying to make him see that the healers could get to Sena better if he backed up a little.
Kaiusk herself saw the wisdom from this and uncurled herself from Kaius' form as Serissa approached. Crooning lightly to the healer, she sat down a few paces away, ignoring the growing pang of hunger in her gut. When you are well, I expect you will feed me post haste, mylove. I am terribly hungry. The boy made some unintelligible grunt, dropping his head to the ground as Serissa came over. He hadn't planned on impressing a wher at all, but here he was, with a gold no less. The irony of that was palpable. Still, he wasn't sure how well he was. " 'm fine." He said in response to Serissa's questions. His voice was low, the words said mostly under his breath, but then, " No, dizzy..." He said at last, the words clipped. He wondered how he could be dizzy lying flat on the ground. " Lightheaded." He thought he might be losing too much blood and put a hand on his wound. Head lifted, the blonde healer swimming before his eyes. " Sena first, she..." Then he noticed Sydney, and the teal wher sitting next to her. A grin broke out on his face. " Yay, Syd. Now we can wreak havoc together."
That's the most he was able to say before his head hit the ground again and he passed out. Kaiusk creeled and padded over, nudging his head. Oh, please wake up, mine. This isn't good at all. Another hunger pain rippled through her gut, but she wasn't going to go eat, not without her handler, and especially not when he was sleeping like this.
The only cause of hesitation Saphor had at the moment was their daughter. No matter what was happening, she wasn’t sure if she wanted Phaiden seeing them like this. Eyes sought the form of the blonde girl almost as soon as Piden pulled her into him and she was pleased when she was the girl busy ogling the newly hatched whers with their father to pay attention to them. Plus, it was dark where they were. People weren’t likely to see them here unless they were specifically looking for Piden.
When she felt some of the pressure of his grip ease, she wondered if she got to him. The girl dropped her hand, running her fingers instead over the back of his hand lightly, contemplatively. She had wanted to get to him, true, but she wasn’t so sure she precisely liked the idea of offending him. Somehow, truly offending someone like Piden seemed wrong. “ It’s difficult for someone not to like you more than is necessary.†She said, her voice quieter this time. Maybe she was drudging up more of the pain from her youth. Of him leaving. Raising Phai alone. This wasn’t right. She shouldn’t just pretend that what he did was perfectly fine. Just boys being boys her ass.
But then he had recovered from her jab and things were darker. Her stomach did flipflops when she turned and saw his face. Blue eyes searched his features, caressing them, and she found herself wondering how something that felt so good, how he, could be wrong at all. It was so easy to be caught up in his eyes, swept away by that look. It was intoxicating. She wasn’t even thinking about the hatching anymore. Screw the whers. It was true. Phaiden wouldn’t even know they were gone. Forgetting her earlier hesitations, she tilted her head forward and caught his mouth in a kiss.
Whatever. Principles could wait until later.
