Humans:
Name: Priya
Age: 17 turns
Gender: Female
Sexual Orientation: Heterosexual
Rank: Candidate
Physical Appearance:
Priya stands at the average height of 5'5'' and has the average body. She's considered a light weight for her height, often mistaken for being underfed despite the fact that she'll grab about every in sight when she visits the kitchens. She'll blame her family's wonderful genes for having such a fast metabolism. Priya has a simple body shape with gentle enough curves and lightly defined hips. She's lacks any sort of exotic look but overall, has been complimented enough by the boys. Beside her body, she has quite a lovely face. Priya has a round shape for a face, coming to a rounded, lightly defined chin. Her skin is a lighter shade than most girls due to the fact she spent a lot of her time curled over old skins, learning as much medical knowledge as she could from them. She has started to regain some nice color when her Master forced her outside to study plants and gather helpful herbs.
Her most outstanding feature which gets her the most attention is her blonde hair. In bright lights, it almost look platinum. In average light however, her hair is a slightly darker shade of blonde. She's always kept is long, letting it run down past her shoulder blades and very rarely, past the middle of her back. It's incredibly straight, making her envious of the girls with wavy or curly type hair. Priya at work, it hardly ever seen with it down. She likes to coil it up into a bun so it does not get in her way. Seeing as how she rarely ever leaves her studies, most people are surprised by it's length when she does let it down.
Fashion wise, Priya has none. She has never been a one for fancy dressing as it causes attention. The girl is so shy towards people and her own looks, that she often wears loose, dull colored clothing that hide her pleasing curves and drive away attention. Her favorite attire on a "dressy" day would probably include a plain blouse and a comfortable skirt. She's never been in a dress before and would probably hide in the corner for fear of showing that much skin. What can she say, she's very conservative.
Personality:
Often called her Hold's little mouse, Priya is as far from social butterfly as you can get. She seems to be constantly nervous around large groups of people or in new places. She can get herself worked up so much that she will have anxiety attacks, making her bolt for the nearest corner or door to get away. Other times she will freeze, curl in on herself, and is almost impossible to shake her out of it. It's safe to say she's not much of a talker and will often stumble over her words or not even speak should someone manage to pin her down for a conversation. Priya has a very expressive face to make up for what she doesn't say and has a nasty habit of biting her nails or running her fingers through her hair when she's nervous.
She is a creature of habit and likes things to remain the same. Any sort of change will spin her little little world out of control and it often takes some time for her to readjust. She lives her life doing the same tasks every single day without a sign of being bored of it. She becomes extremely hesitant if someone tries to break that schedule and she'll almost always pass down the chance to do something different. Priya can even be considered paranoid at times. She has an irrational fear of people and always thinks there's a hidden agenda behind every conversation with her.
Priya is obviously not a follower. She doesn't even want to be part of the group at some points. She keeps to herself and her tiny world. However she does have a great interest in watching people. You could say she's envious of how easily they act amongst their fellow peers and is always hoping she can find that answer for how to break out of her own shell. Besides people, she loves studying just about everything. This was her main reason to began learning the healer craft. Despite her failure at being social, Priya is actually an incredibly bright girl. She adores taking things apart and finding out just about everything. She made her Masters happy during her stay at the HealerHall because of her obsessive need to be liked and satisfy people. She is a perfectionist, reading, adjusting, and carefully replicating everything she is taught. As such, she often has her head buried in books for most of her waking life so that she can do her teachers proud.
So what is she actually like if you get past the paranoid, skittish, and bookworm of an apprentice? Priya is a very nurturing person. She wouldn't be interested in becoming a healer if it weren't for that. With a need to be accepted, helping people just seemed like the best way to get approval. She also loves to sing, though never having a strong enough voice to join the harpers. She's also incredibly naive about a lot of things. The further depths of her personality can only be discovered when she finally decides to break down some of her protective walls.
History:
Her anxiety about people often has people scratching their heads when they hear her background. Priya is just one of eight children, being the second oldest daughter and child. She had one older sister, four younger sisters, and two younger brothers. It's safe to assume she's quite comfortable around young children and knows how to run a household while her mother had to tend to other responsibilities.
Priya was born to a tiny hold not far from Blossom Hold. Her family along with their expanded friends and relatives were a dedicated farming community. Not only did they raise livestock but they also supplied themselves and the various other smaller holds with crops. Because of the large amount of work and products expected from them, Priya and her oldest sister were put in charge of watching the hold's children. She became proficient in taking care of little scraps and cuts, soothing scared children until they were assured that they weren't dying from a little fall. Her family credits these younger years for developing her desire for the healer craft.
Because she was raised in such a close knit community of all family, anything from the world outside her bubble came as a nasty shock. She was a shy girl to begin with and often dove under the first bed when visitors came. For the first few years of her life, her family and herself lived in a virtual bubble from the rest of the world. Sure they heard scraps of information about what had been going on with the Weyrs and Holds but seeing as how they minded their own business in their neck of the south, they didn't bother to worry. However, Priya was taught with the rest of the children, that anyone outside the hold wasn't to be trusted. This began a long line of paranoia problems with Priya, making her suspicious of every person she met. When family members began getting attacked by occasional bandits looking for quick supplies, her shyness escalated to all out anxiety about strangers.
Later, the plague swept it's way through her little hold. Priya spent most of her days, trailing behind the larger Hold's healer, doing her best to help out and ease the sickness in her group. Once the illness seemed to die down, the Healer commented to her parents on her exceptional skill. He offered to take her back to the healerhall with him so she could be of even more use to her family should another illness ever rise again. Her parents were more than thrilled to see one their remaining children get out of the stuffy little hold to see the world. Priya of course, didn't agree with them one bit. She hated to disappoint her parents though and rather unhappily, went North.
At this point in her life, Priya had little if no contact with dragons, whers, or even firelizards. One could imagine the look on her face when the ship brought her ashore, followed by a caravan, to Fort. The big watchdragon at the Hold all but stunned her into silence. She spent a full two days just sitting out on the rocks, watching the dragon sunbathe before she was finally dragged off to the Healerhall.
She was in for a whole new experience when she entered the Hall. Never before had she been around so many people. Her childhood lessons of fear and mistrust made her back into the corner several times, becoming all but mute during her stay. Despite that, she excelled as a student. She enjoyed the one on one time with Masters who figured out it was better to teacher her by themselves or with a small group of other apprentices. Her diligence to the craft and every need to please them put her at the top of the class. It was often said that if she just learned to loosen up and not jump at every footstep, she would make a remarkable healer.
Almost two turns she spent studying and found the harsh reality of Pern to be a tad overwhelming. She shivered at the idea of seeing dragons fight, trying to imagine that first dragon she had caught a glimpse of in the the talons of another. The north was also a different story compared to how she was treated down south. Priya avoided going near the Hold itself as well as the local men. At home, women were expected to of course care for the family but they were respected. This didn't help with her lack of social finesse, making the girl more uncomfortable by the day to remain up north.
She still longed for home. Her master began to pick up on her wish to return home. He sent her on the next ship home for her to apprentice with a local healer near her hold, hoping that would stop her from fretting about being home with her family. Priya found her family safe and intact. She continued to meet with the local healer at Blossom's when she had time between her chores at the hold, never really thinking about dragons as much as she used to. Priya was slowly being sucked back into her little community.
Settled home, she became re accustomed to the lack of information about anything beyond the nearest hold. That suited her just fine. She would often have regrets of leaving home and being smacked in the face with the hard reality outside their protective bubble. So life went on for her until some time later, a rider arrived. She had ridden her way up to Blossom, reading for another lesson with the local healer. A crowd outside caught her eye as she stabled her runner. Her anxiety over people lost out to sheer curiosity when she saw the big blue dragon settled not far away from the gathering crowd. When was the last time she had seen a dragon?
Priya crept to the sidelines, ears straining to hear any bit of information on why he was here. Had something happened to the local Weyr? She was ignored by the crowd but the dragon spotted her holding off to the edge. He turned his head, speaking with his rider, who after answering some of the holders questions, made his way over to her. She perked up as he got closer; glancing around to realize that no one else was nearby and he was coming directly to her. Every nerve in her body called for her to run but that welcoming smile on his face made her stand still. He explained he was merely delivering a message when his dragon picked her out of the crowd. They were not on an official candidate search as there was no clutch on the sands at the time. And yet his blue was quite adamant about taking this quiet little girl back with them to stand someday.
Step outside her little bubble again? Oh no, going to the Healer Hall had been just about as much as she could stand. She quickly decline, squeaking quietly about taking lessons here and her duty to her family. He continued to try however, telling her she could always work with the Weyr's healer and the infirmary during her freetime. Why live in a backwater hold when she could possibly have a dragon? He reassured her that if she failed to impress, she was always welcome to return home. A rare moment of bravery sparked in the girl. Priya made a quick letter to be sent back home and with a great deal on uncertainty, climbed onto the dragon's back and made her way to Selenitas to stand for their next hatching.
