((Special Candidate Lesson for whomever gets assigned to S'rring and Uth. If you haven't been assigned make sure you go to the Candidate Barracks and read what Ruby posted there. ^^))
We are so itchy, why are you waiting S'rring? Uth practically whined at his bonded as they waited just outside the barracks. The Brown was laying on the ground on his side squirming as he tried to scratch an itch that was just out of his reach, and staring up at S'rring as if it were his fault he itched so badly.
S'rring, for his part, was looking around. The Candidatemaster had told the new weyrlings that they'd be joined by a candidate or two to help them care for their new dragon. Each weyrling was assigned a partner to 'teach' about the basic early care of the young hatchlings, a good learning experience for the candidates who were waiting for the next clutch. The young man had slightly mixed feelings about this; he too had been passed over at previous hatchings then had to go help oil someone else's hatchling - honestly he'd felt a bit bitter towards the weyrlings he'd had to help back then. How could he have not? He'd stood time and time again, only to be passed over and over... then to add insult to injury he'd had to help them care for a dragon that he had felt should have been his. He was worried that the candidates left over from this hatching would feel the same way towards him, that the tension between the new weyrling pair and the candidate would be so apparent one could cut it with a knife. At his dragon's complaint he simply glanced over to him and shook his head, even without Oth in close proximity his Brown still spoke as if he were - 'we' and 'us' were terms he was getting used to hearing in place of 'I'. Strange, but he supposed nothing about his Brown was all that normal. He was a twin after all and the first time he'd oiled Uth he'd noticed some of his hide was quite a bit thicker in places. Strange.
Uth continued to squirm around, though for the bulky Brown it wasn't the easiest task to do so. Looking more like a fish out of water flopping around as it took its last breaths, Uth was far from graceful in appearance. Chuckling S'rring finally took some pity on the hatchling and knelt down to scratch along his back, being rewarded with a soft croon of pleasure from his bonded. "Is that better?"
In place of a real answer another long croon was given and after he figured Uth was satisfied he stood back up. He had been certain that the Candidatemaster had said today, around this time. Maybe he was just early? Or the candidate he was to meet was late. Looking over to his left he eyed the oil bucket and brushes he'd brought with him, as well as the bucket with water and towels. Uth didn't need a full bath - or hadn't before he rolled around on the ground like a dog - so S'rring was just going to have his helper use the wet towels to wipe the dirt and dust off the Brown's hide before oiling. Now he was wondering if it'd be a better idea to take Uth down to the weyr lake for a bath before being oiled, not that he could until whoever he was meeting finally decided to show up.
We are bored. This time it was less of a whine and more of a statement, but not by much.
You. You are bored. Oth isn't even here you know. Even as he said it, S'rring looked behind him as if half expecting his roommate and Uth's twin to be walking up. It seemed they often ended up wherever the other one was - mostly due to Uth and Oth dragging their bondeds around so they could be together. At least Au'st wasn't as terrible guy, if not the most motivated man in the world.
We are hungry, where is the food?
"You sure are quite a whiner today Uth. You just ate this morning, and you ate quite a feast. How can you be hungry again?" S'rring's amusement towards his Brown was evident in his jovial tone as he looked over at him once more. It had only been a few days since he'd Impressed Uth but he was already beginning to learn there were few things in life that the Brown enjoyed more than eating. "Maybe after your bath and oiling we'll get you some food, okay?"
That is, if they ever got around to the bath and oiling - where was his helper for the day anyway?
