Deceased: Died in Selenitas Earthquake Plot
Humans:
Name: Alexia
Age: 18
Gender: Female
Sexual Orientation: Hetero
Rank: Candidate
Physical Appearance: Alex stands at a height of 5'5", neither short nor tall. In build she is very physically fit. She has always taken pride in being in shape. She is notably well muscled though there is no evidence of a six pack or anything overtly musculature. Just a very toned build. Her complexion is coppery bronzen tan, when she tans she is only darker.
Her hair is an extremely dark brown, lightening a bit in the sun but jet black when wet, near black when spending more time indoors. Her eyes are rimmed by dark brown on the outer rim and around the pupil, but the rest, especially the bottom half, are a light roan red brown. They are lighter in the light, darker when not. She has a full set of lips that seem to be solemn most of the time, though she'll laugh or smile if she's having a good time. It's just that she only laughs or smiles if it's called for and most of the time it's not. Her nose is just a nose, neither too big nor small for her face. She is actually pretty but she doesn't enhance it any. Above average but she never seems to play on it.
She is not the type of girl to wear much, if any make up. Her tom-boy personality means that dresses are a big no. Even during gathers she doesn't wear dresses. She loves her wher hide boots and jacket. She loves her trousers and shirts. Many people have tried to get her into a skirt or dress, because she would probably look nice in one. She simply refuses to wear either. A rough and tumble sort a little dirt on her or mussed hair doesn't bother her in the least.
Personality: Tough as nails is the first thing that comes to mind once anyone gets to know Alex. Maybe she craves adventure or has a thing for adrenaline rushes but wherever there is a chance to get in on the action Alex is the first one there. Perhaps regular life is simply too mundane for her tastes and she wants something more. Maybe this is why the idea of dragonriding has always held a particular pull for her. Anything out of the ordinary holds a high appeal for her as she gets bored by routine. She would prefer to keep things interesting and in Terran terms might have been diagnosed with ADD.
Alex is very down to earth and practical. Logic and tactics are her strong points and she is blunt as can be. She's not afraid of getting her feelings hurt and she tells it like it is. There doesn't seem to be much in the way of weakness where she's involved. Although she isn't emotionless many people think of her as a 'female canine' in terms of how blatant and to the point she is. She doesn't believe in giving up and she doesn't believe in not trying. She's got a lot of good ideas and she's pretty smart--though not as much academically as in other ways. Academically she is average. Not always the wisest person, Alex often knows what is the wise choice but prefers to take the 'just do it!' route. She is a risk taker and she needs to learn that there are some risks one needs to learn not to take. That she has been extremely lucky and that only receiving scrapes and bruises thus far is simply that: luck.
While she deviates from listening to her orders and is often known for rebelling and doing things in a way she thinks is more effective or better, she is capable of taking charge or following someone's lead equally...as long as she gets to do it with a bit of her own flair added to it. In a team she is always the one raring to go and get things done. Her enthusiasm for duller activities is not high but she doesn't mind hard work. Hard work is something she is used to and usually she'll do it in somber silence. She isn't above physical labor such as drudges might do though cleaning latrines is not something she can bring herself to do. Hunting, gutting and cleaning the kills, prepping meat, gathering food--this is hard work she enjoys. Cooking is a secret love of hers as well as baking but it's something she usually does for herself and not anyone else. With both parents deceased she has raised herself for the most part, though outside influences likely made her some of who she is. Dream big and go after what you want.
Whereas boys are concerned she's either interested or she's not. She hates having to deal with men who just want in her pants and will brush them aside by ignoring them or ripping into them with a tongue lashing. She isn't the most patient of people, truth be told. She has a temper and isn't the sort of person people think about double crossing because she can and will kick their butt. She delighted in learning to wrestle and fight right alongside the boys and now she's tougher than most girls would ever be suspected of being. It shows in the way she carries herself and definitely shows when it's not her going home with a black eye or bloody nose. She gets a thrill out of fighting--again an adrenaline rush--and won't be the one to back down from one. Growing up in the Hold she did ensured that rules were not what they would be in a Weyr.
History: Lighttower Hold. It was hardly a good place for someone who wanted to one day be a dragonrider to have been born. But born Alex was, to a father who never wanted a child and a mother who was known for her random one night stands. She didn't want a child to get in the way of her life. She was content to carry the child and then give it to someone who actually did want one. So it was that upon birth Alexia was given to a miner who worked in the quarries and his wife who was a Journeywoman Weaver who had come to Lighttower only after meeting her father and would raise her for the nearly eighteen turns she chose to live there. At Lighttower she couldn't pursue her craft but she refused to not pass on what she knew to her daughter. No one had to find out if it was done in the privacy of her own home.
Alex's father was not as close minded as most of the men of Lighttower. He had been outside of the Hold before and seen different views. He did not agree that women should not be Craftsmasters. So he did not have a problem with his wife teaching their daughter skills she might one day use if she chose to live elsewhere. He loved his wife and daughter and was always doing whatever necessary to make them happy. It could not have been a better family for Alex given her unique personality, ideas and life choices.
Lighttower was cut off from the Weyrs so none of what happened with the Weyrs affected the Hold. There was always talk and rumors of the going ons but no one was allowed to have anything to do with Selenitas, Benden or Fort. A girl like Alex could only catch random words here and there. But the stories she heard stuck with her. Her life seemed dull in comparison and even from a young age she had a deep curiosity about dragonriders and Weyrs. No matter that her father and mother were very stern about not speaking about it she could always been found gathering information and excitedly sharing it with her friends. Who were also of the mind that such things were better left unspoken about.
As a child she was always rough and tumble. One of the boys, as it was, she had to make sure they took her seriously so wrestling and fighting wasn't uncommon. Most learned she could hold her own and though a few didn't think she fit in the ones that mattered did. She was definitely female but more male in behavior. She never acted the part of a young lady and no one ever saw her as one until she hit thirteen turns and started to become one quite notably. To better fit in she wore her hair short and always wore male clothing, usually more baggy in style. There were enough who didn't accept a girl in there midst that she had to do whatever it took to hold her own. She always had to be that much quicker, that much better, try that much harder than the boys. Eventually the ones who wanted to ignore her did and she stuck with the ones who accepted her--even though some of them did so begrudgingly. She had enough friends amongst the boys who were more ready to accept her that they were willing to threaten anyone who told on her for fighting. There were different 'gangs' of friends but eventually most who didn't like her ignored her because if they ratted her out chances were they would be jumped by Alex's group of friends. After all, she had gotten into trouble more than a few times because someone told on her for acting like a boy--mostly fighting or wrestling. Mostly because someone didn't like that she had beaten them or bettered them at something. Still, time passed and tattletales learned they were best keeping their mouths shut.
There was one thing Lighttower could not keep apart from. When Thread returned in 3006 the Hold could no longer afford not to tithe. They began to tithe to Selenitas again--though not happily. Thread was scary to most people on Pern. Even dragonriders were wary of it. However the nine turns old Alex figured that this would be a chance for Lighttower to rethink letting their Holdfolk to be Searched. Nothing of the sort happened. Attitudes did not change. They tithed because if they did not Thread would destroy their land and Hold. Not because it was something they wanted to be doing. Still, Thread meant more dragons, didn't it? Dragons had a reason to fly overhead now. More dragons would be clutched now---wouldn't they? Or so she liked to think. Meanwhile, nothing really changed since she could not be Searched.
She wanted to work in the quarry and potentially bond to a wher. It was the closest thing to dragons after all. But whers didn't fly in the skies, fighting Thread and battles; and girls did not work in the quarry. It just wasn't enough and she kept on turning the idea over in her mind that one day she would stand, meanwhile learning whatever her mother would teach her--mostly weaving in secret.
No one else she knew had Impressed a dragon. No one would dare, no one would. Raised to believe dragonriders were all the same, only after taking care of themselves and ready to screw anyone over to get what they wanted it was surprising that Alex decided to disagree with that. Not all of them could be like that. There were good and bad people and not every dragonrider could be bad. She wouldn't be, if she were one.
The plan was just that: a plan. Nothing came of it for Turns but one day she simply decided she was old enough that she didn't have to listen to anyone anymore. Even if it meant leaving the Hold to go to the nearest Weyr: Selenitas. The very Weyr that Lighttower Hold residents were forced into hating. After all, she wasn't stupid. There were two sides to every story. She didn't like the repression of women in Lighttower, either. She left a note for her parents and left with a team going to get supplies from out of the Hold. When they were camped overnight she took off with only the clothes on her back and two extra sets of clothing, her hunting knife and a bit of food. She would walk the entire way to Selenitas but she never got the chance.
Now that she was out of Lighttower there were dragons flying overhead quite often. It seemed that luck was once again with her as a green landed and she was Searched right then and there. She was surprised and elated, confident now that leaving had been what she was meant to do. The green offered to take her the rest of the way and she accepted. Between didn't even daunt her, she was after all planning on having a dragon of her own and one day she'd be going between a lot, right? She hadn't known about it until the greenrider told her about it anyhow. Now she has only just arrived at Selenitas and a new possible future lies ahead of her. No matter what the outcome there's no going back now....
