Roads Weyrlings Lesson 1 (From ~ June 15 - July 10)
In this time I expect At least three posts each. It's about a month long thread guys. That's not too much to ask. ~ <3 Lessons are always more fun with more people ;D
Your dragons are two months old by this point. First lessons were largely devoted to care and getting to know and understand the bond between you.

They had partially cleared out a portion of the forest near Burimyu specifically to use as a training ground for the new weyrlings. It was here that Jingth’s last clutch met five days out of every sevenday. There were enough trees spaced out along the open area to provide cover from anything flying above and that was it. As the babies grew these trees would become a hindrance but for now they provided shade, cover, and nice obstacles.
Kaaoloth stood off to the side of the field, his neck arched and wings mantled, as he watched his rider finish the step up for the day. The pair had wholeheartedly thrown themselves into the duties that had been asked of them. Sel’n finding purpose in the fact that the title of Weyrlingmaster had again been bestowed upon him. His large brown had taken the new babies under his wing the day they were hatched, with a final sincere promise to the dying queen he had once taught herself. He would watch over them where she could not.
Straightening Sel’n made his way to the large brown and stroked along his scared muzzle as the beast dipped his head. “You can call them wherface. Make sure they all show up this time. If not we’ll be making special lessons for them.” A soft rumble left the brown’s chest as he reached for the minds of all the Road’s weyrlings. It is time for class my little ones. Report to the training field. Do not dally. If you want to avoid extra work you should make sure that you all show up. The words were pleasant and cheerful despite the small prod about attendance. One half of the brownpair didn’t mind making class hell on Pern for all of them if it would come back to bite the absent ones. Sometimes incentive from your classmates was the best kind.
Sel’n moved from Kaaoloth to a line he had drawn in the soil. As the weyrlings began to arrive he gave them each a pleasant nod. “Please make your way to the line you see here and line up. Dragons to Kaaoloth please.” Giving a coon the brown spread his large wings and half folded them. This way little ones. Do hurry. Today we are playing a game. Large eyes whirled in playful and pleasant shades as the first of the hatchlings made their way towards him.

Kaaoloth calls Ke'vonmine, the brown said, prouding his rider with his muzzle. Ke'von grinned and gave the young dragon an appreciative pat, and put his hands to his lips. He had just finished feeding Pudge, his young razorclaw, and the avian had fallen asleep in a makeshift nest. The bird when awake clung to him, so he had to be careful not to wake the Razorclaw up. It would do no good to show up to Weyrling Lessons with the ball of fat perched on his shoulder. "I know, I've heard too. We'd best be going then, so come on." Since Ke'von had impressed Ontehth, he had thouroughly enjoyed is new life as a weyrling, but like many others, he had been dreading the lessons. Dreading them or not, the lessons were a part of his routine now, and there really was no way of getting around them. Ontehth however, was estatic at the propect of lessons- his rider would be forced to be social for once.
The first ones there, Ke'von smiled tentivly to Sel'n. He really didn't mind Sel'n he had come across as a decent guy durning the first few lessons. He glanced at the line on the floor and fell into place, straightening his back and squaring his shoulders, gritting his teeth as his injure shoulder gave a defiant twinge at the action. “Go on Ontehth,” he said, shooing the brown weyrling towards the much larger brown. Ke'von swore that Ontehth gave him a smirk before bounding over playfully towards Kaaoloth.
Games? Ontehth cried, wiggling his hindquarters like a canine in excitement. I just love games! I am so very good at them! What kind of game will we be playing? A running game? the brown asked as he made a show of darting around. A Hiding game? Ontehth froze and tried to make his relitivly large bulk look much smaller. Or perhaps a hunting game! Ontehth crept along the floor and struck his head out at an imaginary target.I don't care, I'm good at them all, The brown said, sounding exceding pleased with his 'prowness' at all the games he named. Do tell them to hurry up Kaaoloth, I really would like to start.

N'rik did not like extra work, but he did actually enjoy lessons. These were far more interesting than Candidate Lessons and any excuse to spend more active time with Ophiuchusth was fun. Besides, Ophiuchusth liked being with the other weyrlings, so much that N'rik was even grudgingly admitting to liking some of them. Especially Ke'von, with whom he'd shared some quality time with the Weyr Healer's after the Hatching mishaps. The only thing that still made Lessons a little frustrating was Ophiuchusth's eyesight. It continued to worsen, despite drilling E'rro and Nephele for answers. At least he could see fine at night, for some reason.
The three of them arrived promptly, right after Ke'von and Ontehth. N'rik waved at his teacher and fellow student with a shrug and moved to the line. He was ready for anything old Sel'n could throw at him. He just hoped today they might get to do something really interesting. He wanted to take good care of Ophiuchusth, but those lessons were starting to get boring. Show them who's best! N'rik shot his dragon a grin. I will try, Ophiuchusth agreed, with a touch less confidence. At least he would have his friends to keep him company, even if he wasn't sure things would turn out as well as N'rik always wanted them too. Good day, Kaaoloth and Ontehth! What game! I love games! the little blue bounced with delight, worries about letting N'rik down forgotten.

Kaaoloth calls. was all Tserieth said when she heard the older Brown's summons go out. Roselle glanced up from the bracelet she'd been stringing gems onto.
Lessons, I assume?, the woman asked as she sat her project down and brushed herself off. Standing she stretched a bit and then looked to her Green. Tserieth just nodded and stood up, beginning to waddle-walk her way out the door.
Following behind the serpentine little Green - I am not little. - Roselle and Tserieth made it to the 'training grounds' relatively quickly. Third ones there, not bad though she wouldn't have minded being first either.
As Tserieth made her way towards Kaaoloth, Roselle headed to line up as instructed. She could hear her Green as she spoke up to the large Brown, With all due respect, Kaaoloth, I am not little. I am a perfectly acceptable size.
Cringing slightly inside Roselle glared at Tserieth before turning her attentions to Sel'n.

The next person to arrive was... not T'ri, or Arhenaiyth. No, the young Blue was sprawled in his weyr, head on his paws, while His used him as a back pillow. T'ri had his guitar across his lap, and was picking out a few sad chords, humming a disjointed melody on top. He occasionally made notes on a tablet next to him, but they had nothing to do with the song he was working on. No, he was writing down words and phrases he liked, ones that had an interesting sound to them. "Cellar... door," he said, leaning sideways to make a note. "What do you think, Henny" Arhenaiyth, the blue corrected, his tone dripping irony. If you don't plan to use your tongue right, shall I remove it for you?
Used to his dragon's black humor by now, T'ri gave a little snort, reaching out to rub the back of Arhenaiyth's neck with something perilously close to a smile on his face. The blue leaned into it with a kind of eye-roll, clearly enjoying the touch even though his eyes stayed a muted grey-green. Suddenly, though, his head jerked up, and the young dragon blinked twice. Lessons, the blue drawled, dropping his head back to his paws again. Apparently we must all show up or there will be extra work. If our teacher thinks that he can interrupt my T'ri time like that, he is dearly mistaken. I hope a weyrling falls on his head.
"So we aren't going," T'ri said, somewhere between a question and a statement. Arhenaiyth pushed his big blue head onto T'ri's lap, raising an eyeridge to look up at his rider. That is indeed what it means. My time is my own, and I have a schedule. Lessons are not on it. T'ri relaxed back into his dragon, draping one arm along Arhenaiyth's back between his wings as he took a sip from the tumbler next to him - half as alcoholic as normal, someone had mentioned that it might not be good for his dragon if T'ri was smashed all the time - and smacked his lips appreciatively. "Did I ever tell you you're pretty deck, Henny." Arhenaiyth.

Sel’n watched as the weyrlings filed in. He waited a few more moments for any minute late arrivals before shaking his head sadly. Only one class in such a small population and they didn’t even have the curiosity to show up for lessons that they needed? Well they’d see how long that lasted. Or how long the older rider would put up with it. It wasn’t like these lessons were for fun. They were done to teach the class how to function as proper dragonriders. If he had to use force to get them to cooperate he would. If Sel’n ended up exhausting all his options then he had no qualms about going to the council about it. Hopefully it wouldn’t come to that. Dragonriders as drudges would be a sad thing and that was all that was waiting for the pairs who refused to show up. Life as a drudge or worse.
The brownrider gave a respectful nod to each of the human halves of the bond and then proceeded to stride down the line. “It seems as if some of your classmates find attendance less then important. Shame really. Now I could make you all suffer for their choice. But then that wouldn’t really be completely fair when the rest of all show up ready and willing. So instead I’m going to ask that you impart upon them nothing that you learn. If they want to waste the gift that they have been given that is their decision. They will have to bear the consequences of their own actions. I just pray that others do not suffer for their follies.” He would personally visit the absent ones later. For now he had a class to teach.
“Today we will be playing a bit of a game. It’s an exercise intended to help you develop the bond you have with your dragon.” As well as teach them the importance of team work. “Your dragons will be with Kaaoloth playing their own game but you need to pay attention because their game ties into yours.” Turning he pointed to a multitude of colorful flags tied up in the branches of the trees interspersed throughout the field. “Your goal is to acquire the flag color your dragon tells you to. You will run out and climb one of the trees to obtain a flag. You will then race back and place the flag on the ground before tagging the next person to go and asking your dragon for the next color. There are eighteen colors of flag but only nine are the correct colors. Once you have all nine colors in the correct order you have completed the exercise and we’ll move on to something else. You may begin as soon as your dragon tells you what color you are looking for. Roselle you will be our first runner everyone else get ready. She could tag any one of you on her return.”
Kaaoloth watched the weyrlings bound over to him with happiness. There was nothing he loved more then the little ones. Dipping his head he crooned, eyes whirling in happy shades as he addressed them all. Yes little ones a game. I will tell you what the game is a momentarily I promise. A rumble of amusement was given to Tserieth. Of course you are a perfectly acceptable size my dear. But compared to me you are indeed a little one. Nuzzling her he coiled his tail around.
Today we will all be playing a game. You will have to pay not only careful attention to me but to your riders as well for they will be asking you questions. Settling his wings against his back Kaaoloth sprawled out. I am thinking of a color. You can each ask me one question in an attempt to guess what color I am thinking of, but you may not directly ask me what the color is. You must work together to discover what the color is. So ask wisely. You all only get one question each. Once you think you have the answer you can tell yours what the color is. The brown titled his head in thought before crooning to the little ones. I have my color. Ask.

Roselle listened intently to Sel'n as he spoke, what was with this Weyr and games? Candidate lessons had included games as well. Though as she glanced around she assumed the lessons were more to intrigue the younger Weyrlings.
I need to know what color he is telling you., Roselle glanced over to where the Brown and the much smaller dragonets were.
Kaaoloth will not tell us the color. We must ask.
What's stopping you then? I am standing here like a fool waiting on you.
I am thinking., Tserieth shot back and then looked up at Kaaoloth, Is the color happy?
Colors cannot be happy Tserieth...
Yes. They can. Please be quiet, I would hate to miss his answer.
Rolling her eyes Roselle looked around again, only five of them had shown up, herself included. That meant their dragons only had five questions to try and figure out the color - the chances they'd get it right were slim. Taking that into consideration she suddenly took off, running towards the trees. She wasn't a skilled tree climber, so she may as well get a head start, though if Tserieth didn't give her a hint soon she would just grab one and let the next person go.

R'lyeh stared skeptically into Keqesith's lightly mirrored eyes.
"It's not going to work," he started, breaking the silence and gently patting the strange contraption he had compiled at the behest of his mind mate.
Yes it is, she cooed, just trust me.
"I trusted you last time..."
THAT...wasn't my fault. If you had put it together the way *I* told you to in the first place...
"Certainly...and for what purpose could I possibly need TWO arms? You apparently thought that ONE should suffice."
Creeeeeeeaaak! interjected Biyakhi, vindictively looking up at his bonded and his bonded's giant lizardy food-morsel. He had only tried to eat it once and the event had ended...unfavorably for him. One day, perhaps...when he is big and strong, he'll take another chance... One day...
Tenacious little beast, Keqesith eyed the little bird with annoyance and taking the opportunity to change subjects. If it tries to bite me again, I may have to swallow it.
"I would advise against it," R'lyeh rubbed his scabby hands protectively in remembrance of the training of the hatchling Razorclaw, "he is not one to go down so easily as a side of meat. Besides, he'd have an easier time of hurting you from the inside and I have no wish to become a mind-less cripple." Though, he had to admit, that there were times it might seem preferable...
Hmph, the Green snorted and then suddenly twinged. Oh! R'lyeh! It's time for lessons!
"What?"
Right now! Lessons!
"And?"
And we're going to be late if we don't leave now!
"The lesson-ground is on the other side of Berimyu. We are going to be late regardless of the matter."
Keqesith's tone became immediately sharp and commanding. You are MINE, R'lyeh. You will do as I say. I will not have MY Rider make ME look stupid because HE makes us tardy to lessons!
"I think you misunderstand, Green," R'lyeh shot back belligerently, "it was YOUR idea to come all the way over here to work upon this... ridiculous contraption. It is YOUR fault that we are so far away and it is YOUR fault that we are going to be late. The only blame on my brow is that I let you lead us away from our duties."
Keqesith tossed her head. It doesn't matter whose fault it is now. All that matters is that we get over there as soon as possible. Quickly, now. Start running. It will get you into shape. I need my rider to be quite fit. Only the fittest will do to ride one so perfect as me.
R'lyeh fought against the compulsive urge to strike the arrogant beast before him. He had been making great strides in self-control since he had been accepted into the Berimyu community, with a few...minor exceptions. As such, he settled himself to the best of his ability and considered the issue at hand. It was true: running was the answer. He might be late...but at least he would be there. And being there was much better than *NOT* being there. His last absences (as a candidate) taught him the err of such ways.
With a sigh, R'lyeh swallowed his pride and dying fury, scooped up the little Razorclaw (which, while quite agitated, did not peck or scratch its master) and set off at a touch-above-comfortable pace for the lesson ground, his Green galloping ungainly at his side; clearly pleased that she had gotten her way yet again.

A guessing game! What a good game indeed, and one that Ontehth planned to excell on. He was convinced his anilitical mind would help him help his clutch sibblings. Now, what kind of color was the larger dragon thinking of?He spared a glance for Ke'von, who was waiting patiently. He would not be the first one to run to the trees, so he was relaxing. He would obviously not going to be any help.
Ke'von was so lazy.
Now, for his question. His green sister asked if it was a happy color, which was a rather awkward question in the brown's opinion. Perhaps she was reffereing to the brightness? Happy colors could mean summer tones while sad could mean winty hues. Yes, Ontehth decided, thats what she meant. Now if only he could ask two questions, then he would have this puzzle solved! But of course, Ontehth thought, he could get one of his clutch sibblings to ask his second question for him, that is if they were willing. What letter does your color start with Kaooloth? Turning to Ophiuchusth, he nudged his smaller clutch sibblings. Would you ask him how many letters it takes to spell the color he is thinking of? The brown curled his tail in delight, extremely pleased with himself for figuring out a way to find the color.

C'ln awoke in his weyr with his blue dragon dragging the covers off and then looked around. "'C'ln up now," said Asiryth as he kept pushing his rider to get out of bed. When he looked at his dragonet then remebered today was the start of lessons and then got dressed. The dress for the day included a a white shirt and a pair of black leather pants with black boots. While he put on a black vest and then looked around then laid eyes on his Ravenclaw. It was Squakers that got the second of his attention and soon had him on his shoulder. "We better grab something to eat," said C'ln as he walked with the two of them down to the lower caverns to get some meat. He cut up the meat for the dragon and fed a little to his Ravenclaw.
The weyrling smiled at his dragon then took off running to where they we're suppose to meet with the others. He knew that the Ravenclaw should have stayed at the weyrling barracks. C'ln couldn't leave his little Ravenclaw behind and soon arrived at the field that had a few trees dotted around. "Sorry, we're late," said C'ln as he came to stand around the weyrlingmaster and the other weyrlings. It seemed that there we're a few others that we're late and he looked around. His blue was already looking around and his Ravenclaw was on his shoulder looking around at the other Ravenclaw that sat on a nearby weyrling's shoulder.

Isori and Aikelyth arrived at the training grounds at a dead flat out sprint, breathless and worried they were too late to be reconciled. Leaning on her knees with one hand and grabbing at her ribs with the other, Isori took a moment on the edge of the clearing just to get her breath back. She had run a very long distance to get there at all, after having heard the call for lessons. But what could she do? She had been busy, doing things that were useful. Of course, that had entailed the use of her half-trained wild runner too, and she'd had to put him away first as well. Lest he get the notion to run away on her.
Still gasping for breath, Isori took her place with the others, hoping to be able to catch up on what was going on, on the fly. Watching and listening, she looked up into the trees and saw the flags. Oh joy. Climbing? She'd better catch her wind fast!!!
Aikelyth loped over to where Kaaoloth was curling up with the other weyrlings. Sides heaving and nostrils flared wide from her run, she held her silence for the moment. Not because being winded would affect her ability to speak, but because she was listening. Gathering information, making up for being late. She needed to know what everyone else knew. She needed to know, to learn, and Faranth forbid, to avoid failing her lessons! How could she be all she needed to be if she didn't know what she needed to know?
Curling her tail around her legs, she sat down and rested, eyes taking in all there was to be seen in the clearing, all there was to be heard. Both from the humans and from the dragons. Turning her gaze back to Kaaoloth, she finally offered a comment; What commonly comes in this color? she asked.
Isori winced, and took an unsteady deep breath to try and still her huffing further. Wait. She could do that. Wait and watch. She'd get the gist of this.

N'rik glanced around, a little disgusted that some of his classmates were missing. It was one thing to skip Candidate lessons, but they were riders now. If even he could be bothered to hear what old Sel'n had to say, than they could. At least some of them seemed to be arriving anyway, just late. N'rik resisted the urge to stick out his tongue at them, mostly because Sel'n had started speaking again. Rude, Nabrik Alph scolded gently in his ear. The salamandyr curled around his neck, quite happy to be ignore by everyone else. Be nice. Be friend. N'rik shrugged, not sure whether he cared what the other kids thought of his attitude. It wasn't worth Sel'n getting mad at him anyway.
The game, on the other hand, looked like a lot of fun! He still had to rely on the others, not his favorite plan, but he was learning. Ophiuchustch seemed pretty interested at least. His dragon loved playing with his siblings, and that was good enough for N'rik too. Well, Ophi? What color is it? N'rik asked, a little impatient for his turn. I do not know, Ophiuchusth voice was bright with excitement and curiosity. That is why it is a guessing game! N'rik rolled his eyes. He should have known better than to expect an answer so soon.
Ophiuchusth liked this game. Maybe not the game itself, but the fact he would get to work with his siblings. He dearly loved being with them, especially when they were close enough to not be quite so fuzzy in the daylight. Each one was different and fun to be around. Ontehth suggestion was met with an eager nod, a movement he'd picked up from his boy. Of course! Kaaoloth, sir? How many letters to spell your color? He wasn't entirely sure what Ontehth meant by that, but he was very smart so it must be a good idea.

Sel’n was actually a bit pleasantly surprised when the remainder of his class, save one, finally trickled in. Apparently some of them had been held up or hadn’t been close enough when the call rang out. Hmm. Well they could discuss tardiness later. Right now they had a lesson to complete. Greeting each new arrival with a sharp nod he gruffly explained the task ahead of them again and waited for the reminder of the hatchlings to make their way to Kaaoloth before he turned to watch Roselle’s progress.
Good girl. That’s what the brownrider wanted, movement and communication at the same time. It took a good deal more concentration moving and talking to your dragon then performing the same action standing still. As the greenweyrling sprinted towards the tree he walked the line of waiting weyrlings occasionally asking one or another of them a question about their dragon or the question their dragon was asking his.
Kaaoloth rumbled to the newly arrived babies and quickly filled them in on the game before he began answering their eager questions. Good questions they were too. A smart batch these ones. Dipping his head he nosed Tserieth. The color is indeed a happy shade. Ontehth had a good question as well and he crooned to the little brown. The color starts with a Y. Aikelyth was gently prodded with a muzzle the larger brown making sure the little green was alright before he cheerfully responded to her question. Lemons commonly come in this color. Swinging his head around to rumble in amusement at Ophiuchusth his tail tip twitched. Six letters make up my color. You also do not need to call me sir little one. Kaaoloth is perfectly acceptable.
Oh he was having fun with this he was. Such sharp little minds they had. He had no doubt that most of them had figured out the color already. Hopefully Tserieth was passing this information on to her bonded so that they could get started on the next color. Once you think you have the color you may tell your rider so that they may share it. I now have another color in mind. Please little ones continue. And you may not ask the same question twice. So keep track of what your siblings have asked, lest you waste a question. I will not answer those questions that have already been asked once. So use your questions wisely and share information. The less questions you need for an answer the better.
As Roselle crossed the line with her flag Sel’n gave her a smile and encouraged the next weyrling to go. “Hurry now. Step lively. Roselle gave you a good start and you are being timed.” For what purpose the older rider didn't divulge just yet.
~~~
In case no one got it, (Though I think it is pretty clear), the color for this round is yellow.
Ke'von suspressed a chuckle as his brown dragon started raving how ingenious he was. How wonderful to have such an egotistical mind to share, but hopefully it wouldn't rub off on him. It's Yellllloooooowwwwwww Yellow Yellow Yellow. I am so smart Yes I am. Did you see that Ke'vonmine? Am I not extremelly adapt at figuring things out. Yellow Yellow Yellow, Ontehth said, practically strutting. Ke'von rolled his eyes. Tone it down a bit please? His request was ignored, because already Ontehth was jabbering away at his clutchmates, telling them all how awesome he was. Shards.
Ke'von smiled at Roselle and took a step forwards. "I will go next... I guess," he trailed off, glancing at the other weyrlings, hoping they wouldn't mind him stepping forward. When nobody objected, he ran towards the tree, mindful they were all being timed.
Ontehth quickly stopped his proclimations after Kaooloth delivered the next challange. That was a low blow. They couldn't repeat questions? Then how on pern were they supposed to figure out the next color. Fine then, he would just have to think outside the box. What colors does it fall between in a common rainbow? Ontehth did consider that not all the colors were in the rainbow, but he brushed the notion away. If the color was not in the rainbow, it was not worth knowing.
His sibblings need not ask anyquestions, as Ontehth was positive he would be able to figure it out with the information he would gain from Kaooloth's answer to his own. As Ke'von began his climb, he told Ontehth to play nice. Ontehth sweetly informed him to shut up and continue climbing, as he would need all his concentration to solve this riddle, and it wasn't like Ke'von would be any help anyway.
Yellow. Tserieth passed this information on to her bonded quickly and trilled when she realized Roselle had grabbed the flag and finished her task.
I think that went well.
Of course it did. Tserieth replied, a bit of an annoyed edge to her voice. She was trying to think of another question. Listening to her clutch-brother she closed her eyes and hummed to herself. Think think think. Opening her eyes they swirled a light green and blue as she looked up at the larger and older Brown.
Are any of us this color? She looked at her clutch-siblings. Brown. Green. Blue. Well, if it was the same color as one of them then that would certainly make their job easier guessing it, wouldn't it?
Its more likely the color is not one of your colors. Roselle chimed in. The Green just ignored her - if she wasn't going to be helpful her opinion didn't matter.
