Lesson 2 (12 Feb 11 - 11 Mar 11) Desert Weyrlings
Gold Nitrath ::: Impressed to Caden - 100 Bronze Epifayrmuth ::: Impressed to Mo'rya - 100 Brown Tenloceth ::: Impressed to M'ze (Current Absence) - 100 Blue Lketh ::: Impressed to Er'ani - 100 Green Sprith ::: Impressed to Ashlyn (Current Absence Thread) - 100 Green Katearath ::: Impressed to Leilani (APC) - 100 How Grades Work: 0 posts - 0 1 post - 45 2 posts - 55 3 posts - 654 posts - 755 posts - 856 posts - 95 7+ posts - 100I will post every Saturday and more often if the thread is reasonably active. ^^ Everyone gets 100 for the first lesson since we didn't have one. xP If your score is below 75 when the next weyrlings start lessons, or when your weyrling graduates, you get to roll back and stay in lessons longer! Yay. No one likes that. APC's and people with absence threads will receive 75's as a default. He'd had the weyrlings clear the floor and roll out reed mats in the common room of the weyrling barracks before they broke for lunch. Now M'ta leaned up against the wall, waiting for his students to filter back in. They'd played a demented form of marco polo earlier, with each pair taking a turn being 'it' and the riders acting as the eyes for all the baby dragons swimming in a more sedate section of the river. The brownrider was impressed. (Not that he'd shown it at all.) It seemed that the temporary weyrlingmaster over the past two months had done a good job making sure that the pairs were strengthening their bonds. He was less impressed with their physical fitness. M'ta had to slow down his dawn run quite a bit to accomodate for the slowest of the weyrlings. They needed some serious work. Well, he had about six months to change all that. Now they were starting something...new. As the last of the weyrlings came in, he began breaking them off into pairs and sending them to different sections of the mats. "S'lither or whatever his name was should have taught you the basics in unarmed self-defense. I want to see your progress. This is just a spar. Don't hurt each other. Go." It was really rather too bad if they'd had too much to eat at lunch. They wouldn't make that mistake again. While the humans went about their fumbling play-fights, Behruth had a ring of young weyrlings about him in a secluded meadow not far from the Hatching Grounds. We're going to play a game, too. The brown picked up the ball that looked like a larger version of the ones each of the weyrlings had in front of them, tossing it in the air and bouncing it on his nose. It's practice for doing more than one thing at once. I want everyone to bounce your balls on your nose like I'm doing and tell me what Yours is doing in detail at the same time. If you let the ball touch the ground or say the wrong thing, you lose a point. The one with the most points wins!***Okay! This is going to be a little different. There are four of you, so it'll be two fights going at once. The first two to post will face each other. The first of each pair to post will 'attack' and the second of each pair will 'defend'. Then it'll switch next turn. That means no godmoding. ^^ You can be creative with your attacks. Kicks, punches, grabs, whatever. And also creative with your defenses. Just leave it open-ended...the success of the attacks and defenses will be decided at random. When you post, pick a number between 1 and 4. Don't repeat the number of anyone who posted before you that round. (If for some reason only 3 post I'll put one of the NPC's in next time I post. Have fun and ask questions if you have any. ^^)

As Er’ani started back from lunch his mind brushed briefly across Lketh’s just to check in. The albino had been growing steadily stronger. Finally catching up to his siblings in growth too. The whole supplement thing was helping him immensely. The weyrling would be ever grateful to M’ta and his husband. He felt bad that his teacher had lost his weyrmate. Very bad. He had been planning to find a way to thank them both. Now he would never get the chance to thank one of them. It was awkward and made worse because he didn’t trust any of the other healers. Well save Erilena. The teen defaulted to her instead of R’wign now. There was just something about the so called dragon lady he didn’t quite trust. No Erilena wasn’t really anything but an apprentice, but so far between the two of them and R’wign’s previous instructions the greenrider had been able to keep Lketh healthy and thriving with just minor adjustments, and that was all that mattered.
Entering into the room Er’ani briefly stretched. His legs were killing him. Running and then swimming. He wasn’t really the best person at physical activity. Oh he could run and swim well enough but anything requiring grace and he would fail. He knew it. Plus he wasn’t quite used to this level of physical activity. So when M’ta announced what they were supposed to be doing he gave an audible groan. Yeah what’s his face had given them instruction and the weyrling had had such instruction at Benden besides. But well Er’ani was definitely not the fighting type. His strength was in strategy not brute strength. He was so going to get beaten into the ground. Probably by a girl too. Well if Caden could even count as a girl. Anyway he was being told to go. Go. Yeah. Okay.
Facing his opponent the blueweyrling lunged suddenly forward, aiming a punch at his opponents jaw but pulling the attack before it got too close. He followed with an attempt to sweep their legs out from under them. The first strike had been meant to distract. The attack might have been better if the teen had put any force or heart into it. But really it was…halfhearted at best. Er’ani still hated fighting.
Lketh blinked up at Behruth from his place in the shade of a large tree. Whirling pink eyes fixed on the larger brown and then on the ball in front of him. With a croon he tucked the ball up against his chest. Sounded simple. Seven dragons. Seven balls. Seven responses. (he automatically assumed Behruth was playing as well) Flicking the ball into the air the albino bumped it with his nose. Er’ani mine is trying to outsmart his opponent with his attack. -bounce- It will likely fail due to his hesitation. -bounce- There was no inflection on the blue's tone it was merely factual. Hopefully that was enough information for the teacher? Three bounces. The last one was not very straight. Had to fix that.

Caden was only panting slightly - the Goldweyrling was barely even winded, actually. Keeping in shape was second nature to her; had been since her first bout of Weyrling lessons. Not to mention that M'ta's pace had been ridiculously slow. She supposed she understood, not everyone here had a dragonrider's habits to fall back on. Some of them were practically fresh from the Holds, used to sitting around doing whatever it was Holders did. Caden had never really understood, or cared. She figured it didn't require a lot of physical activity.
Unarmed defense? Yes, the previous Weyrlingmaster had worked with them on that, but once again Caden had the benefit of previous training. Honestly it felt like she was cheating, sometimes, but M'ta had stayed true to his word, not mentioning her past. Of course, that had the side effect of forcing her through lessons once again. Still, she nodded at his instructions, moving off to face the opponent closest to her size: Er'ani, around her age and only an inch shy of her six feet, the one with the near white blue. M'ze might be near her age, too, but he was far smaller. Much better suited to Mo'rya.
Caden dropped into a comfortable crouch as she squared off versus Er'ani, angled sideways to present a smaller target. The first attack she dodged by instinct, swatting his fist aside and making a little scoffing noise when he so obviously pulled his punch. "I can take it," she snapped, frustrated by his hesitation - what was he worried about, hitting a girl? She hardly counted. Only after a moment did she realize maybe he was holding back because M'ta had told them not to hurt each other, or he was worried about hitting a goldrider. Well, either answer was silly, and she wasn't about to put up with it - except that worrying about it distracted her for the fight long enough for Er'ani to attempt to sweep her legs out from under her. She attempted a hop up and backwards, hoping to clear his attempt... otherwise she'd be in for an embarrassing sprawl on the floor.
Nitrath was worrying at her back foot - a patch of hide there had gone near white, and she didn't know why. Caden had assured her that they would go to the Healers if the color hadn't come back by tomorrow, but for now the Gold couldn't get her mind off it. As soon as Behruth started speaking, though, she uncurled, leaving off to pay attention to her teacher. Careful of her now-hardened spikes, the Gold reached out for a ball, swatting one playfully in Epifayrmuth's direction as she did. The bronze wasn't the most fun-loving of her siblings, but he was better than Lketh on her other side. Tossing the ball up, she figured she could go after the albino, since Hers was fighting His. Caden thinks this is too easy, the Gold said, with a gentle touch of humor for Hers' mind, and a slightly sideways bounce. However, she is underestimating Lketh's, I think - Oops, almost lost it - So we shall have to wait and see.

Mo’rya trotted back into lessons with an expectant air, although he really wasn’t sure what to expect from the brownrider who’d taken over their classes, probably less fun stuff than this morning’s running and swimming, okay running with no real purpose seemed kind of pointless but since before he tended to run everywhere anyway it hadn’t been all that hard, not as hard as some people had been making out anyway. The swimming ad been fun though, Epifayrmuth had liked being it and had seemed to want to get in a record number of tags.
When he found out what the afternoon schedule was the bronzeweyrling was less than impressed, he didn’t really want to hurt people, or look stupid, which he was probably going to; his brothers always teased him that he fought like a girl.
Er, so… what was he supposed to do about this? Mo’rya faced his opponent with the same kind of helpless look on his face that a small animal might have when faced with a hunting canine. Eventually, since it seemed he was supposed to be attacking, the boy flung out a couple of half hearted punches, trying hard not to look like a girl, he was so not convinced about this.
Epifayrmuth rose slowly and stretched himself out once Behruth was done speaking, then turned to one side and batted Nitrath’s sneak ball attack back toward the gold with his tail before he retrieved a ball off his own and obediently began bouncing. Mo’rya is hesitant about this exercise, and too concerned about what he looks like. The bronze reported solemnly, a tone out of keeping with the look of the small bronze bouncing a ball on his nose. He has made an attack but there is no force behind it. It seems likely that a counterattack at this point would easily defeat him.

Ashlyn - 2 2. Er'ani - 9 3. Mor'ya - 3 4. Caden - 8 ResultsEr'ani vs. Caden: Caden didn't quite clear Er'ani's leg sweep. Whether it's an awkward stumble or a light fall is Ruby's choice. Caden will make the next attack. Mor'ya vs. Leilani: Way to go Mor'ya. You hit a girl. xP Leilani attacks next. Pick a number between 1 and 4 again, not repeating. Leilani will get what's left over. ^^ Well, at least he wouldn't have to gripe at anyone for hesitating too long. M'ta pushed the poorly shorn hair from his eyes, the slight tension to the line of his shoulders betraying a soreness he was stubbornly refusing to let interfere with the lesson. Mental note: change weyrs so he could get off the couch. Great. He had a bunch of wimps and no-nothings. Minus an exception here or there, he'd pretty much be working from scratch. Thank you nameless temp. The brownrider let them continue a little longer in the hopes that it might yield some better results. Maybe. Leilani eyed the tallish boy. She wasn't at all sure about this. Fighting a child didn't seem right at all. He definitely wasn't her idea of what bronzeriders should be. Resolving to just let him strike at her - he didn't seem to have any heart behind it at all - the older girl ducked aside from his punches. One, though, caught her across the eye. It was glancing. The scrape of knuckles across her brow, though, opened up a cut. One hand to her eye, the other gaping at Mor'ya in shock, Leilani looked down at the little bit of blood smeared across her fingers. "You-you cut me!" she exclaimed, her voice rising into a higher register at the end. Suddenly she flung herself at Mor'ya, long nails reaching to make mincemeat of the colorful boy's face. (Apparently his age didn't mean that much when Leilani was bleeding. Go figure.) Katearath eyed the ball she was supposed to be bouncing on her nose with some distaste. What good would that do? Did they need to bounce balls on their noses to flame Thread? Nevertheless, she was a good girl and did as told, carefully mouthing the ball and tossing it much like Behruth had. The mint-colored green bounced it tentatively on her nose. Don't worry, Epifayrmuth. Mine does not intend to strike a chi-Here she lost track of her ball and it plopped right in front of her, a shade of orange very near to red dominating her eyes. Mine is bleeding, she hissed. And not at all happy with Epifayrmuth's.You are down a point, Katearath. Behruth remained unpertrubed, his ball bouncing in steady rhythm. Good. You are keeping good track of Yours'. Make sure to include actions, too. Mine currently isn't doing anything but watching. He thinks that more training is needed. He also thinks he might have to intervene between Epifayrmuth's and Katearath's. He hopes not.Behruth stopped bouncing the ball and caught it neatly in mouth again. This is too easy for you. Let's make it harder. Now bounce the balls around in a circle, like this. The brown bounced his ball toward Nitrath.

Mo’rya actually looked quite stunned when one of his half hearted blows connected, he opened his mouth to apologise, and shut it again. He was supposed to hit her, he thought, or she was supposed to get out of the way, which she’d been doing fine at up until now. He couldn’t really see why she looked so shocked; it was bound to happen sooner or later.
If anything the boy looked even more stunned when the older girl came flying for him, all nails and fury, and fell back two swift paces rasing his arms to try and deflect her blows, protect his eyes (why did girls always go for your eyes?), and hopefully keep her hands away from his hair. He was really going to have to find a way to make the briad more spiky if they were going to do this all the time…
Near the ceiling a bright golden firelizard emerged with a confused little chirp and an inquiry for the one not engaged in combat. Was she supposed to be doing anything about this? Ghost understood that hatchlings sometimes had to learn the hard way but she really didn’t want her bonded de-eyed.
Epifayrmuth gave his green sister as much of a look as he could manage while bouncing a ball on his nose, which turned out not to be much and the bronze had to give his ball several quick correcting bounces to keep from losing it entirely. Yours will be fine, Mo’rya was not being serious enough about this combat to cause more than a trivial injury.
After a short pause the bronze continued his report. Mo’rya is surprised that he even managed to land a blow, he does not understand his opponent’s motivation in this all out attack, nevertheless, he is giving ground and attempting to block the attack. He thinks his hair should be spiky.

So close, but not quite. The heel of Caden's boot caught in the fabric of Er'ani's pants, arresting her jump mid-flight. This wasn't a great position to be in - one leg stuck out in front of her, her behind looking like the most likely part of her to hit the ground first - so she twisted mid-air, straightening her body out so she took the fall on her shoulder. Not, perhaps, the most subtle of recoveries, but the one that got her out of range, where she really could recover, rather than jump right back in to the fray.
And that was exactly what she did; curling into a less vulnerable position, she popped back to her feet, keeping an eye on Er'ani the whole time. Her generally deadpan expression had taken on a hint of something; maybe exhilaration, maybe danger. Either way, this felt good. It had been too long since she practiced with an opponent. Luckily for Er'ani, nothing would make her lose control and do actual damage; unluckily for him, he didn't know that, and a six-foot girl he just knocked over with a sudden mysterious glint in her eye wasn't exactly a reassuring sight. For good reason.
A sudden lunge towards him, a carefully calculated feint from the left, then a slippery twisting of her right hand over whatever attempt he made to fend her off. She intended to get a hold of his wrist and twist his arm down and around, then up behind his back. Ideally. If she caught him.
Nitrath had gotten her bounces sorted out while she wasn't speaking, but then her turn came around again. Mine is, uh... The gold hesitated, pink tingeing her eyes in the dragon equivalent of a blush. Hers was attempting to mislead Lketh's, and while Nitrath didn't exactly approve of that, she didn't want to give Caden's game up, either. Instead, her tone took on a touch of chagrin, laced with pride in Hers' abilities, even if she didn't quite approve of the means. Caden is attempting to... attack... Lkeths' left side, but really - Oops, she'd gotten distracted trying to figure out how not to give Caden away without lying, and lost her ball. Springing to her feet, the Gold chased the bouncy thing down, eyes totally pink now. At least Caden's gambit was complete, and she could finish her report without worry. She had planned to take Lkeths' attention with the first attack, to distract him from her second. I cannot tell, yet, if the second was successful or not.

Oh dear. His attack had some effect. That…really wasn’t what Er’ani had been expecting at all. He had expected failure. Not near success. Thus when Caden fell he stepped back, blinking in astonishment. It had worked. Kind of. Except oh dear….he knew that look. That was the 'you are about to get pounded' look. The blueweyrling swallowed against the sudden lump in his throat as the goldweyrling faced him. Why did she have to be a girl. He was used to getting owned. He always got pounded at Benden. But at least there it was mostly other boys. Not that he had anything against girls and oh shit. Here she comes.
Her lunge was expected. Er’ani’s eyes quite nicely picking out her movements. Breaking them down. His brain worked much better than his body did. The teen lived in the realm of strategy. He knew how it was supposed to work. Just not how to get his body to respond. Thus he saw the goldrider’s feint for what it was and he pivoted to keep his body facing her. Eyes narrowing he crouched and stepped forward to try and push his shoulder into her chest, just as she made a grab for his wrist. He felt her grip catch around his wrist and gave a soft grunt as he shifted back and struggled to break loose. If he couldn’t then he’d likely be at her mercy. Not a good thing.
Lketh watched his ball with unerring precision, nose bumping it back into the air at different angles as his brain marked trajectory perfectly. This was fun! He liked numbers. Ermine is surprised his attack on…. He had forgotten her name. Whoops. My clutchsister’s bonded worked. He was expecting to lose. She makes him nervous now. He saw her feint and seeks to counteract with his weight but she has seized his wrist. He thinks he is doomed now. The entire time he bounced his own ball, pausing attention briefly to watch his golden sister chase down her own ball. Well then he should keep the ball rotating. Yes he should. He wanted to count how many times they could complete the circle. Couldn’t do that without keeping the game going. With a happy chirp he headbutted his ball to Katearath.

Laurels to the goldweyrling. Mor'ya vs. Leilani: It's all right, Mor'ya. Don't defend yourself. Your opponent is fail enough to win the match for you all on her own. Finish out your sparring matches. On to something else. ^^ M'ta's attention was stolen more by Leilani's wild flight at Mor'ya, but he didn't do anything to intervene just yet. It would be fairly ridiculous if their bronzeweyrling couldn't fend off wild female flailing. No more than a glance was spared the gold. She didn't look like she was going to throw herself in, so she wasn't his concern. Dark eyes narrowed as the greenweyrling managed to trip over Mor'ya's foot in her unthinking attack. The girl fell to the floor and sat there, looking nothing if not confused by her own behavior. Taking another moment to gauge Caden and Er'ani, M'ta clapped his hands briskly. "That's enough. Come on." Turning on a heel, the brownrider exited the weyrling barracks and drew up alongside a low table. (Or, rather, an M'ta-sized table. Though it would probably be wise for any weyrlings who may have noticed to keep their mouths shut.) He gestured to the weapons laid out there. All wooden, practice weapons. "Everyone gets a dagger. Then you pick one of these others." He gestured to the dirk, club, gloves with the hard plates laid inside, throwing knives, bow and bola...all made of light wood that would sting but do little more when used in practice. "In two months' time, there will be a proficiency test in whichever weapon you choose. If you impress me enough, you'll get the real thing. It's going to go in order of least disappointing to most. And believe me, you all need a whole lot of work to get anything from me. Caden, you're first. Then Er'ani. Mor'ya." Once he'd finished listing the order off, M'ta turned away without watching the selection. "Meet me at the glade where your dragons are." Very good. All of you, Behruth commented. But we still need to work on doing more than one thing at once. When you get bigger, you will be part of wings. You will need to listen to Yours, but you will also need to listen to the dragon leading you. Mine is going to blindfold all but two of you. Those two will be the first 'wingleaders.' Everyone will get a turn.Just beyond the glade was an obstacle course of logs and bridges leading through the trees (not so high as to be too dangerous) and over the river in a convolution of pathways. It was a project that had taken the brownpair several days of work, but now it was complete. "Please lead your dragons to the four starting points. It's your job to make sure they get to the other side, and it's the 'wingleader's' job to direct his two dragons so they don't get in anyone's way. Epifarymuth, you have Nitrath and Lketh. Tenloceth will guide the other two. Ready? Go."

Easy enough, Caden thought, stepping clear of the Blueweyrling's shoulder and using his own momentum against him. She slipped behind him as he attempted to escape, twisting his arm up his back and tangling her fingers in his hair so she could force his head forward with the other hand. Pretty effectively disabled, if she thought so herself. She held the position for just a minute, letting Er'ani struggle, before M'ta clapped and she let him go as quickly as she'd disabled him. Offering him a friendly hand to shake and what could pass as a smile - no hard feelings, right? - Caden followed the Weyrlingmaster, automatically leading the pack whether she'd meant to or not.
Weapons, hmm? Interesting. Caden had always been a dagger girl herself, though as she'd been mostly a Threadfall fighter at Benden - before the last, disastrous battle, anyway - so she hadn't had much need for anything else. The dirk was the obvious choice, or maybe the gloves with the plates, although that would be a different sort of fighting. And of course, when it came down to it, she might be able to beat the snot out of the Weyrlings, but she didn't really have strength on her side, when it came down to fighting actual riders. So her hand hovered over the near-sword, passing over the gloves as well. Throwing knives. Her aim over distances had never been good, she might as well work on it. She picked one of the little blades up, flipping it tip over hilt to test the balance. "I'll take throwing knives." Only once she said it did it occur to her that throwing knives were, of course, M'ta's own favored weapon. Oh well, no one said she had to keep them.
Once the others picked their weapons, Caden headed for the glade, considering who'd gotten what. Her thoughts were interrupted, though, when she spotted the dragons. Caden had never really been one for blatant shows of emotion, but Nitrath appeared to be the exception. How're you doing, Nite? she asked, looping an arm up over the Gold's shoulders. Odd to think that she wouldn't be able to do that for much longer. Not ideal, my Caden. It distracts me when you try to sneak - I lost my ball, Nitrath added, clearly disappointed in herself. Don't worry, now we get a second chance. Ready? Caden asked, gesturing at M'ta's blindfolds. Ready.
Once the blindfold was in place, Caden lent Nitrath her eyes, using a hand on the Gold's neck to give her a physical reference point. Momentarily, they were in place. Epifarymuth? Should we go?

Bah. Beaten by a girl. Oh well. There were worse things in life really. Er’ani didn’t struggle much once it was obvious he was caught. Didn’t really see a point. She was going to win anyway. Yep see there was the clap signaling the end of the session. The teen took Caden’s hand anyway and gave it a brief shake returning her smile with a half one of his own. Eh it was what it was. Stuffing his hands in his pockets the bluerider dipped his head, to let his mess of hair hide his eyes, and shuffled after the goldweyrling, M’ta, and the rest of the class. Hopefully the violence was done for the lesson? Violence only begets more violence Ermine. Er’ani smiled. Indeed.
The boy stood towards the back of the class examining the weapons as one might examine a venomous snake. Really? And they were going to be tested? Fuck his life. Well at least they were wooden? Eyeing them all carefully he sighed and first took a dagger as instructed. Close range combat wasn’t his thing. He didn’t have the grace required. So then something long range. Caden had chosen the throwing knives which really was kind of surprising but whatever. Reaching over Er’ani grabbed the bow. Long range and he could use it more as a threat then an actual weapon. You didn’t have to hit someone to get them to drop weapons at range. Perfect. Grabbing the bow he moved to go find Lketh.
The little albino was still bouncing the ball and counting silently in his head. When Er’ani appeared he neatly caught the ball and lowered it to set it gently on the ground. Brushing an affirmative feeling across Behruth’s mind Lketh submitted to being blindfolded. The sun was beginning to hurt so it was rather nice to be able to rest his eyes. Rubbing between the albino’s head knobs the teen sent the little dragon off letting the pale hatchling borrow his eyes as he was used to doing when the sun got too bright. Ambling off in the weird gait of his, the little male paused only momentarily to brush a questioning feeling across his bronze sibling’s mind. Where to?

((Latepost, which is les dinky than I planned))
Mo’rya just looked somewhat stunned as his fearsome opponent managed to trip over and land on the mat, looking just as confused as he did. He really hoped M’ta wasn’t about to make them do it again, it was bad enough the first time. Okay, technically he’d won, but only because Leilani had fallen over. However the end of the match wasn’t the reprieve he’d hoped for and the bronzeweyrling just gave the brownrider’s back a betrayed look as the man left. Mo’rya was still going to have a wooden dagger when he had a long grey beard, he just knew it.
Picking up one of the weapons he was sure he was doomed to have forever he watched as the first two weyrlings picked out the best distance weapons (there was no way he was picking up that bola, he’d only hurt himself with it, he could tell), looking over the remaining choices he sighed, the sooner he picked something the sooner he could get on with something better, the dirk would do, at least it looked long enough to keep insane greenweyrlings at bay.
Epifayrmuth waited with barely concealed impatience, flicking his ball from claw to mouth and back again, it seemed Mo’rya did not think he’d do well with the fighting exercises and the bronze wondered if he should bring that to Behruth’s attention, but the time for talk seemed to be over for now. Something much more interesting was beginning. Once he had his bonded the young bronze trotted to his starting point and brushed his awareness lightly against his siblings’. Yes, let’s go. Although Epifayrmuth lacked arrogance, he didn’t lack a tactical mind and this looked to be just his sort of game.
