“Nice to meet you, Auo,” Pasine greeted incorrectly, not fully decoding Shei’s infant talk. But this was one thing that she didn’t need to understand completely, since the flitter’s tail flick and Shei’s clambering onto her cot told all. Then Shmee came back and Pasine was submitted to the fine feeling of having her hair brushed out. It was extremely relaxing; the only thing she could think of being more relaxing was sleeping. In fact, she could feel her drug heavy eyelids drooping now…
But Pasine was snapped out of her half-awake state as Shmee offered getting Shei off of the cot. “It should be fine, just as long as she doesn’t move up any further,” she replied with a weary smile and a glance at the distance between her wounds and the small girl. She figured she or her mother could stop the little girl if she ever made a lunge, which was doubtable.
Then Danar asked for a conference with the Weyrwoman, and Pasine exchanged glances between the two of them curiously. But she was getting tired (talking is rather exhausting on a recovering body, you know) and figured it was something that she couldn’t do anything about. Seriously, what was a bed-ridden Candidate going to do about anything?
Pasine sighed and waved the two off gently, replying softly, “I don’t mind. I am actually getting a bit tired, truthfully.” But she wasn’t at the point of exhaustion yet, so the patient turned her attention to the smallest two of her little welcome-back-to-the-real-world party. Looking at the snuggling Arlo (Shmee had mentioned his true name just a minute or so ago), the patient smiled and reached out a hand to rub his head.
She had only thought that flitters were good for errands and things, but she supposed their companionship was nice every once in a while. She’d be sad when he left though, since Danar certainly could not stay by her side forever. He would fall back in chores, get kicked out of Candidacy and lose his bronze! No, she couldn’t let that happen. Pasine could spend time alone in a sterile Infirmary! It would only be for a few days… with plain white surroundings… with sick people all around her… and fussy nurses… without her sewing or scrolls… gulp.

Danar ran a hand through his messy hair. “Nah we won’t be long at all. Promise, you should try and get some rest.” he smiled at Pasine before squeezing her hand once and heading out the door. Shards how was he going to start off? He decided it was best to tell her the entire story so T’rid wouldn’t be able to somehow turn it around on him later. Leaning against the wall he took a deep breath to steady himself before speaking. If he got in trouble so be it, but he had to do something about the ring. This was his only hope for getting it back.
“Weyrwoman I was hoping you could help me with something.” Danar began his voice only slightly pleading. “Two seven days ago a boy I am friends with C’oar and myself did something a bit stupid. You see C’oar had gotten attacked by the Weyrleader’s mander and was looking for a way to pay it back. He asked me for help and we decided to trap the little creature in a trunk. We were not planning on hurting it I swear. Anyway we needed bait so like an idiot I decided to use this ring I had as bait. We ended up trapping the creature but then T’rid showed up and things got, well nasty, to put in nicely. He confiscated the ring even though I begged him not to and even said I would take any other thing he could dish out as punishment in exchange.” He paused to note her reaction before continuing. “You see the ring was a gift from my mother. She died 5 turns ago from a fever. She got the ring from her mother and grandma got it from hers. It is a family heirloom passed down from daughter to daughter and seeing how my mom didn’t have any daughters she gave it to me to give to my daughter or son someday. That ring is more precious to me than anything. I was wondering if you could ask T’rid to give it back. I don’t care what I have to do in return. I just really need it back. I was stupid for even using it in the first place. You know boys though they don’t use their brain a lot of the time.” he trailed off to wait for her answer. The worst she could do was say no and then he would be back at square one.
