Danar walked through the jungle. The dry leaves cracking under his feet as he made his way to a place he remembered from his childhood. Finally the clearing came into view and he stopped to take a deep breath before pushing past the tangle of vines and entering the small clearing. It was exactly as he remembered. He had often gone to this place with his mother. It was the very clearing where he had also buried the little bronze flitter, in fact the small rock marking it’s grave was still there.
The candidate crouched before the stone and drew a hand over it’s smooth surface before sitting in the dry undergrowth and closing his eyes. He let his mind drift back to happier times. Opening his eyes, he stared into the canopy. “Mom Shmee’s dead.” That was the first time he had allowed himself to say it, and somehow, it was the final key to unlock the tears he had yet to shed.
Danar let the tears fall unchecked. He cried for Shmee, for the weyr, for the deaths of dragons and riders that were still happening due to the poison. “I feel so helpless. I am just a stupid worthless candidate who can’t even impress. What the hell can I do to help!” He yelled to the sky, pouring out every drop of frustration he had felt since Aslath’s last clutching. The burly lad wiped at his eyes and took a shuttering breath listening to the quiet of the jungle.
Wait…quiet? The jungle was never silent unless something was frightening the occupants. Danar scanned the undergrowth around him for movement, slowly rising from the ground and tensing to run. “Is someone there?” He managed to choke out past the lump in his throat, picking up a large branch from the forest floor. If it was a feline, chances where there were more than one but he wasn’t going to give up without a fight.

The bushes moved, and swayed slightly, and then a brown dragon head appeared ... though small. Frosstyth finished shoving his way through the underbrush, into the opening, and stopped there, collecting his haunches up underneath his already substantial bulk as he sat down.
C'oar appeared, then, from behind his dragon, having been following through the hole the dragon had forced. He never said a word to Danar. He didn't have to. He knew what Danar was dealing with at the moment ... and he also knew that chiding his friend for wandering off into the dangerous forest alone was not a good way to help his friend out. Though ... making the Weyr rescue Danar after he got into trouble after doing that was no way for Danar to help the Weyr out, either.
And as such ... C'oar just held his silence as he walked quietly - and understandingly - toward Danar. He stopped next to the lad, and just looked at him, in complete and total silence. He didn't move, he didn't speak. He just stood there, and looked at him with a completely neutral expression.
C'oar understood ... he understood all to well. But ... he was also thankful that his dragon had noticed Danar wandering off into the woods. And as such, the weyrling pair had followed. Danar was safer now, than he had been.

Danar blinked as Frosstyth pushed his way into the clearing. He relaxed slightly. The lad knew this dragon. It was C’oar’s dragon. The candidate looked up as C’oar entered and walked up to him. The weyrling’s silence unnerved the boy and he shifted like he had been caught doing something he wasn’t supposed to. “You need something?” He asked abruptly. The silence was weighing on him.
“I….” Danar paused and took a deep breath. “I come here to think. Did Pasine send you? If she did just let her know I’m ok.” He sat down on the forest floor next to the stones and cast a appreciative eye over the brown dragonet. “You got a good one. He’s gonna be big. What’s his name?” Changing the subject was safe. Anything besides the topic of the weyr’s current state and Shmee’s death was safe. He was pretty sure C’oar wasn’t going anywhere anytime soon and sitting in silence bothered him.

C'oar shifted his weight to his other foot. "Pasine didn't send me. We saw you leaving, and we followed. Mostly to make sure nothing ate you." He admitted, finally breaking his silence. He looked over at Frosstyth, who lowered his broad head slightly, looking around cautiously. Even though the dragonet held no memories of feline attacks, he was instinctively wary this faw away from the others. C'oar shook his head slowly. "I don't need anything. Not that I'm aware of, anyway."
He watched as Danar looked Frosstyth over. "Frosstyth. But I just call him Frosst, most of the time. It's shorter, and he answers to it." C'oar shrugged, and found himself a seat near where Danar was sitting. "He is a big one, that is right. Kinda hard to imagine that a puny thing like Corinth sired these big dragons. He must have been stunted somewhere along the way." C'oar shrugged.
Deciding that there wasn't much to be done at the moment, Frosstyth went and found himself a spot to sprawl out in the leaves, not far from the two lads. Curling his neck around to rest his snout on his own elbow, Frosstyth snorted softly, blowing a few leaves away from his snout.

Danar gave a small chuckle as C’oar called Corinth puny. “Aslath wasn’t the biggest queen either but their offspring sure turned out lovely.” The lad outstretched a hand towards the brown before eyeing C’oar. “Mind if I pet him?” The candidate asked quietly. He had missed out on impressing and, although he would never admit it, he was rather disheartened by the fact that none of the dragons had found him worthy.
“I just needed to get away to think ya know. I’m worried about the weyr and all. With Shmee dead that basically leaves T’rid in charge until Millieth rises and a new leader is picked. I know you feel the same way I do about T’rid. Things feel off. To loose and disjointed.” He sighed loudly before shaking his head. “What is your take on the situation?” Danar asked curiously before motioning again for Frosstyth to come closer so he could scratch the dragons ridges.

Frosstyth rumbled softly, and nudged the boy with his snout, before edging closer. C'oar looked over at Danar, and then the brown, before shrugging. "So long as you don't try to harvest anything off him, I don't care if you pet him." he said, sounding serious. But it was made quite in joking fun, trying to get Danar to cheer up a little bit.
"Things are going to be weird for a while, that is certain. I don't know if I trust T'rid to run this place, without tearing it to shreds on a whim. He seems to do things just cause he can ... or doesn't cause he doesn't wanna. What an ego." C'oar remarked. "Speaking of ... did you ever manage to get your ring back?"
Granted, the ring was another sore subject, but ... it was better than sulking about the fate of the Weyr. Just as personal but something that was slightly easier to deal with, thought-wise.
Anything ... even if it was merely the lesser of two evils.

Danar concentrated on the small brown’s eye ridges, smiling as he heard a hum from the creature. He waved off C’oar’s joke and smiled. “Harvest something from him? Why C’oar the way you talk you would think you have been trying to culture mold on the poor thing.” The lad joked back giving the other boy a small shove.
The dragon and C’oar were doing wonders to improve Danar’s mood. That is until the bronze rider was mentioned. “Piss on T’rid.” Danar shot back slightly agitated by the mention of their idiot Weyrleader. “If he lets anything else happen I swear I won’t rest until we lynch the moron. As far as the ring, I never did get it back. I told Shmee about it and she had seemed willing to help, but then…well you know.” He trailed off looking up into the dense undergrowth.
“Pasine’s real tore up about it. She really looked up to Shmee. Lots of people did. She was hope for the weyr and now. Now all we have is T’rid.” Danar balled his hand into a fist and pounded the ground. “What we need is something big to help the weyr. Like one of the queens rising. It would do wonders to improve moral. Unfortunately neither of them look even close to rising.”

C'oar nodded, watching as Frosstyth really got into this scratching his eye ridges idea. Wobbling his head up and down with the scratching, the brown tried to help, even though all he was doing was interferring. C'oar chuckled at the mold comment, and took the shove in good humor. Taking a step back, he regained his balance and remained there, a small grin on his face.
"Piss on T'rid ... nice sentiment, that. I might try it someday." C'oar said, sounding quite serious, though it was plainly in jest. There was no way C'oar was going to do something as disgusting as that ... or give T'rid an opening for jabbing back at him in some morbid, twisted way. "I wonder if we can figure out where Stupid hid the ring? Without getting caught, that is. I don't look to have another run in with T'rid's dragon." T'rid, C'oar was pretty sure he could take on the self important snot. But that big honking bronze was a whole other matter. And with that thought in mind, C'oar summoned Storm from whatever mischeif the bronze was getting into now.
Storm appeared in a moment, popping into existance overhead and dive bombing Frosstyth's head to perch there. Chirping heroically, the bronze struck a pose. C'oar shook his head, at that. "Silly twit. Storm. Can you spy on Stupid, and see if you can find Danar's ring?" He asked.
Storm lost his pose, sitting down and cocking his head to one side. Chirp?
"Danar's ring. Remember? Shiny?" C'oar asked, holding one hand up with first finger and thumb close together, to signify about how big the ring was. "Small shiny?"
Storm cheeped, then, and jumped into the air to vanish between before his wings had even fully extended.
"Well .... I have no idea if that did any good or not." C'oar mentioned. "I just hope he doesn't try to chew Stupid's head off, as much as I wish he would." he remarked.
"Pasine ... yes. I imagine a lot of people are. Even those who had never liked her miss her. She was the leader, and kept us going to right way. I don't think a queenflight would help much, though ... while it would boost morale, it would also deflate it. After all, it'll be a reminder that Aslath will never rise again."

Danar chucked as Frosstyth bobbed his head. It reminded him of the way some runners bobbed their heads when you scratched them. The lad increased pressure and listened attentively to C’oar. “Could you imagine? Pissing on T’rid. It would be a sight that’s for sure.” He smiled as the bronze struck a pose. “Why C’oar he has a bigger head then you.” The candidate said in mock surprise clearly baiting the other boy.
Danar frowned and stopped scratching Frosstyth for a second. “Well I wouldn’t want your flitter getting killed on my account C’oar. I really do hope he doesn’t attack Stupid. I know T’rid can’t withhold impression from you anymore but he could probably make life a living hell for you if he wanted.” He trailed off to rub more industrially at a particularly dry spot on Frosstyth. If his current size was anything to go by the dragon would be a beast when finally grown.
The candidate nodded as C’oar spoke about the queen flight. “Be that as it may with a flight comes a clutching, and with a clutching comes a hatching. A flight would lead to more hope for the weyr and who knows maybe Millieth will clutch a queen. That would be cause for everyone to rejoice.” The lad nodded agreeing with himself. Being weyrbred he was very aware of how upbeat everything became when eggs were expected. It was the time when the weyr was at it’s best emotionally.

"I can imagine. It would be most satisfying ... if one could get away with it, that is." C'oar chuckled, in agreement, as he moved to scratch Frosstyth's other side. "Silly beast. Hold still." He said, poking the dragon's neck with one stiff, thick finger. Obediently, Frosstyth held still, and warbled softly in pleasure at the scratchings he was getting.
"He won't get killed... even if he does get into a tiff with Stupid, he won't get killed. He's gobs bigger than Stuipid, and he can also go between, which is something Stupid can't do." C'oar pointed out. "He'll manage ... he's a clever bronze." he mentioned, before pausing, and giving Danar a strange look. "What? Who's head is? Frosst's? Obviously."
Well ... maybe Danar had a point about flights. C'oar was by no means a weyrbrat ... but he had been around for two clutches already. Maybe he just wasn't as excitable as most ... and he really hadn't noticed any growing excitement in the Weyr around those times. Anticipation, yes. Excitement? Maybe he should get his head out of the sand and pay more attention to everyone around him. Just because he tended to be a stable individual with little in the way of mood swings didn't mean everyone else around him was, too, now did it?
Once gone from where the boys were standing and talking, Storm reappeared over a tree ... a tree he had promptly forgotten some time ago. He flitted from branch to branch in the tree, hunting in all the forks of the limbs, scratching and digging at the mosses and tree litter that accumulated in those places. Finally, he found what he wanted: the ring! Shiny! He had won it from Stupid, many months ago. And it was his prize!! The stupid Stupid would not get it! Ever. But ... his wanted it. For something. So ... he would give it to his. And with that, Storm leapt into the air, clutching the ring to his breast as he zipped between again. Reappearing where C'oar and Danar were, he landed on Frosstyth's now-still head, and held up the shiny triumphantly, with a bugling cheep.
"Look!" C'oar said, pointing at Storm. "He got it! What do you know?? Clever lad!"

Danar gave a smile to the brown weyrling. “Nah I know he would dominate Stupid. I was just worried about Corinth. One snap and that’s it for your Storm.” His brows furrowed in what could be worry. The feeling quickly passed at C’oar’s question however, and the candidate couldn’t hold back the laugh that escaped. “Not his head.” He gave Frosstyth’s head a brisk rub. “I was talking about Storms. The way he was parading around and posing. I said his head, meaning his ego. Is bigger than yours.” The light tone of Danar’s voice, as he made the comment, made the fact that he was joking blindingly apparent. “Come now C’oar are you really that dense?” The lad adopted a look of false shock before again succumbing to laughter.
Storm’s triumphant entrance was not lost on Danar who jumped from his seated position and gave a victory whoop. “Storm you clever devil! By Faranth you are getting the best cuts from my herdbeast tonight little fellow. Damn C’oar you have one smart flit there.” The candidate smiled broadly as Storm landed and displayed the ring. “I owe you guys big time.” The gratitude in Danar’s tone was unmistakable and he itched to take the ring from the bronze. ‘I can take it from him right? I mean he won’t be offended if I do?” The brown haired lad queried, raising an eyebrow as he regarded his friend.

C'oar nodded. "Corinth is something to worry about, indeed. Flitter or no flitter. He's too big to be roaring at people, I think." He nodded firmly, before laughing out loud at Danar's comparisons between the egos of those present. "I would tend to agree, yes." He chuckled. "But then … he is bronze, and that seems to go with the territory. So … he would think highly of himself, yes. Always being the center of attention … or trying to be." He nodded. Frosstyth rumbled softly, and adjusted where his legs were, kicking up a few leaves here and there, before sprawling on the ground with a happy huff.
"You are so going to spoil him rotten, you know that??! Then he'll be insufferable. But … I guess this time around, he deserves it." C'oar grinned, before reaching for the flitter. "You should be able to get it, but … no telling. Storm! Let us see?" He asked, holding a hand out for the ring.
Storm looked from one lad to the other, and peeped worriedly. They were going to take his shiney? His shiney! He had found it, carried it back! His shiney! Oh … his pet just wanted to see it? Well … that was okay, he supposed. And with a reluctant warble, he used both front feet to very, oh-so-carefully and tenderly deposit the mossy and dirty ring in C'oar's palm. He cheeped curiously, watching with attentivness as C'oar took the ring, and handed it to Danar. "There you go." He said, happily.
Storm peeped again, dancing in place, watching the transfer.

Danar gingerly took the offered ring and held it up to the light. “It seems no worse for wear. Hard to tell though with all the moss on it. Where the hell was the idiot keeping it?” He turned to look at Storm. “I wouldn’t be surprised if he did have moss growing in his weyr.” The candidate pocketed the ring intending to clean it up later. If it needed repairs he could always take it to the next gather and see what they could do.
Danar smiled at C’oar. “Thanks for all your help. First the cheering up and now the ring. Anything I can do to repay the favor?” The burly lad asked before sitting down to stroke Frosstyth again. “What are weyrling lessons like? We still don’t have a Candidate Master so I Have lots of free time now. Unless the headwoman finds me.” He made a face. “She really needs to get a hobby before she dies of stress.”

"Moss in his weyr ... " C'oar thought on that for a moment, and then couldn't help but laugh. Maybe so. C'oar had never really spent any time at all thinking about what the weyrleader's quarters were like. But after his encounter with trying to clean a rider's weyr? It really wouldn't surprise him to find moss in someone's room. What a mess!
Storm shreiked, jumping up and down when he saw the ring vanish into Danar's pocket. The traitor stole his shiny! Stole his shiney! It was his shiney, not Danars!!! Storm shrieked again, bouncing up and down in place and flapping his wings in agitation. The noise was reaching a level of decibles to really hurt the ears, and a pitch that almost couldn't be heard, it was so high. C'oar first clapped hands over his ears, and then reached for his own pockets. Did he have anything shiney in there?!
He dug through his pockets, and came up with nothing more than cookie crumbs, a nubby charcoal writing stick, some random peices of lint, some bits of dirt, and a small peice of flat metal he had cut off of one of his latest projects. Ahhhh ... maybe? He selected the bit of steel, and offered it to the screaming flitter. "Storm!" He shouted, to be heard.
Storm stilled for a moment, and looked away from Danar's pocket to C'oar's hand. His eyes riveted on the glinting bit of metal. Shiney? New shiney? Bigger shiney! And ... clean shiney! Bigger shiney! He dove for it, and snatched the bit of metal away from C'oar to promptly leap into the air and vanish between.
"Well .... that's a releif." C'oar said, rubbing his ears. He dropped the crumbs and dirt, returning the nubby back to his pocket. "Don't think anything of it, Danar. It's what friends are for." He assured him. "Just ... don't use it to bait Stupid again, okay?" He grinned at him slightly.

Danar covered his ears as Storm set up his racket. Holy cow it was enough to make his ears start bleeding. What in Faranth’s name was wrong with him? The answer came when C’oar pulled out the shiny piece of metal. Ah the flit thought he was stealing his prize. Whoops. The candidate breathed a sigh of relief as Storm accepted the alternate and blinked between.
Danar grinned back at C’oar. “Yeah friends are awesome. Maybe one day we can be on the same wing. One never knows.” He shook his head but also smiled at the barb about Stupid. “Yeah you can be sure that will never happen again. That was a nightmare.” He frowned as he thought back on the botched capture attempt. Come to think of it he hadn’t seen the mandyr since, and he had no desire to see him ever again.
The lad turned towards the big brown stretched out on the jungle floor. “We should probably get back before they send a search party out for us I guess. You gonna be able to move that lazy lump?” He teased lightly, gesturing towards Frosstyth.
