Imp bounded along ignoring the firelizards and the other salamandyrs unless they got in his way, the bronze had eyes only for his lovely pretty queen. She was wonderful, absolutely the best Pern had to offer, what other queen had such a fine shapely tail, such a shiny hide, such skill on the wing? None! Only Elegance had those qualities.
The gold turned for the jungle and Imp made a sharp turn to follow under her flightpath, his frill flicking up for a moment, then folding down flat against his neck again. Though it was undoubtedly the most impressive and prettiest of frills that adorned him it would slow him down if he showed it off. He’d just have to display to better effect when he had his love’s attention.
But… what was this? Imp looked at the noisy little brown out of the corner of his eye. Flying with one of the rival bronzes? Was that cheating? The firelizard was unhappy to be carrying such a burden, he spun and whirled, trying to shake his unwanted passenger off. Imp wished them both to continue, the brown to fall and the bronze to exhaust himself in breaking loose.
What now? What now? Imp was growing annoyed with all the noisy distractions in this chase, he wanted to hear only his prettylove’s sweet voice. Certainly he did not wish to hear Baby, and he wasn’t too pleased to see the blue go speeding past him. The only reason the singing blue could safely be ignored was his low endurance, had a brown or another bronze passed him like that Imp would have had to speed up. However, unlike strange little blues, he wanted to be in this for the long haul. He wanted to win.
Into the jungle, up a tree, quickly, quickly. Leap daringly from branch to hanging vine and on to the next branch. Run, run, leap, climb, duck. Imp weaved and danced his way after his quick, clever prettylove. He was proud of his skill in chasing through the trees. Yet something else was bothering him. Who was that shouting insults? A flash of golden hide behind told him. Another queen? But she wasn’t glowing, she wasn’t pretty and graceful, she was only a baby queenlet. Ignore the silly baby, concentrate only on prettylove.
Azrath walked alongside his rider, using a wing, a leg, or his tail to keep Darya from falling in the river and flying over various objects such as rocks and bits of wood. The blue had no idea chasing was so dangerous. Of course the bonded of Azrath’s lovelies had never hidden away from their chasers, the dragon vaguely understood this, and Darya’s body was responding to what Imp wanted, leaping lightly over things that weren’t there and tripping over things that were. Azrath would be happy when they found the firelizard queen’s bonded so that Darya would stop hurting herself.
Ah! Was that the one there? The healer with the brown dragon did have many firelizards, or was that someone else? Azrath couldn’t really remember. Well Darya seemed fixated on him, must be the right one. Indeed Darya was staring at R’wign with a predatory gleam in her eyes.

Hero followed Ellie like a small planet follows it’s glowing sun. Far enough away to avoid colliding into her, but close enough to bask in her bright warm light. Her barrel rolls drew an encouraging croon from the bronze and he mirrored her aerial antics almost perfectly. Ellie’s trill made the bronze want to sing and he hastened to draw closer to her. When she made her wide turn he banked to follow staying slightly behind and below her.
As the jungle came into view Hero crooned happily. Oh the bright sun was going to lead them through the jungle. What a nice playground for her to test them on. Suddenly however his bright sun veered overhead, doubling back. Folding one wing Hero dropped and banked to circle around and follow Ellie. Clever queen she was.
The sight that greeted Hero as he passed Voyager was bizarre to say the least. Why was that other bronze giving the little brown frill a ride? He gave a questioning flute in passing but didn’t care what the answer was. No all he cared about was the glowing object of his desire. Right now she was the center of his world.
Hero followed the gold diligently, never crowding, but keeping close enough so her movements wouldn’t throw him off the path she set for them to follow. As the sudden singing burst into his mind the bronze started and faltered a few wing beats, looking around wildly for the source. Ellie’s near collision drew a worried croon from Hero. Oh oh! Was his sunny little queen ok?
The answer to the bronze’s question came quickly as Ellie ducked into the trees to continue her chase. Hero followed, shooting through the foliage to send leaves swirling to the jungle floor.
The bronze kept purple whirling eyes on the golden form in front of him. She was the guiding light and if he lost her, it would not be good. He gave a high flute to spur her on. Lovely she was. The darkness only seemed to make her brighter. As bright as the sun ought to be. Because of that fact Brat’s insults where ignored. The other gold was obviously just jealous of the sun. Hero did not care about the fat little small wing. She was not his guiding light.
----
Onyx scampered after Ellie throwing glances upward every now and again to be sure he didn’t lose the glowing gold. Ah there she was. He hopped up on hind legs as she doubled back for a moment confused. But ah there! She was heading back to the trees. Clever Pretty! Trees good! Oh yes trees where very good! Onyx (like most mandyrs) was very much at home in the leafy canopy of the jungle. Following her would be so much easier now!
As Baby’s song burst into his head Onyx shrieked in annoyance. His stupid blue clutch brother was trying to take his pretty too! Ugly! Ugly no like baby. Baby dung head stupid! He announced to anyone that would listen. He almost made the pretty flier go boom! Brats entrance drew a further hiss from the dark brown. Stupid goldybabe butt face! Flier pretty! Onyx no like!
Onyx clambered up the nearest tree as Ellie entered the jungle. She was easy to follow with that bright hide. Leaping from branch to branch, his tiny claws easily finding purchase on the soft wood, he followed with minimal gliding. He had to save his wings for the pretty. For when he caught her it wouldn’t do to let her fall.

She was so captivating; Zeek had no problem keeping all his attention focused on her. He was getting better at that, even as other males zoomed forward and back, crossing his path so he had to loop horizontally out of the way, doing so with a mind to what she would see. His dodging loops were long barrel rolls, a slower mimic of her actions as he stayed on her trail, cooing to her. His perfectly proportionate wings afforded him a bit more maneuverability than either his lovely shiny sun, or the larger males that chased her, and he worked to make it count.
Corkscrewing towards the jungle when the bright and shiny banked, he followed at an easy distance, chirping curiously when she veered upwards into a wide loop, far enough back to watch and gaining some ground when she completed the move. He sidled off to the side and just back of her, delighting in the momentary thrill from riding her air currents before slipping out of the stream and looping behind her again, another barrel roll to show his agility. He was good enough for her! He’d prove it!
He faltered to the side when the singing suddenly barged into his mind, totally thrown off for a moment and losing his wonderful placing, which he had to pump hard to try and make up. He chattered in worry when the wonderful shiny almost did the same, right into a tree, then trilled in joy when she corrected her course and led them into the trees. He only vaguely registered the fact that there was another gold running along behind them, but his very small, very short attention was totally engrossed in the glittering form now flitting through the trees ahead of him.
She was indeed the brightest thing in the sky! Easy to follow in the gloom cast by the thick foliage. He wove back and forth, using some of his speedy advantage to careen through small spaces and over and under branches in a frolicking romp after her, never touching a thing in his delight. His flight was playfulness inherent, and it was all for her.

Storm twisted through a barrel roll around the turn, beating his wings hard and fast to try and make good time, cutting through the pack of chasers everywhere he could. Cutting corners, sometimes leaving the pack to do so to make time, and crooning occassionally whenever he thought there was a good chance that Elle would actually hear him. To the forest they went! Storm followed dilligently, though he did express worry and concern over Elle's near miss with a tree. Chasing through the forest worried him somewhat ... he'd barely survived his last chase through the forest. Never mind if he won it!
Behind him, blindly following in his draft, Voyager continued to try and loose his passenger, chirping in irritation. Though he did pause his gyrations for a moment to croon a reply to Elle when she noticed him. Not stress it? Ok, he could do that. Evening out, the bronze flitter starting putting more effort into jockeying for position to follow her, and less at trying to lose Aslan.
Aslan, for his part, posed dramatically for her when she came by. Aslan chase! Aslan chase through sky! Many follow, Aslan adore! Pretty love, fly true! Aslan follow! He assured her, confidently. So long as his mount didn't give out on him, that was. He started lashing at Voyager with his tail, urging him to go faster. Must catch! Go faster! Aslan catch! Aslan best! Gold star best! Aslan must catch! he insisted.
Annoyed immensly at the new torture he was being put through, Voyager swayed back and forth. But he noticed when Aslan started leaning to one side, every time he got near Storm again. Hoping that the annoyance would jump, Voyager swerved hard, almost straight into Storm. The older bronze could surely carry him better, anyway ... and free up Voyager to fly ahead. Which Voyager really wanted to do.
As the younger bronze swerved toward the older, Aslan's back feet paddled in excitement. Oh boy! Oh boy! They were getting close! Almost almost ... almost! The silly, color-blind mandyr had lost track of Elle in the crowd, and thus had assumed that Storm was her. Since he was nice and big, and flying strong ... and Voyager had been following him the whole time so doggedly. That one had to be her! And when Voyager got close enough, Aslan leapt, afraid that Voyager might get there first. His! He had won! And with his victory landing upon that broad back, he tried in earnest to twine.
Freed of his burden, Voyager shot ahead like he had a rocket strapped to his tail, zooming past the suddenly beleagured and startled Storm.
Storm squalled in surprise when he perceived to being attacked, his balance and concentration completely stolen. Tumbling through the air, he tried to shake his antagonist, trying really hard to dislodge the irritating little worm that apparently thought he was going to mate him. Hissing and snapping, Storm bit at the mandyr, before rebalancing and snapping his wings open to keep from pancaking himself on the ground at that speed.
Through it all, all three of them were ignoring the loud, precocious singing from Baby, concentrating on other things.
Aslan was a bit put out when he discovered his catch was not, after all, a queen. And quickly let go and leapt free before he got his head bit off. Because it was quite clear that that mount was going to be even harder to ride than the last one had been! He spread his wings, but still landed fairly hard, tumbling head over tail for a dozen or so spins. Finally stopping and righting himself, the brown mandyr shook his head. Whoa. What a landing! Hoping to his feet, he took off at a fast run, as fast as he could go ... he was all the way in back, now.
Storm, he was not pleased. He'd gone from being one of the fore runners to being near the back ... irritating little snot of a gay worm!

As Elegance turned into the Jungle, and Azaran did as well. Flicking his tail in thought as he spun and danced among the trees, the Bronze sped up and slowed down just enough to avoid most of the leaves and little branches that the trees thrust at him. Squawking unhappily as a horrendously sung song drifted through his mind, he too almost hit a tree as his concentration wavered. Little Green Hatchling! Barring his teeth as he ducked under a branch only to have to pull up immediately to avoid another, Azaran chattered to himself. He had thought his Brownannoyance was annoying... but this was absolutely ridiculous! A whole pack of the flightless ones were far, far worse than Dash and anything he had done.
Streaming through the leaves, the Bronze dropped down into the open space between the trunks of trees. No more leaves to obscure the Beauty's glowing form! Each time she dipped or moved, he felt awed, her glowing hide contracting over muscles. More majestic moves, more lovely, and more cunning! He would follow her no matter how deep they went into the forest.
But what was happening behind him? He chanced a look back, though it raised more questions than answers. Azaran refocused his swirling eyes on the fleeting form of Elegance. Why was there a running-annoyance riding on one of his fellow firelizards? Great Golds above, these flightless things were really turning into the bane of a flitters existence. He huffed, pumping his wings to again to gain some more speed, he didn't want anyone jumping on his back. He was already working hard enough keeping himself in the game, but with the added weight he surely would fail, and failure was never an option for anyone.
He preformed a barrel roll to avoid a tree trunk, all the while trying not to loose sight of Ellie's glowing form. She was like the northern star, she would lead them all through the hazy dark.

Baby was elated. It didn’t seem to matter that every creature present was cringing at his singing voice, or else their offense simply didn't register through the euphoric haze. His beautiful sunshine had looked at him! She had sung to him! He would catch her and bask in her glow forever! ~YOU BEW-TEE-FUL! YOU BEW-TEE-FUL! YOU BEW-TEE-FUL! IS TRUE!!~ The blue watched with rapt attention as Ellie turned and veered into the jungle. He would have squealed in delight had he not been so breathless. ~Come with MEEEEE! Into da TREEEEEES!~ He crooned, darting into the underbrush in pursuit.
It wasn't hard to keep sight of Ellie, highlighted as her glowing silhouette was against the jungle's gloom, but had she not been hindered by the low branches and vines that reached out to grab at anything that flew past it would have been becoming obvious that the blue was tiring. Thankfully, Baby was in his element as he slithered through the leaf litter, vaulting small twigs and pebbles with all the grace and brilliance he was capable of producing. Considering that showmanship was what he excelled at, the blue wasn't doing half bad. ~What simple is true! Baby LO-OOOOO-OOO-OOO-OOOOOO-VE YOUUUUU~ He crooned adoringly, positively starving for the attention only his glorious sun could provide.
And then it hit him hard enough to make him flinch and stop in his tracks. What was he doing on the ground?! His sun belonged high, high up in the sky! That was where he had to go if he wanted to catch her!! And then he spotted it –an ancient, grandmother of a tree, strewn with thick moss and hanging vines. Pouring all of his speed into the slight detour, Baby threw himself against the soft bark and began clambering skyward. He would climb to reach her! As high as he had to go! He'd tear the sky from around his beautiful sun and take it's place so she could shine even at midnight!! Bolstered by his own high hopes, he began singing with renewed enthusiasm. ~Baby SAW YOU FACE IN A COWDED PAAAAACE! AND HE NOT KNOW WHAAAAT TO DOOO, CAUSE HE NEEEVER BE WIT-
A brief pause.
~YOU RAISE BABY UUUUUUUUP SO HECAN STAND ON MAOOOOOWNTANS!~

Into the trees Ellie flew, her wings propelling her forward. Rather than fly one straight line, though, she spun - not consistently, but at odd intervals, showing off the length of her wings and her body. She used her size to her advantage, glowing like a light source in the darkened trees, and her path was becoming evident quite rapidly. Rather than head straight through the trees, or twist in a show of agility, the young gold was heading downward - down, fast, far, toward a sound like running water: she was headed for the river and the water fall so nearby. Shooting star, brightest light - if they could keep up with her through the trees and the branches, then they deserved her. Only then; no sooner, no later. She kept that thought in her mind as the purple swirls in her eyes sped up. Faster. Faster. And then something was calling to her in words. Something decidedly not male. Confused and alarmed, Ellie spun over onto her back, her wings spread out so that the tips brushed some of the leaves as she flew past. She glided upside down to get a good look at the oh-so-loud thing following after her and was surprised (and agitated) to see a gold salamandyr as the source of the insults being flung in her direction. Twittering in disapproval, Ellie flipped back over and then beat her wings roughly. That other gold thing was going to follow and insult her, was she? Well, she was not going to get away with that. No, Ellie wasn’t about to let her. She was the sun, and the weird small-winged thing was just a pale imitation. They would all see how their clever sun could fly. Glancing back behind her, Ellie was… startled, to say the least. Many of her small-winged chasers had taken to the trees. Did they think themselves more likely to catch her from up in the branches? She would not be Caught before she was ready and branches wouldn’t help them, didn’t they see? All that happened was that she could no longer admire them. Chirruping quietly to herself, Ellie ducked under a large vine hanging from one of the trees. They were still talking - talking to her in that way that the strange non-flyers spoke, because they couldn’t chirp and chatter properly. So she hadn’t lost them, those that vanished into the canopy. Maybe the other false-sun had frightened them. It was certainly a loud false-sun. It would’ve frightened her too, if she wasn’t the real sun, brightest in the sky. She couldn’t blame them if they were scared. Oh - but that brown frilly was jumping from one of her bronzes to the other…? Confusion swirled through her eyes. Had he Caught one of her bronzes…? How bizarre. The frills were very strange creatures indeed. Flicking her tail, Ellie chattered curiously back toward Voyager, Storm and Aslan - completely lost as to what was going on between those three, and not at all sure she liked it. Shouldn’t they all have been focusing on her instead of their game of catch-the-frill…? Well, if they wanted to be distracted, they would have a harder time keeping up. She’d see to that, yes she would, just as she would see to it that the false-sun was shown for what she really was. Ellie’s eyes whirled with a hint of scarlet - a very dramatic change from the normally good-natured queen. No other golds were allowed in her flight. Soon. Soon. Fluting musically back toward her chasers (inspired, in part, by the very off-pitch singing she was being bombarded with), Ellie gave another twirl in the air. Light broke through the branches, beginning to filter in, and she headed straight for it. Zeek’s tricks were not ignored, though; the brown was showing off for her, and he was doing a good job of earning her affection in the process. Ellie sweetly called back to him with a series of short chirps and flutes, each sound meant to encourage, to bait. Her brown beauty who had given her the gift was not forgotten, and she hoped he would not give up. Just as she hoped her other lovelies wouldn’t give up… but she was tired - tired of the ones that were hurting her other chasers, and taking the attention off of her. Time to deal with them accordingly. Through the trees she burst, coming out at the edge of the river. Ellie bugled back to her chasers, deliberately alerting them to her location, and then turned. Her wings beat hard, pushing her upward as she flew out over the river, following the current. The effort it took to increase her speed so much was draining, but it didn’t matter. What mattered was showing all of them who the Sun really was. Her eyes whirled scarlets and purples, and Ellie flew hard and fast -- right over the edge of the waterfall. But she didn’t drop to follow it, no, instead she kept going, at that exact same height. Her tail flicked teasingly behind her, beckoning them on… if they dared. She wanted to see the little running gold do that.
“PLEASE DON’T TAKE MY SUNSHINE AWAAAAAAAAAY~” Obnoxiously loud, who, R’wign? The brown rider gave a low snort, and then -- then blinked as a streak of gold not Ellie went running off in the direction of the fire lizards and salamandyrs. His head cocked to the side, and he stopped in his singing momentarily to stare in confusion. What gold - was that Dael…? But the crushed grass told another story, and his silent inquiry was quickly answered by the form of Lennae coming up next to him. The healer turned his head to look at her (because with only one eye, he had no other option) and lifted one hand to rub the tip of his nose. Her question made him shrug, obviously not sure what other reaction to have, and he gestured vaguely toward the woods. “Obviously,” he said with a distinct note of playfulness in his voice that even the most unobservant would catch, “Brat wants to Fly Ellie. I knew you wanted me, deep down. You tease.” His smirk faded slightly before he shrugged again. “I have no idea what your salamandyr is doing, but it’s irritating my flit, if that helps any. But it’s entirely poss--” Blue dragon. Bronze salamandyr chasing. Was that - what was her name? He couldn’t recall the blue rider’s identity, but he knew a blue dragon sauntering up nearby was not a good thing. Not a good thing at all. Glancing at Lennae, R’wign casually started scooting across the grass until he was most effectively hiding behind the green rider, and then looked up at Checkoth. “Sit on her if she comes near me, I’m not being molested by some random blue rider under the influence of salamandyr lust. I already had one rub up against me and that was enough for one lifetime.” The brown snorted, but did spread one wing (comically, also around Lennae). R’wign scrunched up his nose, and then turned to the green rider again. “If she comes over here, I’m pushing you onto her, just so you know. I’m injured.” Never mind that so was Lennae, no - he was not about to be jumped… again… by someone with a blue attached to their mind. No sir, thank you and come again later.

Hero pumped his wings harder to quicken his pace as Ellie quickened hers. The sun was so fast, so lovely. Then suddenly his sun veered upside down. Chirping in slight confusion Hero flared his wings wide to backstroke and did a neat little flip so he could change direction. He was nowhere near as graceful as a brown might have been, but he was strong, and the maneuver proved that at least. Gliding after the now confused sun he warbled to her.
His bright Elegance did not need to concern herself with the false sun. The false sun was a blasphemous little frill wing. The false sun could not even compare to the blinding light of the real one. The other chasers where still ignored. They didn’t matter. Only Ellie mattered. Hero flew diligently after her and twirled as she twirled putting a bit more rotation into his own aerial stunt.
As Ellie chirped and fluted Hero took a glance back. The only glance he had spared the other competitors the entire flight. The brown? She was encouraging the brown? He was the one who had given her a gift. Perhaps the sun liked such offerings. She must and why not? She deserved them.
As Ellie broke into the sunshine Hero banked to snatch a small purple flower off a vine he passed. Griping it tightly in his fore claws, the bronze followed the sound of her bugle. His wings working in overtime to catch up. He was no longer the forerunner in the flight, but surely she would forgive his lapse in place? After all he had brought her a gift. The sun may not be able to eat it but it was very pretty. Though nowhere near as pretty as her blinding hide.
Catching the glint of his sun out over the river Hero caught up as quickly as he was able, powering his wings in a final sprint of speed. The burning in his wings had started in earnest but it was pushed from his mind. The sun was tiring as well, it was evident from the slowing of her pace. As Ellie flew over the edge of the crashing water Hero followed, giving one final twirl in excitement as the open air greeted them. Finally she was up high. High in the sky as the sun ought to be! The mist from the waterfall glinting off her hide made her blindingly bright. A true sun.
---
Onyx continued his tree scampering, catching a glint of gold here and there. Once he thought in despair that he lost her, but no. The clever beauty had merely doubled back to look at the confused brown who was trying to twine with a bronze flier. Ugly. Stupid. The mandyr hissed before gliding to the edge of the tree line.
There he saw Ellie out over the water and he sprinted down the tree to follow her glowing form from the safety of the bank. Ugly. Flier. NOOOO PRETTY GOLDYMINE! He shrieked as the gold flit went past the waterfall and into open air. Pacing back and forth he gave a hiss. Backing up the brown wiggled his rump and sprinted for the edge of the waterfall.... Only to come skidding to a stop…decidedly ticked off.
UGLY FALSE GOLDY! Onyx shrieked at Ellie. She was abandoning her true chasers for the ugly fliers? Ugly! Dunghead! Stupid! Bad! Faranth! Shards! Shells! Egg! He screamed after Ellie flaring his frill to his fullest capabilities. His eyes changed from purple to intense crimson. With a final poisonous hiss he retreated back to the jungle. Plotting his revenge. After all flitter eggs tasted soooooo good.

Imp darted among the foliage, bursting out occasionally to glide after his queen and attempt some more tame aerial tricks, which were centred for the most part around the air currents he could ride. However he abandoned his tricks after he was only just able to make a collision into a branch look like he’d meant to land there and run along it.
Out of the corner of his eye he noticed something that made him stare for a moment. That noisy little flit riding brown was trying to twine with one of the bronze flitters. What an insult to his queen! She was the one they were supposed to capture, not some bronze rival! Silly silly. Only prettylove. He muttered veering sharply to avoid coming a cropper due to his own inattention. Love prettylove, adore pretty song, beauty prettylove He called out to his glorious gold as if to prove his devotion with a silver tongue, or mind.
Oh horror, his queen shot upwards, heading for light among the branches, not to be outdone Imp skittered up a tree trunk as fast as his legs could climb. Running along the highest branch that would hold him he flung his lithe body into the open air, wings and frill extended proudly. See? he didn’t need to cheat and chase others during her Flight. He flapped his wings in a totally ungainly manner, drifting down even as he attempted forward motion after his gold.
Imp ended up in the river with an undignified splash but he wasn’t beaten, oh no not him! Seemingly boundless in energy he began to swim, moving in the water as he would in the air for the very best currents. The bronze rocketed along for a moment, aided by the river itself but there was a greater trial to come. He needed to get out and up after his love, she was flying, not swimming! His claws scrabbled for purcase on a rock and the bronze emerged. He was out! A dead tree a short way off provided a way out of the river, at the cost of yet more time, and Imp was off again, running as fast as he could, right for the falls.
He bolted past the brown who’d stopped at the edge and once again hurled his small body into the unforgiving sky. His wings flapped, his frill flared, his body writhed in the air, and then, wonder of wonders, the salamandyr rose. I come prettylove! Imp crowed, spinning slightly on his updraft. Shame there was airstream to take him right to his golden love.
Darya’s body swayed in time to her bronze pet’s movements while her eyes flicked from Leanne to R’wign, two queens? That wasn’t right, how was she supposed to know which one to catch? ‘Love prettylove, adore pretty song, beauty prettylove’ she repeated Imp’s compliments at a low mutter, taking a step toward the other riders.
Azrath merely watched, bewildered. She could catch someone now. Why didn’t she? Silly rider of his.

Baby’s chest was heaving as his small blue head finally punched through the canopy. His violet eyes were dimmed with exhaustion as he sent them skimming across the jungle canopy. Where was his sun? Had she gone? Had she left him?!
A brokenhearted keen swelled in the back of his throat, but it was cut short as he suddenly spotted Ellie's gleaming form jump from the branches a dragonslength in front of him. Before he could think of a verse to describe how beautiful she looked, the queen was off and sailing through the air like ribbon of gold and sunlight. He watched for a brief moment, adoration bringing the colour back to his eyes, then upon realizing that she was rapidly widening the distance between them he threw himself from the branches of his tree and spread his wings wide. The breath of wind that capture Imp swelled under his own wings, and over the cliff he went, shrieking his breathless victory.
Unfortunately for the blue salamandyr, he was true to his species in his lack of aerial prowess. A half-hearted attempt to flap his wings lost him several inches of altitude, and the wind was only strong enough to keep him airborne in the loosest sense of the term. Moving as swiftly as midwinter ambersap, he watched woefully as his glittering sun moved farther and farther away from him. Please! Please no leave Baby! He called after her, flaring his dark frill in a desperate attempt to recapture her attention.
A poor show of judgment to be sure.
The wind chose that exact moment to pick up, and it caught the blue's parasol-like frill instantly. He squawked as he was twisted into a lopsided and vaguely bipedal position that forced him to snap his wings shut or risk spinning down into the river. He looked for all the world like a dark blue maple seed sailing across the canyon.
~We aaaaaaall daaaa same~ He crooned after his golden beauty, desperate to stay as charming as possible even as he drifted slowly along in the most humiliating position possible. ~An looooove iiiiis bind! Da suuuuuuun is gone befoooooore sheeeee shines~ Squawking as the wind began to die, he sang louder to compensate for his reduced speed. ~A-AN IF DA ANSWER IS NO CANNAI CHANGE YOUUUUUUR MIND~?

Zeek encountered an unexpected problem with his acrobatics. It was tiring! He was forced to start taking the straightest paths just to shore up the remainder of his flagging endurance. He was trying his best, but he was losing speed, and he fought to keep up without the much appreciated help that the open sky would provide. There wasn’t a single updraft or refreshing breath of wind under the thick cover of trees, and it was as taxing to fly regularly as it was to fly while doing the tricks he’d tried to show off with. He wanted to last till the end, but his young muscles were starting to burn in earnest. He crooned encouragement to his bright sun though, he’d keep going for her, yes, he would. She angled downwards and he followed, gliding when he could and pumping when she took a turn he needed to follow. He chirruped happily at her own agility when she turned to glide upside down. What a wonderful flier she was!
When the bright shiny sun headed upwards for a bright patch of light piercing the canopy, he followed diligently, trilling happily when she spoke to him, Him! He whistled and warbled back to her, answering her encouragement with his promise to keep up and a renewed sense of energy. He gave her one more fluttering loop, probably the last trick he had in him, before he burst out of the trees after her, crowing in delight when she crossed the river and swept downstream. He was getting so good at focusing solely on her, that now, the antics of every other chaser went mostly ignored. Hispet would be so proud!
The spray coming up gave him a much needed boost, and he rode the current at a quick glide, saving his wings as much as he could as the water and trees rushed by in a blur. The canyon opened up before them, and he trilled in delight when she zoomed over the edge, heading for the open sky in such a tantalizing show of glitter and beauty. He rode the vapor trails upwards just a bit, delightfully refreshed with the spray and how it cooled his heated body. Zeek’s trill was full of light happiness at the simple act of rising out over the expanse of falling water. He focused in on that brilliant point of gold light just slightly further down than him, and angled downwards, letting gravity give him speed and help close the distance where his nearly spent endurance could not.

Voyager was now in the game fully and completely, still with a good bit of his youthful energy, powering forward with every ounce of speed he could squeeze from his wings. He was free of the brown menace, he was gaining on all the others!! And then they were out, over the waterfall and beyond. Now was his time! In the clear, no branches to endanger his life, he started throwing himself through every trick he could think of, having seen the other males' tricks earlier on. Now! He was the one with the energy, the one with the oomph to spare, and with no burden on his back! In the clear, he didn't have to worry about smacking into a tree. Crooning as loud as he could manage, he sang for his Golden Sun, twisting wing over wing in first one direction and then the other. Once he made a fair amount of distance, he pulled off a barrel roll as well before hurrying back into the race. Twisting back and forth randomly, he tried to be just as show-off as he could manage. He wanted his Golden Sun! He would carry her high!
Far behind the youthful upstart, Storm was a determined streamlined flitter, pouring every ounce of energy into making up all that distance that Aslan had cost him. Pathetic twerp of a mandyr didn't even know what a Gold was! Like a steam engine not to be stopped, Storm wasted nothing. Nothing flowery, all power. He was going to catch up, and he was going to win! All his motions were efficient, calculated, and all corners cut to make up every inch he could. There was no way he was going to finish last!!
Even farther back, Aslan was scurrying along, as fast as he could manage. He needed a new mount, yes he did. Sooner or later, that golden sun was going to go places he couldn't go, and he needed a way to get there. Not to mention to save all the energy he could in catching up! Scampering along with his frill closed tight, in dead silence, the golden crowned color blind brown was thinking fit to blow smoke out his ears. Bounding up a fallen long, he flung himself out into mid air, frill and wings spreading to give himself as much lift as possible ... to catch hold of some unlucky flitter's tail. Jaws snapping shut on said appendage, Aslan started hurrying to scramble up the flitter's back. And he rode there on his shoulders for a moment, until he drew close enough to another flitter who was faring better ... and jump! Aslan hopped from one tired mount to one slightly fresher. And so he progressed, from flitter to flitter until he landed on Zeek, just as they crested the fall. Oh! That was a long ways down!! Aslan just hung on for a moment, distracted by looking down the fall. And then he remembered why he was there ... his golden sun! He bounced a few times, and then launched off with the biggest jump he could pull off, aiming to land on Hero next. That young Bronze could surely carry him to victory.
Pretty love! Aslan come! Aslan not quit! Comiiiiiiiiiiiiinnggggg!!! He called, feeling the exorable pull of gravity all too soon.
Uh oh...

Dipping one of his wings so that he could twist into a dive, Azaran dropped toward the ground as he followed his shinning Queen. Now it truly reminded him of another maiden flight he had taken part of, but the memories needed to be suppressed, his attention needed to be wholly on following Elegance. It was getting increasingly hard to do that though, the Blue annoyance was getting even worse it seemed as time went on, and it was starting to get on his very last nerve. The Bronze was sure that if they had set that Blue on the humans that had come and hurt their home, they would have left with ears bleeding.
Trilling in response to Elegance's call, Azaran huffed as she disappeared through the tree line, although she was benevolent enough to alert them to where she was. Bursting through the leaves, tossing loose ones up in the process, the Bronze dipped down with another twirl and leveled out above the river. Was she finally growing tired of her flight? Or maybe she was growing tired of the incessant chatter of the running annoyances... or maybe both! Tossing his only real competition an unhappy glance, Azaran was genuinely surprised at the course Ellie took. Instead of down, she continued on. Oh, how clever and smart she was! Chirping happily at her, the older male rolled, joyful that none of the non-flyers would be able to last as long in the air as he and the rest of the Flitters could.
Even the other annoyance that was also gold wouldn't be able to follow them. Pumping his wings now that the space around him wasn't filled with branches, Azaran began using the air currents to push him faster. He was starting to get tired, and his wings were starting to feel achy.

That showed her, that other gold that was screaming obscenities at her. Ellie beat her wings, propelling herself forward in another quick barrel roll. She wasn’t about to be outdone by one of the little wingless menaces. If the other gold wanted to follow her over the waterfall, so be it. She could try to fly, but everyone with eyes would see who was the more beautiful in the air. After all, Ellie’s wings were far more efficient for flight. Bigger, longer, better. That false-gold didn’t deserve any of her pretties. Not a single one.
The freedom of the open air was exhilarating and Ellie spun gracefully forward, twirling every few seconds to show off what little aerial prowess she possessed. She was midtwirl when another string of obscenities burst through her mind -- but these were not that false-gold’s, they belonged to one of the others. One of the other non-flyers. Her eyes whirled only slightly apologetically, but she didn’t look back and she certainly wasn’t one to be bullied by insults. If he thought such comments would sway her, he was completely wrong. She did feel somewhat bad - but that guilt was pushed away by irritation. She was the sun, and the sun would not be swayed by venomous remarks. She would burn away all the poison in their words with her perfect glow.
Amidst one of her quick turns she noticed -- something very bizarre behind her indeed. One of the little non-flyers had tried to follow her? A hint of worry surged through her gaze; if his wings didn’t hold up, he’d go crashing into the water! It was tempting to fly back and pluck Imp out of the sky, drop him on a rock and keep going, but only natural instinct kept her aloft. She couldn’t favor any of her Chasers above the rest or the others might take offense, and he’d known the risks when he flew after her. He could have stopped, like the evil Non-Flyer calling insults after her. He probably should have. She was very, very flattered, though, that he hadn’t. He was still after her, even if he was much slower than her beauties that were hot on her tail.
He wasn’t the only one, though. Ellie gave a startled shriek at Baby and instinctively turned downward, her eyes whirling rapid shades of panic. What was he - what a pretty frill but - why - he was going to die! Alarmed and clearly on the verge of panic, the gold fire lizard dropped into a rapid dive toward the water - because she’d have to be there when his frill gave out, so that he didn’t drown. Her silly, silly small winged-ones! Didn’t they know the risks they were taking, coming after her? Were she able, she might have cried in distress. She didn’t want her beauties harmed!
It was beginning to hurt, flying downward so quickly. Her wings snapped against her body to make the descent sharper, faster. Her weight propelled her like a torpedo straight toward the river and she spun, a glowing form of rapid descent. Halfway down, she flared her wings and leveled out, the movement straining her in the process; any brave enough to follow would run the risk of plunging straight into the water, so close to the river had she stopped. She flew at level, above the water enough to avoid touching it lest she be carried off on an errant wave. Her gaze fell back on her chasers and -- and -- That mandyr had Caught her beautiful brownling, too! Her pretty, pretty brown! Twittering in distress, Ellie rapidly spun and ascended back toward the air, back upwards…
Her pretty, pretty brown. He’d given her a gift. She liked him. But liking or not, she -- she couldn’t pick him. Not with that mandyr. They’d fight… she didn’t want to cause a fight. She fluted an apology back to Zeek and turned around - around to see her other males. Her pretty, pretty boys… All bronzes, all pretty… but only two of them did she know. And one of those two had a flower. A pretty for her…? He’d learned from her lovely brown! Encouraged, Ellie turned around, her wings burning. She was tired, and it was time to choose. With a quick dart behind her, she latched onto Hero and grabbed him with her claws, chattering encouragingly to him; he mustn’t let her fall, her lovely Hero -- please, please don’t let her fall into the river!
Uh. Uuuh.
R’wign blinked, twice, as Darya spoke. Then he turned to look at Lennae skeptically. “She’s attached to that bronze mandyr, isn’t she?” he asked, not waiting for a response. Immediately pushing himself upward (using Checkoth’s flank as a brace), R’wign stood, backed up, and grinned weakly. He didn’t know who the bluerider was speaking to, but he’d heard enough complaints from Ka’rys to know that being around someone ridden by salamandyr-lust was not a good decision. He did the only sensible thing that someone could do in such a situation: he panicked. Quiet, resolute panic, but panic nonetheless; the idea of being jumped by someone wasn’t appealing in the least. He turned back to Lennae, gestured toward Darya in explanation, and then said quite clearly, “You’re so on your own.”
And then R’wign turned and actually bolted, heading toward the Weyr itself… and Checkoth rumbled his amusement. Evidently, his rider’s predicament was quite funny to him.

Brat continued chasing after Ellie, her insults flowing continuously. She ignored the chasers, solely focused on the golden firelizard who was stealing her food and her males. That simply wouldn’t do. Not at all. Someone needed to put her in her place and clearly the only one with enough sense to do so was her. Everyone else was too intent on lusting after her, which was absolutely ridiculous. She was a miniflyerugly, and the ugliest one she’d ever seen by far. Stupid ugly.
So intent on taking down Ellie was she that she nearly missed the cliff. Skidding to a stop, she quickly clambered on to the largest rock she could find, flaring her frill and bouncing up and down as she hissed her insults. Never come back! Go ‘way! Stay ‘way! Ugly butt dwarf! Ugly ugly ugly notrealqueen! Falsequeen! FAKE! Hah! She’d shown her, yes she had. Content that she’d chased off Ellie for good, Brat finally left her post, ready to find Hers and bother her about some food. All of that running had made her quite hungry!
----
Lennae raised an eyebrow at R’wign’s explanation for why Brat was behaving as she was and shook her head, not bothering to deign his comment with a response. Honestly, she doubted that she was witty enough to match R’wign in a bout of smarts at any rate, which would be no good. She’d rather not make a fool out of herself, thank you very much. Besides, it was far more amusing to watch the brownweyrling make fun of other people. Speaking of other people, it looked as though someone, probably someone bonded to one of the ‘mandyrs chasing, had spotted R’wign and was coming towards them.
“Wha – you’re injured?! And I suppose that I'm the epitome of good health then.” She felt irritation flare. Did he honestly think that she would simply sit around and let her get used as a shield? No sir, she didn’t find that to be a very appealing thought at all. And what if the woman mistook her for R’wign and jumped her by mistake? That was even less appealing. Especially with her broken collarbone. That would probably just lead to more time being injured. Sharding ‘mandyrs.
She nodded in answer to R’wign’s question, but found it quite unnecessary, for he’d already bolted. Shards! She was going to kill R’wign after this. Eyeing Darya warily, she smiled and gave a weak chuckle, rubbing at the back of her hair with her good arm. How did one handle someone in ‘mandyr-lust. Running was always an option, but if she tripped, or if the woman ran after her, it would only lead to pain.
Slowly, she edged toward Checkoth, fully intending to use the brown as a shield if it came down to it. “So, uh…lovely day for a run, eh?”
