It was one of the things he liked most about her...though at one time it had been somewhat disconcerting. It may not really be much of a feat to read M'ta's moods, especially in the company of family and friends, considering the brownrider was quite expressive in tone and facial expressions when he wasn't actively masking them with a feigned neutrality. But Ruliana somehow seemed to be able to share it with him with just a small touch. She didn't voice it, forcing them into that awkwardness, but still showed that she understood and that was something he greatly appreciated. It made everything easier and encouraged him to continue with his not entirely direct approach.
M'ta nodded at her statement about Riaren. He'd been proud of the boy for a very long time. Though there were times that he found it a little irksome to be called uncle by the child (mostly because Erilena's twins and Elysia's son also called him that and he didn't care for them nearly as much as he did the son of his deceased weyrmate and the gildrider who had been one of his best friends) Riaren had shown a good deal of strength. He was a good kid, and considering the uncertainty of his early turns and losing both parents, that showed a strength of character that M'ta admired. He even dealt well with the willful Terilyn. He'd make an amazing healer if that was what he chose.
A look of mild dismay touched the brownrider's eyes at mention of his daughter becoming a goldrider, but then he noticed the twinkle inner eye and the kiss all but made him forget that concern. Her statement did the rest. It was a rare, delighted smile that she was given, and another kiss that almost crossed into the realm of hungry, before he pulled back and took her other hand. "It's your decision but...I'd like that very much." No doubt as to his sincerity. He could likely adopt another orphan if she didn't want a child of her own (and probably would eventually so long as she was okay with it, knowing him) but he wanted one with Ruli. He just...didn't feel he had a right to push it, almost no right to even ask for it. It wasn't his body or his risk to take, and he wouldn't have to take leave from work to do it. She'd left Nerat Hold for a reason, too, and he hadn't been sure she even wanted to have a baby ever.
Taking her hand, M'ta led her out of the garden, the man's contented happiness no doubt readily apparent to someone who knew him as intimately as Ruliana did. "An odd conversation considering I planned today so we could have some time to ourselves," he commented wryly, amused at himself. "Did you have anything you wanted to do other than make snowmen and start snowball fights?" A teasing glance was shot her way. "And for all our sakes I hope she doesn't Impress a gold. It'll be a nightmare." He was only half-joking, too. She probably would make a decent - even a good - goldrider. Yet he had trouble seeing her liking that domestic role very much, especially with so many senior goldriders above her. Knowing the willful girl, she was like to drive everyone else crazy in her discontent.
