A croon that was undeniably grateful was offered to Azrath. Oquith liked making friends very much, but she was always slightly anxious about how she’d be received and misinterpreting something so very badly was very embarrassing, even if Azrath didn’t seem to mind it. The small green might have answered him had Darya not completely derailed her blushing. Faint it might have been, but the green certainly still saw it; Oquith stilled. She didn’t tense, nor go limp – she just ceased to move, head tilted curiously in Darya’s direction as her eyes whirled rapidly; she hadn’t offended the bluerider, had she? The tone in which Darya spoke made a slight uncertain hint touch her gaze before Oquith glanced over at Azrath and commented, I’m afraid I won’t ever understand Yours quite well. Why did she turn pink…? TreHers turned pink quite frequently (today being a particularly excessive day, apparently) but not without reason and her saying that she loved him didn’t make him turn pink. Neither did he go pink when Qualuth told him or Wymeth (though she’d guess that if Vashti told him so, he would turn red).
But that was because he ‘had a crush’ on her (as he’d put it, though Oquith didn’t quite understand the terminology) and Oquith was sure that DaryaAzrath’s didn’t have a crush on her. People and dragons didn’t love each other that way, TreHers had told her; apparently there were different kinds of love. Who knew?
She was effectively distracted, though, by the permission to do whatever she wanted with the stone. Whatever. She. Wanted. Those words were like magic; the green’s eyes whirled so rapidly, and such bright shades of blue, that it was probably surprising she didn’t actively start to loop-the-loop in pure joy. Oquith crooned instead to display her delight, her tail flicking underwater; she had the sense not to flap her wings, since doing so would undoubtedly douse both herself and Darya. Even though the bluerider was already wet, Oquith doubted she’d appreciate such an action and she did like the bluerider. Didn’t want to upset her; that would be bad~ Another low croon as the bluerider started towards Hers, and Oquith took the moment to turn swiftly to dive back into the water, sending a playful stream of bubbles at Azrath before she raked her right claws down the length of the sand, sending swirling dust and sands upwards around her stomach as she lowered her nose to poke around.
Have you seen it? DaryaAzrath’s is very good at this, is she not? the green inquired happily of Tr’esn, still completely submerged. Do you think if I made it into a necklace she’d wear it? Or, even if she didn’t wear it, do you think she’d like it? The hopeful note in Oquith’s voice was undeniable.
Tr’esn nodded slightly, unable to tell his green otherwise – when asked with that delight, so naïve – so sweet. I’m sure she’ll love it. He was less than positive of how truthful that response was, but it was what Oquith was looking for – and who was he to deny her that? The bluerider’s words drew a nod from him as the shiny rock landed at the bottom of the stone and the greenrider uncurled from his perch to lean down to look at it, scooting forward in preparation to wriggle off the rock and pick it up; his other hand scooped beneath the one that Oquith had already brought to him. He was careful not to look at Darya even as she’d come over and tossed him the shiny; he would have turned red again if he had – he knew he would, and likely as not the bluerider would catch it and tease him more and he was not up for that.
Dolphin dove first, though, snatching up the stone with both foreclaws and then twisting in the air to come back up to land in Tr’esn’s lap again as the greenrider jolted backwards in surprise; the whersport trilled quietly as she brought the shiny to her face, inspecting it carefully. Yes, Dolphin had a soft spot for shinies – it had effectively distracted her from snapping at Avia, who curled onto Tr’esn’s shoulder complacently; she’d won that argument, see see? Riiight.

Azrath looked at Darya properly and was slightly amused to see that his rider really was blushing, albeit faintly. The blue dragon’s neck stretched out towards his rider as if to get a better look, he couldn’t quite believe that. Oh don’t worry about understanding her. The blue replied generously. I’ve been bonded to Darya a very long time and I don’t always understand her. She doesn’t expect people to like her. Azrath’s tone was slightly amused. Tolerate her, yes, but not like her. It catches her off balance when people do like her. She’ll probably have to go out of her way to prove she’s not all that likable now. She is rather strange I suppose. The blue’s explanation trailed off rather lamely into that comment, he was well aware that his rider wasn’t like other people (it was what made her his mindmate after all) but when it came to explaining the things he knew, they seemed very strange indeed.
As he observed Oquith’s reaction to the negligent comment that she could do whatever she wanted with the shinyrock Azrath began to doubt he’d ever fully understand her either. She seemed to absolutely delighted with the pronouncement, but how many things could one do with a rock? A sudden devious thought took hold of Azrath, Oquith liked shiny things a great deal, so he should probably get his head down and look for something really, really good to give her. He knew what he wanted, it was just a case of finding one. The thing was that he normally only passed that sort of thing by and didn’t remember where they came from. Maybe if he just acted as he normally did one would appear?
Darya’s mouth quirked into a crooked smile as Tr’esn looked at anything but her, it was actually getting a little tiresome now. Could anyone actually be that easily embarrassed? It wasn’t like she was coming on to him or anything. Darya tipped her head to one side, about to say something else when something wrapped around her ankle and yanked her foot out from under her, prompting an inarticulate squawk as she toppled backwards into the water.
Azrath rumbled cheerfully, he did so like the strange sounds his rider made when she was dunked, that was one of the reasons he pulled her foot out from under her, the other was that he usually did that sort of thing, so it might help him in his quest for the perfect shiny thing. Perhaps not the most logical reasoning ever but it work ed for him.
‘AZRATH!’ Darya finally managed to get herself organised enough to shout and tug her foot free of her dragon’s tail. ‘Twice in one day. You are a…a… words fail me!’ Darya made an expansive gesture with one hand that sent water flying everywhere since she hadn’t bothered to get up yet and gave her dragon a glare that could have burned a hole in solid rock, totally oblivious to the audience she had.
Azrath stepped back, swept his tail out of the way, and attempted to look contrite, but then his eyes caught a little sparkle in the sand under his feet, and he couldn’t help scuffing his claws through the sand. Ooooh was it the right shiny thing? Was it the perfect one?

Blink. For a moment, Oquith’s head tilted; the green was clearly struggling with the concept. Did that – did that mean Azrath’s liked being…not liked? How strange. How very strange. The green dragon liked being liked – very much. It made her happy, made her nervous and pleased and the idea of not liking that feeling confused her even more. But she didn’t ask, since Azrath had tried to explain and she’d hate to press too far. Instead, she gave a slight bounce through the water before she answered. I see…or at least, and the wry honest note in her voice was unmistakable, At least I /think/ I do. Her wings flared in the cool water; the green was very much happiest when looking for shinies, when she had company, and when Hers was nearby; the dragon was a decidedly social creature. As Oquith lingered near the top of the water, a blur of green left Tr’esn to land daintily onto Oquith, Avia fussing with her wings a moment before the barrage of questions returned.
What was she doing? Could Avia help? Please, please? Just maybe? Looking for shinies? Why? Could they make something for Re –
There was no doubting that all four of the mindmates jumped visibly at Darya’s squawk. Oquith’s tail flicked through the water and the green spun her head around to croon anxiously before she relaxed, catching sight of Azrath’s tail; her eyes returned to the pleasant shades of green and blue before she crooned at Darya again, reassuring, amused despite herself. She wasn’t accustomed to the bluepair’s ways, but Oquith was certainly willing to try and understand (though the concept of startling TreHers so badly was a foreign one, definitely). Avia, meanwhile, gave a huge start, almost slipped off of Oquith’s back, and clung tightly before she emitted a sound somewhere between a squawk and a squeal that sounded suspiciously similar to Darya’s previous squawk; the green ruffled both of her wings smugly before she cooed, the sound almost condescending, before the questions resumed. Now, what had she been saying? Ah, of course – something for Resin plea – why wasn’t the green paying attention?!
Oquith wasn’t paying attention to Avia because she was paying attention to Tr’esn, who had flinched at the bluerider’s squawk. He had, however, surpassing anything he’d done previously, actually stared at Darya, mouth slightly open in his surprise. The greenrider hadn’t seen Azrath’s stunt, and could only use what imagination supplied him to guess what had happened. Dolphin, meanwhile, gave a low chrrrrrt that was blatantly one of amusement; served the bluething’s right. How funny. Tr’esn froze, head tilting, before he scooted forward awkwardly on the rock, both hands winding beneath Dolphin’s stomach for both comfort and so the whersport would be scraped on the rock as he shifted, before he cleared his throat nervously. Instinct said to speak quietly, very softly, but chances were if he did that, Darya couldn’t hear him over her lecturing of the blue. Still, his breath caught in his throat until she’d finished.
“Are you – um, are you okay, what happened…?” His cheeks were still tinged pink, but Tr’esn had been at least distracted enough not to be focusing on Darya’s clothing (or more specifically, lack thereof). “What’d Azrath do…?” His nose crinkled in slight confusion before he looked from Azrath to Oquith questioningly, earning only a low croon from the green; her mind brushed against his, encouraging – he’d been doing so well! Even with the bluerider still lacking in the fake hide bits. The reminder made Tr’esn look back down at Dolphin again before he glanced up, more slowly, anxious. Because people did not just decide to squawk for no reason.
If you were looking for an insult, you could ask a Salamandyr, Oquith commented helpfully to Darya, drifting out a little more so they were out of any immediate shade from trees, cliffs, or Azrath’s. Avia flipped both wings open immediately to preen, earning a disparaging ‘comment’ from Dolphin, who stretched disdainfully in Tr’esn’s lap. They seem to be very good at insults. At least, the ones she’d known seemed to have a penchant for them (though the one she knew best, Mushu, just seemed to like the word ‘up’). TreMine, she added privately, Could you start making the shinies better please? A necklace?
Once we get back, okay? I don’t think Darya will appreciate a vine being used for a necklace chain; only dragons can wear those…

Azrath crooned encouragingly to Oquith, as long as she thought she understood that was alright. As I said, she is rather strange, just ignore the strangeness as much as you can. Azrath commented, not very comfortingly. I think she likes you. Azrath added, without sounding too uncertain, Darya hadn’t been hideously sarcastic to Oquith anyway, that normally meant she liked people, or that she couldn’t think of anything.
The sounds around her brought Darya up short in her reading the riot act to Azrath, she’d forgotten she was providing entertainment to the masses with that, although she could only assume the whersport’s reaction was to her actual ungraceful falling, as was Avia’s. Darya could only guess what Oquith was crooning about, and Tr’esn, well that was a surprising reaction, he was actually looking at her. Her first response was naturally to pull a face at everyone.
‘I’m fine, I wasn’t expecting to be dunked again.’ Darya paused to glare at Azrath again, not that the blue was paying any attention whatsoever. ‘I just had one of my feet pulled out from under me, I should have been expecting it really but I thought maybe Azrath would be distracted by the search for shinies.’ A rueful smile flitted across Darya’s face as she organised herself into a sitting position in the water, on the basis that it was hard to knock over someone who was already sat down.
Azrath carefully cleared the sand away from the shiny thing, and was highly disappointed, it was the wrong sort of shiny, not what he was looking for at all. He grabbed at it with on set claws anyway, because it was still a shiny, it just wasn’t the right shiny. Oh that was to help me find shinies Darya. I thought it would work because I normally see them, but today I couldn’t find any, so I decided to act normally and I found this. But it’s not what I wanted. Azrath paid attention and tried to explain himself when Darya mentioned shinies, and he realised he was being glared at.
Darya thought about Azrath’s explanation for several long moments and then sighed. ‘and what led you to believe the dumping me on my ass was a good way to find whatever shiny you wanted that wasn’t that one?’ She demanded in exasperation.
I thought it would work. Azrath replied, unable to see how it didn’t make sense. It hadn’t worked but it made perfect sense. I wanted one of these. he added, sending an image of what he wanted.
‘Well you don’t find that kind of thing around here. There’s not enough iron.’ Darya responded to the image in a tone that suggested that was obvious. ‘Oquith’s right I need to consult some salamandyrs so I can insult you. I’ll ask Showoff, he’s very insulting.’ Darya made no move to, well, move despite apparently having said all she was going to. Azrath sighed heavily, as was his habit when Darya was being exasperating, and moved towards Oquith. Maybe she’d like the shiny anyway, Azrath looked at the sea smoothed bit of brown glass doubtfully. Well the sea could always take it again…
