Ferneth nodded in agreement to her words. Candidates were the least informed people in the weyr for sure. They were also easily ordered around. At least back home he was one of the few people who could give orders. He had to admit that those orders were generally transmitted through him from his father though. Everywhere there were people who gave orders and people who followed them. Neither job ever seemed easy either.
When the topic swung round to the headwoman again he grinned. "Yeah, luckily she has yet to memorize me. I can just imagine what'll happen when she does," Ferneth said with no small amount of amusement. I'd never hear the end of it from her... He just hoped he made it through all the lessons and Impressed sooner rather than later because Ferneth didn't want to end up as the Headwoman's errand boy for too long.
Ferneth grew even more curious about why Meira knew so much about the North. If weyrs kept a lot of secrets why did she know such detailed things? He gave her a searching look but he wasn't one to pry into people's business so he left it be. It was also disrespectful to ask about it if she didn't want to tell. Who knows? Maybe sometime in the future she would tell him.
Meira's sudden outburst made Ferneth jump slightly. He hadn't been expecting a reaction like that. He frowned slightly as he spoke. She's afraid and yet still wants to Bond....I guess it's kind of admirable, Ferneth thought. He didn't have time to say anything about it before she rushed into another topic. He was more than welcome to have a different subject. The other one was...quite awkward.
Ferneth considered Meira's query before shrugging and answering. "Sure I do. There are dangers everywhere. In the crafts, in the holds...Thread doesn't scare me and if I can help defend my home in the South I will." Father may not like me anymore but at least I can still protect my mother and my siblings.

So Ferneth did know, and was accepting of, the Candidates’ low ranks? At Healer Crafthall (and Meira mentally steeled herself against reacting to the name and was pleased at her success), she had had a few Drudges to carry out her orders, namely to fetch this and that in order for a patient’s healing to progress more quickly, but that only when she had learned enough. And being far from leader-like, the “orders” had been more like queries anyway. She was much more satisfied following out orders.
She rolled her eyes, relaxing more, at Ferneth’s grin. “You’re lucky,” she said darkly. (Surely if he’d meant badly, he would’ve done something by now?) “I’m sure she’s started writing down a list of what chores she has yet to send me on—I’ve never heard such a long list, and I’ve never been on two of the same.” At least if she’d had two of the same Chores, she’d know where to go. But no.
The silence after her remark about the North pressed uncomfortably on Meira’s ears, and she shifted, wondering if she’d said too much or something. She could probably come up with a viable excuse for her knowledge, but she didn’t want to have to lie and then carry on with it. “Have you ever been up North?” she asked uncertainly, shifting on her rock and tucking her legs against her chest, as if they could offer some sort of protection from the memories.
Thank Faranth he didn’t press the topic of Bonding and Flights. Perhaps he wasn’t so bad of company. Meira exhaled lightly and then shifted comfortably into the next topic. “In Selenitas, you’ll probably be in the center of war, though,” she pointed out. “What with this being the only Weyr that hasn’t, strictly speaking, suffered as heavily as the other Weyrs.” They want the strength, she thought, but didn’t say. A record she’d once copied came back to her suddenly, as clearly as if she had seen it a minute previously. “And the Weyrling Massacre a few Turns back…” she added in a low whisper. It was a sacred topic, to speak of so many dragon deaths, inflicted by a ruthless Northern man.

While Meira preferred to follow orders Ferneth would much rather give them. He had no problem telling people what to do, so long as he knew that he could do what he was asking of them. Being a candidate certainly brought him down a peg or two. Not that he minded over much. Everyone ought to have some humility.
Ferneth was amused at her tone. "There seems to be no end of degrading, annoying, or just plain boring chores for her to give us. I haven't been here long but I haven't gotten the same chores twice either. Sometimes I'm glad I haven't had one twice." Like cleaning out some of the...dirtier areas of the weyr. The memory made him shudder a little. He devoutly hoped he was never given that one again.
Ferneth raised a single brunette brow. Go to the North? He didn't see why he'd go to such a place. He didn't consider himself crazy. He shook his head in the negative. "I've never been and I don't intend to." Ferneth knew he should count himself lucky that he hadn't been born there. Sometimes he was a bit curious about all the rumours but not enough to actually visit the North.
Ferneth wouldn't be shaken from his choice by the war. When he was younger he had been intent on becoming a dragonrider so that he could make a difference. The mention of the Weyrling Massacre did make him pause before replying. Ferneth remembered hearing about the incident and it made him rather angry at the Northern dragonriders for doing such a cruel, horrible thing. "Even so, I will stand for dragon Hatchings."

Meira raised her eyebrows, surprised. "Glad you haven't been on two of the same? But..." She hesitated. "Well, I mean, it'd be easier if you'd already done a chore, to know where and who to go to..." She hesitated, considering. "Although some chores I'd rather not have done at all." Kitchen duties, for one. Being elbowed, kicked, tripped, and all the while drowning in steam - no, that was definitely not very fun, and something she could pass up on. In fact, there were lots of other chores she could sweetly hand off to the next person, too, but not for lack of respect for orders, just for her own sake.
She knew she sighed in relief at his words, and then instantly, embarrassed, she glanced away. "Well, don't go if you want to stay the way you are," she said bluntly, and then glanced back, her eyes slightly softer. Sadder, too. "Too many people have been killed up there. Too many dragons, too." Meira shook away the thoughts and a grim smile twitched at her mouth. "Although I fancy lots of people saw themselves as the Savior of the North, or something, which is probably why they went." Stupid people, she berated them in her mind. Meira half-wondered if she'd put him off Impressing by mentioning the Weyrling Massacre. He either didn't know about it, or didn't want to hear about it. Perhaps...her stomach rolled. Had his siblings been involved? She bit her lip, hoping she hadn't inadvertantly offended him or anything. "I..." She paused as he spoke, sounding firm in his thoughts. "That's pretty brave of you," she admitted. "Well, then, I wish you luck."

Ferneth nodded in understanding. Sure knowing what to do was great but sometimes that just wasn't worth it. "Exactly. Sure it's easier but I'd rather have a more pleasant chore I've never done before than a really bad one over and over again, you know?" To him kitchen chores were one of the more bearable chores. What he hated was general weyr chores. Now those seemed just pointless. Replace the glows and they just dim again anyways. Clean out the chamber pots...and they definitely get dirty again.
Ferneth smiled as Meira glanced away but hid it when she looked back. He considered her words before answering. Certainly coming up with a good answer made sure he didn't end up with his foot in his mouth! "Thanks for the advice," he said quietly. "You're probably right about that. I think the only ones who can save the North now are the dragonriders....But the likelihood of them stopping the war and setting things right anytime soon are pretty slim."
The brunette lad hadn't known any of the weyrlings that were murdered, but the event was still a sad reminder of the state that Pern was in. Ferneth's eyes softened more at her compliment. "Brave or foolish." His words were full of amusement but his next ones weren't. "If I'm to be considered brave than so are you. I wish you luck too." She had just as much courage to stand knowing she still may have to deal with being 'Flown'.

Meira shrugged at the reasoning. Yes, it was better, but the problem was, the Headwoman often mixed bad and good in equal amounts, and put together it was all but unbearable. “I guess, but on the bright side you could have a chore you liked over and over again,” she pointed out indulgently. Someone had to be more optimistic, since this whole conversation was far from it. Weyrlings being massacred, dragon Risings, chores…wasn’t this so uplifting?
His pause before answering gave Meira plenty time to slip into a rather brooding state, wondering if she ought, by birth, to be more loyal to the North than she was…or if…? Ferneth’s quiet words brought her back out of her reverie, and she shrugged, a small cynical smile tugging her lip. “Dragonriders can stop Thread from poisoning our land,” she pointed out. “They could probably stop the war too—but the stakes are too high.” Among said stakes were the lives of dragons—and what with Thread still a high threat, that wasn’t a chance they could take. “But yes. It’ll take a time.”
They were getting back to her again. Meira shrugged, but a slight smile found her lips. “Thanks.” She paused, glancing up at the sky and wondering vaguely how much longer it would be until the Headwoman missed her errand-runner. Well, she hadn’t specifically requested Meira always be at the Weyr. On an impulse, she gestured in the direction away from the Weyr. “Do you want to walk a bit further?” she suggested. “It’s not nearly time for any meal yet and I was planning on going farther anyway.”

Ferneth would very much like to have a chore he liked more than once but at the cot-hold his chores were almost always the same so he didn't mind the variety that the weyr had. "That would be nice," he mused aloud. "We're bound to do at least one of the ones we like over again, right?" He was all for a lighter bit of conversation after all the heavy stuff. They were taking a break right now, so why should they be limited to more serious conversation.
Meira had a point about Thread, but that was The Northern riders' only good point in his mind. He didn't say anything more on the subject but his thoughts kept going. Why can't they just stop and let things go back to normal? Then again, the war has been going on so long that this is the norm now. That's pretty sad in and of itself. I better not mention it to Meira, Ferneth thought sadly.
Meira's smile made the tan young man smile too. Everyone needed to smile once in a while and he was glad Meira was. Ferneth was slightly surprised when she asked if he wanted to walk. So she didn't want to go back to the weyr yet either. "Certainly. I'm thinking that there's just more jungle that way but I was interested in heading that way too." He stood up slowly, brushing the dirt and whatever else was stuck to the back of his pants. "Ready whenever you are," Ferneth added cheerily.

Meira grinned, rolling her eyes expressively, and then remembered she was supposed to be on her guard. It was hard around someone as likeable as Ferneth, though. "From the number of different chores I've already been assigned, I'm starting to doubt it," she commented dryly. And it was true. She felt like she'd cleaned the entire Weyr in her short stay, plus copied the entire archives, carried supplies until her feet had worn a rut in the stonework, and generally been the only Drudge the Weyr had available. From the way the Headwoman carried on about lazy Candidates, however, it was clear she hadn't been the first to feel this way, nor was she likely to be the last.
What a cheery thought.
Meira was half-confused and half-glad when Ferneth didn't pursue the topic of the North and the war. It was hard to talk so calmly about something so terrible that it had changed the way people considered Dragonriders and Weyrs. From places of safety and guidance to hostile places where torture and death left its mark...that was quite a change and hardly a good one.
The wher Candidate pulled herself off of her rock lightly, shifting from one foot to the other as the soft crumbly dirt beneath her gave way slightly; one hand steadied herself on the rock. One of her legs had began to tingle from the way she'd been sitting. After a moment, the feeling returned and she glanced at Ferneth. From what he had said, she realized he'd expected her to lead the way.
Starting off, she moved at a slower pace than she'd originally come along the bank, glancing at Ferneth to make sure he was following. Now, to avoid the far-from-happy subject of the war, the Massacre, and the deformed dragons...Meira couldn't help thinking that it was unfair for the dragonets, to come out without the chance at life most dragonets were given...what to talk about?
She moved in silence for a while, and then, moving into the shade of a low-hanging tree, she commented, "Did you hear about the fire lizard clutch? It was just laid, wasn't it? Are you going to try to Impress?" She herself had decided not to; the wher clutch had been laid very recently too, and it would be too much to have a hungry fire lizard and a hungry wher on her hands.
If, anyway, she Bonded and Impressed.

Ferneth chuckled quietly at Meira. He was starting to appreciate just how many chores Meira must have done to feel like that. "That many huh? Well, the Headwoman will run out eventually and then you'll start doing doubles." Ferneth then remembered that there was a wher clutch. "But who knows...You may end up Bonding with a wher before then," he reminded her. She probably didn't need reminding though. She probably knew more about the clutch than he did but maybe not.
While Ferneth waited for her to get up he looked at the pattern the sun through the leaves made, the green blades barely dancing in the light breeze. His earlier thought of it being a great day was right. A nice chat in a peaceful jungle on a bright sunny day. He stretched his arms up and looked at Meira again. "It's a very nice day today," Ferneth commented simply.
He lagged behind for a moment before catching up and keeping speed beside Meira as they walked. Ferneth was content to walk in silence for the first little bit. Meira started to talk just as he was getting a little uncomfortable. Firelizard clutch...he'd seen the little creatures flying around but hadn't known there was a clutch until now. Did he want one for himself? He supposed he did. They were cute and exactly like mini dragons. They were also pretty useful. Or so he'd heard.
Ferneth replied after giving it a moment's thought. "I suppose I'll try. It couldn't hurt to have one of them. Apparently they can be handy to have around. Are you going to try and Impress one?" he asked Meira.

"No doubt I will," she agreed dryly, sighing at the dismal thought. More cleaning, being elbowed, shoved, and generally treated like she was an invisible dust mop. Gee, wasn't that just the most exciting thought of the Turn. Meira shook off her dismal mood fairly quickly, though. It was too nice a day to stay grumpy for very long, even if the topic of said grumpiness was quite an understandable one.
But she brightened at the thought of Bonding quickly. "It's pretty close to Hatching," she agreed, her face lighting up briefly. Then she shrugged. "But there are only so many eggs, and a lot more worthy Candidates than just me, if I'm even acceptable at all." Meira kicked at a small pebble in her path, watching its progress as it bounced, skidding, across the dirt and fell with a soft plop into the water.
She glanced up at him in time to see his stretch; a crooked smile flickered across her mouth. "A nice day for getting outside," she agreed, "Not a nice day for lessons or chores."
Pausing momentarily as he caught up to her, Meira kept her lazy pace. No need to go faster; she was in no hurry. She listened quietly to Ferneth's words, quite content for time being to just dawdle along the riverbank and talk about nothing in particular. It was much more interesting to go back to the Weyr and get ordered around some more.
"I think the eggs are available for touching," she remarked, and then a small smile of remembrance touched her lips. "The clutchmother, gold Darling, is really sweet...if you're interested, they're probably in C'lryn's and Minoath's weyr." After all, C'lryn was Darling's Impressed. "I'm not going to Impress, myself," she added.
She paused before gathering her thoughts sufficiently to explain. "You see, what with the Wher Hatching so soon, I don't want to Impress a fire lizard and then Bond to a wher, and have two hungry hatchlings..." Meira shrugged. "It's probably doubtful I would Impress, since so many people want one," she admitted. "But..." She shrugged. "I'm guessing they have growth patterns similar to dragons?" she added thoughtfully.

Ferneth couldn't help but grin at her tone. Woe is the life of a candidate, forced to do chores for the good of the weyr. He wondered if the weyrbred candidates thought the same about chores as they did. Ferneth thought they did but they accepted the need more than he did. One thing the weyrbred and the holdbred probably agreed on was how much they disliked the Headwoman.
Ferneth was momentarily taken aback by Meira's sudden brightness. It didn't last long though, as she was quick to put herself below others. He frowned deeply at that. "I can't say I agree with that. You're more than acceptable if you were Searched, and don't tell me that you being Searched was a fluke. If you don't Bond this Hatching then I'll be very surprised," Ferneth said with a lot of conviction.
The 18 turn old nodded in agreement with Meira. No day was good for either but today would have been a waste if they hadn't taken a break to enjoy it at all. Ferneth knew they'd have to return to the weyr eventually but there was no rush. Such a nice feeling not to be rushed to do anything, he thought contentedly.
Ferneth listened with interest to her talk of the firelizard clutch. "Thanks for the heads up. I might head there and take a look soon then," his pause was considering, "well not soon soon but you know what I mean." Ferneth accompanied the statement with a grin. It didn't come as too big of a shock that she wasn't going to try and Impress one of the little creatures.
Ferneth nodded thoughtfully. Two young mouths to feed would be a little too much right away. He didn't know when the next dragon clutch would be laid but he figured there'd be enough time to get used to a flitter. "They aren't too different from dragons. The biggest difference is their size. I've just heard this from word of mouth though."

Meira shrugged, a sad smile touching her lips. “Actually, I wasn’t Searched at all,” she responded. “I—erm…I wanted to get away from…” She hesitated. It was too confusing to keep on lying like this. Or not lying, but rather avoiding the truth. She knotted her hands together, wondering if her birthplace would mar Ferneth’s opinions. It wasn’t her fault she’d been born there, or even that she was a girl, but suspicions were always focused on the North, and…
She sighed. “Well, I…I was kind of a healer at Benden Weyr, and…” Meira faltered, her head down as she walked. “I didn’t like it. I went back to the Healer Crafthall, but I didn’t want to make Benden mad at them either, so I came here, instead…” Her voice cracked at the end, and she swallowed in annoyance. She really shouldn’t have brought this up. This was bad, and what was more, it was past.
She managed to answer his grin—it was a pity to end this day right now anyway, even if a fire lizard was up for grabs. Warm, not humid, just a calm sort of day for a walk. “If you go too soon, Darling might just attack you for threatening her eggs,” Meira teased slightly. The mental image of that sweet little queen attacking anyone was a very amusing one, to say the least, but maternal pride over her eggs did change things a bit.
“They aren’t too different from dragons.”
Meira nodded. That was what she’d heard, too. Someone had vaguely mentioned their large, insatiable appetite when they Hatched as well; she grinned at the thought of a fire lizard consuming as much as a dragon. “I heard they eat a lot,” she commented, suppressing a giggle. “If you Impress one, the headwoman’s going to have a lot more chance to order you around when you go to get food.”

Ferneth was genuinely surprised by the news. She hadn't been Searched at all? If she was a candidate a dragon must have thought she'd Impress or Bond...They wouldn't just throw her in as a candidate otherwise...right? No answers were to be had from asking himself though. He was rather confused but either way she was a candidate now, right? That's all that should matter.
The more serious part of the conversation came just a moment after she told him she hadn't been Searched. So she is from the North, Ferneth thought. Healer at Benden...no wonder she knew so much about the Northern weyrs already. He thought about Mutasim again. The two were both from the North but they weren't bad people...Well okay, he didn't know about Mutasim but Meira had run away from the Healer Hall to protect it, hadn't she? Ferneth found himself unable to dislike her for that. "Well you're a candidate now, aren't you? It's often surprising who dragons or whers choose. When the wher clutch Hatches we'll see if you Bond with one from this clutch or another one but I bet you'll Bond eventually."
Ferneth chuckled at first but then acted shocked, putting a hand on his chest. "Attack me? Am I that threatening?" He asked with mock hurt. His wink afterward indicated he was joking if his tone hadn't already. He realized she might be right about him being attacked, or at the very least glared at. Having a miniature little gold ready to scratch his eyes out didn't appeal to him much so he might not end up going anyways.
Ferneth's eyes widened. Meira had a good point about the Headwoman. He rubbed the back of his head and grinned. "You might be right about that. But that's only if I Impress one. I might not and then I won't have to worry about getting it food," he pointed out. "Either way works for me." Either have a little companion or avoid the Headwoman, what a choice!

Meira bit her lip, embarrassed by the silence. No, she hadn’t been Searched so much as accepted, and there was a small part of that that spoke of condescension and made Meira uncomfortable, but so far Selenitas had proved a good home and she had no desire to leave, even if her arrival was a bit…strange. She would have been happy to stay as a healer, really, but her first choice was to Bond. A Wherhandler had an excuse to stay away from people, stay out of the sunlight where most people were, stay up at night, and keep odd hours that would generally keep limited contact, which suited Meira perfectly.
The wher Candidate had been bracing herself for a taunt, or a sneer—something. Perhaps shocked anger, silence, at being deceived. It was what she would expect…in fact, Meira guessed she was probably lucky nobody thought she was a spy for Benden or worse, since she already had isolated herself somewhat from conversations about the past and future, along with the fact that she rarely strutted around the Weyr. Not, she thought scornfully, they’d trust a girl with that anyway.
So Ferneth’s encouraging comment was confusing. “Yes…and I wish I could just forget about the past,” she murmured. “I guess it’ll be easier if I Bond.” She shrugged, and smiled wryly. “If I don’t Bond, I might just end up trying to Impress a fire lizard or a Salamandyr.” Although Salamandyrs didn’t have a reputation for being the sweetest little things around…
Meira grinned at Ferneth’s act. “Have you ever asked a fire lizard that?” she asked, giggling at the thought of being attacked by a frantically squealing fire lizard. It was a very amusing one, if not very kind. “Or perhaps you should march into the Weyr and stroke an egg, and see if the queen minds.” She’d probably act just like a protective queen dragon, the girl decided, since they were so alike—attack for her eggs’ protection.
“Fire lizards aren’t picky about who Impresses them, though,” she pointed out. “A Drudge could purportedly Impress if he or she got their hands on an egg—as long as you’re close to the clutch, you’ve probably got a pretty high chance of Impressing…although here,” and a grim chuckle escaped her lips, “Fire lizards seem to put as much thought Choosing as dragons do.” Her hand still ached from copying a detailed description of a fire lizard Hatching. Who on Pern cares how long a fire lizard dawdled before gobbling down the food anyway? “So basically you Impress and get sent on chores, possibly running the risk of having your fire lizard bite the Headwoman to defend you, or you’re all alone and the Headwoman eventually roots you out.”
Some choice.

Ferneth felt bad for his comment about Searches. It was an honest mistake but he still felt bad about bringing it up. Hopefully the conversation could still be salvaged. There were other topics to talk about after all. Most things seemed to resolve around some kind of Impression or Bonding. What else did candidates talk to each other about?
Ferneth grimaced ever so slightly. "I don't think you should forget the past. Get over it but not forget it," he said thoughtfully. He shrugged too before the mention of firelizards and 'Mandyrs. Well, they were a better topic than before and he was more than welcome to make the switch. "I've heard of those Salamandyr things. Never seen one though." Some might find that surprising, but he honestly hadn't.
Ferneth chuckled while shaking his head in the negative. "I haven't dared to. I'm too afraid to know the answer!" His faking ended there though. He grinned at the very idea Meira had. "I think I'd be attacked just thinking that nevermind actually doing it," Ferneth said with much amusement.
"That's true but if so many people want them as you said..." He let his sentence trail off, considering his chances as one of the newer people to the weyr. Then again...If he was close to the clutch he didn't have as bad a chance. Plus the thought of having a little pet 'accidentally' attack the Headwoman was kind of appealing... "I probably shouldn't be thinking this, but I'd be very happy to have a firelizard willing to defend me from that woman," he added.
