The whole group was halted when the two dimglows - a girl and the youngest boy - decided they didn't feel like running. Who cared if they felt like running or not? Were they stupid? If they tried to be rebellious, no doubt Elisabeta would make not only their lives miserable but all the Candidates would feel her wrath. If she had to run more than originally planned because of those two...
Her line of thinking was interrupted when finally they both complied. Thankfully. The frown that furrowed her brow softened as she focused her attention back on Farryl. Just run. Just run, keep in step, and get this over with. That's all she had to do.
It wasn't hard for her to keep up with Farryl, or to make her steps match the other woman's. She glanced to her side to see if whoever was next to her was keeping up - she knew even if she did well, if one of the others messed up they'd all get yelled at. Teamwork and all that jazz.
"Step sooner, you're not doing it right." She offered this advice in a hushed and soft tone. She wasn't trying to be bitchy or bossy - they already had enough of that in the class between Elisabeta and Casandra, thank-you-very-much.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Tavis groaned when they had to wait for the two who felt they were too good to run. Really, being here was painful enough - why were they dragging it out? Maybe while Elisabeta was busy threatening them he could slip out... Idly he wondered how far he'd get before she'd notice and send her Green after him. He flinched a bit at that thought. Claws in his shoulder and possibly torso? No thanks.
So when they were given the okay to go he matched his steps as best he could to Farryl's. The less attention he brought to himself the less likely he was to have to deal with Elisabeta face to face again. No doubt when he failed to Impress she'd regret her decision to drag him here and make him stand as a 'Candidate' anyway.
The only good thing about being in the Weyr was he might get to know more about his father. Maybe he could confront him if he was still here - surely if he punched the brownrider in the face they'd toss him out of the Weyr and he could go back to an honest living in the hold, right?
Distracted by his own thoughts he fell out of step - but the woman next to him was quick to correct him. Glancing over at the woman he felt his cheeks burn a light red as he actually noticed her for the first time. How he hadn't before was surprising - her bright red hair and womanly form were things any man, even a younger one, would probably notice and appreciate.
The blush faded quickly and he gave a curt nod as he corrected his steps so he was once more in step with Farryl and with the woman next to him. "Thanks. Though this whole thing is stupid if you ask me." He replied in an equally hushed tone, not wanting Elisabeta to hear - though she was busy with the two 'rebels' of the group and probably wouldn't notice anyway. Farryl might, but she didn't seem likely to turn around and snap at them then demand they run the length of the Weyr 1000 times for their insolence like the Candidatemaster might. "Tavis, by the way."

Do not fret Roselle-mine. They are a handful. You would not have liked one anyway. Tserieth said matter-of-factly to her bonded when she sensed Roselle's mild disappointment at not getting one of the razorclaws.
You're just happy you don't have to share my attentions.
No. The others wanted them because they feel they need things to help them be better than they are. You Roselle-mine are better already. The best. You do not need extra wings or claws to help you do things.
Oh you think so little one?
I am hardly little and would appreciate if you stopped that. It is demeaning and you know I do not like it. You are the littler one between us. I do not call attention to it.
Roselle smirked to herself, the telepathic argument and goading with her Green lifting her spirits. Yes she had wanted a razorclaw, but she certainly didn't need one - as Tserieth was quick to point out. She would manage, and there would be other hatchings later on. Her Green was probably enough whining and neediness right now anyways.
I do not whine nor am I needy.
Whatever you say little one.
The Green did not even give Roselle a response, but if she knew Tserieth at all she knew the dragon had given a snort and when she got back to where she'd left her she'd get the cold shoulder for awhile. Oh the joys of being a weyrling.
Nodding politely towards M'kai, not that he had likely noticed her arrival and would also miss her leaving, she turned on her heel and made her way down the hall.

Things had settled down for Roselle since she Impressed. If one could consider the constant care a dragonet needs as well as adjusting to a new voice in her head 'settling down' at all. Still she was a might happier than she had been prior to Impressing her Green, and so when Tserieth informed her of the Razorclaw hatching outside the Candidatemaster's room she smiled - yes, Roselle SMILED.
They do seem popular Roselle-mine. Could be useful. But really why are you so excited?
I just am, I never had a pet growing up - they weren't allowed. My happiness should please you my little green. Or are you afraid you'll get less attention or affection should I get one?
Afraid? You are amusing Roselle-mine.
Rolling her eyes Roselle headed towards the kitchens. Ducking in she managed to get a few chunks of meat that she guessed wouldn't be missed. From there she headed towards where she knew M'kai's room was, coming up on a small group in the hall she rocked up on her toes to see over those taller than her. Where were they anyways?
Nests, Roselle-mine. Birds have nests.
Ah, thank you my little one.
I wish you wouldn't call me little so often.[/color]
Another roll of her eyes - a habit that had become quite frequent since she Impressed Tserieth - Roselle looked along the wall until she noticed the nest nestled into the crack. Ah. There.
So she watched and waited. Not exactly sure how these things went. Keeping to herself she rolled the meat between her fingers and eyed the young one C'lan seemed to have impressed.

That was that. She was dead. They were going to throw her into the pot and she would be bitten and possibly eaten by whatever tunnelsnakes they had in there. Goodbye Selenitas Weyr. Goodbye chances of Impression, slim as they may have been before they were non-existent now. The normally fiery, energetic, tempting, sultry, creative redhead was at a loss. She simply hadn't a clue as to how to get herself out of this situation. Clearly one of them would only be happy once she was dead - and she suspected if her death was slow and painful he'd be even happier with that. The other was a bit more scatterbrained and she'd apparently offended him, so he was probably okay with her dying too.
The realization that she was in a helpless situation and felt completely helpless for one of the very few times in her life brought her to tears. She didn't sob, she didn't even make a noise. Her body just went limp as F'ur carried her and tears rolled down her pink tinged cheeks. Her mind was blank, completely blank - she was a goner for sure.
When K'sel grabbed her shoulder she tensed a bit, jumped slightly even but then went limp again. Defeated. Tears streaked down her cheeks as he asked what she did for fun and she just stared at him blankly. He was either being cruel and pretending she had some hope of getting out of this, or he really was that scatterbrained. She really didn't know which it was at this point.
Suddenly overhead there was a soft chirrup and a streak of bright turquoise dove at F'ur's head. Eros!
The blue firelizard used his whip-like tail to slap F'ur and then landed on Ivy. He glared at her then glared at F'ur - just what did that man think he was doing with his slave? She was his and while he had fun watching them toy with her for awhile he decided enough was enough. Prancing back and forth on whichever part of Ivy was best available to him he looked at F'ur and then K'sel, fixing them with a gaze that said 'back off, mine'.
Ivy couldn't be happier to see her little Blue, even if he was a pain - literally right now as his little claws dug in against her. Eros hissed when she shifted to try and get more comfortable - he was fine right where he was, would she please stop moving like that? He may fall! Claws dug in more against her and she looked up at him. "Eros get me a shiny."
Was she really bossing him around? Really demanding he actually do something? Really, the nerve! His long tail flicked and he gave a huff, eyes swirling a light red. Obviously she was acting out because of these two others. Why were they not putting her down like he wanted? Did he have to do everything? Another huff and he disappeared between.
Ivy fidgeted, her body no longer limp in defeat. She had a chance if Eros brought back her dagger, which is what she'd been asking for. Biting her supple bottom lip she waited... and waited... and waited...
Still nothing. Where was that sharding blue? She watched the air above her but he was no where to be found. Shards and shells!
More time passed - seemed like forever to Ivy - and finally something did appear, but not what she'd expected. A Bronze firelizard as well as a Brown and a Green appeared overhead, each clutching something in its claws. They dropped the items just as Eros re-appeared and settled on Ivy once more, a rather smug look on his face. He of course hadn't lifted a claw, but the two males whom he'd rubbed up on and crooned for as well as the silly little female were more than happy to do his bidding once he showed them where his Ivy-slave was. They dropped a few toys they'd taken from some of the weyrbrats. The Bronze had even brought a satchel of food and a small flask of wine he'd snatched from someone. A soft croon from Eros sent the other three firelizards on their way as he clawed at Ivy to make her more comfortable for him to stand on. Really, why was she so tense, didn't she know he'd be more comfortable if she relaxed?

Of course they were all late, did the Candidatemaster not notice it was barely light out?! Glowering, the usually happy woman definitely looked anything but as she glanced around and then back to the two leaders of this merry band of unfortunate souls. Why had they picked so many girls?! And the few boys the Searchriders had brought for this group were either too young or too... strange. Was that one wearing a skirt? Yeah... he was.
Ivy sighed as she realized this wouldn't be like it had been when Ka'aen had been the Candidatemaster. Why he had decided to resign was beyond her. She thought he did an excellent job, and he certainly didn't act like he had something shoved up his arse like Elisabeta was. Still, Ivy knew she'd have to endure whatever the Candidatemaster threw at her. Extra chores, already?
For a moment Ivy wondered if the chance at Impressing was really worth all of this. As she eyed Elisabeta and glanced back at Farryl she straightened up a bit. Yes. Yes it was definitely worth it. She couldn't risk messing up, this was the last turn they'd allow her to Stand. She was the oldest Candidate in the group, something that didn't really surprise her. No doubt since she'd already stood before she'd be expected to out perform the others. Oh joy.
Holding back another sigh she fell in behind Farryl and did her best to match the other woman's step. She didn't want to be right in front of Elisabeta so she'd done her best to stay closer to Farryl. Of the two she looked less likely to throw a punch at a disobedient Candidate - where as she could definitely imagine Elisabeta doing something along those lines. She wasn't pleasant at all.
--------------------------------------------
Tavis was indeed late. The last to arrive. He had only shown up because he knew that the blasted woman who'd kidnapped him was the one in charge of the 'Candidates' and she'd told him he was one now. He wasn't too keen on the idea of her bursting into his room and dragging him out - especially since he slept half naked. He glared at her as she started in on the group as a whole, noticing the glance she saved for him whens she mentioned not tolerating stupidity. If he thought he could get away with running up and punching her in the face he probably would have; while Tavis was rarely a violent young man, Elisabeta brought out the worst in him. It probably didn't help that the young man was pretty hormonal, a bit of a late bloomer - his voice had just changed less than two sevenday ago.
He looked around at the other 'Candidates'. At least they didn't look very happy to be there either, though they were probably just upset about the extra chores and early wake up. Idly he wondered if any of them had been Searched against their will. Sure he'd wanted to get to the Weyr - he'd already spent a turn journeying from Lighttower to Selenitas Hold and was working in the stables to earn marks so he could get safe passage to the Weyr - but he didn't want to be a dragonrider, nor did he even want to be considered to be one! He knew what that lot was, thank you very much, full of immoral people who went around planting their seed in young women and then leaving them with an illegitimate child to raise on their own. That was NOT going to be him. The fact that one of them even thought he might have 'what it takes' to be a dragonrider was downright offensive to him.
The only, and he very much stressed the only part, good thing to all of this was he got to be in a small group of people around his own age. Something he hadn't had the pleasure of doing for quite a long time. And, to top it off most of them were girls. Tavis wasn't very savvy with the ladies, he hadn't had time while working and prior to his leaving Lighttower he rarely saw and girls his age out and about. So looking at the girls he was practically surrounded by now made the hormonal teenaged boy shift a bit and stand up straighter. He flashed a forced smile - charming still but forced - at one of the girls before his attention was forced back to the Candidatemaster when she mentioned jogging.
Really? Jogging this early? Did she want everyone to hate her? Still, he figured he'd go on his own instead of being dragged around by Elisabeta (again), so he fell in step behind Farryl, watching her feet so he could make his pace match hers.

You are distracted, no? Perhaps wondering what it's like to - no, not quite but almost. Hmm, and the sands are rather hot. No matter, Tserieth is here now. Time to go, The green said to Roselle before moving past the girl and towards the food. She paused and glanced back with rainbow eyes. Aren't you coming?
Roselle blinked once. Twice. Three times. Her head snapped in the direction of The Last Scene Green as her mind was suddenly invaded by the somewhat bossy mind voice of the apple-green dragonet.
"Tserieth?" She hadn't meant for the name come out as a question, but it had as she continued to stare at the Green who just stared right back while giving an impatient flick of her long tail.
We did go over this, did we not? It is time to eat. Shoes. Shoes as well. For you, not for me. That would be awkward, would it not? Food first though. Come along.[/i]
The voice was soothing, even if a bit bossy, to Roselle. For the first time since her brother Reanil had passed away Roselle felt... complete again. Yes she would also have a hole in her heart from his passing, but right now even that hole was forgotten. All that mattered to the raven haired young woman was the Green. Her Green.
Still too distracted to care for your Tserieth? I am quite hungry. Famished even. Come come![/i]
Roselle felt a sudden pang of hunger, but she knew it wasn't her own - she could feel Tserieth's hunger as the bond of Impression cemented. This new sensation of being one with another being was enough to stir her into action. Long strides took her across the Sands to Tserieth's side and then in front of her. "Now who is falling behind?", Roselle asked with a smirk as she glanced over her shoulder to the hatchling.
Tserieth did not seem to find this amusing as she hurried after her bonded, a quick and awkward gait catching her up to Roselle as they made their way off to get her some food.

Taking a step back Roselle squared her shoulders and stopped biting on her bottom lip - no matter what she was NOT going back to Hyphen. Making this mental declaration to herself she realized she hadn't been paying as much attention to what was going on around her as she should have been. Where was all that blood coming from? She would have been concerned but M'kai was the Candidatemaster, not her. Let him do his duties and she would do hers - stand there and look foolish in bare feet on the hot sands while each egg hatched and each dragon passed her by.
Blues. Blues, Blues, Blues. Green. Brown. Another Green. Had she missed any? No, she didn't think she had.
A glance was given to the parents of this brood and she felt a sudden pang of guilt. Here she was so concerned about her own future when the Gold did not even have one... and when she was gone it was doubtful Burimyu would thrive. If the dragons hatching were any indication... there probably wasn't a Gold hiding in one of the eggs. Another glance was given, this time to the remaining Candidates. Even if by some off chance there were a Gold just waiting til the last moment to hatch... who would she go to? None of the males would get her. She had managed to avoid most the other female Candidates, except Isori but she had already Impressed. Despite her dislike for what the riders in Burimyu had done, stealing goods from the tithing convoys to Selenitas, she felt saddened by the thought of this being the first and last clutch for the Weyr. Were they to be the only Candidates to grace these long abandoned Sands?
Again, lost in thought. Though instead of the hatching eggs or stumbling dragonets catching her attention back to the event at hand, this time the heat of the Sands did. Shifting from one foot to the other she appeared to be impatient to any who looked at her and didn't notice her lack of footwear. Not that she knew that of course, she was just seeking some brief relief for her now reddened feet.
For better or worse, at least it seemed a bulk of the eggs had hatched already... just a few more to go and she would be free to soak her feet and continue to ponder her future - one that at this point she felt most definitely would not include a dragon.

Blue eyes widened and she glared up at the pair. "You aren't some crazy tribal wild men?! LET ME GO!"
She was screaming, a bit frantic, and a bit confused - which only added to the high pitch in her voice. She began to thrash around again, which only served to getting a knick on her nose from the small knife. A soft whimper escaped her lips and when he spoke to her again she went still and batted her eyes, "I am more useful for things other than eating."
Sure one of them might not fall for it, but maybe the other one would. A girl could only try, right? She sure wasn't about to allow herself to be dinner for these two mongrels, she knew that much as she spared a glance towards the pot. Taking a deep breath she looked up at K'sel and batted those big blue eyes again, giving the best smile she could manage in the situation. "Please if you let me go, I won't tell anyone about this. I'll go get you something from the kitchens if you'd like..."
She couldn't rightly figure out why they didn't just go get food from the Weyr themselves, though they didn't look very familiar to her. Maybe they weren't riders? But what Holdfolk would be wandering around the jungle like these two were? And even if they were from one of the Holds, they could just go to the Weyr themselves for food, right? Surely they didn't really intend to eat her... right?

Dark eyes watched as one of the other Candidates dropped down next to the injured Candidate and began tending to him, going so far as to take off his own shirt to do so. Interesting, it didn't seem as if his wounds warranted that but to each his own. She was busy watching them until the next eggs hatched and then her attention was pulled away - only to be brought back to them when one of the Blues pushed his way to the younger of the two boys. Nabrik, she thought his name was. Attention was turned then to the other Blue which went to another boy, and then to the Brown who suddenly gave out a loud call. Noisy little thing, wasn't he?
Eyes flicked to one of the other eggs as it cracked loudly. Her dark eyes stared at the dark eyes that peered from the surface of the shell before dancing over its full surface, inspecting the cracks to see if she could get a glimpse of what dragon would come from it. Probably another Blue, it seemed this clutch was full of them. Blues were fine and all but not something she was interested in.
Biting at her bottom lip she counted the remaining eggs. Only a handful remained, and that nervousness came back. What if there wasn't one here for her? Would she be sent back to Hyphen? Back to her horrible father and that proposed marriage she was about to be forced into? No, no she didn't think so. She'd find some usefulness for herself at Burimyu, even if it wasn't as a dragonrider.

Roselle was just rolling out of bed when suddenly she heard Jingth's call - she could tell the Gold was upset. She knew why of course, everyone in the Weyr did. Sighing she sat up and tugged her hair back into a loose knot behind her head. Securing it there with only a few wisps escaping to frame her face she stood and grabbed a grey shirt and some shorts, nothing bright and colorful - she knew this was generally a happy time even if she'd never been to a Hatching, but given the circumstances...
Bare feet hit the ground in an even pace. Not too fast and not too slow. For the first time since coming to Burimyu she felt butterflies in her stomach as everything suddenly became real. Before she had been so focused on being upset with that dimglow rider who Searched her and brought her to the wrong Weyr that she hadn't really considered what the Hatching would be like. She had gone through the lessons and listened to everything M'kai said about dragons, just as everyone else had - but it didn't all sink in until just now. Reaching the Sands she took a deep breath before making her way in.
Her toes curled a bit as she stepped onto the Sands, they were hot. Common sense told her to put on sandals before she left her room but she hadn't, perhaps because she wanted to experience everything in full force.
What would she do if she Impressed?
What would she do if she didn't Impress?
A shake of her head was given at the last thought, it didn't seem like an option. There were few Candidates to begin with, surely not all the newly hatched dragons would turn their nose up at her, right? A hint of fear flickered in her dark eyes as she glanced at the other Candidates. Were they as unsure as she suddenly felt? Her thoughts were interrupted as she realized two eggs had hatched and Impressed before she even got there. Torino?? He'd Impressed?? Seeing that boosted her confidence a little and eased her mind slightly. After all, if there was one for him, there had to be one for her... she hoped.
Straightening her shoulders her eyes darted to the Gold and Brown. She stepped closer towards them and dipped her head respectfully. She didn't address them, though she probably should have. Instead her attention was caught by the two eggs that were cracking on the Sands. She fell back in place amongst the other Candidates and held her breath as she watched the eggs, for the first time in a very long time Roselle felt hopeful and excited.

When Torino fell in step with her she arched a brow at him but said nothing. He picked up a pile she passed over and she watched him slink off towards the treeline. He was rather strange - he definitely didn't seem to want to be here, though if his Searchrider had failed to give him the details of where they were going as hers had she couldn't blame him. Still she wondered if he even wanted to Impress. Wasn't that a big thing for most people? He was one of the few around her age though, so if she decided to start talking to someone he would probably be her best bet. Even if he was raised by tunnelsnakes.
When they all returned with their bags she watched M'kai go through them. He announced the purpose of the exercise and she blushed ever so slightly when he looked her way, so there had been a point after all. When he declared her the 'winner' of the day's events she couldn't help but grin and glance at the boy who had come in second place - hopefully he wouldn't be too bitter about losing to a woman. As M'kai rambled on the rest of the names she glanced to Torino and chuckled to herself, he would probably be upset he didn't get last place.
Chin lifted a bit as she looked around at the other Candidates and then to M'kai. Nodding she offered a small, but genuine, smile. "Thank you."
She didn't think she was better than everyone else mind you - though the fact she'd just beat them all in the day of games did certainly make her feel a bit better about being stuck here. Making her way to the end of the field she waited for her lift back to the Weyr to arrive so she could relax and skip out of her evening chores.

Leaves? Leaves?
What in all of Pern did this have to do with becoming a dragonrider? She could understand some of the other challenges but this one seemed a bit ridiculous. Still she didn't have anything better to do... Idly she wondered if they did such silly things at the real Weyr... Damn that Tenlie for not telling her they were coming here!
Standing up she grabbed a sack and headed out towards the field. Stopping she let her eyes scan the area for a moment before making her way towards where the swimming challenge had been. She found a pile and stuffed it in her bag before turning on her heel. Making her way towards where they'd shot the slingshots she saw Isori and diverted the other way - towards the rock climbing area. Its not that she didn't like the other Candidate, she just wasn't fond of anyone else in this place just yet. Except maybe Torino, he might be worth getting to know - he was at least a bit cute, if nothing else. Stopping she turned to see if he was going to bother participating or not - she'd noticed he seemed keen on not winning at anything. Who had Searched him? He had no motivation, no drive to succeed.
Only a few seconds were wasted considering the man before she turned and looked at the pile of leaves in front of her. Hm. They weren't the ones she was supposed to be grabbing, so she ignored them and moved on. A few strides to her left and she found a pile of leaves she was after so she grabbed them up. This was too easy.
Leaves. Really?

While she wasn't afraid of heights she opted out of climbing the rock face. It wasn't that she wasn't a skilled climber - in fact she was. However she preferred to save her energy for whatever might come next. When M'kai gave them their next task she was bit disappointed since she could have climbed and still been able to do this - its not as if remembering things took a lot of energy after all.
So she picked a mat and sat there with her eyes trained on M'kai. Occasionally they would flit around to the other Candidates as they took their time settling in, especially Torino. She still hadn't decided if his earlier comment on her coming in last in swimming was meant to be rude or not. He was a bit... odd.
As M'kai spoke again she looked at her tablet and marked it where she believed it was. True she didn't know everything about the anatomy of a dragon but surely she could at least guess at most of them, right?

As if he had been timing it for just that moment, Roselle heard the voice of one of her father's calling out across the abandoned gather area. Eyes shifted in that direction and then she set her shoulders and nodded, "The Weyr would be a welcome change of scenery I would think."
Had she really just accepted this woman's offer to be Searched? Was she really going to go off to the Weyr and be a Candidate? Had she lost her mind? Rusel would surely disown her once he discovered she'd gone off with a dragonrider... And a small smirk tugged at her lips at the thought.
Her brother called out again and she could hear he was getting closer, "If you're done with your business here, I should think leaving sooner rather than later would be best..." Roselle said to Tenlie, glancing at her salamandyr and the dragon looming behind her.

Frowning as she came in last Roselle hurried out of the water and wrung out her hair then her tank top. Grabbing her pants she tugged them back on before following M'kai and the other Candidates to the next event.
She listened carefully to M'kai as he explained what they were expected to do. Taking up the slingshot she smirked a bit to herself. Growing up with brothers she definitely knew how to use one of these. Perhaps she'd do better at this than she had at swimming.
So Roselle waited until M'kai gave the order to begin and she grabbed up the first stone. Putting it in place she pulled it back as far as she could then released. It hit the ring and she snorted a bit. Maybe she wouldn't do so well after all... Another stone was selected and she repeated the process of tugging it back and letting it go - this one made it through the ring! Huzzah, now if only she could keep this up...
