Killed in the Siege of Selenitas
Humans:
Name: Marra
Age: 19
Gender: Female
Sexual Orientation: Bisexual
Rank: Journeyman Harper
Physical Appearance: Marra is rather short, standing at 5’3”, and this image of smallness is not helped by the fact that she isn’t the most mature-looking woman on the planet. She is well-endowed in her bust, perhaps a little too well, but the rest of her body is very small, almost making her appear disproportional in some ways. She is rather stockily built, not too thin or willowy, but more forceful looking. Her legs are very strong, with hard calves underneath muscular thighs. However, her arms manage to preserve a shred of grace. These arms are also riddles with various scars from multiple causes, along with calloused fingers from instrument playing.
Her face is heart-shaped, topped off with mildly curly brown hair that reaches to a point just below her shoulders. This hair is always swooped into a bun, with Marra telling everyone that it is gross-looking whenever it is worn down. This makes it so not many people have ever seen her hair, save for when she takes it down to redo a messy hair job. Her small ears are hidden beneath this mass when down, but are fortunate to not stick out of her bun. They lie low on her head, keeping her face looking average. Her complexion is rather pale, but she finds it brings out the gray in her eyes more. When she is tan, however, the blue shines more brightly than the gray. Above her eyes are her thick, articulate eyebrows, yielding more expression than her eyes would ever allow. She is able to raise one at a time in addition to both, letting her silently show her opinion on a subject. Her nose is small, set above average-sized, pink lips. They are usually curved into a half-smile, or are indifferent. Two small moles rest in a curved descent on her chin, adding personality to her rather bland figure.
Personality: Though she does her best to hide it, Marra is unbelievably cynical. Anything that happens she blames on the selfishness of humankind, even if it be a good thing. However, it doesn’t stop her from liking people or even being affectionate. She simply accepts their flaws, however much she may despise them. She knows and admits her own flaws, identical to the ones of the rest of the Pernese, but she wallows in them, turning her bitter and angry.
This anger can sometimes be a problem for Marra. She will suppress it around people, but when no one is looking, she may send a punch at the wall. Fortunately, it takes a lot of anger for her to do that- otherwise, she will just bite her tongue and let it slide. She also gets quite angry in social situations- a few people at a time are about all she can handle. Any more than that, and she becomes quite hard to be around.
Despite these hard character flaws, Marra can be quite kind when she needs to be. Even if she is cringing on the inside, she tries her best to see the good in everyone. She defends all but those who she truly hates, and is willing to help anyone with just about anything. Weyrbrats are her favorite, and she loves to simply be around them. She would love to have her own someday, but only when she gets herself into a stable lifestyle and relationship. She isn’t one to go into huge things like that blindly.
Her one passion in life is music, and it is obvious that nothing else could get in the way of it. Though dragonriding was a tempting dream, she stuck with reality, deciding that music was her one true love. She mainly sings first soprano, but will take mezzo-soprano if needed. She loves being the soloist, and rare is the time when she considers someone worthy of taking that spot if she is unable to do so. She also doesn’t mind singing the chorus, and she also is getting to be quite good at conducting. Whenever she sees someone conduct poorly, one shouldn’t be surprised to see her march up to the conductor and lecture him or her on how to do it properly. She is not as strong instrumentally, but her instrument of choice is the pipe and the short-pipe, though she can also handle harps and gitars if desperately needed to.
History: Marra was born in Tillek Hold, with her parents being shipbuilders along the coast. The first four Turns of her life were blissful, with her living on the shipyard by the sea, enjoying swimming and goofing off with her little holdbrat friends as her parents worked all day. Sometimes, they would venture along the shoreline, hunting for flitter eggs or little sea-side fruits. Life was good for little Marra.
However, one day, her parents announced that their family would be moving inward, toward Ruatha. Happily oblivious, Marra and her baby brother Materin went along, excited for new adventures in a new land. Life once again sank back into the norm. Her parents lived on the outskirts of Ruatha, farming the land. Marra and Materin were sure to help, loving to help their father weed the gardens, singing merry little songs as she did so.
It wasn’t long after when Marra’s second little brother, Berellon, was born. Things just got better and better for Marra, but alas, education needed to start sometime, didn’t it? With the birth of Berellon, her parents sent the seven Turn old off to the Hold’s harper to learn the Teaching Songs and about how Fort was the greatest Weyr of them all.
Music instantly came to Marra as though she had always known it. At each little bit of theory she learned, she craved more. Treble and bass clef were learned quickly, followed by time and key signatures, and later on into different chords. Marra’s parents knew she was bound for Harper Hall.
But before that happened, drama struck. Marra’s mother caught her father lying with another woman, and her mother was too full of pride to simply accept it. Packing their bags, she took Materin and Berellon, and sent Marra off to Harper Hall rather than deal with such a sticky situation back in their cot.
Even though Marra was in a new place full of the things she loved, she whirled through a depression for a Turn. Her singing was glorious, but that was all that was truly noted from her. When not singing, she faded into the shadows, practicing alone or wallowing in her hatred of humanity and grief that her happy family had been torn apart by one simple act of her father.
Fortunately, the Headwoman, Jenicey, began to notice that Marra appeared to be unwell, and managed to forage a connection with the now fifteen-Turn old girl. Marra, stunned by this comfort, reluctantly let Jenicey into her circle. Things finally began to look up for Marra, who now saw Jenicey as a mother-type figure. However, Jenicey is the only person Marra thinks is a true person- everyone else she sees as merely selfish people, but will cope with them anyway because she believed that she is also one. It is because of Jenicey that Marra’s relationship with both parents were patched back up, and for that, Marra is forever grateful.
Since then, Marra bloomed. Her soprano range only moved up, and her lower range also expanded. She threw every bit of herself into music, her enthusiasm for the art surprising some people. It was with this enthusiasm that at sixteen, Marra walked the tables and became a Journeyman.
The instant the need came up, Marra requested a transfer. She was loathe to leave Jenicey, but she didn’t want to risk abuse of the holders who were following Benden and Fort’s ideas that women were inferiors- though Harper Hall was a safe haven for women, it was common knowledge that if she were sent to a major Hold, she would risk abuse. That was the reason Selenitas Weyr became her choice- she would be free to do whatever she wished.
This has been where Marra has lived for the past Turn- however, her distant nature still has her being slightly withdrawn from others- so who’ll try to fight through this stony exterior?
