Name: Kintas
Age: 69
Gender: male
Sexual Orientation: heterosexual
Rank: beastcraft master –runnerbeast expert.
Physical Appearance: An old man yet one kept in shape by his active life, Kintas bears his iron-grey hair and his wrinkles with both dignity and acceptance. Kintas moves so vigorously once he gets going that few know how much his joints pain him in cold weather.
His face is weather beaten and heavily lined around his mouth and eyes mostly with humour lines. His hazel eyes are very sharp and miss neither one speck of dirt on his beasts nor one nuance of their behaviour. Kintas cuts his hair when he remembers so it often falls in his face to be blown or flicked back, however no matter how busy the day is or what disasters befall Kintas always remembers to shave.
He dresses as soberly as possible and for hard work rather than to show off, most of his clothes are apprentice made, in shades of dull green or brown. No one would ever guess that Kintas was a craftmaster and a moderately prosperous holder by his appearance.
Personality: a faultlessly practical and eminently frugal man. Kintas never panics, if thread was falling through his roof he’d be thinking of some way to stop it and patch the hole up before it even occurred to him to panic. If he can’t find a solution to a situation himself he’ll seek advice from someone. In return he’ll offer simple, practical advice to anyone who asks, although it should be noted that his romantic advice is not the best.
Since Kintas spent so much of his time scrimping and saving every 1/32 mark to get his runner line started up frugality became a habit with him. If there’s some use left in an object you can bet your bones that Kintas will find it, even vegetable peelings are saved and baked into a bread ration for the runnerbeasts. At this point it should be said that one place Kintas would never scrimp is on anything for his precious runners, they have the best of everything he can afford.
You may have guessed by now that runnerbeasts are Kintas’ life’s work, greatest passion, and his obsession all rolled into one. His aim is to breed animals that are strong, fast, surefooted and above all intelligent. He sells whatever mares he doesn’t intend to breed (often he’s bought, trained, bred from, and then sold on a mare), gelds whatever colts he doesn’t want to breed and sells on most of them, and trains whatever he does keep to saddle or harness. Kintas also trains his stallions to saddle as it’s one of his firm beliefs that regular exercise and handling makes them more controllable at breeding time, when his studs aren’t standing they’re working. He often makes extra marks by hiring out his harness trained runners with himself or his granddaughter, Roshya, to work with them.
History: History: Kintas was born in a minor hold in the South not big enough to rate a Lord but too big to be classed as a cothold. His mother wasn’t joined to anyone but had several overlapping relationships. She took precautions against pregnancy, unfortunately for her those precautions grew less effective as time rolled by and evidently failed altogether leaving her with a child who had no identifiable father that she didn’t really want.
Kintas grew up blissfully unaware of how his mother was generally regarded in the hold until he was in his seventh turn. In the spring of that turn Kintas’ mother became pregnant again and this time tried to abort the child by drinking tansy tea (if anyone has an idea for a Pernese parallel evolution I’d welcome it), sadly she didn’t know how strong to make it, being unversed in herb lore and reluctant to seek a healer, and made a decoction of tansy that was lethal to her as well as the unborn child. Young Kintas didn’t find this out until he was older; he was told that his mother had died of an illness.
Kintas was fostered by his mother’s brother, a moderately successful breeder of racing runners, and it was noted that the boy had a way with runnerbeasts. When he was of an appropriate age to be apprenticed he was sent to a beastcraft master who worked at Selenitas Hold.
By the time Kintas was fifteen he had the kind of clear ambition most people are not blessed with, he wanted to someday own his own cothold and breed the best runnerbeasts on Pern, a lofty ambition for an orphaned boy with no hope to inherit property. He realised this almost immediately, and saved every mark right down to the 1/32 he sometimes got for running errands or seeing to an important person’s runner while they were at the hold on business.
By the time Kintas achieved his mastery he had saved up enough for a modest cothold and a small amount of attached land. He had also developed a serious relationship with a young lady of the Hold. Within a turn of becoming a master of his craft Kintas and his wife were firmly entrenched in his cothold and expecting their first child.
Sadly only eleven turns later Kintas’ wife died of one of the many unnamed fevers that infest the south. Kintas mourned for her but was prevented from falling into depression by having to tend his rapidly growing herd of runners and care for his four sons.
None of Kintas’ sons seemed destined to take over his holding, indeed they all left home to take apprenticeships at various crafts. In coming turns his runner breeding project would become the centre of his life, and his home would undergo more modifications than a child’s excuse for fighting in the hallway, including the purchase of additional grazing land and the original wooden stable building being replaced with a lower maintenance stone one with a slate roof, little did Kintas know then that this would be the best building decision he ever made.
Four and half turns back Kintas’ youngest son, Randal came through the Hold bringing his timid wife, and his two daughters with him. It seemed to Kintas that his youngest son had similar troubles with Roshya to the ones Kintas had when Randal was young, they both wanted something that the lives of their fathers couldn’t give.
After a week of observing the family and most particularly Roshya, Kintas offered to foster the girl for a while and teach her his craft if Randal and she were willing. The enthusiastic response he got to that offer from Roshya made Kintas a very happy old man.
Since taking on Roshya Kintas has trained her beside his other apprentices, and aimed to teach her everything he can about owning, training, and breeding runners and other beasts. Shortly after Roshya came along Kintas’ senior apprentice became a journeyman and left for a position in another Hold.
After three turns He allowed Roshya to pick out one of the two turn old runners to train, and almost exploded with pride when she gentled and trained the filly to saddle, not that he ever let her know that of course.
Earlier this turn the other apprentice Kintas was training has also left for possibly greater things, since then Kintas has been looking to take on another apprentice as there is quite a bit more work than Kintas and Roshya can easily get through.
((Thought I’d add a note for the animals Kintas owns here. This is mostly for my own reference; feel free to say how realistic to Kintas’ position in society you think this list is (I know you would anyway . Hopefully I haven’t gone overboard.))
