"Everything looks just fine, Weyrleader. It should. You've been dealing with this stuff for over ten turns. I still don't understand why you wanted me to look over your shoulder."
S'rei looked down at his one-time friend. This lesson, he was more than awake, having been up for hours. Far too early to wake up, but hey. At least he wouldn't be falling asleep in the middle of his own lecture. "Don't read anything into it. I just don't want to be embarrassed by mixing up my information with a dragonhealer in the room."
The greenrider regarded him closely, before moving over to a seat and settling there with obvious weariness. S'rei took one last glance at the board behind him. There were only a few words there: cuts, fractures, diseases, threadscore, and wing injuries. All was written in a direct, utilitarian script, distinctly masculine but far more legible than the notes he'd hastily jotted down on the parchment that now lay on the desk. Go ahead and call the weyrlings, Salenth.
Overseeing some of what was going on outside the weyrling barracks - surprisingly with some help from Phremath - the bronze spoke into the minds of the older dragonets. Most would already be up; weyrling lessons always happened at about this time. Senior weyrlings. Come to the Weyrling barracks, to your usual classroom. You will need your riding leathers again. As usual.
Jessereth and Z'hin were of the first to arrive, the bulky brown setting down with marked gentleness as His slid down the dragon's flank. The man removed the harness swiftly. It wasn't necessary, but Jessereth liked the feeling of freedom, if only for a candlemark or so. Z'hin was still walking with a limp, but he no longer needed the cane, and was performing roughly on the level of all the other weyrlings here. Even with the next to useless left arm. Jessereth was more than just a little proud of His - and relieved.
After five minutes had passed, S'rei marked down those who had come and, leaning back against the desk, immediately launched into the lecture. Most of the lesson would be spent outside as it was...Today they'd be taking the formation drills they'd been practicing on the ground into the air. Things were becoming distinctly more military for the older weyrlings now. And more dangerous. The Weyrleader had a sheaf of tests the weyrlings had undergone just yesterday, over the terrain of the weyr and the surrounding holds. A few of the weyrlings would need to be drilled more on this information. They'd be learning the terrain for all the hot spots on Pern soon enough, and in two months...Betweening.
"Your dragons are nearly at their full growth, and will be putting on mass rather than length and height from here on out. We've already talked about cuts and illnesses and whatnot before, or at least your Weyrlingmasters should have. I'll review those briefly. Minor cuts should be treated with redwort - which you all have - and watched for infection. Major cuts requiring sutures are for the dragonhealers to look after. Those are treated with numbweed and usually a different antiseptic. Just do as the healers tell you. Fractures aren't too common. Your dragons are strong. But they do happen. A simple fracture only needs two splints, set at a ninety degree angle, and held in place by bandages.
"Compound fractures are obvious. They'll distort the limb. These must be taken to the dragonhealers, who may have to use internal splints and other such things. Your role is to see that your dragon's rested, is given liberal numbweed and is not developing an infection.
"Most illnesses your dragons get will be respiratory. Some of you have already noticed how much mucus they can get in their lungs. Rest usually is enough to correct the issue. Rest and fluids. With pneumonia, they'll need steam inhalation and should be separated from the other dragons. Again, rest should take care of them. Labored breathing, a cold hide and dull eyes are the symptoms. If you're not sure, ask a dragonhealer."
S'rei paused. He knew he was going pretty fast, but all of this was what had already been covered previously. Basic dragonhealing. Now onto some of the newer things. "Not much has been said about Thread injuries yet, and you're still a good six months or so away from joining the Queen's wing. This will be covered multiple times up to that point, so don't worry if you don't get it all now. Minor threadscore wounds will be treated by the rider. About half the falls you fly, your dragon will be scored at least once, especially the larger dragons. It's common. If your dragon is scored, you will immediately go Between to the Weyr. This will kill the Thread. Afterwards, rinse out the wound, making sure to get out all of the residue, and apply redwort and numbweed. There is no need to cover a minor wound, and in most cases you will return to the fall with your dragon.
"One potential complication with even minor Threadscore is what we call Rupture veins. This is when ichor vessels have been damaged by the Thread, and continue to seep into the infected area, resulting in discoloration and more pain than normal. Apply numbweed and take them to the dragonhealers immediately, or the tissue may die.
"With deep threadscores, your primary - and vital - role will be to calm your dragon. Go Between to the Weyr. Dragonhealers will be on hand to take care of your dragon as best they can. Ichor transfusions are sometimes needed. Your dragon may also be asked to supply the ichor. Dragons don't reject ichor, so this shouldn't be a problem.
"Minor wing injuries repair themselves within a few days. Major wing injuries are treated by dragonhealers, and rarely take longer than eighteen months to heal. It is important that you and your dragon realize that most injuries heal up for a dragon with few complications - as long as they survive the initial trauma, which is mostly up to you. There is no reason to believe you won't fly again. Don't let your lifemate become depressed over something that almost never happens."
The Weyrleader smiled, then. "If you need notes on these procedures, I've got some for you, along with the tests you took on terrain recognition. Those of you who will require personal instruction have a note on your tests. Please go to the Weyrlingmasters' offices directly after this lesson to schedule a time. We're moving outside, with a few new things on the agenda that should liven things up. Come get your tests."
Once the weyrlings had picked up the papers and stowed them somewhere for safe-keeping, the Weyrleader strode from the classroom and out into the growing light. It was actually a fine morning, chill and crisp. A good day for a weyrling lesson. Even if he was rather annoyed that he kept having to step in for the people he'd appointed to lead these weyrlings.
