Auryn paused as she neared a corner in the large hall of the Weyr. There were hushed voices that seemed to be listening every so often for an intruder. What was going on here? She inched forward, feet bare except for a bit of cloth around the soles of her feet to protect them from the harsh grit of sand that seemed to permeate this entire place. He hands moved along the wall behind her for support. Finally she was close enough to make out the mumbled words.
.... "I just, I was just doing what I was told. Shmee wanted more tea to ease her stomach of that dreaded morning sickness. Poor woman had been having such a rough go of this pregnancy already. What with all this nonsense from Benden and the like. I was only to get her some tea. Nice Chamomile with a spot of peppermint. Would settle just right and nicely so."
The drudge was older, looking to be the age of most Aunties and was wringing her hands in a terrible manner. But she had just said she had just went to get some tea. Well that was certainly harmless. The other drudge was young and still had a lot of life in her, she leaned against the wall almost as though this older woman spun stories all the time. To Auryn though, even looking at the back of the older woman she seemed terrible disturbed.
"So? You got the Weyrwoman some tea. Big deal."
"Oh but it is! You don't understand you young whelp. Just listen and listen well. Just keep your mouth hushed if you know whats good fer yah. I went to Trenlor since he was already in the kitchens you see. He asked what I be doin, always asking what I be doin that one. I dun like him. Anyway he said that he had just the thing to ease the pains of a womans stomach that is growing thick with child and dropped some white powdered stuff into the tea that I had just made. I don't think it was medicinal child. I think it was poison."
The younger drudge finally caught on and stood upright glancing all about quickly causing Auryn to duck back behind the corner in a swift movement her head hitting the wall behind her. She wanted to call out but threw a hand over her mouth. She couldn't be found out now. What was the name the old woman had mentioned?
"You said Trenlor put something in her drink? I knew that old bastard was up to something. Don't worry Tilly, I'll keep my mouth shut and watch your back. Don't let him know I heard any of this...."
Auryn inched back as slowly as she could from where the two of them were talking. So Shmee had been poisoned? no wonder she lost the child, not to mention almost keeled over! As soon as she was far enough away Auryn let her feet fly beneath her in search of the Weyrleader S'rei. She rushed outside of the hall almost smacking face first into yet another drudge. Shard it they seemed to be everywhere right now, "You there, tell me, have you seen S'rei?"
"no miss, I dun be payin attention to him. Though I would try the area right above the falls."
Auryn dipped her head in thanks and continued on running to where the water went over the ledge and into the main canyon that housed the rest of the Weyr. There near its ledge stood the Weyrleader. She slowed her speed now that she had found him and walked up next to him. Bowing her head in politeness before looking at him, "Sir, I just came across some information that I think you desperately need to know of."

Salenth winged over the span of the river, making a tight turn on a wingtip before coming back in the direction of His. You really think this will work? I hope so. The time it takes to row the boats across all this water, with it's swift currents, is causing quite a few problems. In an emergency it could be fatal. Keep flying. I've almost got the sketch finished. The bronze pumped his wings again and made another pass. Don't you think it will be dangerous to build, though? Once the ice starts melting with the coming of spring, the waters will be much more dangerous. We should be finished with most of it by then, if I can get things started up soon. The dragons can help with the construction. That'll make things go quicker.
S'rei's hand moved swiftly over the parchment he held before him, the hurried lines forming up in what was turning out to be a fairly accurate sketch of the river's path and divergences, along with the general location of the buildings. Anything that the Weyrleader could see, he could reproduce. Or, as in this case, what Salenth could see for him. It was a rather useless skill most of the time, but in this instance, there was a need for it.
Salenth turned one last time, settling onto the bank beside His and lowering his neck to get a good look at the sketch. S'rei was busy penciling in preliminary walkways. He'd actually worked up what looked like a few large platforms where a gold or a couple of greens could land, as well. You're not just thinking of a few walkways.
"No. We could probably build some more housing on stilts in the river itself, to put guests during Hatchings or some of the dragonless or other weyrfolk once we have to carve more weyrs into the cliff face. Aslath's clutches will be large from here on out, now that we're in a Pass. And we'll have two more clutching queens soon. This weyr was built for dragons in an Interval."
The bronze, who had a rather long attention span, continued to watch the plans His was forming take shape on the parchment in silence. Another moment passed, and then a voice intruded on the bronzepair. Salenth's massive cranium turned to eye the girl curiously. It was unusual for such a young one to approach S'rei like this, even though His wasn't exactly unapproachable. People tended to walk on eggshells near any man who bore the title 'Weyrleader.' Must be the residual effect of what was going on throughout the rest of Pern.
It was another few moments before the man himself turned to her, as he took the time to finish what was in his head before he forgot it, rolling up the parchment and placing it in the cylindrical carrying case at his side before turning his attention to the girl. "Information..." he echoed contemplatively. His eyes fell on the young woman questioningly. "What might this information be?" He hoped it wasn't anything trivial. Though, given the fact she approached him at all - he rather doubted she'd come to him unless she felt it urgent.

Auryn was undaunted by both bronze dragon and his rider. If this was to be her Weyrleader she had better go about learning how to talk to him and be unafraid of him. Though from the first look there didn't really seem to be anything that she needed to be afraid of. She evened out her breathing after running to find him. When she spoke again she wanted it to be completely coherent. After a while her breathing became normal and she was able to look straight at the face of her leader.
"Weyrleader S'rei, I do not wish to divulge to much in such a public place however, I have news on what brought your Shmee, our Weyrwoman, so much harm."
Well if that didn't catch his attention nothing would and she would have to be out with it and have the possibility of Trenlor being with in ear shot and packing up before something could be done about it.
"I have a good ear and a quick mind sir. I was not mistaken in the information that I heard. I would greatly like to help bring justice to they who harmed her. No one should be deprived of a child, especially in that way." She hoped that she had not spoken too much, but its how she felt. Auryn wanted to be a part of this Weyr. An educated one as well, that knew how things ran and knew who to talk to and where to go. She would not be another stupid candidate that felt the brunt by either being left on the sands, or having her dragon die by her own lack of conscience. She had seen the kid's and lambs of her animals be born still and it had chilled her to the bones then. She could not even imagine what the Weyrwoman and her mate were going through. Her eyes still held to the Weyrleader's face, but there was a softness amongst her determination to see this mission through.

S'rei's eyes narrowed dangerously as the girl finally spoke. The miscarriage was common knowledge at this point. He knew that. And, truly, he couldn't think of anything else she could be talking about. The only other danger Shmee had been in - that he was aware of - had taken place almost a turn ago. That was, ironically, when things started developing between them. The Weyrleader waited for her to continue. Despite her concern for how public the place was, she didn't seem as if she was finished, and S'rei rarely spoke based on assumptions. If this harm she spoke of was what he thought it was, that was a very personal subject.
His jaw tightened. Though Shmee had been decidedly happier lately, they still weren't at the same level of trust and intimacy they'd shared before the miscarriage - and that rankled S'rei. It also bothered him that Auryn had the audacity to try to empathize with what had taken place. She could never understand what it was like. Never. He'd lost his child, that day, and very nearly had his mate die in his arms. The Weyrleader resisted the urge to snap at her. This girl was only trying to help, even if she was going about it rather clumsily.
"Salenth."
The bronze lowered himself. S'rei nodded to the dragon, as he slung the leather carrying case over his shoulder. "We should speak of this where it won't be overheard. If I may?" More a formality than an actual request, as he didn't wait for her response. The Weyrleader had them both mounted and Auryn clipped to the harness with the speed of familiarity. Salenth rose, springing into the air, and soon his great wings were carrying them away from any prying ears.
S'rei's arm had encircled the girl's waist out of habit, drawing her back into him. "All right," he stated by her ear, raising his voice to be heard over the wind. "Tell me what you heard. No embellishments. I don't want to hear any of your interpretations, either. Just what was said."

Auryn was not startled by the glare that quickly spread across her Weyrleaders face. It was not as though it were an easy subject to talk about, even more so when it involved his own mate. The candidate barely had time to think before she was swung up onto the great bronze's neck and hooked into the riding straps. This was only her second time on a dragons neck and she had a fleeting moment of sadness that she would not be able to enjoy it fully. There was a more important task at hand. As S'rei's arm wrapped around her waist she had a moment to inhale sharply as mixed feelings of surprise and worry took her. She listened to his words and took another breath to compose herself. No embelishments.
She closed her eyes to focus her mind and began to speak, "There were two drudges in one of the inner halls of the main building. They were talking in hushed tones, an older one with graying hair and ever wringing hands. She was saying how she had only been going to give the Weyrwoman tea, but before she left the kitchens she encountered a man by the name of Trenlor. Trenlor went to her and put a white powder into the tea saying that it would help the baby and ease the Weyrwoman's pains. I know the name was Trenlor because I waited until I heard the name spoken a third time. The younger drudge that was there with the old woman seemed to be unsurprised by the fact that it was him, saying that she had expected the old bastard to be up to something. Once I had the name I did not wait any longer and came straight to you."
There, that was the story. She had made no embelishments and had told it with all the information that she had. If he requested at a later time she would give descriptions of the two drudges if he needed to talk to either one of them again on the matter. But for now she opened her eyes and looked at the dragon beneath her and her new home beneath them. Even with the news that she had found and now passed on she could not help but smile inwardly at the feeling of being on the back of a dragon. She hoped that the information she heard would be helpful to S'rei and that things would get sorted out quickly. Would she be remembered? She thought to herself for a moment and realized that she didn't care. She had only seen the Weyrwoman once and thought the woman hollow and callous. However, with the ordeal she had been through Auryn could not blame her, even if she had never been through a situation like the one Shmee had.

That - was her idea of no embellishments? The name, though. Trenlor. He was more than familiar with that name. The healer was one of the dragonless, and had took to healing after losing his dragon in the wars. While his dragon had died before S'rei and Salenth arrived at Benden, he was still on at the Weyr as a healer. And he was another one who worked closely with C'leon. The bronzerider had never been privy to their frequent meetings, but the name sparked something that had been lingering at the back of his mind. Was it possible...? He'd been puzzled when Trenlor transferred to Selenitas. C'leon and Trenlor didn't have what he'd call a friendly relationship, but they didn't seem to be having any problems, either.
That was all secondary, though, to the flare of anger rising up inside him. He'd been scouring the weyr for information on what happened that morning! Why wouldn't he have heard about this before now? If Trenlor had slipped something into Shmee's tea, wouldn't whoever saw that think that maybe it was just a little weird? Calm down. But - Calm down. Salenth - Calm down! If you're going to tear someone apart, you'd best make sure he's the one responsible, and you'll never get that sort of proof if you kill the drudge who didn't tell you. She put Shmee in more danger by staying quiet. S'rei's response had turned deadly cold. This is hearsay, Mine. You don't know if this candidate really heard what she claims to have heard, or if she heard it correctly. Maybe the healer didn't poison the tea, and the drudge just thought he did. You can't just murder everyone you suspect. Who said anything about murder?
Regardless of the truth, they needed to take a good close look at Trenlor. He'd left Benden without falling out of the good graces of C'leon, and S'rei, like a complete idiot, hadn't even though to question that. Benden's spy might well be right under his nose. Taking a deep breath, S'rei attempted to let go of some of this blind rage. Salenth was right. They needed the facts, not speculation. "Trenlor. You're certain that's the name?" After a brief moment, he added, "I'm going to need you to take me to this older drudge. We've got more than just a few hanging around the Weyr. You can identify her?"

She could feel him tense behind her, feel the dragons body tense in response. They were so high off the ground. So very high. What if he thought HER part of the plot and had her killed as well? Killed for trying to help? Well that would certainly be a long drop between. She shivered involuntarily and then startled as S'rei started to speak again. Was she sure of the name? Of course she was sure! She could have never been more sure in her life. She wouldn't have even gone to the Weyrleader with such infromation had she not been sure. She didn't want innocents to die!
Then it dawned on her. What if the information was the drudge was a set up? What if it was actually the drudge who had poisoned Shmee and was trying to set up this Trenlor fellow? Unfortunately none of this was for her to decide. She was just a pawn now. A pawn in an ever growing elaborate scheme. And to what ends?
"Yes, the name is Trenlor, and yes... I will identify her for you." There she went again being as short and concise as she could. She wasn't just going to say yes once or twice, not without clarifying the information that she was saying yes to. That would only be a fools mistake and she was no fool. Well depending on how all of this turned out, and if she was even alive to be a candidate again, she would certainly think twice about being the one to deliver information. Then again if it had been another who she told, she would still be questioned about it. Either way in the end it would still be here in the air on a dragon she didn't really know with a man who may kill her because of his unrelenting rage.

"All right."
Salenth took that as the cue it was, wheeling into a tight turn which brought them directly above the Main Hall. The landing platform beside it was just large enough for a gold, which would make it rather comfortable for the leading bronze of Selenitas. He spiraled almost lazily downwards, coming to a rather soft landing. The Weyrleader's hands worked at the clip, releasing Auryn. He helped her down. Taking a moment to lean against Salenth, the man gazed toward the building, as if trying to see through the very walls. The bronze crooned to His. Another moment, then S'rei seemed to come to himself, the man looking down on the candidate.
His face had turned inscrutable, a calculating gleam behind the eyes the only semblance of expression. It was now thoroughly impossible to identify the rage bubbling just beneath the surface. The fear. The hatred. The guilt. All of that was locked away behind the impassive mask he'd erected. There was no way to tell, by looking, just what was going through S'rei's mind. It was a defense he'd perfected during his turns at Benden. Someone who knew him well might realize this meant he was hiding something, but most wouldn't think anything of it. And, even if they did suspect he was concealing his thoughts and emotions for some reason, they wouldn't know what it was he was hiding. It was effective either way.
"Although it's true that I need you by my side, so that I can know which woman said these things, it's also true that, once you point her out, you will no longer be safe. That means you'll need to stay at my side. It's the safest place. And, before you get any ideas, it'll go far better for you if you pick the right side to back in this. I have no qualms in making a candidate's life miserable if she turns out to be a coward." It was probably insulting for him to suggest that this girl would back out now. Anyway, he rather hoped it was, because otherwise he had no respect for her. But S'rei was not about to allow this opportunity to slip through his fingers. His first priority was the protection of his family. As long as the person who had poisoned his mate was at large - that safety was jeopardized.
The Weyrleader nodded toward the entrance to the Main Hall from the flying platform. As they entered the building, a thought occured to him. "You know, you haven't told me your name."

Auryn was glad to be on the ground again. The feel of the solid earth beneath her came as a comfort as she watched the rage receed back into the man that was S'rei. There was no way that those feelings of rage and vengeance were gone. But hidden, stored away behind walls for when the right person opened them again. She turned and looked towards the hall that she had only, it seemed only mere moments ago, run from in search of the Weyrleader and found him on the waterfalls edge. She shivered as she felt his stare penetrate the very walls of their home.
As he started to walk she followed step for step only faultering at the very THOUGHT of her backing down or changing sides. "I am no Jumping Johnny Sir. I understand the danger I have placed myself in. If it keeps the Weyr safe, and your Lady, then it will be worth it."
((sorry short post. I just found out two of my best friends are moving soon, and that more of my friends just got engaged. I feel old... and am going to bed.))

Jumping Johnny? He'd never heard that particular phrase before, and found himself chuckling at how strange it sounded. Jumping Johnny. Why did that give him the mental image of a little tyke, no more than four turns of age, bouncing about wildly from rock to rock as he windmilled his arms and screamed at the top of his lungs? Because you're secretly a lunatic? Or it's probably just a way to release some of that anger. Feeling a little better now? A bit. Though I wouldn't rule out the lunatic theory just yet. He'd sobered almost immediately, but found that the anger that had been boiling was now down to a contained simmer. Yes, he could function like this without declaring war on the nearest person who annoyed him. He could.
It seemed that the candidate didn't care to give him her name. Well, whatever. Her prerogative. If he really wanted to, he could track her down, name or no. S'rei doubted he'd want to, though. Either her information would prove helpful, or it wouldn't, but anything that reminded him of Shmee's miscarriage was not something he went out of his way to come in contact with normally, and this girl was now officially in that category.
"Lead the way," he stated curtly, his hand going to the small of her back to direct her ahead of him. It wasn't really that he was being pushy. This was just the bronzerider's way; he tended to convey a lot through touch, and rarely refrained from touching anyone but complete strangers. "When you see her, I want you to speak to her. Say whatever you want. Comment on the weather, for all I care, but I need a way to know who it is without having you point. All right? Then just keep quiet."

Auryn noticed the strange smile that crept across his face after she had spoken. Not that she had any idea what had been funny about what she had said. oh well. To each their own strange mind. As they wandered down the halls in silence for a while searching she finally turned to S'rei again. "I apologize, I forgot to give you my name earlier. It's Auryn. Guess I was a little overwhelmed earlier and a bit frightened. You know, talking to the Weyrleader and all." The last part of the 'speech' was merely so that the conversation continued to sound normal to anyone who might be lingering as Auryn had.
Finally after about 10 minutes of wandering *dont know how big it is lol* Auryn finally noticed the drudge carrying a couple large pails of water towards the kitchen. Probably to be used to cook a soup for dinner, or to heat a bath for the rest of the kitchen. Either way she was deep in her work and merely looking at the ground before her. Auryn looked at S'rei and then went over to the drudge, "Here, let me help you with that."
"No no, your a candidate. You have plenty of other chore's on your load. You dun need to be helpin ol Tilly with her business. I have to serve the Weyr after all."
The woman sighed heavily and set down the buckets arching her back to stretch.
"Now you run along and I will be a gettin these to the kitchen. Were to have fish soup for dinner t'night."
The old drudge kept mumbling and paid no more attention to Auryn almost as if she wasn't even there anymore. After all the work of a drudge never finished. Tilly knew that as soon as she got these pails of water boiled clean, she would have to get more water to keep the levels high enough to actually cook with.
Auryn just stood by where they had been and looked around for one of the nooks in the wall that held a bench. Finding one a little ways down the hall she settled herself once again, paying close attention to her hands and waiting for S'rei to see and catch up.

Auryn, then. The Weyrleader fell further behind the candidate, deliberately putting space between them so that it likely wouldn't be obvious that they were working together on this. Despite what he'd told her, S'rei had no intention of putting her in danger if he could help it.
As the minutes drew out, he began to wonder if the girl wasn't just leading him on a merry little scavenger hunt. If this turned out to be a prank...Still, he could say at least one good thing had come out of it: he was now seriously thinking about Trenlor and his role at Selenitas. Frankly, he was rather miffed at himself for not considering that angle before. A healer, dragonless, transferred from Benden. Emphasis on transferred. That meant it was accepted by both weyrs as a good idea. And, ironically, not long before Fath's clutch was laid...That thought was almost enough to stop him in his tracks. Oh, he definitely had to have a good long chat with Trenlor, regardless of how this particular scenario played out.
Just about to call off this trek, he heard Auryn's voice up ahead, his eyes narrowing. Ah. Finally. He noted the candidate seat herself not far off. Then this drudge was definitely the one. S'rei fingered the strap crossing his chest restlessly. Plastering on a pleasant smile, he strode up to the drudge, pausing near her. "You look like you've been here long enough to know what's what. Can I ask a favor of you, ma'am?"
And, just as expected from a man who truly didn't expect to be denied anything by a mere drudge, he took her arm and directed her bodily toward the nearest empty room. It wouldn't do to pursue this particular line of questioning out in the open. Nevertheless, he stated cheerfully, for the benefit of anyone else who might be listening, "You see, I've been working up some plans for construction over the winter months, and I'm looking for some other opinions and suggestions." He flashed her his friendliest smile, unrolling the parchment he'd been working on just minutes ago. "So, what do you think?"
While she was distracted, S'rei calmly went to the door and closed it behind them. There. He paused for a moment, shedding the amiable attitude like a common robe. His tone had hardened to stone. "It has come to my attention that you may know something regarding my mate's miscarriage. Is there anything you'd like to tell me?" Though the words themselves were not openly threatening, something in his eyes warned her against attempting to sidestep the question.

The drudge Tilly was surprised to see the Weyrleader appear before her, and even more so when he grabbed her arm and started to ask her about advice.
"Sir, Tilly wouldn't know anything about buildin nothin. I just cook and clean and does my job yes." The pails of water that she had been carrying sloshed around her until she finally just released them spilling water all over the floor. She looked up at S'rei scared that he would reprimand her for such clumsiness but was suddenly in a room with him. When the door shut behind him and the mask of pleasantness washed away Tilly brought her hands to chest level, and they started to wring in nervousness.
How had he found out that she had anything to do with this? Oh it must have been that bratty youngster. Tilly should have known that she couldn't trust her! She would put her on the spit in the kitchen with the dogs if she made it out of this room alive! But for now she was too scared to think about the other girl much more than that. She brought her aged blue eyes up to the Weyrleaders and stuttured some before her words finally evened themselves out,
"Sir. I, I only was doin what I was told. I... I h'h'h'ad no idea that Shmee would miscarry because of it. I meant no harm Sir! I only went to the kitchen to get her tea. And the healer Trenlor was there. He put a white powder in the tea that I had made her. Chamomile and peppermint to ease her cramping. But HE said that she needed the white powder, that it would be good for the babe. I am no healer Sir and I trusted him. I'm sorry..."
Tilly was near in tears and her lower lip trembled. She felt so terrible about what had happened to Shmee and had banished herself to the depth's of the kitchen, sleeping in the cheese closet. Sleeping fitfully and having nightmares that Shmee would blame her. She had not known that the powder was poison.

The Weyrleader was not essentially a cruel man. He did not, however, feel any remorse for reducing this woman to this. She was older than his mother would have been, perhaps even than his grandmother. She'd been around. No, it was not S'rei's way to displace blame. Yet this older drudge? She had put his family in danger by not coming forward, and she was not some young kid, too naive to realize the dangers. Nor did she seem like her age was affecting her mind. That left only one explanation. Most likely out of fear, she had very deliberately withheld information from him that could well have resulted in Shmee suffering another attack. Or Miguel. Or anyone, really, and that was unacceptible. At least he now knew that Trenlor was involved. He had little doubt she was telling the truth. Still, he didn't know for certain that it was Trenlor's addition to the tea that had caused Shmee's miscarriage.
S'rei had more digging to do.
"Woman," he responded, sounding more weary than ought else. "Anyone can be fooled when they have no knowledge of the subject. Had Trenlor given me something for Shmee's tea, I would have given it to her without hesitation. That's not the issue. You had information...and you chose to conceal it. What would prevent him from trying again? I wouldn't even know to suspect him." His eyes found hers unwaveringly. "Understand that I do not blame people for their ignorance, only for what they willfully do. I will be speaking to Marisina. You may stay on at Selenitas, but expect some repercussions."
With that, he rolled up his plans, shouldered the carrying case, and left the room and the drudge who could have meant the death of his weyrmate had this secret been kept much longer. Striding past the alcove that held Auryn, he nodded to her to follow him. Closely. They no longer had any need to conceal the fact that she was with him, and the Weyrleader was of the mind that time was of the essence. He knew from Kali that Trenlor was not showing up at the infirmary for most of his shifts anymore. Where would he be, then? And what was he concocting? Further, how could S'rei set about proving to himself, one way or another, Trenlor's role in Shmee's miscarriage? He still wasn't keen about condemning an innocent man.
Despite the calm manner in which his thoughts flowed, as he rounded the corner and came unexpectedly face-to-face with the very healer who most likely had nearly killed the Weyrwoman, S'rei reacted without thinking. He reared back, his fist cracking into the jaw of the man who was much more strongly built than S'rei. Not that it mattered. An unexpected blow to the jaw from a dragonrider in his prime was likely to knock anyone flat - even as it did Trenlor.
The Weyrleader bent, taking the dragonhealer by the tunic and lifting him with a snarl. It was all he could do to keep himself from beating the man to death. Literally. S'rei took the man and pinned him against the wall, using that as leverage to bring them to face level, Trenlor's feet well above the floor. "You poisoned her, didn't you?" he growled, barely able to speak around the rage that was surging through him. You don't know... If I'm wrong, I'll apologize later, the Weyrleader shot back.

Tilly shuddered at the Weyrleaders words but was glad that he was going to let her stay. This would be the last time that she would act in such a cowerdice way. She had never wanted to bring the Weyrwoman harm and nodded vigorously that it was her fault for not stepping forward sooner. She would await her punishment, knowing that she could never bring their child back. Tilly simply stood still as S'rei left the room.

Auryn was still waiting around the corner patiently when she saw S'rei. The man obviously looked like he had gotten the information that he had wanted. Than she had done well, good. Still many things were going to be up in the air until they could find.... Trenlor. What fortuitous timing. Though she did step back as S'rei halted suddenly and rounded on the man with his fist. A small gasp escaped from Auryn from the shock of the sudden action though she quickly calmed herself, breathing in and out. Justice had to be served, she kept whispering to herself in her head.
(short I know, but there is honestly not much more that she would do)
