History
Asharra was the eldest daughter of a farmer. She grew up in a minor hold Her Benden Hold. Her family where farmers and most of her siblings became farmers as well. A sister was searched. Two brothers joined the Harpers. The youngest known sister became a low class architect. In all she has 11 siblings. She only knows 8.
By the time she was eleven she was apprenticed to a well respected healer at Benden Hold. Her apprenticeship was hard and rather impersonal but she struggled and triumphed and earned her journeyman. The healer didn't move her from apprentice status until she was 19. During that time she had to be careful not to let her temper flare. The men there didn't hesitate to put women in their places.
After becoming a journey woman she stayed with him for two more years and worked with him in the hold until he passed away. Not wanting to be near the one to take his place she left. She was assigned to Crom Hold.
Crom was vastly different than Benden. The people where mostly miners and there was always work for her. She stayed for many years here and started to wonder if she would always be here. She worked hard and sometimes she had to improvise and adapt in order to treat some one effectively. It was during this time that she began writing reports to the Master Healer. She was reassigned to Southern Boll Hold when she was 28 years old. This hold came to be her favorite for its diversity.
During her time there she learned much of the rising tension from the two Weyrs. She was afraid that if things escalated there could be bloodshed. From a healer's perspective the Weyr's turning on each other was devastating. Why should they fight? Why shed blood so needlessly in battle when they could be honored simply for history's sake if nothing else? She questioned the logic of the Dragonriders and grew to scorn them. To her, Dragonriders where becoming bloodthirsty and uncannily ruthless.
She stayed in Southern Boll Hold for many years. The small place had no political strong point and she met many people. She enjoyed working there and the various illnesses and injuries that happened there trained her to be observant and creative in treatment. Occasionally she would send a report to the Master Healer to suggest a new treatment or thoughts for improvement. Time and again her suggestions found their ways into common practice. She and the Master Healer became found of one another through their soon constant letters. Not only did they share medical experiences, they shares memories of family and themselves. This friendly relationship never went into physical intimacy. She does feel that if circumstance ever allowed they would have come together.
Her peaceful stay at Southern Boll Hold was interrupted in her 35th turn as Benden searchers traveled past their boundaries and landed there. They searched and took candidates from families who had no ties to Benden. Families sent their children with smiles. It was in the court yard that Asharra met Elisabeta, her younger sister.
The girl was 27 and had a confrontational attitude. Asharra tried to talk to her but Elisabeta wanted nothing to do with her. In the courtyard, Asharra and her locked eyes and stared at one another. Elisabeta's eyes hardened, silently condemning her older sister for her chosen life. Her green dragon leaped up, a young girl was sitting in front of Elisabeta. The girl was some one Asharra knew. The one girl fond of painting. She would have made a beautiful artist one day had she not been taken into the riders custody. Asharra regretted how cold her sister was.
Asharra stayed at the hold to tend to some scrapes that occurred during the search. It wasn't long before she received authorization to return to the Healer Hall. It was a great relief to return there.
She stayed at the hall for three years for study and contemplation. By this time many young women had married and where with child. Yet for her there where few that had stirred her emotions to such level. Such people where never in a position to return her feelings. She and the Master Healer spent more and more time together. They discussed new methods of decreasing infection and designs for improving on various medical items common to the field. Their friendship was such that she could read from his personal collection of scrolls and books. Occasionally a rumor of their affection would go around and run its course. No one really knew how true those rumors where even if the two people never joined.
During a small outbreak of infection the Master Healer himself helped hall and hold treat the sick and elderly. During the months of treatment something went wrong inside him. He grew faint and sickly with out known cause and although Asharra and others tried to help him he passed on at age 55. It was a very sad and lonely time for Asharra.
The new Master Healer was a man of 48 years and well respected by his colleges. A few months after the old master healer's death he had Asharra go through the tests to become a Master. She succeeded and returned to her post at Southern Boll although others tried to encourage her elsewhere.
She continued study but as years went on she became more withdrawn. By the time she was forty she gave up trying to find some one to love. There just wasn't a special some one where she was. There where rumors of unrequited love but they where hushed and not spoken often.
When she was 54 Benden came to Southern Boll Hold but this time Benden and Fort collided in the skies above. Witnessing this senseless waste of life made her more determined to leave it. She had just finished training two apprentices to journeyman status. In the same turn she took a chance to travel by boat to the southern continent. By this time the Master Healer was curious himself and wanted her to send reports often. For her the chance to go south was a chance to see these places on her own. She arrived in Light Tower hold and, finding the place in terrible shape, set up a small clinic there.
Money to run the place was rather hard to come by. She used up her savings in marks to keep the place running. At first she tried a small garden for keep her herbs stocked but people could never leave it alone. Any marks she earned went back into the clinic to keep providing help to people. It was the first time she hadn't been welcomed with open arms at a hold. She had never had to open a clinic before since the holds usually had places for healers, especially master healers. This place didn't trust her plus, some one else was 'head healer" inside the hold and convinced the Holders that she was not worth the rank her knots proclaimed. It was hard at first to keep the clinic but soon people realized her worth and her little clinic no longer struggled. Eventually she could keep a small garden there with out people destroying it.
There she took the time to train 3 more youngsters up to their journeyman status. She sent reports often as requested but after the first 2 replies she stopped receiving a response. Her last letter from the Master Healer suggested she try going to Selenitas Hold and seeing if it was like Light Tower. She was 64 years old when she turned the clinic over to her students, who where already helping others, and traveled to Selenitas Hold. To her surprise, she found the place lively and refreshing. It was almost like being back at Southern Boll except no ocean. She kept a skeptical perspective though. Selenitas Weyr was unknown to her and she knew not if they were like the others. She found a place to live in the hold and started helping people.
