Name: M'ta (formerly Mutashamin/Mutasim)
Age: 29 turns
Birth Month: October of 2993
Gender: Male
Sexual Orientation: Pansexual
Rank: Weyrlingmaster
Weyrmate: Greenrider Ruliana (26)
Mother: Jazmina (46)
Father: Breeder Mutajheers (53)
Siblings: Bluerider Jazheera (27), Tajmin (21), Ezram (20), Ramina (18)
Children (by adoption): Riaren (10), Terilyn (10)
UPDATED: May 27 2012
Physical Appearance: M'ta is a small man. Though quite muscular, he stands at a diminutive 5'5". He is broad of shoulder and narrow of hip, olive-skinned with dark hair that he keeps shorter than the average male dragonrider it seems. Scars prominently cover chest and back from the fights he's been in. His dark eyes tend to be very communicative. Anger, defiance, sympathy, gentleness...they all spring easily to his gaze. His person is also characterized by the weapons he carries. Five blades (three hidden and two worn openly) go with him outside his weyr. Beyond Selenitas or in training belts of throwing knives are strapped about his chest. Apart from that, he often wears the necklace of strung shell shards from Behruth's egg and a joining ring.
Personality: Passionate. This single word defines M'ta to the utmost. He is an emotional creature, with very clear definitions of morality. It sounds a little ridiculous really. The whole protect the weak from the strong chivalry bit. But the brownrider truly will put his life on the line and make every sacrifice necessary to protect those he cares about, those duty demands, and those who can't protect themselves. No matter how much he gripes or complains, M'ta can always be relied on when things get tight. His set of values also compels him not to lie. The man is doubly fierce in protecting his family. It takes only a moment of seeing him with one of his loved ones - Terilyn, Riaren, Ruliana, it doesn't matter - to see how softhearted he truly is.
That said, most people know not to mess with M'ta. The man is exceedingly paranoid. Not quite jumpy enough to put a blade between your ribs if you startle him anymore, but a misunderstanding not resolved within seconds can still be fatal. Particularly large or aggressive men (especially those he doesn't know) seem to put the man more on edge than is normal for the average guy. The brownrider is quickwitted in the way most survivors are. Not booksmart (he doesn't like people to know he's even literate most of the time) he knows how to survive in almost any conditions. Being in tune with his own emotions helps him understand other people much easier. It's usually a bad idea to anger him...all those unvoiced observations like to come out.
History:
The Plains of Telgar (2993-2999)
The boy was his father's pride and his mother's delight. Mutashamin was the firstborn of minor runner breeder Mutajheers and his new wife, Jazmina. And, just over a turn later, Jazheera followed. The young couple doted on their children and groomed them as the Telgar often do...Mutashamin to follow his father and Jazheera to become the girl all young men sought after. Mutashamin and Jazheera were close from the outset, suffering few sibling squabbles and doing most everything together. Until Mutashamin's sixth turn of life. The child was stolen in a raid, eventually taken out of Fort territory and into the heart of corruption...Bitra Hold.
The Streets of Bitra (2999-3001)
By the time the slavers got to Bitra Hold, they'd acquired a far more lucrative catch than a willful six-turn-old from Telgar, and the men turned him loose on the streets. Poverty had already made the environs of the Hold outside the inner walls a dangerous place. Food was scarce. Children were sold or abandoned. Gangs of children banded together for a chance at survival, fighting over scraps offered to them by the charitable and stealing what they could not get otherwise. Mutashamin ended up in one of these, the other children finding his name too difficult and calling him Mutasim. He began to forget his family, putting that time out of his mind. It was the only way to push aside despair and live.
The Den (3001-3003)
To the rest of the children he ran with, Mutasim became known as Muta. He was big for his age amongst the street children. Big, fierce, and always willing to keep his den safe from other gangs of children roaming the streets. Much like a feral dog - and nearly as dangerous as one - the child learned to trust no one but 'family'. To build respect among the other dens through fear to keep them at a distance. To never make a threat he didn't or wouldn't follow through on. To show no weakness. Those who blustered loudest, showed no sign of doubt, were not messed with. Muta became what he pretended. The streets transformed him as they transform all children who live there long enough.
Martial Law (3003-3007)
After four turns on the streets of Bitra, things came to a head. Poverty was so high among the common population that the dens of orphans were becoming a problem, not to mention rioting amongst the populace. Lordholder Raluran issued martial law, instating a curfew, and further ordered to round up the parentless ruffians and sell them to the mines. Muta's den went underground as a result, stealing for survival. When their current den leader died, Muta took over at age 11. Shitaki was his second. Under his lead, the den robbed even the wealthy that Raluran favored, and soon the Lordholder began offering things to any child or person who had information on the den. Still, it took them three turns to finally catch the band of children. They were strung up in the streets, an example to all.
Gambling House (3007-3009)
All were killed, anyway, but Mutasim and Shitaki. Young teenagers fetched a pretty price in certain...venues. The Lordholder could be a vindictive man, and he would see all the monies robbed from him repaid in full. Shitaki could not bear the life in the gambling house. After two turns, even Muta's whispered assurances that he'd find a way free couldn't stay her; she jumped from the window. And the boy snapped. When next his handlers came to prepare them for customers, the sixteen-turn-old turned on them. He walked from the gambling house naked and covered in blood, and no one thought to stop him. There was only one thing on his mind: killing the Lordholder for the slaying of his family.
Selenitas Candidate (3009-3011)
It was pure accident. In an effort to avoid being caught, Mutasim snuck into a line of those being Searched...and was Searched himself. He might have refused if the guards weren't so close. Still thinking this was just a Benden Searchrider, he figured he'd steal back to Bitra at the first opportunity. But the weyr he ended up at was much different than Benden. In this strange world where there was always enough food and people didn't know how to fight - or not to trust one another - Mutasim struggled to fit in. Two turns and four hatchings passed, the candidate left Standing every time. During that time, he did his best not to develop attachments that would only tear him apart later. But no matter how he hardened his heart and kept his distance, some still managed to work their way in. Meira. Savitri. Z'hin. Others.
Selenitas Dragonrider (3011-3015)
Behruth Impressed to M'ta just before he turned eighteen. His beloved Checkbrother Impressed to R'wign, and the two pairs became roommates. Everything changed. M'ta began developing more and more attachments, many through his loving brown. The Benden Siege saw him defending the younger weyrlings as if they were his own den. He graduated from weyrlinghood and joined Ka'rys' wing, a wing dedicated to evening the odds should the north bring their war south to Selenitas. The brownrider even fell in love with his old roommate, R'wign. They adopted Teri. Got joined in a hold. Jazheera crossed the ocean to find her longlost brother and Impressed a blue of her own. The traits warped by Bitra resurfaced in M'ta, and everything began looking up.
Wasteland Takeover (3015-3016)
So, naturally, they couldn't stay that way. Selenitas was taken over by Benden defectors. M'ta stayed behind to make sure his wing got out - and mostly because he refused to leave without R'wign and their daughter. When the invaders started killing off deformed hatchlings at Millieth's next hatchling, Behruth intervened to save the life of Lketh. His wings never fully healed from the reprisal. Love for the brownpair, though, protected them, and they were given the position of Weyrlingmaster since 'Ruth could not fly a wing. Then R'wign died, taking Checkoth and PMS with him. The brownpair had only just recovered from this terrible blow when they received word that Meira, M'ta's old friend and the mother of R'wign's son, had died, too.
Slippery Slope 3016-3018
The first three turns of his life after R'wign's death were hard on all Selenitans, but they almost broke M'ta. Behruth's grief joined with his would have claimed their lives if not for Terilyn, and even then the Weyrlingmaster turned to Z'ves to take his mind off his deeper pain...and survive. Betrayals, murders, smuggling and treachery. He hadn't been involved in this many immoral acts since Bitra. The despair he struggled so hard against was relieved momentarily with the addition of Riaren to his small family and contact with many friends he'd lost to the takeover after the earthquake landed them all in Burimyu. It wasn't enough. His friends had their own lives, and M'ta was very much alone with his grief and his children...he began exhibiting extreme symptoms of various sleeping disorders and was forced to give up his children for their own safety. Though E'rro was his best friend, it didn't ease the pain much, and M'ta continued to struggle with the all-consuming loneliness almost completely on his own.
Rebirth - 3018-3023
It was a gradual thing, as most such things are with M'ta. His sister-in-law, who had always spent a good amount of time with his sister Jazheera, started coming around more and more often. Ruliana's quiet temprament and a growing fondness between them was something of a salve, enough so that when E'rro went north to participate in the war, M'ta could take care of his children again without fearing for their safety. He was only too willing to agree to having her move in with him when it became clear the Weyrs would be divided, and the fondness grew into something deeper. In 3021, M'ta made it clear that he wanted her as his weyrmate...in every sense. Riaren and Terilyn are his delight...even if at times Riaren evokes a bittersweet longing in him for R'wign, and he sometimes has to distance himself for a minute or two to get the emotions under control. His happiness is undeniable, though.
Dragon: Behruth
Color: Brown
Age: 11 turns
Appearance: Small in size for a brown, Behruth is probably only the size of a very large blue, and even as a hatchling, he is on the more diminutive side. His frame is proportionate to his size as well, including his wings which are usually very carefully and neatly settled along his body when not in use. He is neither wherry-necked nor odd in the tail or barrel. He just simply is an average specimen as far as body shape goes, barring his smaller size for his color.
His coloring, however, makes up for his lack of stature. His hide is a deep rich mahogany in color, and he looks almost like a wooden statue in motion. When properly bathed and oiled, he will probably almost gleam in the proper amount of sunlight. It will be obvious to see when he is ill, though, for his coloring will be noticeably less brilliant. His will have to make sure to take good care of him to keep him from looking off color, or people may comment.
His behavior and carriage portray an ease of character that is typical of the stereotypic brown. Though he is small in size and rich in color, he does not seem to act or move in a way that implies arrogance or the need to prove himself. His posture is nearly always that of a very relaxed dragon, at ease with the world in general, with wings tucked, neck arched, eyes whirling very calmly. His posture and small frame hide a very definitive layer of lean muscle that cover his body. His movements set the muscles beneath his gleaming hide to rippling, giving him a curious sort of look as he meanders along.
Personality: Though seemingly a bit neurotic at times, Behruth is a very easygoing sort of dragon. Cheerful, optimistic, and very social, this brown loves nothing more than to be resting and chatting calmly in the presence of another dragon. He likes humans, dragons, and all sorts of draconic and non-draconic pets. Really, there is very little that bothers this dragon other than blatant stupidity or senseless violence. Even the most quarrelsome of dragons will have trouble getting a rise out of this very easygoing creature. He tends to defuse situations simply by staying calm in the face of much chaos, and other dragons and even people tend to flock to him as a result. He has a sort of easygoing charisma that attracts and calms others, and frightened or insecure weyrlings will probably follow him around as a human child would follow an adored older sibling. He is a reassuring and calming sort of presence and is frequently cheering up even the most depressed of followers.
Unfortunately, Behruth has a very odd sort of quirk, which is his tendency to… hoard. Even as a young creature, he shows the tendencies of being a packrat of the most odd items. Shiny rocks, tree branches, and eggshells are probably the things he will focus on since they are inanimate, varied, and fun to look over. As easygoing as he is about all things, Behruth will be very possessive over his hoard, which he will likely stash in a very secret place known only to himself and possibly to His. Of course, his liking of eggshells means he might accidentally snag an actual egg by accident, so His is well-advised to make sure that none of the eggs hatch into anything dangerous. Wherries make terrible, terrible pets.
Still, for all that he is possessive over his secret hoard, Behruth still is possessing of a good sense of humor. He will fuss over His or anyone else trying to take one of his little prizes, but he is not past resorting to a tug-of-war game with his bonded over a certain object. His trinkets can also become gifts to others if he is attempting to woo a female or make a good friend. It is understandably quite hilarious to watch such a handsome dragon offer a dried tree branch to another dragon as though it were a great prize, but he is very anxious about his gifts being received well. Those who know him best are advised to humor him on this. He is social enough that he greatly enjoys chasing any female that should Rise, gold or green. His chances with golds are low, but he tries nonetheless, probably much to His’ chagrin.
Candlelight Brown
Name- Sneak
Species- Firelizard
Color- Brown (#943600)
Age- 9
Looks to- M’ta
Appearance- This brown is fairly well off in size for a firelizard of his color, though he’s got nothing on bronzes or the larger browns. He’s just fairly average, and his build even more so; the casual onlooker would be hard-pressed to tell that he was sired by a Salamandyr. But that has left its telltale marks nonetheless, in a neck just a tad shorter than is normal. It’s not noticeable by any means – it just looks a little off. His body is rounded, lacking the distinctive shoulders-sides-hindquarters hills and valleys and instead looking more like a continuous sausage. His wings are long, but very slender, as if the membrane that spans them had to be stretched to make it fit, ending, instead of on his tail, above his hind legs. Said legs, as well as forelegs, happen to be a good deal longer and more balanced than a firelizard’s ought, providing an easy, graceful gait even on the ground. His tail, however, is very short; it looks quite comical, and because of his, changing direction in flight will prove to be fairly difficult. His rudder has, after all, been stolen!
In color, this firelizard is actually quite attractive. His hide is a fairly bright shade of russet – a reddish brown dark enough to seem elegant and light enough to be able to look almost like flame, especially when the light manages to shine across it. Very vibrant, this brown certainly is, and he’s very attractive in terms of such – orange stripes circle his entire body, jagged like a Terran tiger’s, the deep, burnt orange transparent enough to melt flawlessly into the brighter russet. Splashes of a very yellow-brown, too, run down the length of his back in one long, relatively straight line of erratically shaped dots and splotches, starting at the tip of his muzzle. The largest one is located directly over his left eye, giving him an eye-patch, while the smallest is all but a freckle on the tip of his nose. The spots continue their march down his rump and eventually peter out about halfway down his tail: Let there be no mistake – this brown lives up to his egg’s name by dressing in shades of fire.
Personality- Nobody’s quite sure when or why this firelizard’s egg was rapped over the top, but it most certainly must have been – that’s the only way to explain his behavior. Yes, he’s very much aware that he’s a brown firelizard, and to most he’ll seem very dignified and polite – very much the “ideal” pet: Quiet, intelligent, pleasant, and obedient without being overly affectionate or distant. Generally speaking, he’ll chirrup and croon only what is necessary and little more than that – in greeting, acknowledgment, farewell, or agreement, because he is, after all, a very agreeable firelizard. He does, though, have a tendency of just zoning out and paying attention only enough to nod or croon at the appropriate times, but don’t ask him what you just said; he won’t have a clue. He’s just not interested in anyone enough to actually listen to them, and therefore resigns himself to never becoming interested in anyone. Fortunately for His, his person is regarded with the highest respect and he’s very obedient to any requests or wishes…with exceptions.
This brown is fascinated by Salamandyrs. Of any size, age, color, or conceivable shape, this firelizard simply obsesses over them and likes to watch them. They’re amazing and so different that he just can’t help but get totally distracted by them – but his style is more of a ‘silent observer’. He’ll almost never actually go up to a Salamandyr, and will often act cold and brusque should any approach him while inwardly being completely, absolutely engrossed in them. This firelizard is certainly intelligent enough to be aware that most of his species don’t like Salamandyrs, and that he shouldn’t, but he does anyway – privately. And he’s very good at keeping it a secret, too. Tempting though it is, he’ll almost never Chase a Salamandyr unless he has a decent excuse (i.e. another flit he knows is Chasing, or His is fond of the Salamandyr’s Bonded) and prefers to drift aimlessly after those of his own kind…dull and uninteresting as they are. Sigh. Life’s harsh, isn’t it?
Banana Pudding Blue
Name: Devotion (Devon)
Age: 6
Born: June 3016
Color: Base 008080 Stripes AEEEEE
Species: Mandyr
Looks to: M’ta
Physical Appearance:
This blue mandyr is larger than average. In fact he will measure nose to tail tip about the same size as your average brown mandyr would. In musculature he takes after a brown too. He is by no means your typical light weight blue in build. A large, and maybe just a just a tad wide, frame is packed with decent muscle even his tail is slightly thick. Upon hatching this muscle is padded with a thin layer of fat, not too much but not too little. The male may be the ideal weight now but he is extremely prone to gain weight if not watched very carefully. Especially because he has a great love for food. Something no doubt inherited from his dam. His will have to make sure he is kept decently active to keep the weight to a manageable level. Fortunately this shouldn’t be too hard normally. His wings are large and very strong easily capable of holding him aloft in limited flight. He will never be able to fly like a firelizard but he can surely use his wings well enough. Behind his rather square shaped head are the same bony protrusions his mother and her offspring are known for. His particular spines are a dark black and tapered to wicked points. Thankfully they are mostly kept laid back in a relaxed position. Unless of course they are in use.
If this blue’s build makes you question his true color his hide banishes any notions of him being brown. The base color of his hide is a quite pretty shade of teal. The color seeming to have an almost metallic quality in bright lighting. The color lightens slightly on his wing membranes but other than that it is fairly uniform. Like most mandyrs he sports a couple markings that make him unique. One large splotch of pale turquoise covers his left eye and twin racing stripes of the same shade run down his back to his tail. Like the rest of his siblings his tail also has ‘raccoon’ bands running from the base to the tip in the same pale turquoise color that makes up the stripes lining his back.
Personality:
This male seems to have been born to play. In fact he’s almost puppyish in the way he chooses to act about eighty percent of the time. Go, go, go till he drops. When he is a little thing this might not be much of a problem because he’ll tire quickly, but once he gains age and stamina that will be a different story. The mandyr is incredible loyal. Loyal to his bonded, their family, and any friends he might happen to acquire. He’s also very sweet but don’t let his seemingly completely gentle personality fool you. When his bonded or family is threatened he becomes very aggressive. To the point of biting and even impaling with the spines he was born with. He’s also extremely intelligent and knows just where to strike and with deadly precision too. The eyes are one of his favorite targets. He’s also very verbose and fond of speaking, seemingly for absolutely no good reason other than he can. He’ll acquire a rather extensive vocabulary pretty quickly in fact but his pronunciation and grammar will always remain quite terrible. That’s okay though he doesn’t mind one bit.
He’s quite set in his ways really. To the point where. When this mandyr makes a decision he is impossible to reason with otherwise. Whether it be what he wants to eat or whether or not he likes a person, his mind rarely changes. Not even if you reason with him for nights on end. There is however one thing that his bonded might have a tiny bit of success on occasion bribing him with. Food. He seems to have inherited his mother’s love of food and the only thing he loves possibly as much as playing is eating. To other mandyrs, dragons, whers, and even firelizards he is polite and he is always willing to make a new friend or two. He doesn’t usually pay much attention to non draconics unless they show interest in him first. Humans are regarded with curiosity but unless they mean something to his he isn’t too keen on interacting with them all that much. In manners of running he is normally primarily uninterested. Oh he’ll chase the occasional mandyr or flit but only if he sees her as special enough. Even if he succeeds in catching her however he seems less than interested in anything besides a friendship. Most likely because she’ll cut into his play time.
