I just don't know where I am.
That was potentially problematic, Rawign decided as he looked around him. It had been less than a sevenday since he came to Selenitas, and he was still very lost. He'd decided to wake up early in hopes of exploring the Weyr and getting to know the layout better; maybe then he would be able to lurk somewhere other than the candidate barracks without getting confused. His intention was to wander around, maybe find some place nice to spend his free time, and then make his way back to the barracks before chores and lessons. That hadn't worked out so well, though, because he found himself completely lost, staring up at a large tree that vaguely resembled a tower. He was certain that he'd come that way, except the pathway he'd taken didn't have any trees like that and there was no sign of the boats. In other words, he was most efficiently lost, despite his efforts to remember where he was going. He might have done better to ask someone to help him, but pride would have prevented that. Rawign was most definitely on the proud side, probably to his own detriment much of the time.
His well-formed plan (formed as he lay trying to fall asleep unsuccessfully and thus was not half as well-formed as Rawign would have liked to believe) had completely backfired in his face. Rather than gain a better understanding of Selenitas Weyr's layout without the aid of others (perhaps quite a lofty goal), Rawign had instead managed to find himself... wherever he was. And there was no one around, which struck him as unusual given that the Weyr was usually at least decently crowded. Needless to say, he was at a total loss. How much time had passed since he left, he had no idea, and he got the distinct impression that no one would come looking for him since he had no real friends. Which, basically, meant that he was likely going to end up wandering around the Weyr until he found someone or until he found something he recognized. He normally had a very good memory, but somehow he suspected he would more likely be found by a disgruntled drudge than find his own way. Pessimism was a strong point of his.
"Beggar," Rawign hissed under his breath as he looked over his shoulder. When he'd left the candidate barracks, the blue firelizard was gliding behind him contentedly, having relaxed since the aftermath of Aslath's (and Fairamay's) flight; his ego was successfully salved, and he was happy to spend his time with his humanpet. But somewhere along the way, it was apparent that Beggar found something considerably more interesting than Rawign's explorations and thus had disappeared between - without any warning to the dark-haired candidate. Imagine Rawign's surprise when he turned and Beggar wasn't there? His eyes were roughly the size of the mouth of a mug of klah as he spun around and literally flailed in desperation. If he had realized from the start he was alone, he would have started backtracking immediately. He was nervous enough in a strange place with no human friends, but with Beggar gone he felt completely, utterly alone. He knew the firelizard would return, but that didn't help him when he was lost and actually more than a little afraid. The wars of the north had stained his opinion of Weyrs to some degree; he found it increasingly hard to feel safe at Selenitas. "Oh, yes, leave me to be completely lost on my own! That's absolutely grand! Thank you, Beggar!"
Great! Just great! Stilling his arms, Rawign brought one hand up to his face and rubbed his eyelids with the pads of his thumb and middle finger. A fresh wave of embarassment and nausea flooded up through his stomach. Fear was not an emotion he was accustomed to and he honestly did not know how to react. He started forward blindly (for his eyes were closed as he massage them), talking to himself. No one was around, so who could hear him? "First I get sent here without knowing anyone, and then my firelizard abandons me, on top of which I don't know where I'm going and I really think that candidates should be given maps upon arrival just to avoid uncomfortable circumstances such as getting lost.. Sort of like I am now... And I'm probably missing lessons, not to mention chores, I'm going to be in so much trouble..."
[ Hope I put this in the right place.. ]
