Wellllll, this was awkward.
The newly introduced Osnat had run off to the table where the eggs were. Hey! August swiveled on his heels to watch where she ran off to. There were two golds on the table. His mind took a second to start working. That could only mean that a gold salamandyr had hatched from one of the eggs. And watching the thing scurry up the girl's arm, he realized that Osnat had impressed it. Hm. " Isn't that something?" He had never imagined himself impressing a gold salamandyr. Hell, he hadn't imagined himself impressing anything. August was the type of guy who lived life on the fly. He didn't like to think about the future too much, mostly because it usually meant thinking past waking up.
Now, anyone reading this would think August was an idiot. That couldn't be father from the truth. He had always been an extremely intelligent kid, he just was never keen on applying himself and thinking past his own laziness, and he was very, very lazy. This doesn't mean he can't or won't work, it just means he lacks the motivation to really do much...like notice a salamandyr hatching in the middle of the dining hall...or an earthquake even.
Watching Osnat and her new pet for a moment longer, the boy turned back to the curly haired weyrling, watching her with a slightly tilted head. She hadn't introduced herself. He wondered if it had something to do with her shyness. " So, what's your name?" He didn't really know anyone in the weyr besides his sister and Serring, so he thought that it would never hurt to get to know more people, especially this greenweyrling, judging by her knots. She seemed kinda flighty, like she would run away at any second. Despite his obliviousness, Gus kinda hoped she didn't. He kinda wanted someone else to talk to sometimes...Sydney was always busy with her healing.

It did not occur to Qaena that she had a perfect chance to slip away when Osnat impressed. No, that would have been quite rude...though she wasn't entirely sure she owed it to anyone to stick around either. Shifting uncomfortably, the greenweyrling realized that she hadn't given her name before Osnat had run off. That definitely qualified as rude, right? She watched after the other girl with an almost pained expression. She didn't exactly want to talk to her (not that she hated the idea of talking to someone, either) but she didn't want to leave a bad impression.
Qaena jumped slightly when August turned back to her to ask for her name. Right. She hadn't told him her name yet either. She swallowed past the nervous lump in her throat and said, quietly, "I-I'm Qaena." Hey! Hey Nana~! Don't forget to introduce me! "Oh." The weyrling hastily added, "And Khiraeth. My Khiraeth is a dragon...ah, no, wait! Well, she is a dragon but...My dragon's name is Khiraeth." Finally all sorted out, Qaena dipped her head to hide a bit behind the natural curtain that was her hair.
She sounded so silly! Surely he thought something ill of her! She fidgeted a little, shifting her weight from one foot to the other. She wasn't particularly good with strangers or with conversations. The only one she really talked to was Khiraeth and well...that was her dragon. She had to talk to her dragon - there was no way out of the bond short of Khiraeth dying and Qaena most definitely did not want her only friend to die.

Trying to walk back to the group with a mandyr in hand was a little awkward. Doubly awkward when said creature had her head stuck in the husk of a shell as she slurped up what she could of it's innards. The feeling of fulfillment that inched through the gold's body was beginning to seep into her's as well, and so despite the queer sight she made, Osnat couldn't help but smile as she stepped into reclaim her previously abandoned spot. This didn't make Leviathan the happiest camper in the world, but as the stickiness of the egg's nourishment began to settle in her stomach, the queen became increasingly too sleepy to even bother with these simple peasants all around her. Do not disturb sleep slavethings. Warning you heed! were her parting words before she pulled back and shimmied up Osnat's arm to rest on her shoulder.
Flinging the shell shards left in her hand towards the floor - someone was going to pick that up right? - she then waved at Qaena and Gus explaining, "Sorry bout that..." apologies were not her expertise though so she sort of nodded her head before plowing ahead with whatever it was that she felt like saying. Picking up on the weyrling's words the candidate blurted out, "Oh so you've a dragon? That pretty sweet, well I mean... I guess it is?" She personally didn't care either way. She only agreed to search under the premise that it was a key to getting her out of drudgery at Big Bay. It wasn't until just now that she began to realize how strange and nearly wonderful to have something stuck to your brain.
Even if that something was a deviously evil gold mandyr. Whatever the significance of that was... she still wasn't sure why everyone seemed so enamored with the shiny thing. It wasn't like dragons, she didn't see any inherent perks in Impressing one of these over another... No. Leviathan best. No sweetness in dragons, me better than all, she was sure to interrupt her slumber for just long enough to blurt that out before closing her eyes once more. Osnat nodded her head awkwardly, "Riiiight... so, do either of ya know if there are like mute buttons on these things? Good to know that she is living up to her name. Levi here is a real monster..." the girl then shrugged and twisted her lips in an expression of loss.

Sydney had heard about the hatching on accident as she was on her way to the dining hall for a break. She had been in the infirmary all morning helping with the supply lists. It was a little depressing to see how much they needed. Hopefully now with the weyrs together the holds could starts tithing properly again. That would be really nice. Any thoughts of supplies and lists though had promptly fled her brain when she had learned about the Salamandyrs and the woman had all but ran to the dining hall. Only to see that they were all now gone. Well drat. So much for that. Whoever had made up the expression better late then never had obviously never been to a hatching. They tended to go like lightning from what she had gathered so far.
Casting her eyes about the room, and trying to figure out just who had acquired one of the weirdly unique creatures and who hadn’t, she paused when she noticed August. Who seemed to be surrounded by girls? Well didn’t that just beat all? Moving through the crowd to the small group Sydney was just in time to hear the little gold speak. Blinking she leaned forward her hand going to grip her brother’s arm in the same moment. A short., “Hey Gus.” was offered her taller sibling before she gave a smile to the other girls. “Hey there. I’m Sydney.” She offered in explanation before she pointed to the gold Leviathan and blurted. “Hey she’s pretty.” Shrugging in reaction to Osnat’s question she then continued. “To be honest I don’t think they do. There are some in the infirmary almost all the time and they all have big mouths.” If she was being rude by just injecting herself into the conversation Sydney didn’t notice. In fact that was pretty much vintage Syd. Bulldoze in and make your points heard no matter if they were wanted or not. She didn’t have the eloquence of her brother in social situations. Not at all.
