Darkness... That was all the young rider could see as she drifted in the turbulent sea of unconsciousness that she had slipped into. A few hours had passed since her arrival at Selenitas, and in those hours she slept in the silence that the infirmary offered to it inhabitants. And while the patient slept the healers had been taking care of her injuries without her notice. Moving ever so slightly, Kaegan began to wake as the world shifted into a new spectrum. Eyes fluttering open, the blacks and whites stood out sharply before the colors slowly filtered into her vision.
"Erm.... gaa."
Patiently the golden Queen waited for her mine to rouse from the sleep that she had fallen into, staying as close as she could to Kaegan as she possibly could. Watching the healer's and her mine with diligence, Millieth yawned silently to herself.

Kalierre sat quietly near the cot in which Kaegan slept. She'd offered to stay with the queenrider, at least for the nonce. The healers were more than ready to accept. Even here, most had heard of the young Benden dragonhealer, a woman of some repute who seemed to have a gift for healing the spirit as well as the body. She was actually rather surprised that this was so. The young woman had never considered herself anything but a hard-working journeyman.
She was on her feet when the girl stirred, keenly aware of the queen that waited a short distance away, though out of sight. Kneeling beside her, and quickly assuring that the sling which immobilized the girl's arm was securely in place, Kalierre brushed back her hair with a feather touch, her voice coming soft and warm. "How do you feel, miss? A bit groggy?" The painkiller shouldn't wear off for another candlemark or so. Though what had really alarmed the healer was the strange fever Kaegan had fought through the night, a fever that seemed to have nothing to do with her untimely tumble upon arriving at Selenitas. It seemed to have faded in the wee hours of the morning. Still, Kali would have liked to know its cause.
She moved to help the girl sit up against the pillows, casting a glance at one of the apprentices that lingered near the doorway. Kalierre nodded sharply at him. He turned to complete the instructions she'd given him earlier that morning.

Shifting slightly again, Kaegan felt a soothing touch brush back her hair, cool fingers against her warm forehead. Still feeling a bit drugged from the deep sleep and the painkillers, the Queenrider began to speak to Healer Kaliere.
"Mnnm. Mother I'm fine... no. No... its okay."
Back before her time at Benden, back before the terrible happenings that taken place, Kaegan had had a loving home and a considerably large family. Growing up in a minor hold near the forest, the young woman had made many friends and adopted family. But after arriving at Benden, she was no longer allowed to contact her family and friends, she wasn't able to tell them about her life or ask for help. Being closest to her mother, Kaegan nearly died when she wasn't allowed to speak with her mother, her best friend. And in this drugged state, those happy memories came back, even if they were only for a fleeting second.
Grunting slightly, Millieth yawned before trying to swing her head closer to Kaegan as she sensed her starting to wake from the fever sleep. A small, yet soothing rumble was issued by the yearling Queen as her mine spoke strangely to the healer.

The girl's murmured words were answer enough. Definitely groggy. Though, by the sound of it, Kaegan didn't seem in much pain. That was good. Kalierre would tell her more about what she needed to do to care for herself when the goldrider was lucid. Instead, she simply continued to smooth back the girl's hair, hoping the touch would help to soothe. The apprentice came back with a heavily watered down broth, laced with spices that were Kali's own recipe. She wouldn't exactly call it medicine per se - but it did seem to make her patients sharper, and generally accelerated the healing process.
"Shush, child." There was nothing ungentle about the healer as she supported Kaegan's back, nodding a thank you to the lad before he set the bowl down at a nearby stand and retreated. "You must drink a little, and then try to eat. Understand?" The woman held a small cup to the girl's lips and waited for her to drink. It was a thin broth, unlikely to cool before Kaegan was ready to swallow a few bites. And, truly, it was unlikely that the goldrider would be able to eat more than that, anyway.
The healer gently wiped the sweat from the girl's face with a damp cloth, before urging her to take a few more sips of the cool water.

Choking slightly as the broth dribbled down the wrong pipe, Kaegan sat up and coughed into her knees before being able to breath well once again. The visions of the strange dreams faded slowly from her mind as the pain killers' effects started to lessen as the hour progressed. Closing her eyes with her head still burred in her knees, the Goldrider desperately tried to cling onto the feelings she had resurrected by dreaming of her mother. Whipping the sleep from her eyes, Kaegan groaned slightly as she felt the sling that held her arm in place.
"Fah..."

Kalierre did not constantly stay by the goldrider's side. Sometimes she nursed Kaegan, but more often one of the apprentices saw to it that the girl was responding favorably. The dragonhealer - how could there be so few here, with so little experience, who knew how to tend to dragons? - found herself treating the mild burns and ailments that the fighting dragons had sustained as they trained for Threadfall. How long now, until they would be called to the skies for real? It was a sobering thought.
"Journeywoman." Her gaze fell on an apprentice. "The goldrider is conscious."
With a quiet nod, she proceeded back into the girl's room, eyes narrowing as Kaegan tested the range of her slinged arm. Then she finally was coming about. It was probably more a matter of the painkillers wearing off, but as long as it served to keep Kaegan lucid rather than distracted her, Kalierre thought it best to allow the painkillers to continue to ebb.
She walked up to the goldrider, an ironic smile tugging at her lips. "You managed to fracture that arm after all, though higher than I first thought, which means you should have full mobility after it heals. Don't take it out of the sling." Coming to perch on the cot beside her, she looked directly into the girl's eyes. "Tell me how you feel. In detail."

Responding almost monotonously, as if she had been trained to respond to questions that were directed at her, Kaegan cautiously shifted the strap of the sling slightly so it wasn't cutting into her neck.
"It throbs... like someone is squeezing and releasing the top of my arm. My head also hurts, but only slightly and I'm also quite... well, um... hungry."
Folding her legs under the sheets of the infirmary cot, the young Goldrider tried to arouse the fact she was finally at Selenitas and not Benden. Carefully reaching out with her mind, Kaegan sought out her dragon.
/Millieth?/
Happily raising her head from the largest ledge, upon which she had settled her massive form, the young Queen looked down and replied to her Mine.
/I am here Mine. It is good that you are awake... but I am hungry and must eat... you are well enough for me to leave for a while? Or will I have to stay and babysit a bit more?/
Sighing slightly to herself as Millieth began to show the startings of her more selfish side as the fear of loosing her Mine vanished.
/Yes you can go... I'll be fine./
Feeling Millieth take off the ledge to go search for food, Kaegan turned back to the healer.
"...very hungry."

Kalierre listened, her face set in the pleasant mask that had guarded her thoughts for turns. A headache was not unusual. And it was good that Kaegan's arm was throbbing a bit. If it hadn't been, she would have been worried. Nothing at all seemed out of the ordinary in the girl's description. Nevertheless, something needled at the back of her mind, and the mystery surrounding the goldrider's fever still bothered her. She resolved that Kaegan needed to be watched closely, at least for a little while longer.
"Hungry, you say? That is easily remedied. Though you'll have to settle for something bland, I'm afraid."
With that, the healer arose, remaining out of the room for a couple of minutes before she returned with a lightly flavored water, weak wine, a slice of bread and some more of the broth she'd attempted to feed Kaegan earlier. It wasn't a lot, but the fluids would help the girl recover faster, and more food would likely turn her stomach when mixed with the painkillers. She'd put a small dosage in with the wine. Hopefully it wouldn't be enough to send Kaegan into dreamland again, though she would like Kaegan to be a little more comfortable, at least.
Questions whirled in her mind as to the details about Benden's horrors. Questions that needed answering. But Kalierre managed to put those aside with the great excercise of her willpower.

Feeling Millieth move away from the infirmary, the goldrider yawned slightly as she awaited the healer's return. When she came back from rummaging for food, Kaegan accepted the meal of broth, Bread and watered down wine from Kalierre, nodding slightly before responding to her.
"Thats fine.... I don't mind."
Picking up the bowl of broth and sipping at it lightly, the injured young woman's mind rand memories of Benden through it. A small shudder ran against the grain of her body, causing the liquid in the bowl of both to become disturbed slightly.
/Never again will I have to go back and experience that pain... if Selenitas doesn't want to defend me in the end then I will flee to somewhere else.../

Watching the girl silently, she noticed the chill that seemed to take Kaegan. Such haunted eyes. A girl so young should not have such shadows behind her gaze. It reminded her a little of the looks she sometimes caught in S'rei's eyes if he thought no one was looking. Kalierre let her head drop to her hand as she settled in a nearby chair, elbow propped upon her knee.
Thoughtfully, she offered, "You should be safe here. At least as safe as anywhere else. The Weyrwoman is not a woman to turn someone away out of fear of facing the consequences." No, Kalierre didn't know the girl all too well, but there was definitely something more to her than simply arrogance and bluster. A gold had picked her, after all. And she certainly did have a good idea as to the precarious position of her weyr, even if it seemed that she often ignored it.
Kalierre regarded Kaegan frankly. "Why did it take you so long to decide to attempt an escape?"

Looking up from her half empty bowl of broth, a moment of silence passed between the Goldrider and the healer before Kaegan's shadowed voice over took it.
"I couldn't escape. I was watched like a hawk everyday... no matter where I was I had a bronzerider or two following me." Pausing for a moment, the young rider began again,"I had tried before to flee, but each attempt failed and my surveillance increased. They no longer trusted me on my own."
Letting a finger wonder around the edge feebly, Kaegan placed the empty broth bowl down onto the tray before picking at the slices of bread.
"Today... or is it now yesterday?... Was my only chance at escaping for a long time."
--
A surge of pain in the back of his head alerted him to the small bronze flash that was trying to grab his attention. Rubbing the back of his head while golden brown locks of hair fell into his face, the well built man turned his attention to the Bronze flit who had hit him.
"What little one-- OW."
Getting hurt again as the bronze bit his ear, F'rah winced in pain before grasping the flit in his hands. Before long a face popped up into his head, undoubtably from the little Bronze, because he had never seen the woman's face before.
"You want me to take you to the infirmary? Fine fine! But no more biting."
Scooting his chair out from the desk, the Weyrlingmaster situated the flit in the nook of his arm before exiting his personal Weyr. It only took moments to get to his Styth before the Bronze and the man where in the air and on their way to the infirmary.

Kalierre nodded slowly at Kaegan's explanation. It didn't sit well with her. The thing that most annoyed the healer was that somehow all of this had gone on without her knowledge. Or S'rei's. Allbeit he had made his opinion of the war no secret - the man kept out of it by saying he would no more fight wingriders he'd flown with than attempt to drown himself - it still seemed unlikely that the two of them would be unaware of something that big going down in Benden. Yes, things had been strange for awhile. But things were often different during a pass. How could she not have known?
The young woman sighed. There was no point in pursuing this train of thought any further; it would not change the facts. "Not everyone would agree with what the leadership is doing at Benden. If they knew...I'm not entirely sure Benden wouldn't see an uprising." It was unlikely. But possible. Though, if she thought of it that way, it made a little more sense that she'd been kept in the dark. And S'rei was the logical choice from which such an uprising would start, something that the leadership must have known when they had barred the dragonpair from the hatching of their own clutch. He was a Fort and Benden bronzerider, the only wingleader refusing to participate in the war, and many would have followed him if only they had been shocked into action. Maybe it was better this way, though. S'rei had enough dangers in his life without adding the risks of leading an insurrection to it.
Kalierre rubbed at her temple. The headache was back. Healer. We've got a green with a pulled muscle. She sighed. Salenth still treated her like she was a force in this infirmary, when she was just a candidate, even if they did allow her to spend the majority of her time doing what she'd been trained to do. All right. We'll take a look at it. She dipped her head to Kaegan. "If you'll excuse me...And if you need anything, just call. I won't be far."

Traction boots clicked slightly as they hit the stone floor of the Infirmary, but it wasn't the noise that brought a small amount of attention to their wearer, it was the man himself. Almost apologetically, the Weyrlingmaster made his way into the center for healing looking for anyone who could possibly be in charge. Looking from knot to knot, F'rah's search only got harder because of the constant nipping from the little bronze. As the man wondered through the empty cots his eye's fell surprisingly on the face that the flit had provided him. Slowly making his way over to the crimson haired girl, F'rah nodded politely before speaking to her.
"Miss? Is this by any chance your flit?"
--
By now the young Goldrider had finished her meal of bland food and had moved onto a puzzle that she had asked an apprentice for. Only looking up from the puzzle when a man's voice reached her ears, Kaegan rubbed her eyes before looking to the Bronze mass of hide in his arms.
"Azaran!"
Opening her good arm to catch the flit who had launched itself at her, the goldrider clutched her Bronze to her chest. After a moment of happy silence, Kaegan looked up at the man that seemed to have a kind presence.
"Thank you for finding him.... and I'm sorry if he bit you."

Kalierre cleared the hair from her eyes as she stood, allowing the fatigue to wash over her for a moment before she pushed it aside completely. The dragonhealer was startled at the voice behind her. Stiffening, she tried not to show it, but the man to whom that voice belonged knew her far too well for that. "You haven't wasted any time, have you?" The young woman felt his warmth behind her. She wanted to lean back, to let him take her in his arms and allow him to support them both. She'd wanted this for a long, long time. His breath tickled the hairs on the back of her neck. Then, with a sigh, she turned to S'rei and smiled wearily. "A healer is a healer, Rei." Kalierre looked away from what lingered in his eyes. "You chose Sage. She was the right choice. But you can't expect me to ever forget that you chose her. Please don't look at me that way."
The bronzerider shrugged helplessly. Kalierre was right. Though the old attraction still lingered, both knew that he had considered and passed up the healer for another woman. That alone would prevent their ever being able to establish a healthy relationship. He admitted it to himself with reluctance. Had he made the wrong choice? No. Even though Sage had died, she was still the better match for him. Two turns of bliss was proof enough of that.
"You didn't come here to see me." It was simple observation. S'rei smiled wryly. Yes, Kalierre knew him, too. Better than anyone else. Perhaps that was the true reason that it would never work between them..."No, I didn't. I came to check up on the greenrider from earlier. And I thought I'd stop by and see how Millieth's rider is coming along." He attempted to keep the comment noncommital, but Kalierre's appraising look confirmed that he'd failed. You really are too easy to read. Why stay angry? If you were in their position, would you have told you? Aside from the question being particularly hard to mire through with all the pronouns, S'rei didn't much like the answer he came up with.
"Kaegan is this way. You'll have to go to her weyr to find Trisha. We released her over a candlemark ago."
The two came to watch the short exchange between Weyrlingmaster and Junior Weyrwoman. Kalierre smiled knowingly as she saw S'rei pull a face when he noticed the goldrider had a flit. The bronzerider and his aversions...Though she felt rather uncomfortable near the Weyrlingmaster. She was, after all, officially a candidate, and wore the knots to prove it. In practice, though, the weyr could get better use out of her as an experienced dragonhealer than through the mundane chores most candidates were assigned to. It didn't help that she was one of the ranking journeymen in Selenitas, either. This created something of a confusion as to how she was to be treated, and how she was to act.
S'rei was infinitely respectful to the Weyrlingmaster, offering him a dragonrider's salute and a small smile. "Weyrlingmaster F'rah. You must be looking forward to taking a new clutch under your wing." He'd never personally met the man, but just as he'd heard of F'rah and seen the man from afar, he didn't doubt that the Weyrlingmaster had likely heard of the deposed Wingleader turned wingrider who suffered from amnesia. There were a lot of rumors going around. The man turned his gaze to Kaegan.
"You'll have to forgive me for my - antagonism - earlier. It was uncalled for. I am S'rei, bonded to Salenth." He looked for a spark of recognition, but none was immediately forthcoming. "The fact that I could have been a Wingleader at Benden for turns and not know of what was going on there aggravates me. I trust you didn't take it personally?"

"Your welcome Miss." Smiling kindly to the injured girl, F'rah let his arm drop to his side before turning to leave her side. Though there was an unexpected obstacle in his way, a man and a healer had approached the girl's cot as he had been returning her flit to her. Letting his eyes wonder to the man's knots, the Weyrlingmaster pleasantly returned the dragonrider's salute before responding to the man. "Ah greetings Bronzerider S'rei... I am in fact quite looking forward to this year's batch of Weyrlings." Nodding slightly to the healer after he was done replying to the Bronzerider, F'rah gave her a cheery smile. Although the smile lessened when S'rei began to speak to the injured girl.
"Miss Healer. May I have a word with you? It shan't take long."
Pausing before giving a polite nod to the girl and the Bronzerider, F'rah motioned for the healer to take the first steps that would carry them a few yards away. Only looking up to see a large gold alight on a high up ledge.
---
Rocking the bronze flit happily as she watched the kind man began to go, Kaegan blinked as the man and the healer who had been with her before approached. Why was the man she had spoken to earlier come to the infirmary? Was it because he wanted to see her? It seemed only talking to him would eventually lead to her questions.
"Hello S'rei of Bronze Salenth. Do not worry, I did not take what you said earlier personally. My arrival was less than expected..." Letting a pause draw out between them, the Goldrider searched for his name within her mind. As it dawned on her, Kaegan continued to speak. "I remember your name from the records the Weyrleaders made me copy in case of the originals destruction... You used to be a Wingleader." A photographic memory helped in the Jr. Weyrwoman remembering things she had seen long ago... but it was also a curse.
A large pump of her wings returned her to the ledge upon which she had been situated before her hunt for food. When she had left there had only been a woman near her Mine, but now... there were two men and the annoying leech Azaran. Making sure they all knew she was there, the now full Millieth carefully watched the humans scurry around under her.
