It had taken awhile. A long while. Emoyan had hoped to avoid the gather altogether. But after a time of staring at all the empty space in his new quartering at the candidate barracks, he had finally decided it was time to go get something to fill up that empty space. It really was bothersome, having blank spaces staring back at him.
So off to the gather he had gone. Even though that had required a borrowed trip adragonback. He tried really hard not to think about it ... not to let it bother him. He had something to do ...
Voyager and Rascal had followed him, as always, as if the two thought he was still in danger of getting stabbed or something. At least they weren't clinging anymore. They were satisfied to twirl and play with other flitters on the roofs of the various stalls, so long as they could actively see him at any time.
The Harper stall was his first stop. Time to get some more instruments ... as Ka'rys had suggested. Maybe he did need a change from just his gitar! Something that sounded different. It only took him a few moments to decide what it was he wanted... a good drum, one of those really nice floor harps (might as well have a decoration at the same time, no?), and maybe a good hand harp at the same time, for a slightly higher tone.
At least some of the instruments looked nice and sound. Emoyan was no novice, and appreciated exllence in his tools. He selected a hand harp and picked it up in one hand, before testing out the sound with the other, fingers plucking out a small ditty on the strings. He disliked the tone, and set it down to try a different one. It wasn't neccessarily out of tune, so much as the quality of the sound of the note simply didn't please him... and he wanted something he'd enjoy hearing played.

The young journeyman running the stall looked when Emoyan approached. He had been tinkering with a set of pipes, hoping to get the sound out better. He was a little nervous. He hadn't been away from Harper Hall very long and had had no customers all day. But it seemed like that this man was a fellow Harper, or at least knew his instruments. The harp he had rejected was a bit weak sounding to his ears.
"Would you like any help?" the journeyman asked, quiet but polite. You'd think a Harper would be fine talking to people, but this one communicated much better with music than with words.

"Good day." Emoyan greeted. "I'm looking to get a nice harp, a good hand harp, and maybe a good drum, too." He answered, setting down the harp he had picked up. "I have a notion to acquire quite a few peices, but I want them to be good ones, not ... well ... let's just say I'd like to like what I was hearing." He said, with a nod.
"Any suggestions?" He asked, knowing that the vendor would know his wares better than anyone. He also knew that he'd likely said all the right things to get shown the quality peices, rather than the apprentice made peices. The vendor was probably going to be hoping to make a highmark sale. Which Emoyan was actually willing to do ... he had the marks to spend.

The journeyman nodded with a knowing smile. Most of the things on display were for the Holder children, who didn't really care so long as it made noise. This man had clearly had Harper training, or at least a good ear for music. "I think I have some that might be more to your taste," he agreed.
He started with the harps and brought out a large one and a small one that he had fashioned himself. The design was fairly simple, but he was rather pleased with the sound that came from both of them. Particularly the hand harp, since it was hard to prevent something so small from sounding weak. "How do these sound?"

Emoyan accepted the instruments, and then danced his fingers over the strings, picking out an airy mellody. And then he considered how the thing looked, checking it over for quality of materials as well as craftmanship. The last thing he wanted to do was buy an instrument that would bust in a week due to a hidden knot somewhere. But the peice seemed free of any such blemishes, which he was glad to see. Setting it aside gently with some care, he turned his attention to the larger floor harp. This he gave the same consideration. Though he did wonder if maybe a gold and silver embossed instrument was a bit much for the area he was looking to place it in. In the end, he decided that it would be alright ... after all, the place needed some kind of decor.
Finally, he nodded approvingly. "These will do. Do you also have a good quality drum?" He asked, inquisitively, standing the big harp back up again upon its heavy base.

The young man smiled, pleased that Emoyan had approved of his weyrs. "Of course." He lifted two small drums for the man to see. Each were similar in size and make, but varied on sound. One had a deep, rich boom, and the other a higher, sharper one. "Please chose whichever you like best."

Emoyan nodded, and gave each drum a thorough tapping, his fingers wandering all across the surface from edge to edge through the middle. He listened to the varying tones they each made, and then nodded approvingly. "Actually? I like them both..." He scratched his chin for a moment, and then shrugged. "Sure ... both of them." He looked at the other instruments there, and decided he had better quit while he was ahead ... sure he had marks to spend, and sure he needed something to stick in his office ... but he didn't need to start looking like a one man band either! He considered maybe a wind instrument, as after this he would have three strings and two percussion. But ultimately he decided against it ... not this time. Maybe later on.
"Alright ... the nice floor harp, this nice hand harp, the two good drums ... how much for all that?" Emoyan asked, pretty sure it was within his means. But he also wanted to make sure the vendor knew which peices he wanted, too.

The young man glanced at a hide where he kept track of the prices of things. Journeyman made instruments were pricier, but no where near as expensive as master made ones. He didn't even have any of those available. He waved over Emoyan's choices with a smile. "Eight marks for all of them," he replied with a nod.

"Alright. That's fine." Emoyan nodded, simply, and counted out the requested eight marks onto the tabletop. He then slid them across to the young man, and then stood there for a moment considering how he was going to get the items back to the Weyr. A floor harp was a pretty big instrument ... and not exactly something one wanted to be banging around. Especially not a nice one like that was.
And then there were the drums and the hand harp as well, that needed moving... he'd have to find some help, that was for sure. Maybe there was a candidate or two around that he could recruit-?
