You need more friends, MySeri, Ildyth commented, crunching down a wherry bone as he curled and uncurled his tail, fully enjoying every moment of his meal. Futh says he has lots of friends, more than me, and you don't have any for me to count either. You don't even try to talk to the rest of the healers, he sighed gustily.
Serissa, busy repacking her own midday meal into the carrysac she'd brought, drew her eyebrows together briefly, totally ignoring the gore fest in front of her. Ildyth was not a neat eater. Who's Futh? she asked, a hint of concern in her mindvoice. Remember, Ildyth, we're not really supposed to be here. We put in our transfer papers, but if anyone finds out we forged them, we're out. We can't go back to Fort, she added, cutting off Ildyth's explanation. Sometimes she wasn't sure if the Blue understood why they couldn't go back, but it was imperative that he did. Couldn't be blabbing where they were from to every dragon he came across.
Futh is a blue, we sometimes sun together. I'm skinnier than he is, but I think his wings are bigger. And he doesn't care where I'm from, Ildyth replied, a touch of sulk in his voice. And I'm still hungry, MySeri. Let me give you a ride back towards the Weyr, where there are people! You can talk to someone while I catch something else delicious. Ildyth's change of tone was instantaneous - now he was brightly excited, his eyes moving from yellow to blue without seeming to go through green first.
Laughing, Serissa swung her carrysac onto her shoulder and double checked the pouch of supplies at her waist - she was never without a first aid kit - before mounting Ildyth, clipping in even for this short flight. It turned out to be a good idea, as Ildyth's sudden excitement translated his usual bounce to the sky, and it proved to be a bumpy ride. Idly, Serissa wondered how she'd fare on an angry herdbeast. It couldn't be much worse than this.
Ildyth dropped her off near the entrance to the feeding grounds, although he wouldn't hunt from there. Serissa didn't see anyone around, but if Ildyth wanted her to be more social, she'd try. Climbing up onto the fence to wait, she watched as her blue flitted across the sky, moving more like a sparrow than a dragon. It wasn't long before he plummeted into the trees, leaving her alone with her thoughts (and about 200 head of bovine, but they didn't count, did they?)
