“Come on Feyrianth! You can do it I know you can. It’s easy. One little jump.” Erilena encouraged from her position on the ground. The four winged green turned whirling yellow eyes to her bonded and shook her head, back stepping away from the edge of the hill. I can’t. I can’t. The weyrling strode quickly to her dragon’s side and stroked the obediently dropped head. “You can Fey. I know you can. You can do it and you’ll be the best flier ever. Trust me.” The green crooned uncertainly and gave her four wings a flap. I will try. Kissing the dragon’s soft muzzle the weyrling mounted as the dragon crouched to allow her to. Making sure her straps where secure, she gave a mental prod to the green. Okay I’m ready. You can do this Feyrianth. Everyone else is already in the air.
The four winged green snorted and took a few steps back. A slight tremble ran through her before she gingerly stepped forward. She picked up the pace and just as they got to the edge of the hill she pulled up sharply with a keen. I just can’t. I can’t Lena love. I’m sorry. Don’t be angry with me please. I don’t want to hurt you if I fall. I’m not like the others. I’m different. Their wings are better. They can do all this stuff so easy. Feyrianth dropped her head and a whimper came out of her throat as she tightened her wings against her back and trembled.
Erilena just closed her eyes and leaned forward to wrap her arms as far around her dragon as they would go. “I’d never be angry with you Love. It’s ok. I understand. It is scary.” Straightening up she concentrated on sending her dragon loving feelings and unstrapped herself to slip off and stroke the green’s eye ridges. “It’s ok Fey. If you don’t want to do it I won’t force you. But don’t you want to fly with your brothers and sisters? I know it’s scary but they are no better than you.” She said firmly.
Feyrianth just crooned sadly and pressed her nuzzle against hers. Erilena continued to stroke the green’s muzzle. Inwardly she was upset but not at Fey. Never at Fey. More at herself. Why hadn’t she noticed how worried the little dragon had been about flying? Yes she was different but it just never occurred to the weyrling to think her dragon incapable of flight. At the last lesson Feyrianth had just balked and completely refused to glide like the others. Erilena hadn’t been able to make her budge and Mavenath had only made it worse by insisting she try. Of course that had scared her even more and there was no help after that. The weyrling had thought that maybe alone she could convince Feyrianth to try but it was to no avail. The rest of the class was already flying. What now?

It was mere happenstance that he even noticed, as Behruth was simply enjoying himself in the skies while His and Checkoth's were busy in the infirmary. He normally spent that time with Checkoth, but the brown and Phremath seemed suitably occupied, and Behruth wanted some time to himself. Most wouldn't have believed it, watching the brown, but he did enjoy some time to himself in relative peace from time-to-time. Relative, considering the ripple of consciousness that was His and PMS's happy little squeals from somewhere behind his neckridge as he rolled lazily in the air kept him from being completely alone to his thoughts. And pleasures.
But yes, he did notice just the same, remembered his own leap from that self-same hill - or rather, was aware of the memory of His that included that. All the weyrlings had been moved into weyrs now, hadn't they? But the fourwinged one didn't seem to even want to make the short leap off the hill, almost as if afraid, and he banked on one wingtip, circling above them before folding his wings. He swirled downward, not wanting to draw it out too much, but not caring to go into a steep dive, either. Backwinging, he touched down lightly at the base of the hill, neck arching as he looked up at her with concern.
Beautiful Feyrianth...have you pulled something? I can get Phremath's... No, he hadn't had much contact with the weyrlings - though he'd wanted to! - but she was at the infirmary some times, too, and he did know the names of all the little weyrlings. Or not really so little anymore, as the case may be. Behruth tucked his wings neatly, while PMS skittered out onto his snout, clinging to it and making some sort of mental comment to the brown that had him rumbling in amusement. He thinks you make a lovely flutterbye. Apparently he refuses to believe that you are a dragon...says dragons aren't that cute. Stop flirting with her, PMS...the Vex might get jealous, Ruth added, including both Feyrianth and Erilena in the comment for his own amusement. The blue frilled and hunkered down in a playful, exaggerated quiver. Oh, scary Vex wrath.
Huffing softly, he approached the greenpair, neck arched in a very pleasant, non-threatening manner that wasn't so much calculated as simply Behruth. His eyes were a quiet, calm blue, though orange and yellow lanced through the hues at irregular intervals, his concern for the weyrling unabated. He nuzzled her neck lightly, before dipping his head to sniff at Hers. Hello healer Feyrianth's. Is there any way I can help? With what he wasn't sure, but something wasn't right, this much he was sure of. PMS offered that maybe the flutterbye dragon was hungry and her tummy was making scary rumbly sounds that made her nervous. Behruth eyed the creature on the end of his snout in amusement. PMS squeaked. What? It wasn't that silly.

Behruth had not been noticed until he started his descent and Feyrianth drew her head away from hers to offer a welcoming croon. It is Behruth come to see us Lena. I see that. Erilena replied as she gave the brown dragon a short wave, wondering just what had brought him out here. Did they need her at the infirmary for something? The four wing green shifted as the brown touched her mind and she gave a soft rumble. No. I did not pull anything. She ducked her head her, eyes whirling in slight embarrassment. I am fine. Nothing hurts. Phremath’s will not be needed. Erilena was only privy to one part of the conversation currently and she tilted her head up to her green. The brown had no doubt seen their aborted glide. That was probably why he had asked. He was concerned that maybe she had hurt herself. The weyrling smiled. Sweet of him to come check on them.
Looking down on the brown she only just caught the small smudge of blue and she winced. Mandyr. Blue mandyr. Erilena averted her gaze and felt her heart constrict momentarily. Seeing mandyrs was still painful. Probably always would be. The comment however cheered her up especially since it caused Feyrianth to croon loudly her eyes losing much of their previous yellow dominance. Oh. She fluttered her wings before tucking them again. It is very sweet of you to say so PMS. I do look like a flutterbye don’t I? I only wish I could be as graceful as they are. Lowering her head she nudged her bonded to make sure she was okay. Erilena raised a hand to gratefully stroke her muzzle. Content that she was in fact okay with the mandyr, if still a bit sad, the dragon took a step forward to meet Behruth. His nuzzle was accepted happily and Feyrianth enthusiastically returned the favor with a soft huff.
Erilena chuckled and patted the offered dragon snout happily. The mandyr on it was ignored not out of rudeness but for the simple fact that she just couldn’t pay attention to him. Her own mandyr had been blue. The wound was still there. Tilting her head up at the brown as she was addressed the weyrling smiled softly. “Well Feyrianth and I where going to try and glide. The other weyrlings have already done it.” She turned to Feyrianth who had ducked her head and sadly whimpered. Frowning she reached out to caress her snout with her other hand. “She doesn’t think she can do it. She’s afraid she’ll hurt me.” With a final pat to Behruth’s muzzle she considered him for a moment. “I don’t know if you can help or not but maybe you’d be willing to show Feyrianth how?” The green just nudged at Behruth and offered sadly. My wings are wrong. I don’t think they will work like your’s do.

Glad to hear that Feyrianth wasn't hurt, that just confused Behruth all the more. (It would not have occurred to him to think that any dragon could be afraid of flying, though it should have if he'd taken a second to think about it. After all, her wings were not quite like the wings of their other brethren, were they?) PMS squeaked happily at Feyrianth's words, Ruth watching Feyrianth's for a moment and electing to only include the green dragon in his speech. He says the flutterbyes would be reluctant to fly with you for fear of being put to shame, Behruth responded, laughingly. I should be careful if I were you, little sister; I think Pretty Mandyr Shiny is after something from you.
Listening to both dragon and rider, Behruth's head dipped slightly, clearly considering what they had to say very seriously. It wasn't a problem that he was certain he could help with, now that he gave it some thought. Her wings were different. They moved sort of like his did, but there was so much extra space, and he wondered if that would change how she flew. Nevertheless, he crooned to the greenpair. One thing he could tell; they hadn't tried because of Feyrianth's doubts. You never ever succeeded unless you at least tried. It is not so difficult, he stated, reassuringly, brushing past Feyrianth and maintaining contact to attempt to make her feel a little better. The male trundled to the edge of the hill, flaring his wings even before he leapt, then jumping forward and gliding easily downward. He didn't even flap his wings to make the landing easier, instead keeping them open the entire time.
His head swiveled toward Feyrianth. I do not know if your wings will make a difference or not, little sister, he commented honestly. But if you are worried about Yours, she can stay with me while you try. It is only a glide; I don't think you will have any problems. Phremath can glide and she has tiny wings. Some of the little cousins have very very big wings for their bodies and can glide. Why don't you try? You won't know until you do. Behruth honestly didn't think the wings would be a problem for this. For doing other things...maybe. But first things first...get into the air at least.

Feyrianth raised her head and gave a short bark of dragon laughter, her eyes whirling in pleasant blues the barest trace of yellow still visible. She ducked her head and flared her wings out to dip in a curtsy to the mandyr. You flatter me my little Pretty mandyr shiny. She said in a light airy tone including Behruth in on the words. Amusement swirled through her eyes and she turned her head back up to look at the brown. I couldn’t imagine what he would want from me. I do not have much. Just a small collection of shinys. The green was still young enough to be a tad bit naïve in some areas and it showed as she crooned to the blue mandyr. Thank you for the compliments little one. Even if they are a bit silly. Tucking her wings back the green lowered her head to rub it against Erilena in clear affection.
Erilena absently stroked Feyrianth’s offered head as she regarded Behruth. As he turned to trot towards the edge of the hill the weyrling turned her attention to Feyrianth watching her examine his moves intently. The barest trace of nervousness swirled through her gaze as Behruth completed his glide and turned to speak to her. It looked so very easy. And yet there was something about it that terrified her. Ducking her head behind her bonded she gently nudged her forward. He wants me to try it. Will you go and stand by him? I don’t think I can bring myself to do it with you. I don’t want to hurt you my love. Her voice was strained and full of nervous apprehension.
Leaning forward Erilena pressed her lips against Feyrianth’s muzzle. “You can do it sweetheart. I know you can.” Giving her a final scratch to an eye ridge the weyrling turned and trotted down the hill towards the brown. Approaching him she gave a smile and moved to stand beside him eyes going to the top of the hill. Come on Fey. You can do it. The four winged green crooned nervously and brushed Behruth’s mind. I know Phremath can do it. I know the flitters can as well. I want to fly. I really do. I just... I will give it a try. Circling once nervously, she backed up a few spaces. Taking a slow deep breath she started forward at a decent clip and upon coming to the edge of the hill flung herself off it spreading her wings. Surprisingly no, she didn’t fall like she had thought but it became apparent to her quickly that she wasn’t gliding straight and she was going way too fast.
In a panic she tried to alter her flight path with a quick flap which only caused her to ascend slightly, not doing much to check her speed and direction. Reaching forward with her forepaws as she hit the ground she pitched forward and stumbled, tearing into the ground but somehow keeping her balance. Trembling slightly she swiveled her head to her audience. That wasn’t very good was it? Tucking her wings she trembled slightly. I almost went splat. It’s so easy for everyone else….

PMS, apparently deciding that he very much liked the large flutterbye, hopped off of Behruth and glided neatly onto Feyrianth, crooning and rubbing up against one of her headknobs before curling around it happily. Yes, he liked this one, they should claim her. Behruth was more than just a little amused. They couldn't claim her like PMS had claimed Vex, or Theirs had claimed Checkoth's. The blue deflated slightly. But why? Because dragons didn't usually claim other dragons. They preferred to be friendly with many dragons, making them all brothers and sisters who loved each other instead of just a pair of mates. PMS considered that explanation for a moment, then apparently accepted it - if grudgingly.
Behruth did not respond verbally to Feyrianth's words, instead coiling his tail companionably around Erilena, lowering his head within range of her and shamelessly presenting the young woman with his eyeridges. He kept a gentle, supportive touch on the young green's mind, encouraging her to try wordlessly. The brown was only slightly concerned at her speed, knowing that even if she managed to fall she wouldn't be hurt too much. It wasn't the largest of hills after all. That's why weyrlings used it for gliding, so they wouldn't hurt themselves if they made mistakes, no? He'd seen much worse, too. Oquith could never land right to save her life, Checkoth had taken ages to adjust to his tails, and Behruth himself wasn't the most graceful at landing, either.
Always looks easier than it is, the male responded, slipping away from Erilena with a passing carress from his tail, only hopping into the air after he'd cleared enough distance not to knock her over. He settled neatly near Feyrianth, backwinging enough to come to a near stall before touching earth. You didn't fall, though, he added happily, allowing his pride at her attempt loose to wrap around her. Oquith always used to tumble when Checkoth and I were weyrlings...we were afraid she might squish Hers, but she got better and she never did hurt him. Checkoth had trouble with his tails. I fell over my fair share, too. Landings are the hardest thing, but you'll get used to it, and get better the more you practice.
He half-coiled around her, then nudged her back towards the hill. It gets easier the more times you do it. I promise. Go on; give it another try. PMS slid down to sprawl on her muzzle, kneading at the hide just above her nostrils not unlike a feline might. Would she fly again, please, please, he so loved the feeling of flying! PMS's narrow wings weren't even good for a glide, really, which was ever so sad. Take him flying please?

Erilena smiled as the brown coiled his tail about her and presented his ridges as well. Sweet Behruth was. Reaching over she scratched obediently at his ridges as she waited for Feyrianth to make the jump. When the green finally did leave the ground she dropped her hand and watched only flinching when the green stumbled. “That was really good Fey!” She said enthusiastically as the brown uncurled from her to join the four winged green. It had been good too. Not the best landing ever and not the straightest flight but the weyrling was just happy to have gotten the green to glide at all. “See Sweetheart you can do it just fine. It just takes practice. You’ll be a master in no time.” Well it might take he longer than a few tries but encouragement never hurt anyone.
Feyrianth crooned softly to Behruth as he approached, her eyes whirling in yellow and green. His words and the pride he allowed to reach her quickly caused the yellow to fade and a bit of blue whirled in to replace it. She had done it hadn’t she? Hers was pleased too. It made the green feel a bit better. She hadn’t gone splat after all. Reaching over she nuzzled the brown’s neck as he half curled about her. Landings are very hard. So is gliding straight. She tilted her head slightly and looked back at the top of the hill. The more she practiced the better she would get. It only made sense. Snorting to clear her nostrils she shook from head to tail and then nosed Behruth again. Okay. I’ll try again.
As Feyrianth turned to make her way back up the hill she gave a croon to hers. Erilena smiled and brushed against her mind lovingly. Good job darling. As the four winged green made her way back up the hill PMS in tow she rumbled to him. Yes little one I will take you flying. Finally reaching the top of the hill she turned and looked down at hers and the brown. With a determined snort she backed up and ran forward again.
Springing off the hill she opened her wings to glide again. This time she was higher and she tried to angle her wings to adjust her incoming angle. It worked, but not as well as she had hoped. Again she was coming in a bit to fast. Sticking her font legs out to land she overbalanced and ended up somersaulting as she landed. That had smarted a bit and she shook her head to clear it. Are you okay little one? She asked frantically upon remembering that her had been with her. She hadn’t hit her head but what if she had landed on him or worse?
On her back, all four feet in the air, Feyrianth’s wings where spread to either side of her body making rolling over to get to her feet difficult. Instead she waited for a moment and tried to look at the top of her head where PMS should be. Sadly her ridges where in the way. Sending a quick reassurance to hers that she was in fact all right she turned her head as well as she could towards Behruth. How do I slow down? First things first though. She needed to get herself upright.

Behruth crooned in response to her agreement, nudging her along mentally in silent encouragement. He still remembered Feyrianth from when she was so little he had to be careful not to squish her in their games by the infirmary. And here she was flying now. It was...it made him happy, but in a way a little sad. The little flutterbye dragon was growing up - not so much smaller than him anymore, even. He didn't let her feel that, however, simply gently encouraged her, adding a silent, private caution to PMS. Be careful little blueling. The salamandyr responded that he would be fine and she was taking him flying! He bounced happily, letting loose with intermittent squees as they climbed higher.
Behruth watched the glide, tail flicking slightly. She'd seemed to even out some, but...oh that was fast. Turning his head aside slightly, he watched out of the corner of one eye as she tipped full over herself, a swirl of concern entering into his eyes for the hatchling and his sky shiny. PMS's delighted squeal at the new game made it pretty clear he was okay, though, the blue rubbing all over Feyrianth's head and begging for another ride. Do it again, please please! Ruth called him back, sending the mandyr skittering over the ground and leaping onto his leg. The brown nudged him slightly. Maybe Feyrianth would give him a ride later.
He trotted over to the green weyrling in the awkward gait that those meant to fly often had. Feyrianth? You're not hurt, are you? Ignoring the question in favor of helping to nudge her back to his feet, he nuzzled her worriedly until he was certain she was okay. Then he glanced skyward, considering. Maybe I should show you? A brief glint of mischief worked into the swirling colors of his eyes. You'll have to promise to trust me and not move, though. The idea was hatched partially out of fun, but the other part was she could see best closer, no?
The small brown moved apart from her just enough to get room to rise, leaping into the air and coiling upwards lazily with each downsweep of his wings. Remember not to move...here I come. His wings suddenly snapped back and he plummeted, straight down, leveling out only once the ground rose up to meet him and flying swift along the downward curve of the hill. He arched his back hard, backwinging mightily to stall just in front of Feyrianth, hovering for a few moments to allow his hindlegs to come to earth gently, his forelegs touching not long after. He folded his wings neatly along his flanks and stretched his neck forward to nose Feyrianth. Did you see?

Erilena had covered her mouth with her hands when Feyrianth took her tumble. But the quick reassurance that she was okay helped. It was nerve wracking watching the green and not being able to really do anything to help. The weyrling sat on the ground tucking her legs underneath herself and settling down to watch the two dragons interact. There wasn’t anything she could do and she trusted Behruth. He had known Feyrianth since she was little. He and Checkoth often had played with her. Phremath as well. If she had to trust anyone with her green’s safety over the matter it was probably a good thing that it was Behruth. Nibbling on he bottom lip she sent reassurances back to Feyrianth.
The four winged green gave a wiggle on the ground. She was happy that PMS had not been hurt. She would offer him a ride again when she got better at this whole thing. Behruth’s help was very welcome and in no time she was on her feet. His nuzzles where accepted happily. No, no, I am not injured. Feyrianth stretched each of her wings and gave them a hard flap to make doubly sure they where not strained or injured in any way. Happy that they where, in fact, fine and functional she ducked her head and regarded Behruth with interest. Oh he was going to show her? Giving a soft chirp she nodded her head vigorously. I will not move. I promise. Sitting down on her haunches the green coiled her tail about them and furled her wings. Must pay attention now. This would be important.
Feyrianth titled her head to watch Behruth’s near effortless rise. It was oh so lovely. If only she could fly like that. A touch of wistfulness coiled through her but never jealously. The green was simply not the jealous type. She could appreciate beauty even if she couldn’t achieve it herself. Then the brown was reminding her to stay still and she crooned. Yes I will be like a rock. His downward plummet was a tad scary to watch and as he approached her a small tendril of yellow whirled through her eyes. As Behruth back winged in front of her however the color faded and she crooned, the sound light and airy and containing just a bit of awe.
Thrusting her nose forward to met his the green licked his snout. Yes. I saw. It was very well done. That does not look all too difficult. Ducking her head Feyrianth opened her wings and looked back to examine them. They where wings where they not? Why would they not work. Giving a sudden determined snort the green got to her feet and shook from nose to tail tip. I will try that trick I think. Bounding forwards suddenly she made her way up the hill and arched her neck looking down.
A small tremor ran though her but regardless she backed up and sprung off the hill. As she approached the bottom she arched her back as the brown had showed her and back winged. It brought her to a near complete stop and it was all to easy to lower her back feet to the ground and then touch front feet as well. Giving a small bugle of happiness Feyrianth sprung forward to nuzzle her brownfriend in glee. Look! I did it! I did it!
Erilena silently cheered along with her but from her vantage point could see a slight problem. As she had back winged the trailing edge of Feyrianth’s back wings had come mere inches from snagging on her talons. That would have to be watched carefully. But all the same she couldn’t help but be happy for her dragon’s excitement.

Strange as it might have sounded if he'd voiced it, Behruth had the feeling that Feyrianth would manage the 'trick' better than he or any other dragon with a less expansive wingspan could manage. Perhaps this opinion came from watching the flutterbyes that often seemed to fly vertical, as if that was their most natural position. If her wings worked similar to theirs, she wouldn't have to put as much effort into stalling as a dragon like Behruth did. After a dive like that, moving at that speed, after all, he'd felt the strain in his muscles. A familiar one by now...all dragons tended to experiment once they got older, learning what they could and couldn't manage. Behruth knew that his body could handle quite a bit, for instance, but there was such a thing as trying to stop yourself while going too fast and attempting to make too tight a turn that he had to keep aware of. That, and he couldn't fly in a good storm like some of the larger dragons could.
He crooned in response to her praise. It is not so difficult, Feysister. You probably are better at it, he added truthfully. Glancing at Feyrianth's, he wondered how comfortable she was with this whole thing, after watching the green take such a nasty tumble last time. Well, it had scared him a little, too, but she wasn't going to learn unless she tried. He had every faith in Feyrianth. If the flutterbyes could do it, than the dragon with the flutterbye wings could, too, right? It made sense to him, anyway.
And, sure enough...she managed it so easily he couldn't help but feel a mild pang of envy. Not a single mistake. There she settled beautifully, as if she'd been born doing it. That was absolutely perfect! he exclaimed proudly. Your wings are perfect for that. Just make sure to tuck your hind legs in...don't want to tear your own wings with your claws. He nuzzled her lightly on the neck. Did you want to take Yours with you next time? I am certain you can do it again just as perfectly as the first time, he added. Then maybe we can go flying a little.

Feyrianth basked in the praise Behruth offered her, her eyes whirling a vibrant blue. Yes she had done quite well hadn’t she? The suggestion the older dragon gave her came as a slight surprise, and the green turned her head to look at her hind legs as if only now noticing how close they where to her back wings. It seemed she would have to be careful. She crooned and nuzzled the brown in response. Yes I will be careful next time. With a flick of the appendages Feyrianth closed her wings and turned to look at hers. The young green debated for a moment before huffing softly.
Take hers? Yes she had done a good job that last time but she did not want hers hurt. For a moment she minced the grass beneath her feet with her black talons and then gave a soft croon, brushing against her bonded’s mind. Lenalove? Would you like to glide with me this time? I think it would be alright. To Behruth she offered another quick nuzzle. I will take her this time yes. As for flying, well Feyrianth wasn’t quite sure yet what she thought about that.
Erilena stood and brushed her pants off when Feyrianth spoke. I’m coming Fey. As the weyrling drew closer to the two dragons she offered a smile to Behruth and walked towards Feyrianth. As her dragon crouched to allow her to mount she swung herself up with practiced ease. Feyrianth might not fly with her, but they had practiced this much at least. Rising back to her feet the green made sure hers was safely strapped in before making her way up the hill. For a moment she paused. Ready Lenalove? Erilena gave a mental nod and brushed Feyrianth’s mind with encouragement, as she tried to swallow some of her nervousness. It was probably normal to be nervous after all. She hadn’t paid much attention to her classmate’s expressions when they took that first glide but she was sure it was quite close to what she was feeling. Nervous anticipation, maybe even a little fear.
Tossing her head Feyrianth trotted to the end of the hill and flung herself off this time with no hesitation. It was actually quite nice. Exciting even. Drawing to the bottom of the hill the green back winged again, this time making sure to keep her back feet out of the way. Once she had her wings in the right position she softly touched down. Keeping her wings extended she crooned as Erilena laughed and leaned over to hug her green. “Feyrianth that was amazing!” She exclaimed bouncing slightly in her seat. “Really. That was fun. Let’s go again. Unless you’d like to try and get in the air now?” The green crooned and turned her head back to nudge her bonded’s foot. Thank you minelove.
She could glide, just like the rest, after all and she wouldn’t hurt hers either.
