Nabrik kicked at a stone, sending it flying past the fence. He was in a foul mood this morning. Not only had he not impressed a dragon, but everyone seemed to have forgotten about him since then. He wasn't allowed to stay in the Candidate Barracks since he was too young, which left him staying in the Creche. He hated it. They were treating him like he was some little kid. It was all so boring! The only bright spot so far was that Chandath seemed to have decided he was good to have around and let him help Kale sometimes.
Path skipped ahead of her master, pawing at the dirt under a fence post. She yipped playfully and dragged a stick over. Nabrik tossed it for her, but he wasn't really in the mood. He scowled at the new weyrlings feeding their dragons. He should have been one of them! He trotted closer. The dragons were so cool, he couldn't stand it. Maybe Chandath would let him get close again. It was better then just standing around. Maybe he could think of something fun to do to that stuffy Emoyan later to cheer himself up. Croakers in his office might be a good start.

This morning even feeding Balath was made difficult by her boundless energy and enthusiasm, so much so that K’fuzzi didn’t even want to think about what caring for her hide was likely to be like. Hopefully her breakfast would slow her down a bit. It should, K’fuzzi considered, because she had to have eaten her own weight in meat chunks by now, even with the bits she seemed determined to fling about and play with.
Balath paused, ready to toss yet another chunk of meat in the air to catch (she had to catch them sometime, right?) and watched curiously as someone through a stick. Why would anyone want to throw a perfectly good stick away? Sticks could make patterns! Then something else caught Balath’s attention and she squealed shrilly, causing K’fuzzi to wince. FuzziMine what is that? It’s furry look. What’s it doing with that stick? Without waiting for a reply Balath turned like a compass to face the canine’s owner and went bounding cheerfully up to the boy. Hello! I’m Balath and that’s FuzziMine over there with his hand on his face! Who’re you? Why are you throwing sticks around? What’s that? The striped green practically bounced in her enthusiasm. She’d found a new friend! She wasn’t quite sure why K’fuzzi was smacking himself in the head though.
K’fuzzi groaned as Balath shot off, there was no way he could stop even a baby dragon from going where she pleased when she was moving at that speed, not unless he wanted Balath to step on him. Instead he smacked his head, shook it, and then followed in Balath’s wake. As K’fuzzi took in the age of the boy his dragon was harassing a little understanding dawned. The lad must be just a little shy of the right age to have been a candidate, which explained why he was watching the not very exciting (and quite gross) business of feeding young dragons. Well now he probably had more draconic attention than he wanted, Balath could be quite overwhelming at times. ‘It’s a canine Balath, A pet.’ K’fuzzi answered the question somewhat belatedly as he came up beside his green. ‘Um, hi. Sorry.’ K’fuzzi always seemed to be at a loss for things to say when Balath started the conversation. ‘I’m K’fuzzi, this is Balath. She’s not about to eat your canine, or you.’ K’fuzzi winced slightly as he introduced himself, personally he still would have preferred Ka’zin, after his grandfather, but Balath was determined it was K’fuzzi.

Fortunately, or perhaps unfortunately, Nabrik was too enamored with dragons in general to actually be afraid of them. If he'd been a little bit smarter he might have questioned what a large, toothy creature wanted when it charged him down. As it was, he's eyes lite up when he saw Balath coming. It wasn't Chandath, but all dragons were awesome in his eyes. He hadn't met a single one he didn't like, which wasn't many so far. Riders, on the other hand, weren't met with as much awe anymore.
Path was more then a bit surprised to see Balath coming. She yipped in fear and dropped the stick to run away. Unfortunately, her master didn't seem to understand the concept of fleeing from danger. She darted back, tugging at his pant leg insistently. Nabrik was grinning at Balath. He leaned down, giving Path a hug to show her it was alright. "I'm Nabrik and this is Path!" he greeted her excitedly. "We were playing a game, do you want to play?" He had no idea if dragons liked playing fetch. Just because they were smarter then canines didn't mean they didn't like to have fun.
Nabrik rolled his eyes at K'fuzzi. "I aren't stupid," he said pointedly. "I knew that." Well, he didn't really. It just hadn't occurred to him, but he didn't feel like being polite to the weyrling. Besides, he had such a silly name. "What kind of name is K'fuzzi anyway? Sounds like a feline." It was an innocent enough question, but there was no hiding the spark of barely contained laughter.

Balath’s muzzle swung around, pointing at first one thing then another, then yet another as she tried in vain to focus on the stick, the canine, her new friend, and K’fuzzi. I like the canine, can we get one FuzziMine? Pleasepleaseplease? She asked wriggling in sheer exuberance.
K’fuzzi looked at the kid for a moment, then at Balath, and decided to answer his dragon first. ‘I don’t think we’re allowed pets yet. Besides, you have to think about it first, you can’t just buy a canine because you like furry things.’ He tried to discourage the thought before Balath was running off to look for puppies. ‘You should probably play with, ah,’ Path ‘Path for a while and see if you really like canines before you make any decisions.’
Okay! the green dropped her muzzle to the same level as the canine’s Do you want to play with me? She asked quietly, since being noisy seemed to startle the creature.
‘You wait until your dragon gives you a stupid name.’ K’fuzzi retorted belatedly to the boy’s comment, distracting Balath from her mission. I think K’fuzzi is a nice name. She commented to the pair of them, sitting back on her hanches to eye the pair of humans. I like it, I chose it. Maybe the canine would play better if it had the stick back, Balath thought craftily and whirled to pounce on the discarded stick.
K’fuzzi sighed heavily. ‘I blame this on my mother.’ He stated. ‘If she’d named me anything other than Kainfuzzi it really would have helped.’ At least Kainfuzzi could be shortened to plain Kain, for a moment he wondered if he could just keep calling himself Kain. ‘This incident has only increased my resolved that if I have any children they are not getting ‘fuzzi’ in their names.’

Path sniffed at Balath tentatively. She was awfully big, but she hadn't tried to eat anyone yet. She watched the hatchling with the stick for a moment. Sticks were great fun, and Path didn't want to be left out. Slowly, she approached and tugged at the stick. Maybe playing with Balath would be fun after all.
Nabrik watched the pair of them for a moment with a smile. He was glad Path was getting used to dragons, albeit slowly. Much as he wanted a dragon more then anything, he didn't want to have to give up his canine for one. He looked back at K'fuzzi and resisted the urge to snort in laughter. Well, just for a second anyway, then he grinned. "I wouldn't care about the name," he declared. "Once I have one, it can call me anything it wants." Once, not if. Nabrik was overly confident about that. It was only a matter of time.
He frowned briefly at the mention of mothers. He really aught to send his a message or something. She was probably worried. He stood up a bit straighter. "Mine named me Nabrik," he said proudly. Though, in reality, his father had helped in that regard, but he refused to acknowledge that. "That's a good name, huh?" He wasn't sure what a dragon would make of it though. It seemed random so far.

Balath eyed the canine hopefully, looking several glows short of a basket with the stick hanging out of the corner of her mouth and not caring in the slightest. The young dragon wriggled all over and restrained yet another excited squeal as Path took the dangling end of the stick. Oh she liked tug of war! Balath swiftly set herself with her forelegs splayed apart so she wouldn’t be pulled off balance too easily. Apparently canines were mute, or this one was, because she made no attempt to reply to Balath’s inquiries, but as long as she wanted to play Balath was fine with it.
K’fuzzi shook his head, bewildered by the stream of half emotion half thought babble that emanated from his dragon, he was more than half afraid that it meant he’d be getting a canine as soon as Balath could find one to adopt. ‘Oh you’d care if people hid smiles every time you introduced yourself.’ K’fuzzi retorted, although he couldn’t help grinning back. Someone was a little overconfident…
K’fuzzi allowed a faint frown to cloud his features as if he was seriously considering the possibilities of Nabrik’s name, although since nothing terrible leapt out at him right away the boy was probably safe. ‘Well it’s something to identify who you’re yelling at with.’ K’fuzzi replied dryly with a crooked smile to accompany the wry comment. ‘In any case I can’t think of anything really awful to make of it offhand.’ He added, his eyes on Balath and the canine, sometimes he was still surprised to see his bonded was bright and vibrant in colour, sometimes he was even surprised to find Balath had four legs and not two.
Shaking off the thoughts he didn’t want to acknowledge K’fuzzi turned his attention back to Nabrik. ‘So, come on, what do you get up to when you’re not hanging around anywhere where a dragon might notice you?’ he asked to distract himself.
