Malara threw her bag of belongings down on a random bunk and flopped onto it sprawling out on the soft furs. She squealed with unsuppressed delight. Finally a bed to sleep in. One that wasn’t infested with crawlers and biting insects. She was finally being recognized for what she was, important. So important she was worth a dragon. Finally.
The blonde sat up and scanned the room. Not the best of accommodations but better than she was used to. “I wonder if this place has a bathing room.” She mused out loud. The barracks were almost completely empty. She stowed her stuff in the trunk at the bottom of her bed and lay back to stare at the ceiling. What the heck was she supposed to do now?

"Afraid the bathing rooms are in the main Weyr," a woman's voice said from the entrance. Wynmuri stood there in her short, round figure. She had her arms crossed and was eying the new girl critically. Short, brown hair and sharp, brown eyes finished the picture of a woman who looked like anything but a dragonrider. In truth, she didn't need to be here, but with the old Candidate Master gone, someone had to keep an eye on the fiesty young people until a new Master was found. Wyn figured she could do her part to help out, since she had few other duties to perform.
"Welcome to Selenitas," she announced with a passable smile. She held out a small, calloused hand in greeting. "I hope you're ready to work hard, 'cause being a candidate ain't no easy life." <You should not scare them away> Jarcith chided in a bored tone. <We do need them.> <I know that.> Wyn hid her scowl so as not to give the girl the wrong idea. She knew perfectly well they needed every candidate who was willing to Impress dragons and whers alike. No one wanted to risk having too few come Hatching day.

Malara sat up as a voice addressed her and ran an eye over the short round woman. “Well that’s a shame. Still I suppose if one is dirty enough they will make a journey.” She snorted irritably put out already with this woman. Who did this dumpy lady think she was? Nevertheless she took the extended hand and gave it a small shake before dropping it unceremoniously.
“I am well used to hard work thank you. I was born in Lighttower Hold. I doubt they will scare me off with work.” It was true although she was by no means extremely impressed with the place, it was tons better than what she was used to. “Who are you?” She said it in a light tone although her voice had a rude edge. Surely she was not the Candidate Master.
“I have just arrived so I am afraid I am a bit confused.” She turned away from the other woman and proceeded to scan the rest of the barracks. Dragonriders sure liked to keep things simple by the looks of it. She had a face and made a mental note to dress the place up some, or at the very least her own cot.

"Lightower, eh?" Wyn raised a curious eyebrow. "We don't get many from there," she said in a matter-of-fact tone. Her first impressions of this girl were not the best. She seemed haughty and rude and certainly a little self centered. Wyn knew the type. Make them a candidate and they thought they were the center of Pern. Probably wanted a queen too. Well, she would settle in and learn soon enough. At least the comment about work hadn't fazed her, that was something.
"Wynmuri, Dragonrider of Green Jarcith," she introduced herself with a formal tone. "We're lackin' a Candidate Master at the moment, so if yah have any questions, I can give yah a hand." She kept her voice as polite as possible, though she didn't smile. Just because she had had a bad first impression was no reason to go scaring candidates off. Even rude ones could impress a dragon.

Malara raised an eyebrow as the woman introduced herself. Green rider eh? That might explain the rudeness. Her father had always said green riders were no better than your common call girl. Then again Malara had never took much stock in the comments her father made. The caravan she had traveled with had much praise for the riders, even if her home hold despised them so. As far as the girl was concerned the jury was still out on the subject.
The new candidate flipped her hair and gave a appraising look to the newly labeled green rider. “What should I be doing while I am here? I checked the lists posted but my name isn’t on either the chore or bunk list.” If the woman wanted questions she might as well ask them. “Also if I am to impress a dragon will I be getting any hands on training with the creatures?” It only made sense for one to grow accustomed with the beasts if they were to impress one.

The girl certainly had questions, that was for sure, but they were reasonable ones too. Wyn tried her best to answer each one. "While we're out a Candidate Master, things might get confusing." she admitted. She waved at the beds. "As far as bunks, any empty one will do. Should be plenty of room since the last hatching. You'll be doing some chores eventually, probably helping in the kitchens or archives for now."
"As far as dragons go, that's up to the new Master. Or if one of the riders takes a liking to yah and asks for help." Wyn shrugged. "I expect you'll get yer share of experience 'fore long."

Malara pursed her lips, up to the new candidate master? She hoped they didn’t get some blathering idiot. She waved her hand as if dismissing the other woman. “Is that all? If it is I really should get settled.” She turned and began unpacking her things situating them neatly in the trunk before she realized the woman was still there.
The blonde turned a questioning look on her face. “Do you need something?” Did the woman not realize she was free to go? Were all weyrfolk like this? Placing a few more items, and shutting the trunk, Malara stood up. Gazing around the room and finding it just as distasteful and plain has it had appeared a few minutes before she gave a sigh. “I do not suppose you would let me met your dragon?” She asked arching her eyebrow slightly. If the candidate was worried about offending the woman she gave no indication.

Wyn crossed her arms and raised her eyebrows. Malara was Lightower for sure. Only one of their lot could be so rude and yet determined at the same time. She was certainly being presumptuous too, asking to see her dragon after practically dismissing her. Well, she would learn to respect elder riders before long.
"Maybe another time," Wyn huffed, still trying her best to be civil. "Jarcith isn't too fond of meeting new people." Wyn shrugged and turned to go. "Yah should probably take some time ta get settled anyway. Feel free to ask anyone if yah have more questions." With a wave of greeting, Wyn stalked off back towards her dragon. "Haughty brat," she muttered when she was far enough away not to be heard.
